Produced by the Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council for the Incorporated Village of Port Jefferson, friends and families from across the North East will gather to celebrate the beloved author as we once again turn our quaint seaport village into a living Dickens stage. We all look forward to the cherished traditions and new additions that will add a sparkle and a smile to this magical weekend.

Born Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-70), Dickens was arguably the literary superstar of his age, a status that lives on today. Ever the champion of the common man and the downtrodden, his inventive genius has inspired theatrical performance and a parade of films that portray the drama and redemption of life as a central theme. From “A Tale of Two Cities” to “A Christmas Carol,” Dickens managed to create some of literature’s most iconic and memorable personalities.

This year’s theme, Sweet Temptations, promises to delight the senses with dazzling decorations and delicious delectables as the Village Center is transformed into a candy land of joy! This year’s honoree is Barbara Ransome, Port Jefferson’s “Good Citizen.”

The festivities start at 7 pm and revelers are invited to dress in Dickens costumes or contemporary holiday garb, but either way, be prepared to dance the night away to the fantastic music of Soul Be It. The evening will include light refreshments, a dessert table and a cash bar, and a fabulous raffle, proceeds of which will benefit The Welcome Inn. Adults are welcome to experience this magical evening. Tickets are only $50

Master costumer Nan Guzzetta announces that appointments for Dickens costume selection and fittings began on Tuesday, Nov. 6, and will be honored through Wednesday, Nov. 27. Costumes may be picked up beginning Monday, Dec. 2. All selections and fittings are done by appointment only. For those wishing to add to their own regalia, partial costumes are available for only a $25 minimum — add a cape, a bonnet or fancy hat from Nan to make your outfit complete, or to add a dash of Dickensian flavor! Post will entertain and delight in a recital featuring “The Nutcracker” performed for four guitars. The Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival 3rd annual Gingerbread House Contest: A Holiday Tradition with a Lot of Heart Suffolk Lodge No. 60 Ancient, Free & Accepted Masons will be hosting the third annual Gingerbread House Contest during the 18th annual Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival.

Every year thousands of people attend this wonderful festival to see the transformation of Port Jefferson Village into a town out of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.“ Enter to win! All Gingerbread House Contest submissions will be on display downstairs in the historic Port Jefferson Masonic Temple throughout the entire Dickens Festival weekend.

Entries will be judged for their creativity, execution and originality by our panel of judges which includes celebrated local artists and chefs. There will be fabulous prizes awarded for adult, teen and children’s categories including a five-day

vacation for four at a luxurious resort in sunny Cancun, Mexico for the adult category first prize winner!

Suffolk Lodge No. 60 Ancient, Free & Accepted Masons has been located in its current building in Port Jefferson for over a century and has been a part of the North Shore community since 1796. Every year during the Dickens Festival Suffolk Lodge donates a portion of all proceeds from the events held within their building to some worthy charity.

Last year the Lodge supported The Harry Chapin Food Bank. This year Suffolk Lodge will be proudly supporting The Kimberly D. Holland Hodgkins Disease Foundation.

The KDH Hodgkins Disease Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation that funds clinical trials, research, and publications related to finding a cure for Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Donations to this foundation are forwarded to The Laboratory for

Experimental Therapeutics for the Lymphoproliferative Malignancies at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. These funds are being donated to support MSKCC in their ongoing research into Hodgkin’s disease.

Santa’s Workshop Pure Joy – Family Fun!

Candles flicker in the windows beckoning young and old to visit Santa’s whimsical threeroom workshop. Step back in time and reflect on the storybook charm of cherished memories of an era that has quietly faded. Anticipating “the night before Christmas,” she is busily wrapping her Christmas presents for mommy and daddy. Her room is all aglow as she looks out upon Winterscape. Oh my, how exiting... Santa and his reindeer appear through the glittering snowflakes.

On the ground the snow has fallen, blanketing a magical, revolving confection carousel created with giant sugar trees and candy canes. Beyond … tucked in a forest of alpine trees, you come upon the confection replica of the historical Game Cock Cottage embellished with sugar trees and elaborate gingerbread sugar trims.

Departing Winterscape, visitors will come upon Santa and his live elves awaiting the arrival of one and all. Be sure to bring your cameras to capture

the magic of this cherished visit ... a memorable experience to be enjoyed by the young and young at heart.

Mr. Fezziwig’s Dance Party

This year’s festival welcomes the addition of a second night of dancing in the high-spirited style of Old Mr. Fezziwig’s house parties! The good gentlemen of Suffolk Mason Lodge 60 will open the doors wide to one and all on both Friday and Saturday evenings. The lovely Victorian-era building at 312 Main Street will host the event of the season, Fezziwig’s Dance Party, featuring live music on traditional instruments: fiddle, mandolin, banjo, and the unmistakable ring of the hammered dulcimer. Come in from the cold to learn dances that were all the rage in the mid-19th century, whether you are an avid dancer or a novice hoofer. Follow the lead of master dance caller Chart Guthrie, known throughout the Northeast as an expert in calling steps for contra dancing, the waltz and the polka. As Master Guthrie says, “All you need to know is your right from your left, and you can do these dances.” You do not

need a partner – everyone is welcome to join in the fun!

The band, called Dance All Night, can be found performing at Old Bethpage Village, but these talented musicians are thrilled to be performing for you for two nights running during the Dickens Festival!

These dances are very affordably priced so that everyone — from the young to the young at heart — can join in the fun.

Tickets are $8 per person, and $15 per couple, and proceeds help benefit local charities.

his year’s house tour comes back to the downtown area just east of Main Street, where there is the largest concentration of historic homes in the Village of Port Jefferson.

Three of the homes this year have plaques on them that were issued by the Historical Society of Greater Port Jefferson indicating that they date circa 1812-1850.

All the homes on the tour were built during the 1800s. The homes early designs reflect the popular style of the times, representing Greek Revival and Federal architecture.

A special addition to the tour will be an antique toy display. The homeowner’s collection also includes Lionel and Ives trains.

There will be one running train set, antique mechanical toy banks, an 1879 Ives locomotive pull toy and a 1937 Lionel Hudson locomotive.

To enhance the tour, the newly resurrected Biddle Fountain will be included. This is a replica of the original fountain standing from 1898-1919. This majestic water feature

Dickens Festival Honoree: Barbara Ransome

e are very pleased to honor Ms. Barbara Ransome at the 18th An nual Charles Dickens Festival. Barbara has a long history of tireless dedication to volunteering and helping the community at large, with a special focus on the Village of Port Jefferson.

Barbara’s history with the Dickens Festival goes back 18 years with the event’s conception by former mayor Jeanne Garant. She created the idea of the Dickens Lanterns while a Village trustee, which were installed throughout the Village eventually and used as memorials for residents. Barbara was also a driving force behind the very popular Dickens Festival Lantern

Light House Tour over the years.

Barbara received a bachelors degree in business from C.W. Post. She graduated cum laude and is working on her MBA in marketing. She is currently the director of operations for the Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, was a former Village trustee and owns and operates the Ransome Inn bed-and-breakfast in Port Jefferson.

Her awards list is as impressive as her energy: receiving Member of the Year for Decision for Women in Commerce and the Professions in 2013; Woman of the Year in Community Service — the Port Times Record Newspaper in 2013; the 2010 BCCC Award in Leadership; honored by the League of Women Voters in 2005;

Woman of the Year in The Port Times Record in 2003… and the list goes on and on.

Barbara’s community service includes serving meals for The Welcome Inn-Interfaith Nutritional Net work, t he Suwassett Garden Club as president, for the Port Jefferson Historical Society and for the Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council.

From promoting businesses in Port Jefferson to making a difference with the underprivileged, Barbara Ransome is impressive indeed and we are proud to have her as this year’s 18th Annual Charles Dickens Festival honoree.

Dickens Festival Celebration Charles Dickens was the most influential and successful English writer of the 19th century.

Enormously successful, Charles Dickens was also known as an accomplished performer of his own work. During the last two decades of Charles Dickens’ life, he gave public readings from his works, touring Great Britain and America.

It is in this spirit that the Port Jefferson Free Library presents a radio drama of “A Christmas Carol,” featuring the Archstone Players, an acting troupe who will perform a dramatized reading.

Performed in the style of classic radio dramas (complete with sound effects) and directed by veteran actress Mary Aversano, “A Christmas Carol” is the classic story of bitter and miserly Ebenezer Scrooge’s ideological, ethical, and emotional transformation resulting from supernatural visits from Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come.

You won’t want to miss this unique holiday performance!

Dickens Characters come to life!

Several of Dickens’ well-known tales will be brought to life right here in Dickens Alley. Look for presentations of these wonderful stories during the weekend at several spots in Dickens Alley and beyond.

Horse and Carriage Rides Climb aboard an old-fashioned 12-passenger wagon, pulled by a matched pair of white horses for a true Victorian experience. Festival favorite Oreo the Dickens Horse will pull his brightly-colored fourwheeled wagonette during the Dickens Festival. Line up in front of the Island Christian Church beginning at noon on Saturday and Sunday and make sure to visit inside to celebrate its history and recent restoration.

History Revealed!

Charles Dickens repeatedly visited the United States, and his

appearances on these tours were often sold out.

Dickens was an ardent abolitionist, and crusaded tirelessly against the evils of slavery and oppression in all its forms. He hated this “peculiar institution,” and publicly denounced it during his popular tour of America prior to the Civil War. When he returned to the States after the Civil War, Dickens was overjoyed to see the improvements in the lives of the American poor, and in the abolition of slavery.

During the recent restoration, the members of the Island Christian Church uncovered fascinating secrets this ancient building held for many years. Carefully hidden rooms were uncovered, revealing the important role the church and its members played in the Underground Railroad.

The Island Christian Church also discovered historic photos of the Biddle Fountain, which had been a landmark of the Village during the time of Dickens. It had

As the images fade from Thanksgiving celebrations and the last leaves of autumn drift in the wind, Long Island prepares for the annual Village of Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival to herald in the official Christmas season. For beyond the music and mirth, the pleasure and enjoyment, the sights and sounds of the season, this is the year everyone lines up on Sunday evening to watch the Phantasmagorical Puppet Parade! In the time-honored Charles Dickens tradition of bringing communities and people together, the combined Robotics Clubs of Comsewogue and Mount Sinai High Schools, the Comsewogue Honors Art Club and the Comsewogue Drama Club have gathered to bring our fabulous Puppet Parade into the realm of the fantastic.

Sponsored by Riverhead Toyota, Setauket-Miller Place Family Dentistry – Kevin Scherer and Douglas Spring, DDS, and Empire National Bank in Port Jefferson Station, with construction assistance from Lawrence Weltsek General Contracting, the students have put together imagination with artistic inspiration, engineering with ghostly design and dramatic intent with theatrical élan. All these elements conspire to inspire the crowds that will line the streets on Sunday, Dec. 8. Bigger than life, floating above the street, each puppet will deliver an enhanced ethereal experience guaranteed to thrill and delight. New for this year will be the Artisan Square that will be an area devoted to craftspeople demonstrating 19th-century crafts. In recent years, there has been a costumed broom-maker demonstrating his craft at the festival, which has been a great success. He draws large crowds and sells out all of his wares each year.

In order to expand on that success, artisans who demonstrate blacksmithing, carpentry, weaving, paint mixing (using historically accurate pigments and components and masonry will join together to make up the Artisan Square. These craftspeople utilize 19th-century tools, and educate festival attendees in understanding the process of their respective crafts.

In addition to relating the 19th-century techniques, they engage festival attendees in conversations that encourage them to compare old tools to modern tools, methods and products that are used in everyday life.

The Dickens Holiday Dance will be the very brightest highlight of Friday evening’s revelry, with dining and dancing a-plenty.

This year, we proudly honor and celebrate Port Jefferson’s own Barbara Ransome.

Rediscover one of the favorite activities of the 19th century: the Ice Skating rink at the Village Center will be open from 10 am to 10 pm on Saturday, and from 10 am to 6 pm on Sunday. Skates will be available for rent, or you can bring your own pair.

The festivities will include many returning favorites: stirring performances by choirs and harmony groups, and many other fine musical performances by area musicians and children’s groups.

Local restaurants will continue the tradition of offering Victorian-themed dinners throughout the weekend, and festivalgoers will be able to dine in grand fashion, or on hearty fare as they choose. Christ Church Episcopal on Barnum Avenue will open

its doors to all for the annual St. Nicholas Inn of assorted soups and breads served in humble Dickens style, and with the added fun of their annual Chocolate Extravaganza!

The Port Jefferson Free Library invites one and all to visit its YA Center across the street on Saturday from 9:30 am to 5 pm and on Sunday from 1 to 5 pm.

Housed in the historic 128-year-old Athena Hall, Theatre Three will be presenting a delightful pairing of holiday productions.

This year’s Festival marks Theatre Three’s 30th annual production of “A Christmas Carol.” A delightful diversion, this classic ghost story of the season has become a cherished tradition for many.

Theatre Three will also be presenting a special show of “Barnaby Saves Christmas” on Saturday morning. After the evening shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you can have your photo taken with Scrooge. As a special memento, the little ones can have their picture taken with Santa after Saturday morning’s presentation of “Barnaby Saves Christmas.” A $5 donation for each photo is requested, be it with Scrooge or Santa, which will go the Theatre Three Scholarship Fund.

“A Christmas Carol” Radio Show recalls a simpler time, when families gathered around the radio, and were swept up by the narratives, vividly enlivened by their own imaginations. This timeless story is brought to life by costumed actors who perform before the eyes of the audience.

High-spirits and hijinks abound with the madcap troupe Renegade Improv, who bring their interactive merriment back to the Village Center with their trademark Christmasthemed fun.
