Rabbi’s Corner

Shalom l'kulam! Thank you very much for all

the hospitality you showed Rabbi Eisenstat during my March visit. It was a great simcha to celebrate Purim with all of you! As we look towards April, it is with a bittersweet tone that I tell you all my time in Petoskey is coming to a close. I am very sad to be leaving this incredible congregation after two wonderful years as your student rabbi. It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve, learn from, and be mentored by you all. Thank you for making me feel so at home both in Petoskey and at Temple B'nai Israel. Thank you for bringing me into and making me part of your lives and your community. And thank you for giving me the opportunity to grow as a rabbi and a Jew. I feel truly blessed to have had the opportunity of serving here. I wish you all lives filled with peace, happiness, good health, and success.

“Once more the Heavenly Power Makes all things new And domes the red-plow’d hills With loving blue; The blackbirds have their wills, The throstles too.

Till at thy chuckled note, Thou twinkling bird, The fairy fancies range, And, lightly stir’d, Ring little bells of change From word to word.”

Temple B'nai Israel will host its annual Community Passover Seder on April 23rd. This year, the Sunday School will be organizing and helping to lead the Seder alongside Rabbi Aaron. We have selected a very accessible yet thorough Haggadah. The students have been studying hard, and the congregation’s participation is greatly appreciated. The Seder, free of charge, will be a potluck this year. Please bring your favorite Passover dish and a copy of the recipe. Because we will be enjoying a brisket (of great acclaim) we ask everyone to abstain from bringing any dairy dishes to the Seder. We will compile the recipes and provide everyone with a Passover Seder cookbook, as well as a copy of the Haggadah. More information is forthcoming.

Holocaust Cellist Concert

Purim Celebration The Purim Carnival was a great success. Thank you to all who attended, and special thanks go out to Adele, Norman, Abigail, and Milo for their amazing Purim Spiel and Carnival. Congratulations to Emily Stuchell for her convincing (and delicious) victory in the Hamantashen bake off and to Natalie Overton for her Best Costume award.

On Friday, May 20, join us at the Crooked Tree Arts Center to celebrate the musical genius of Richard Stöhr, an 20th-century cellist who was exiled from Austria when the Nazis invaded and whose work has gone largely unpublished and unrecognized. Cellist Stefan Koch and pianist Robert Conway will perform a variety of Stöhr’s pieces at 8 p.m. on the 20th. Adult tickets cost $10; students’ cost $5. Children under twelve are free. This event is part of a block-booking activity offered by the L'Dor v'Dor Consortium and is made possible by a grant from the Jewish Women's Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit.

Adar II / Nissan 5776 Siddur Challenge Grant A donor has issued a challenge grant aimed at replacing the temple’s outdated High Holy Day Siddurs, The Gates of Repentance, which are nearly forty years old and which will hopefully be replaced with the new Mishkan Ha’Nafesh. The donor will match all donations to this initiative up to one thousand dollars. If you would like to help the temple meet the donor’s challenge, please forward a donation to the Prayer Book Fund. Siddurs, which cost $50 each, will each have a nameplate attached, honoring its sponsor. Donations can be mailed to the treasurer at 3942 Lorraine Drive, Petoskey MI 49770.

In conjunction with a grant from the Michigan Humanities Council to the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan, each congregation is being asked to submit at least one name and life story of a past outstanding woman leader who made a difference in the congregation's history.
