It is hard to believe almost a year has passed since my family and I first arrived here in Chappaqua – and what a year it has been! I cannot adequately express my sense of gratitude and appreciation for everything this community has done to welcome me and my family. Similarly, I am in debt to my colleagues within the clergy and staff of Temple Beth El for their support and camaraderie over the past year. Beyond the many celebrations, programs and observances upon which we have collaborated, I am most proud of the relationships built and the tangible sense of optimism and excitement that permeates the building. Perhaps it’s just the “new car smell” of a first year in a new position, but I am not ready to let go of the momentum we have built together. One year ago, I was packing up our apartment and preparing to travel to Israel for my final trip with my former congregation. Fast forward a year later and I have endured my first east coast winter, the steep learning curve of a new environment, and the many missteps and hiccups that accompany such a transition. I appreciate your receiving me, foibles and all, with such warmth and care. This is an exciting time for us at Temple Beth El. After several years of transition, we believe that we are hitting our stride. The buzz within the building begins at 9:00 am each morning, when the throngs of young children ascend the stairs toward our Beginning Years Nursery School. Our school is nearly fully enrolled and overseen by a talented and dedicated group of early childhood educators and administrators, led aptly by Rayna Alperstein. The midday hours are full of classes, discussions, and steady preparations for the week’s events. In the early afternoon, the buses arrive and the Religious School students pour into the great hall. Their beautiful art works, overseen by Rabbi Linzer, bring color and life to the walls of the synagogue. The fifteen minutes of opening tefilah stands as a highlight of my day, full of knees-knees-clapping and singing. As the students go to class, the b’nei mitzvah students begin to arrive, one-by-one on the half hour, like clockwork for their meetings with me, Cantor Trompeter, and Rabbi Linzer. As the day comes to an end, the Religious School parents congregate in the hall, catching up on their busy schedules and greeting their children who – what is this? – exit their classes smiling. The evening brings a mixture of pizza eating and socializing teen and confirmation students, committee participants and communal volunteers. All in a good day’s work. Of course, none of these activities, nor the celebrations and memories established at Beth El, can occur without the behind-the-scenes efforts of our staff. I want to take this opportunity to thank those whom we really can never thank enough. Firstly, our maintenance team is the first to leave and the last to go. Our increased programming and enrollment translates into more setups and transitions than ever. The open and bright environment of our synagogue begins with them. Next, I want to thank our administrative team of Jaclyn Dubray, Leslie Aufieri, and Ann Testone. They are the glue that keeps everything together, and their wit and organization (and humor!) brighten everything we do. Next, Gennifer Kelly provides an octopus-like reach into at least eight things at a time. Point to something going on within the synagogue and odds are that Genn is at least partly responsible for it. Finally, I need to thank the many volunteers, board members, and lay leaders who make time from their busy schedules to devote themselves to our community. Their selflessness and tirelessness are the fuel that makes our congregation go. I am thrilled to be a part of the ride.

RABBI’S MESSAGE In the coming year, we look forward to building upon our current momentum. We will introduce a few creative wrinkles to this year’s high holiday programming. Next Fall, we will embark upon our completely revamped Genesis post B’nei Mitzvah program which is already drawing an enthusiastic response from our students. So too, will we introduce a newly structured mitzvah corps program for our 7th graders, which will add social and curricular aspect to their B’nei Mitzvah volunteer projects. Cantor Trompeter will continue to innovate musically and Rabbi Linzer refine what has become a rigorous and stimulating curriculum. Later this summer, we will outline a complete menu of adult educational opportunities. And this Winter will feature our congregational trip to Cuba. In all, there is much to look forward to! As always, none of this would be possible without your commitment and engagement with our congregation. Should you have any thoughts regarding how we can improve upon our current efforts, please do not hesitate to contact any of us. With summer break upon us, we will be diligently working over the next few months in order to put our best foot forward this Fall. This first year has been an amazing ride. I can’t wait to see what another year holds in store for us. L’Shalom,

Rabbi Jonathan Jaffe

CANTOR STAR A. TROMPETER An Astronaut, a Singer, a Bat Mitzvah… An astronaut and a parttime singer. When I was seven years old, that’s what I wanted to be -- an astronaut and a part-time singer. It was the mid-1980s and the powerful Women’s Lib movement had been around since the early 1960s. The strong women in my family encouraged me to become whatever I wanted to be as I grew up. As I got older, I realized that I might not be astronaut material since the design, development, analysis, and testing of rockets and spacecraft did not come easily to me. Singing, however, was a talent that practically took over my life before I was ten years old, and has shaped my life and truly given me voice, ever since.

means to that end. It can redress an imbalance, create a profound healing, and permit many women to embrace the totality of our Jewish selves. I believe that becoming a Bat Mitzvah as an adult is certainly a path to empowerment for women, their families, and their congregations. As more and more adult women explore this road not always taken, synagogues, traditions, and lifetime rituals will benefit from their wisdom, knowledge, and experience. Again, I celebrate, support, and encourage these TBE women to continue along this Jewish path that they have begun. Who knows where in this great big world it will take them? It may even take them to outer space. Cantor Star Trompeter

But it wasn’t until eleven years ago this spring that my voice led me to a serious and profound relationship with Judaism. Eleven years ago, I became an Adult Bat Mitzvah. On May 9 at TBE, we observed and rejoiced and came together for an Adult B’not Mitzvah service. We came together to support and celebrate four adult women who had solemnly studied and took to heart the responsibility of becoming a Bat Mitzvah. They reminded me of me. When I became a Bat Mitzvah eleven years ago in San Francisco, I was among a group of nine women. We were young and not so young; we were old and not so old; we were students, accountants, librarians, scientists, baristas, and paralegals. But we had one common thread – we were women who had a deep wish to become a Bat Mitzvah. We wanted the fulfillment of a long-held desire that for many different reasons was not an option at age twelve or thirteen. The B’not Mitzvah service itself was breathtaking, although I barely remember taking a breath. I was exhilarated to be chanting Torah with my “sisters,” some of whom never believed they would ever get the opportunity. But they did. We all did. The Adult B’not Mitzvah service continues to become more prevalent among temples across the country, and women continue to reclaim the right to participate as full adult members of the Jewish community. Becoming a Bat Mitzvah is a powerful

All this is reflected during a span bounded by the outbreak of World War II in Europe followed by Pearl Harbor, V-Day, the growth of suburbia, Silicon Valley, and the numerous sociological changes in America. And It Went So Fast is also loaded with well-tested nuggets of business advice, including the evergreen value of goal-setting.

MAURA H. LINZER, RABBI-EDUCATOR/RELIGIOUS SCHOOL A Year in Review With the help of our committed lay leadership and professional staff, Temple Beth El’s Religious School had an outstanding year. Only two years ago, we had a combined K/1 class and this year we had our first full class of first graders with eighteen students enrolled. We have been so excited to see the growth of our program from the bottom up. Additionally, our madrichim, teacher training, program grew from four students last year to twelve students this year and made a huge impact in our lower grades, allowing for further differentiation of our Hebrew curriculum. The sixth grade curriculum underwent major revisions, adding experiential components, such as a trip to a Mikveh, a meeting with a convert, a model Bris with Mohel Barry Meisel, a meeting about confirmation with Rabbi Jaffe and a mock grade level wide wedding ceremony with Rabbi Linzer. We also had a number of new programs this year. Our K-4th graders had a cooking program on Sunday mornings led by one of our teen madrichim and a cooking instructor, which allowed students the opportunity to bake challah, hamantaschen, and matzah. We also had an Artist-in-Residence, Sarah Glickman, who helped our K-4th grade students create beautiful murals and our 5th-6th graders sculptures, reflecting on all that they had learned. The students’ artwork is on display in the Great Hall. Our Religious School also hosted the Galim dancers a teen dance troop from Israel who spent time with our 5th graders, who spend their year at Religious School studying about Israel, and performed for our families as a part of our congregational celebration for Yom HaAtzmaut, Israeli Independence day. Additionally, our 4th graders went on a tour of the Lower East Side to complement their studies of Jewish immigration, our 5th and 6th grade students enjoyed Krav Maga instruction, Israeli Self-Defense, our 6th graders and their families enjoyed volunteering at project sites around the community as

6

a part of their 6th grade Shabbaton, and our 7th graders worked with youth at Neighbors Link in Mt. Kisco, as a part of their unit on Gemillut Hasadim, acts of loving-kindness. It was a wonderful year of growth and exploration for our students, and we are looking ahead with much anticipation to an exciting year next year. As a part of a grant from the Jewish Education Project, we could not be more excited about the launch of our Genesis Teen Program, which will feature clergy teaching in every grade level, travel trips across the country, and engaging and exciting electives. For more information, please visit: https://bethelnw.org/Genesis. Don’t miss out on what we know will be an exciting and rewarding new opportunity for our teens!

RAYNA ALPERSTEIN, DIRECTOR BEGINNING YEARS ECC All teachers develop beliefs about the way children develop and learn. The really thoughtful and reflective ones base their beliefs on child development knowledge not simply on instinct, parenting or intuition. At Beginning Years we believe that our classrooms should be built on freedom of expression and responsibility. We want children to voice their opinions as long as it’s done respectfully; even disagreeing with the adults. In addition, our classrooms are caring communities steeped in a sense of adventure, discovery and risk-taking, and Jewish values. The bases are the child development theories of Jean Piaget, John Dewey, and Lev Vygotsky. Piaget started it – he posited that children are not little vessels into which adults pour knowledge. John Dewey further elaborated that children are active seekers of information and constructors of knowledge. This goes beyond the simple passing of academic skills learned in isolation to a great program that builds on children’s interests and strengths. We need children to learn to be risk-takers and critical, creative thinkers who can problem solve. Lev Vygotsky discovered that children can accomplish much more than what was originally thought when schooling began. He taught us that by scaffolding children’s learning, they will stretch themselves to learn that which is purpose driven. Beyond what one might think a child of a given age can learn.

It takes a lot of planning and effort to teach children how to work together, work independently, and to live as part of a democratic community. The way a room is set up speaks to how a child uses the space. Is there joint decision making, choice, and accountability? Are there many different problem-solving situations? How much control do the children have and how much responsibility for the space do they have? Is there a sense of spirituality, honoring one another? While some teachers and parents believe the job of education is to teach discrete facts and skills, we believe that this is not the whole picture. I have no idea what children today will be required to know tomorrow. What I do know is that children need to know how to access information and how to choose strategies to allow them to solve problems. And for the sake of the world, we need to teach children about accepting differences and working with many different kinds of people. We need to make Tikkun Olam part of every home and school if this global community is to survive. Have a wonderful summer filled with adventure and joy.

Did you know that Temple Beth El owns land at Sharon Gardens in Kensico Cemetery? The best time to buy a plot is when it isn’t even a thought. Maybe give it a thought now when hopefully a plot isn’t needed for 100 years. TBE hasn’t raised the purchase price of a plot in over a decade, however as of July 1, 2015 the price is increasing. Currently a double plot is $2,200 and a quad plot is $4,400. For all inquiries and purchases after July 1, double plots will be $4,000 and a quad plot is $8,000. Still the best bargain in real estate in Westchester! If you would like more information, contact Jaclyn Trustman-Dubray at 914-238-3928 x1310 or jtrustman@bethelnw.org.

WE ARE AN INCLUSIVE CONGREGATION Temple Beth El of Northern Westchester welcomes all who wish to participate in Jewish life – singles, couples and families in all their forms, gays, lesbians, interfaith couples – all people regardless of age, sexual orientation, or financial means. The synagogue is a kehilah kedoshah – a sacred community. It’s like a sukkah. A sukkah is constructed of many different branches woven together. So is the synagogue: the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the married and the unmarried, single parents, grandparents, gays and heterosexuals, non-Jewish spouses. The broader the sukkah’s reach, the more tightly its branches are woven, the stronger it stands. So too the synagogue: the greater the variety of people welcomed within it, the closer they feel to one another, the stronger the temple stands.
