We are proud to present the fourth edition of Aspirational Living; our lifestyle magazine that aims to highlight some of what is so special, often unique and hopefully enjoyable about living or spending time here in Cornwall.

In this issue we share with you some of our favourite pop up foodie destinations, in ‘dining with a difference’. We feel certain that you will love tracking down and discovering for yourselves the amazing culinary delights and locations they each have to offer. We also meet the brothers behind one of our best-loved destinations, The Gurnards Head, near Zennor and give you the opportunity to find out more about this award-winning establishment.

New for this issue, we speak to the owners of the highly acclaimed (and one of our favourites) Tregony Gallery on the Roseland Peninsula, who tell us about relocating to Cornwall to follow their dream, as well as the Cornish art scene; an introduction to what we hope will become a regular feature. Rohrs & Rowe After just over two years in business, it is hard to believe that we now find ourselves publishing the 4th edition of Aspirational Living, and we are delighted to say that both the magazine and our business continue to go from strength to strength.

Since the release of the winter edition of the magazine, at the very end of last year, we have agreed the sales of, or sold, circa £26 million pounds of property! Quite extraordinary if you are to believe all that you read and hear in the press. It’s fair to say we have seen little ill effect in our beautiful and unique corner of the world, as the demand for high quality property in the middle to upper end of the market remains strong, with many extremely motivated buyers still looking for the right property.

Areas that have seen particular success this year are Padstow and the Seven Bays, where we have experienced a 100% sales rate so far. Dining with a difference Cornwall is as famous for its food as it is for its coastline. Whilst many celebrity chefs now call this home, or at very least have opened a restaurant here, we have a huge amount of local talent and copious

amount of choice when it comes to eating out.

In this edition of Aspirational Living we wanted to take a look at some of the more unusual places you can have something to eat and drink around the county and handpicked a few our favourites. So why not have some fun discovering some of the unsung heroes of the Cornwall foodie scene, enjoy!

Kern of Kernow:

A set of cake loving twins and a van called Beyoncé.

Kern is both short for ‘Kernow’ the Cornish name for Cornwall and

a German word meaning nucleus, the centre of something, the core.

The twins behind Kern were born in Germany and although haven’t

lived there since they were 10, they still love the country and doff

their caps to pretty much everything the clever Germans come up with, especially their sweet treats.

The twins wanted their German roots to be represented in their

foodie venture, and so not only is the name a nod to this but the

treats on offer are German bakery inspired, the delicious German

bundt cake. “We believe in good home made cake, good coffee and great tea. The fact we can fuse our love of Cornwall, cake and

coffee inside a 70s van makes us very happy and we hope we can brighten your day and taste buds too.” said Kris.

Whether you’ve cycled your bike along the Camel Trail, you’re

Off Road Coffee - Smooth Coffee for any terrain!

Off Road Coffee is a catering business run from a beautifully

restored Landrover, their passionate and skilled baristas make

smooth coffee for any terrain. Owners, Alex and Bethany Wade established Off Road Coffee through ambition, dedication and a

clear vision; they don’t claim to be reinventing the wheel, but do

believe that their attention to detail and eye for perfection makes

their coffee business stand out from the rest.

Off Road Coffee has now been running for just under a year. In that

time, they have occupied a pitch at the very picturesque spot, Grogley Halt, which is half way between Bodmin and Wadebridge on

The Thirstea Company

Started back in 2013 by two Guildford School of Acting trained theatre

technicians, who were feeling disenchanted with their chosen career

paths; they decided to give it all up, move to Cornwall and open a café.

Within a few short months of making that decision, they had a name, a kitchen, and most importantly the star of the show, their van, Earl.

Having fallen in love with the inimitable Citroen H Van, a rollercoaster

journey followed and they served their first cup of tea in early May

2014 and have been going strong ever since. Pitched at the National

Trust's Porth Farm on the Roseland Peninsula, the van is perfectly

sited on the circular walk around St Anthony's Head, and also just a few yards up the path from the beautiful Towan Beach. With plenty of

W

e talk to Elaine Skinner, design director and founder of luxury interior design practice, Camellia Interiors about what makes them different, what it takes to stand out in the Cornwall luxury holiday let market and how to achieve maximum return on investment on your holiday property.

Why would a client select you to help with their second home?

Firstly, the return on investment they know I can achieve for their revenue and secondly the relationship they can build with me. Mostly when clients come to us, one half of the couple is looking after the expenditure and the other the design, these two elements can often conflict and I understand how to merge them so everyone is happy.

My focus is always on the client’s investment costs and what can be done to a property to maximise revenue; but I’m not frightened to say to a client where they absolutely cannot cut corners.

Secondly the relationship, I personally do all the design and work direct with my clients until design is signed off, there isn’t a team of graduates working with you offering you just one look, usually a ‘Scandi sheepskin throw and bamboo furniture roll out’; each project in the designers repertoire looking the same. I would always advise a client to look at a designers case studies, you want to see a variety of work and styles as opposed to an Instagram looking feed of the same thing over and over. You are not getting a personalised design for you with this style of interior design, you are getting a branded design that is

rolled out for each and every client. You can’t expect to stand out from the crowd and command the best return if you look the same as everyone else.

What sort of work do you do?

For private clients we often start with just giving a holiday home the finishing touches they need to get the home ready for rental, or we might do a compete package of flooring, curtains, blinds and furniture; all depending on budgets and requirements. We’ll often be asked to then accessorise the house ready for it to be let with a holiday letting company whilst the owner retains a number of weeks a year. Lastly we work with clients to create their own dream second home that is purely for their personal use.

We also work very closely with architects, property developers and holiday let companies staging show homes and styling properties to add value, salability and desirability; sometimes a whole house, sometimes just a few key rooms. I totally understand what it takes to stand out in this crowded market and pride myself on achieving maximum return on investment for all our clients, whatever their goals. On average our methodology increases holiday home revenue by at least 25%, which is pretty impressive considering how saturated Cornwall is with options.

What advice would you give someone trying to enter the luxury holiday let market, or someone who wanted to up their game?

If you want to enter into the luxury holiday let industry and command the best price for your property, then you need to speak to a designer that understands this field. Luxury holiday letting is competitive; you want to make sure your interiors not only look great but that the space works well for the job intended. Interiors should be hard-wearing and not date when the latest trends change. Sometimes investing slightly more in the beginning can make a huge difference to your return on investment long term and a good designer will be able to explain this to you and advise accordingly.

We don’t tend to follow trends, our designs are timeless and classic, to make sure they last; not just the heavy footfall and everyday wear and tear but outlive any trends that may come and go. We totally understand just what it takes to set the tone for today’s discerning customers and deliver ultimate return on investment for our clients, it’s why they keep coming back.

So what makes the area so popular? There is easy access to

Newquay Airport from this part of the county, which is a very big

draw, especially with the new daily Heathrow flights being added

and the better links via the improved A30 now giving easier and

faster road access, but of course, it goes deeper than that.

abuzz with many other well regarded and up and coming

restaurants and eateries, meaning the availability and general

standard across the board is very high indeed.

But it is the superb coastal lifestyle on offer here that really tips

the scales in the Camel Estuary’s favour. There are so many

activities for both kids and adults alike to get stuck into, from surfing or just spending leisurely days on any one of the many glorious beaches. Sailing, boating and waterskiing can be enjoyed

on the estuary itself, as well as SUP, kite surfing and coasteering.

The beaches on both sides are among the best in the country,

with the renowned Seven Bays stretching from Trevone to

Padstow and the wider Camel Estuary area has become the foodie

Porthcothan on the Padstow side, Tregirls and Daymer on opposite

Ainsworth and Nathan Outlaw each having multiple restaurants

to the north. Each is as beautiful as the last but offer something

Tasting for The Gurnards’ wine list is a collective effort. The Imbibe Wine Awards made The Gurnard’s Head Wine Pub of the Year in 2011/2012

and in 2014 EATDRINKSLEEP was one of four inaugural entries to their Hall of Fame. Twice shortlisted for the IWC’s Restaurant Wine List

award, it bears comparison with any in the country. As many as 20 wines

are served by the glass and by the carafe, with another 50 sourced from

up to 8 different wine merchants who specialise in different regions.

Its real interest is in its use of lesser known grape varieties and regions

We speak to Gallery Directors Brian and Judi Green from Tregony Gallery about living and working on The Roseland Peninsula.

Tell us a little bit about your lives/what you were doing/where you were living prior to taking over the gallery?

Brian and I have both been involved in the arts since graduating in Graphic Design. We met in the late 70’s while working as art

directors for advertising agency J. Walter Thompson. Brian

proposed to me after a Siouxsie and the Banshees concert at the

‘Roundhouse’ in Camden in 1978. We lived and worked in North London, taught design and advertising at Kingston School of Art

and in 1984 established an international, award wining design

consultancy called ‘The Green House’. I never stopped painting and throughout my design career attended life painting and

drawing classes at the Slade School of Fine Art. Following a joint

decision in 1999 Brian went freelance as a design and art director

which gave him the flexibility to work from any location. I was awarded in 2001 a place on the first M.A.Drawing Year at the now,

well established Royal Drawing School in Shoreditch, London.

Around 2005, following a successful start to my painting career,

I made the bold decision to paint full time and rented a studio in

Highgate and Wood Green before the move to Cornwall, exhibiting at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, selected for the

Threadneedle Prize, Lynn Painter Stainers Prize, Royal West

Academy, Medici Gallery, Cork Street and thrilled to have been

selected for the Biennial Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Prize Exhibition 2019.

We have two talented daughters Jessika (archivist for a

What made you decide to move to Cornwall and in particular choose Tregony, above more obvious locations like St Ives?

We had always talked about moving out of London, many close

friends had made the move and we were excited at the prospect.

The desire to move out of London was very strong. Owning a

gallery was not in our plans at the time as we were more focused

on finding the right property, a detached cottage with a garden within a village so we would not be too isolated. Initially we

thought we would be looking at a second home perhaps in Devon

and after several years of searching, weekends away staying with friends or local hotels and B&B‘s by 2005 we landed in Tregony, a

traditional, unspoilt, working village with a strong heart. Close to

Truro and major transport links in one of the most beautiful areas

in Cornwall ‘The Roseland Peninsula’ an area of outstanding

natural beauty the perfect location for me to build a studio and

concentrate on developing my work and Brian to continue to

freelance and have some chickens.

How have you found the change/work life balance, compared to where you lived and worked before?

We are just as busy as ever. It’s less polluted and stressful, more fresh air, long walks, big skies, and a feeling of being much more

What lessons have you learnt and any advice you’d give to someone thinking about making the same type of move?

Don’t rush it, take your time to get to know an area, do your

research. Come and visit, stay and rent a property first. I think we

spent about five years preparing for this life-changing move. Its

taken ten years for us to be accepted as part of the community,

but to be honest we will always be outsiders because we have

come from a big city and don’t have family here in Cornwall.

However, Brian has recently found out that his paternal

grandmother was born in St Austell so that might make him

almost Cornish.

Having major building work done on a property and you not able to

be around can be a big challenge, it is better if you can be on site

or employ a project manager. Builders make decisions, if you’re not available they may not be to your taste. Spend time in your local pub, everything you need to know you can find out there.

What makes Tregony gallery different/stand out from the crowd?

Brian and I have been working in the creative industries for over

studio visits and catching up with friends and family. We

embraced the opportunity and started a major rebranding and

repositioning of the gallery’s identity and direction by building

relationships with artists and collectors, culminating in an artist

run gallery focusing on distinctive figurative painting. Curating over eighteen exhibitions over the past four years we are providing new opportunities for artists and a unique contemporary focus for art

in Cornwall. As experienced visual practitioners we understand

every aspect of the process and are able to provide judicious

support and unlimited encouragement for all our artists.

What challenges have you found, both to moving to a new area and opening a gallery?

Moving to a new area is tough, you do not have the support

network of close friends and family anymore, therefore it is

important to make an effort to support your local community from

the village pub to, in our case the annual ‘Tregony Heavy Horse Fair’ to the ‘Clockhouse Players’ and Christmas lights. Having

visited the area many times in the early years we already had made

some good friendships, which helped. We made the final.

the globe from London to Cuba. Tregony Gallery is a member of 'Own

Art' where artworks can be purchased in interest-free installments, over 10 months making purchases more affordable.

What have you been most proud so far/your greatest achievement(s), since taking the gallery on?

In addition to supporting established artists we nurture young and

emerging artists within art schools and colleges, awarding our annual Tregony Gallery Art Prize, creating the opportunity to exhibit

alongside some of the gallery artists from around Britain and as far

afield as America.

Presenting our first exhibition for 2019, ‘Assemble’ in central

London. Assemble introduced our impressive contemporary artists

to a new audience and we were able to share our vision and

on a very positive note we have become much more established

within the village as we welcome locals who have never stepped foot in the gallery ever before and the school children and art

teachers from the Roseland Academy come and visit for workshops.

Owning our own gallery is living the dream even though it is hard

work, it has taken us all over the country meeting new artists from

Cornwall and further afield. Brian and I never moved to Cornwall to

retire and it has given us a new outlet for our creativity and passion for collecting and exhibiting art.

Tell us about the kind of art and artists you showcase at the gallery/gallery ethos?

Continuing our dedication to art and a continual pursuit for

excellence, Brian and I have honed our ability to spot artists that

have something different in the way they see and interpret the world.

Our artists are genuinely engaged with individual research, they all

take risks to satisfy their restless curiosities. The gallery’s artists

are divergent but share a common sensibility to their work: a natural

sensitivity that enables the viewer’s direct engagement with their

subject and intangible influences that led to the creation of each work. Now, Tregony Gallery boast an impressive roster of

distinguished Cornish and International artists and is the perfect

venue to enjoy a balance of original work by modern British and

contemporary artists. The gallery runs a distinctive program of

exhibitions and has formed new relationships with visitors,

collectors and the creative media.

Were there any location or design constraints you had to overcome on this project and how did you do so?

The clients wanted to create a very private atmosphere; but they

also wanted to have views and light with in the pool and spa; we

feel we have achieved this and more and at night this area has a

tranquil feel about it, somewhere you want to go a unwind.

What advice would you give a client thinking of incorporating a pool or water feature into the design of their home?

Indoor or outdoor pool is one of the first considerations; this will

likely determine how much you are likely to use a pool, in the UK
