SPRING/SUMMER COLLECTION 2023
STYLISH LIVING ACROSS SCOTLAND
SCOTLAND

A WARM WELCOME

To Prestige Scotland, a property lifestyle magazine celebrating luxury living.

Within each edition, we will shine the spotlight on all things stylish in Scotland, bringing you the very best in property, culture, motoring and much more.

2023 – The year ahead

West of Scotland – A prime market

Supply and demand, it’s a driving force in any market. It’s certainly a major factor in the residential property market. Across the West of Scotland, we are seeing a real demand for property, including the prime market, in all areas reaching from Ayrshire to Argyll & Bute. The last quarter of 2022 raised several issues for everyone involved in property, namely a sharp increase in mortgage rates, but as the dust settled and rates begin to reduce to more palatable levels, buyers have come back to the market while sellers have taken a little more time. Demand is high but supply is yet to catch up in 2023.

At Rettie & Co., we take great pride in achieving the best result possible for our clients, whilst also helping our buyers get over the line and secure their dream home. After all, much of our business comes from those who purchase through us. It is a testament to how we operate, that those who buy from our clients, become clients of Rettie & Co. themselves. A large part of our business is using our network of buyers and the need to stay creative in our approach has never been more evident. We are always happy to assist in matching clients on both sides to achieve the right result.

The West of Scotland prime market is alive and well and while supply is lower than last year, this has meant that the market has been fast paced and we are seeing some incredible sales prices above and beyond home report value. As always, our strategy and approach to marketing has ensured that anything coming to market has been well received and popular with numerous buyers, leading to closing dates and in some instances, record premiums.

Built to Last

A GUARANTEE OF DURABILITY

Luxury watchmaking comprises some of the world’s most complex engineering techniques. Hundreds, sometimes thousands, of tiny parts are placed together to run without battery for a lifetime of wear. The industry gold standard for this composition and servicing is Rolex. Assembling the finest timepieces for over a century, there is no doubt that Rolex knows how to make a watch that is built to last.

From the conception of a Rolex watch to the time it leaves the workshops, every step of the development and manufacture follows a single critical requirement: quality. As a result, there is no limit on how long a Rolex watch can keep working, meaning they can be handed down from one generation to the next, living several lives of storied emotion. To ensure these lifetimes of horological accuracy it is advised that you regularly check-in your timepiece for servicing.

A Journey Through Time with Laings Pre-Owned Manager, JAMES CRAWFORD

There’s a certain way someone’s face lights up when they are talking about a particular passion. Whether it’s a review of the latest film release or an appreciation of vintage cars, true admiration translates through a sparkle in the eye.

46 | PRESTIGE SCOTLAND LAINGS | PRE-OWNED | LAINGSUK.COM

The variety is something that really appeals to our clients and especially those watch enthusiasts who are looking for something that not everybody else has. Our commitment to excellence means that each watch goes through a strict examination, ensuring quality while inviting clients to enjoy a piece of watchmaking history. Laings sees our Pre-Owned Collection as an opportunity, a chance to own a watch which has a rich heritage, a treasure to be cherished once again.

It’s the same look that prestigious jewellers, Laings Pre-Owned Manager, James Crawford has when discussing luxury watches. Nestled in Laings showroom, sat behind a table displaying perhaps the most coveted timepieces, James’ adoration of the pre-owned watch scene is palpable as he discusses his journey to become a custodian of the rare, the desirable and the extraordinary.

Demonstrating the intricate details of a limited-edition OMEGA Speedmaster, the expert’s infectious spirit comes from years of training and a love of watches. James’ interest in luxury retail was kindled over a decade ago while wandering through Glasgow’s Argyll Arcade in search of a gift to mark his 18th birthday. He was hooked on the energy of the sales assistant. A gateway to such knowledge and prestige created a spark that grew into a horological passion.

Tell us about your journey through the luxury watch environment?

“After that first interaction, I kept looking for ways I could learn more. Whether it was keeping up with the latest models or reading online blogs, I found real joy in uncovering the in-depth world of watchmaking. A sales assistant role became available at Laings Edinburgh and I jumped at the chance to work with the likes of Rolex, OMEGA, and Cartier while honing my skills in customer service. From there, I became the brand manager for Rolex at Laings. It felt like such an achievement to go from a keen fan to representing one of the world’s finest horology brands.

What led you to your current position as Pre-Owned Manager?

At Laings, we work with some of the world’s most prestigious brands. I think the buzz that comes with watchmaking is clear, there’s a real hype within the community and the chance to own rarer, more limited-edition pieces drives the pre-owned market. The Laings Pre-Owned Collection was always something the business had and I really wanted to take it to the next level. The watch industry has seen such significant growth over the past few years, especially in the pre-owned sector and now is the right time for us to become a destination for these models, creating something we can be known for, as well as proud of.

Tell us more about your role as Pre-Owned Manager?

My role is multi-faceted, which is what I enjoy about it the most. I’m responsible for growing and developing our collection whilst liaising with key stakeholders. Everything from the procurement and selling of luxury timepieces, to consulting with our e-commerce and marketing teams. It’s a role that involves a level of clienteling, which is something I’ve loved ever since I started in the industry. At Laings, we have some fantastic clients and I’m fortunate enough to continue these relationships, from my days in the showroom to my position now.

What is your vision for the future of Pre-Owned at Laings?

Going forward I’m looking to grow our collection by hosting a selection to suit the needs of every watch-lover. I’m excited about the variety of timepieces we’re looking to acquire, showcasing our pre-owned watches in the most beautiful environments with teams that deliver the same passion that I was so taken by in my younger years. We have recently started an Instagram page dedicated to showcasing the latest entrants to our collection @LaingsPreOwnedWatches.

It will be the first place that we will share any new additions and exciting news. Run by our well-informed experts I hope that followers will gain great insight into the quick-moving nature of our collection, being privy to the amazing details of the incredible intricacies of our luxury watches. I hope that the enthusiasm of our horology team inspires others to continue the legacy of each pre-owned watch, allowing clients to add their own chapter to the history of every timepiece.

What makes Laings Pre-Owned collection stand out?

Our pre-owned selection of watches is constantly changing and growing on a daily basis. For me, what makes it stand out is the variety of watch brands we house in our showrooms and online. Rolex, OMEGA, Jaeger-LeCoultre, TAG Heuer to name a few. The variety is something that really appeals to our clients and especially those watch enthusiasts who are looking for something that not everybody else has. Our commitment to excellence means that each watch goes through a strict examination, ensuring quality while inviting clients to enjoy a piece of watchmaking history. Laings sees our Pre-Owned Collection as an opportunity, a chance to own a watch which has a rich heritage, a treasure to be cherished once again.”

Laings has been purveyors of fine jewellery and prestigious watches since 1840 and its Pre-Owned Collection of luxury timepieces allows you to delve into the world of watches, discovering exclusive, rare and limited-edition pieces. With an impressive display of esteemed Swiss craftsmanship, each model comes with a legacy to share and a future to behold, providing you with the opportunity to continue the story of an incredible timepiece. COLOURS OF LOVE

Universally inspiring, coloured gemstones herald a symphony of exotic secrets each one with their own story to tell. Luxury jeweller Fabergé crafts wonders of the imagination in its Colours of Love collection that sees bright sapphires meet rich red rubies and vivid emeralds for a breath-taking journey through colour.

54 | PRESTIGE SCOTLAND LAINGS | FABERGÉ | LAINGSUK.COM
Fabergé

Fabergé is an artist jeweller with a unique place in culture, adored for its exquisite jewellery, watches, objets d’art and imaginative bespoke commissions. Despite its history dating back nearly two centuries, Fabergé is known for its virtue of consistency with designs inspired by its legendary Imperial Easter Eggs series which first began in 1885. Today, Fabergé can be seen adorning the red carpets of cinema and music’s most illustrious events, worn by high-profile stars such as Helen Mirren and Dua Lipa while iterations of the iconic Fabergé Eggs have also made cameos on screen in James Bond Octopussy, Peaky Blinders and Ocean’s Twelve.

Fabergé’s Colours of Love collection celebrates special lifetime events, milestones, and memorable moments with inspirational gemstone-set engagement, anniversary and celebratory rings alongside pendants, earrings and bracelets. Exemplifying ‘A Life in Colour’, this Fabergé collection seamlessly fuses extraordinary coloured gemstones, artistic ingenuity and exceptional craftsmanship. Chosen for their exquisite colour, cut, clarity, and character, Fabergé’s vibrant gemstones complement beautiful precious metals for designs that cater to both contemporary and classical tastes. A feature to marvel at is the collection’s fascinating selection of coloured sapphires. Going beyond classic blue we see bright pinks and purples, that traverse into sunset hues of yellow and orange, illustrating the true spectacle of Fabergé jewellery.

In keeping with the fondness for delight, surprise, and discovery, Fabergé has concealed a hidden gemstone on the inside of some of the collection’s pieces. Either contrasting or complimenting the primary stones used in each design, the jeweller cleverly conceals an extra sparkle for your eyes only. Some of the most notable are the Gemfields responsibly sourced Mozambiquan rubies and Zambian emeralds that grace the inside of their precious gold settings.

Ensuring transparency across the supply chain, traceability is an important part of Fabergé’s offering. The gold used in the collection is Peruvian mined ore which contains no mercury, therefore supporting sustainability and guaranteeing complete accountability in all areas of the process. Additionally, Fabergé collaborates with Gemfields, an organisation that works with local communities, governments, and conservation NGOs to certify that every gemstone sold aids health, education, and livelihood initiatives while minimising effects on our environment and protecting biodiversity.

With a combined history of well over two centuries, Fabergé finds a home at Laings. Fabergé’s collections include Heritage – a quintessentially Fabergé offering drawing inspiration from its historic masterpieces, Colours of Love – a vibrant array of jewellery that exemplifies the philosophy of ‘A Life in Colour’, and Essence – a selection of egg-inspired jewellery that embodies Fabergé’s world of surprise and delight. The Year of the

Pearl

Once described by Jackie Kennedy as ‘always appropriate’ pearls have long been admired for their classic elegance. In a refreshing take on timeless, their lustrous beauty is recapturing the fashion world, captivating a new generation who are yet to discover their magic. From their esteemed origins to casual street style, pearls are popping up on runways and social feeds the world over, making them a firm favourite of the fashion-set.

65 | PRESTIGE SCOTLAND LAINGS | THE YEAR OF THE PEARL | LAINGSUK.COM

Since their discovery in Central and South America in the 15th century pearls have been in high demand on the global market. The only gemstone made by living animals, their natural phenomenon is extremely rare, with only one in one thousand oysters producing a pearl in their lifetime. Found in fresh or saltwater molluscs, pearls once required divers to retrieve them by hand with many of their trips rendered unsuccessful.

That was until 1893 when the pearl process was revolutionised by Kokichi Mikimoto, the first person to successfully culture a pearl. his pioneering spirit transformed the industry into what it is today. Only pearls of the highest quality and lustre can be bestowed the name ‘Mikimoto’, its founder’s mantra encouraging all to indulge in the allure of pearl jewellery.

Due to such scarcity, wearing pearl jewellery long represented wealth and status. This exclusivity favoured the gem among royals, with them often exchanged as gifts among generations.

Pearls quickly became known for symbolising elegance and virtue. Queen Elizabeth II was considered one of the most influential ladies in Britain, and her love for pearls was evident throughout her lifetime, her neck rarely seen undressed in the three-strand pearl necklace she received from her father. With the Queen’s passing last year, pearls are set to become a sentimental reminder for jewellery lovers all over the world.

Worn throughout modern history, we often see pearls in print, and on screen. Iconic occasions include Coco Chanel

in her memorable 1963 portrait where strands of the stones draped around her shoulders, making for one of the most noticeable images of the designer.

It’s also impossible to forget Audrey Hepburn’s dramatic pearls that captured audience attention in the opening sequence of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, a scene that has remained classic ever since. A multitude of A-listers pay homage to idols of the past central to transforming pearls into versatile, everyday accessories, their style today transcending jewellery and embellishing shoes, clothes, and bags.

With catwalks encouraging pearls to be worn across all styles and seasons, menswear has seen an unexpected revelation with many participating in the trend. We have seen the likes of Harry Styles, Shawn Mendes, Jaden Smith, and A$AP Rocky wearing pearls at several of their concerts and events throughout the year, often complimenting the return of vintage fashions. It is not unusual for jewellery trends to mirror fashions of bygone eras with many inspirations reflecting the exquisite, the bold, and the decadent of each decade.

The return of pearl jewellery brings with it fond memories of the past along with bright visions for the future to cement pearls in the zeitgeist for years to come. Discover the wonder of pearl jewellery and its history at Laings.

A Commitment to Making A MOUNTAIN OF DIFFERENCE

Contemporary, refined, and assertive, the perfect everyday watch has a number of aesthetic requirements. A model that knows no bounds is the Chopard Alpine Eagle. Founded in 1860 the Maison embodies a pioneering spirit and joyful character that translates through fine watchmaking and jewellery.

80 | PRESTIGE SCOTLAND LAINGS | CHOPARD | LAINGSUK.COM

Inspired by the Alps and the imperious strength of the majestic eagle, the Apline Eagle collection finds exceptionality in its movement and fine details while paying testament to the beauty of our earth.

As masters of their crafts, Chopard’s artisans are driven by passion. Their expertise shine through in every brilliant detail, and the Alpine Eagle is no exception. A herald to its origins, its namesake takes influence from the beauty of the mountains and the greatness of its wildlife. The Maison expresses this inspiration in its delicate intricacy, in its textured dial that evokes an eagle’s iris, with hands that call to mind the raptor’s feathers. The gently tapered bracelet comprises a single ingot-shaped link, topped by a raised central cap that is additionally reminiscent of its mountain biotope.

Special care is taken to select all of Chopard’s materials. This collection is designed to be in equal parts refined as it is high-performance and sees Chopard’s Lucent Steel used across the assembly for a uniquely durable, antiallergenic, and scratch-resistant offering. A continuum of Chopard’s devotion to fine watchmaking, the beating heart of the Alpine Eagle, is found in its movements. Exclusively developed in Chopard’s watchmaking workshops and chronometer-certified by the

Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute, four automatic calibres grace the collection with varying characteristics and styles.

Nature guides the hand of Chopard watchmakers, and a true testament to the Maison’s ethical approach is its latest commitment to protecting the Alpine environment, through the launch of the Alpine Eagle Foundation – of which Chopard’s Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele is a founding member.

Started in 2021 with the aim of reintroducing the white tailed eagle into its natural habitat, the foundation is committed to the goal of preserving the mountain range in all of its areas: as an essential environment, a place of life, a natural base for wild species, a home to vital glaciers and lakes as well as the source of great rivers such as the Rhône, the Rhine and the Po.

Chopard’s enduring commitment to this responsibility harmonises sweetly with the greatness of its horological expertise to create a symphony of excellence that is unmatched in its offering. Explore Chopard watchmaking and The Alpine Eagle at Laings Edinburgh or online at Laingsuk.com

Handcrafted Jewellery

SINCE 1840

Craftsmanship is a magic that weaves through beautifully created objects, a remarkable synthesis of skill, creativity and technical expertise, all brought to life by hand. Luxury jewellers, Laings has a history that is steeped in craftsmanship, with the founder James Laing dedicating his life to craft and artistry over 180 years ago.

In 1840 Glasgow was defined by a creative spirit. It was a city that was filled with excitement and the bustling streets held promise, with heads full of dreams of what could be. It was in this era of possibility that the craftsmanship that still defines Laings was evident, as skilled work, expertise and attention to detail came to the forefront.

Here James Laing founded Laings on the innate principles of artistry and craftsmanship, with an unwavering dedication to the precious skills that are required to create exquisite pieces of fine jewellery. This unrelenting desire to create objects of rare beauty is the beating heart of goldsmithing traditions, and a sentiment that followed as Laings moves through each chapter in its rich history.

The generations that followed built on this vision of craft. As we entered the Roaring Twenties in a haze of champagne bubbles and excitement, Laings used diamonds and gemstones to create magnificent shows. Art Deco lines and geometric details captured the imaginations of goldsmiths and designers and they married age-old techniques with innovative ideas, creating sensational designs that echoed the exhilarating nature of the era. As we moved through each decade and generation, craftsmanship transformed heirloom pieces creating sentimental meaning that is hard to put into words, awards were won celebrating the skills of goldsmiths and designers and incredible one-off pieces were created, none more special than the Laings 175 Necklace.

91 | PRESTIGE SCOTLAND LAINGS | HANDCRAFTED JEWELLERY | LAINGSUK.COM

The 175 Necklace is an outstanding piece of fine jewellery that commemorates a milestone year in Laings history. The incredible one-of-a-kind piece embodies the defining principles of craft that Laings is built on, demonstrating the artisanal skills of the goldsmiths and pushing the boundaries of jewellery design. Taking nearly a full year to create, the experienced specialists combined ancient skills with modern innovation throughout the process. This never-ending pursuit of perfection meant the necklace spent over six months in our workshops, with each of the 447 diamonds meticulously set by hand. The back of the necklace was also finished with a sapphire clasp, to provide an elegant counterbalance for 360 degrees of captivation.

Laings began its journey with skilled craftsmen at the bench, and this is how they continue their story, with time-honoured crafts at the foundation of everything they do. Their workshops are enchanting places where the artisanal skills that are vital to continuing the precious sentiment of exquisite pieces are preserved and passed on to the next generation of custodians, safeguarding these ancient skills for years to come. In a quiet, unspoken way sparkling examples of magic are created every day in this mesmerizing place with jewellery masterpieces of exquisite beauty and precision being crafted, becoming part of the long and rich continuum of jewellery history and proving that dreams really can become a reality. Looking back on the skills that founded Laings, they use the guiding principle of craft to write their future. Their workshops are at the heart of everything they do and it is here that you see the vision of collaborative spaces, where skilled goldsmiths work together in a technical and creative space, all united by the same passion, come to fruition. It is in this space that we see age-old skills paired with new techniques and innovation, working side-by-side in perfect harmony to reignite a love of craftsmanship for generations to come.

Their exceptional collection of jewellery has been curated to share landmark moments in life, with the emotional weight of craftsmanship acting as the starting point of their sentimental significance. Visit Laings and allow the expert team to help you to find a beautifully crafted item that will mark special moments from now and forever on.

The Ultimate GIFT OF LOVE

Beautiful, complex, eternal and unreserved – the multitude of forms that love takes has fascinated humanity for millennia. It is an emotion that can live quietly and contentedly in the everyday, but it is one that also needs to be celebrated, with love stories extolled for the wonderful tales that they tell.

100 | PRESTIGE SCOTLAND
LAINGS | THE ULTIMATE GIFT OF LOVE | LAINGSUK.COM

Diamonds have long been a way to commemorate love, with the incredible gemstones representing its limitless possibilities. For generations, they have been given as gifts of love in its neverending varieties. And it is easy to see why these incredible gemstones have come to symbolise the most powerful emotion of them all.

The word diamond comes from the Greek word ‘adamas’, meaning invincible, showing the pure strength of the diamond itself. This remarkable quality came to represent the power of unbreakable love, a love that is eternal and everlasting, invincible. Throughout history the sparkling gem was then used to symbolise declarations and promises of love in all kinds of ways, becoming a talisman for anyone who wanted to celebrate the beautiful bonds that they had formed.

Like every love story, diamonds have also been on a fascinating journey. Formed over 100 miles below the surface of the earth, in an incredibly hostile environment, diamonds need conditions that are just right to form. The gemstones are essentially carbon, and the perfect combination of intense pressure and temperature is needed to form the crystalline structure of the gem, giving it its sparkle and fire. Some gems can form in only a matter of days, whereas other take months, or years and most are millions, if not billions of years old. This is all down to the environment, if the temperature or pressure changes the formation of the stone can be interrupted and will have to wait for the right conditions to continue its journey. An inspiring piece of nature that has defeated all of the odds.

Diamonds are such a sentimental gemstone. I bought a ring in memory of someone special to me. It means the world to me and I wear it every day. It is the same for our clients. I hear so many stories of love, not one the same, and it is such a privilege to help them find the one unique diamond to celebrate these stories. – Louise Ramsay

Louise Ramsay, Diamond Manager at Laings notes: “One thing that has always fascinated me is how diamonds are a completely natural phenomenon. I love that something that has been hidden underground for billions of years can be transformed into something so beautiful.”

Each diamond then waits patiently through the ages for the moment it can tell your love story. Diamond jewellery is often charged with emotion, acting as a token of love and carrying its own special meaning. Whether it is an engagement ring given to mark your commitment of forever, a bracelet gifted to a daughter to represent unconditional love or a pair of earrings for a friend that has always been there, the feeling tied to each piece is undeniable.

True love in all its forms is something special that is as rare as a diamond itself, and it deserves to be celebrated and acknowledged. The gift of a diamond is a way to show how much someone means to you, allowing them to hold this sentiment with them, always feeling connected. Laings understands that diamonds are the ultimate gift of love and hosts an exquisite collection of jewellery, curated to honour incredible stories and limitless possibilities. For generations they have shared with clients the special relationships that beautiful jewellery symbolises helping them to find luxurious gifts to carry these sentiments for years to come.

Visit Laings and allow the expert team to help you to find the perfect gift to celebrate your love.
