Melton’s, York

Michael & Lucy Hjort (pictured left) opened Melton’s in June 1990. Michael trained with Roux Restaurants, who in the 1980s dominated the restaurant scene. He returned to his native York, in the 1990s, to open Melton’s Restaurant with his wife Lucy (who still runs Front of House).

Melton’s is a fine dining restaurant serving modern British food and it was Michael’s position as Chef Proprietor, which made it one of York’s leading restaurants. Yorkshireman, Calvin Miller worked with Michael for over 12 years and has been head Chef for the last 8, proudly developing Melton’s dishes over that time.

Melton’s is featured in all the major food guides and is renowned for serving high quality food in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. In 2001 Michael opened Melton’s Too; now known as ‘Walmgate Ale House’ and he heads the kitchen at The Chopping Block – the Anglo-French restaurant above the Ale House.

Since its foundation in 1997, Michael has been one of the principal organisers of the York Food Festival and is now the Festival Director. His commitment to this Festival arises out of his enthusiastic support of the local quality food industry.

Having met whilst in a wine bar / bistro in London. Sandy and Clement share a passion for great food, wine and hospitality has led them to their dream of opening a bistro together - their favourite type of establishment. Both are very excited for this to happen in Sandy’s hometown of Leeds, bringing some of Clément’s native French flair to the city.

The couple are delighted to introduce Bavette. A neighbourhood bistro filled with warm engaging hospitality, with a menu of seasonally led classically driven dishes. With a hope to get that balance of generosity and quality right - that juxtaposition of everyday special. Prashad

Drighlington

Prashad was started by Kaushy and Mohan Patel in 1992. For twenty years, Prashad inhabited a Bradford sidestreet; a meeting-point, a hub, a treasure trove of ingredients, and a centre for gorgeous Gujarati snacks and dishes, prized by the whole community. Prashad moved to Drighlington in 2012. Kaushy and Mohan’s two sons followed their parents’ foodie passion. Mayur started the trendy craft beer and Gujarati food emporium Bundobust, whilst Bobby carried on the Prashad legacy. When Minal became Bobby’s wife, she arrived into a family she didn’t know had such a foodie focus. The stars had aligned; food was Minal’s passion too! She was taken under the Prashad wing, and quickly became the inspiring chef behind Prashad’s continued evolution, taking over the kitchen in 2004. She oversaw the restaurant crowned runner-up in Gordon Ramsay’s Britain’s Best Restaurant competition in 2010. Minal has taken the Prashad legacy and run with it; keeping the ethos of a warm welcome and authentic, finelycrafted Gujarati tastes, but infusing even more finesse, innovation and modernity into the dishes Prashad is famous for. Prashad has now been open for over 30 years.

Take Art

Ann Smith speaks with Claire Baxter, Harrogate based Artist and Gallery Owner.

Claire Baxter is a Yorkshire oil painter and incredibly proud of her home county. Working in oil, she paints Yorkshire towns and landscapes in a quirky, fun and colourful style, telling stories in a ‘snapshot’ where the characters represent us, people we know, our family, friends and true Yorkshire grit! This is why you never see their faces – they are for you to recognise. The story is yours! With evocative titles, they spark memories, emotions and humour.

“My mind is always working overtime, seeing potential paintings in almost everything.”

Yorkshire based Claire said ‘’I don’t have to look too far for inspiration. I am so blessed that Yorkshire is my home. From town and city to coast and countryside. I also find great inspiration in Yorkshire folk! I love to explore these funny situations, real life stories, songs and films. My mind is always working overtime, seeing potential paintings in almost everything. I start each piece using many photographs and sketch the sections I wish to use. I then decide on the story and the characters, sketch the characters from my imagination or other images I have filed and then use Photoshop to manipulate my sketches into a composition.

“I don’t have to go far for inspiration. I am so blessed that Yorkshire is my home. From town and city to coast and countryside. I also find great inspiration in Yorkshire folk!”

This allows me the freedom to move things around without the use of a rubber!! From there, I am able to draw and then enjoy the painting process, using oils to build up layers of detail. There is never the same process. Sometimes the location comes first, other times a title or a situation between characters can throw me into a creative whirlwind. I never really know how a painting will look at the end. I have vague idea, but it morphs and changes as the painting evolves. Characters sometimes move or get edited; clothes can change, or colours are adapted. I’m always trying to create balance within the painting’’

Claire also painted a collection called The Wonderful World of George and Daphne which has been published nationwide since 2016 through the UK Art Publishers ArtKo. George and Daphne are a more illustrative collection and Claire advised that she ‘’loves the freedom that it gives me in terms of creativity. My Yorkshire collection is very accurate in terms of the architecture whereas George and Daphne are imaginary and really allows more freedom’’

Claire actually started selling her work in her local park in Harrogate fifteen years ago, hanging it off railings and on benches whilst juggling very small children and a teaching career. Having left teaching in 2014 and with lots of perseverance, Claire opened her Gallery in Pateley Bridge in 2019. Based on its success, she then opened her Knaresborough Gallery in April 2023 and now employs 5 members of staff and both Galleries are Award Winning. The stock not only includes Claire’s work but that of other local artists who are looking for representation. This means that a large stock with a large and varied selection of art from glass and ceramics to wood and felt are always on offer.

Claire’s highlights so far were when she was announced as the Official Artist of Tour de Yorkshire in 2020 (which was unfortunately victim to Covid), along with being a finalist for UK Most Popular Published Artist 2022 and Best Rural Business 2023. Claire now looks forward to opening another Gallery and with the help of her fantastic staff, bringing more art to people’s homes.
