We've unpacked 2013; the cover and wrapping are off, and the new year is well under way. Hopefully you've fallen into the habit of saying, writing and typing "2013" instead of "2012." The kids are back in their school routine; the work schedule has resumed its normal pace; our homes have settled down after the rush of holiday visitors and parties, cooking and cleaning; and the mile-long Christmas "to do" list seems like a thing of the distant past. For Taylors, gratefully, we have a handful of Sundays under our belt with our new Sunday morning schedule and I couldn't be more excited about what's ahead. Our new modern worship venue in the Fellowship Hall has seen people engage in a genuine, intimate way. Our adult Life Group structure has been strengthened and our teachers and leadership teams have been challenged to grow disciples. Our student ministry has been “United on Wednesday evenings, and has adopted a new format on Sunday mornings for growing disciples under the direction and service of more than forty adult leaders and teachers. Bible studies for women and mentoring groups for men are in motion and we sense God's movement in the lives of these smaller communities. Yet, here's the trap: our spiritual lives simply become habit, routine, take on a normal pace. We settle down, and the excitement and energy of getting things done quickly and surely becomes a thing of the past. How do we avoid this trap? The Apostle Paul's letter to the local church in Colossae helps us. This church plant had grown spiritually where the gospel was having impact among followers of Jesus in this community and beyond. But Paul desired something more for the church and he expressed it in his opening prayer. Take a moment to read it, found in Colossians 1:3-14. Specifically, his entire prayer for this church helps me, as your pastor, to pray for you. It helps light the way for us all as to how we are to avoid the trap of our walk with Christ becoming routine. Let me point you to one verse (1:11): May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy. We've all sensed when our "walk" with the Lord (1:10) lacks power. Thus, even Bible studies, worship, and service can become habit or routine. But Paul's prayer for the church, the Holy Spirit's desire for us, and my desire as your pastor is that we all experience what God has in unlimited supply -- His mighty power made available to those who will simply seek to encounter Him and engage others (1:10). So how is this accomplished? Ask yourself these two questions and talk about it with others: How will I approach and seek God differently this year, on Sunday as well as on Monday through Saturday, in public worship and in private times alone with Him? What smaller community will I engage in for the purposes of seeing change in my life and in the lives of others? I heard a Christian university commencement speaker tell the story of a parade in which a float, sponsored by an oil and gas company, stopped. The vehicle transporting the float ran out of gas! He couldn't help but chuckle. While the company had abundant access to everything needed to make the vehicle go, they had simply forgotten to fill the tank. So the challenge and opportunity before us this year is this: that we, as individuals, become so dependent upon God's power through the Spirit, that collectively we don't run out of gas. Don't allow things to become routine, normal, habit, or simply a list to check off. "Be filled" or be controlled by the Spirit of God (Ephesians 5:18), submitting and depending upon His power to energize and fuel your relationship with Him and with others. Then watch God work and let's walk together differently this year. Paul

Mission: Washington, D.C.

Imagine being eight blocks from the Capitol Building, pregnant, and desperate for help. That’s how many women who come into the Capitol Hill Pregnancy Center feel. It is one of many agencies the college ministry worked with during their mission trip over Christmas break. Because they are mainly operated by volunteers, our group cleaned, organized, and prepared mail-outs for the center, freeing the workers to share hope in Christ with the women who come into the building. Students also served at Central Union Mission and National Community Church. Central Union serves 21,000 people a year through food and supplies with only four warehouse employees. The group prepared food boxes, reorganized most of the warehouse, and moved a ton of food to storage. Likewise, the group helped National Community Church prepare their new property for use. It is an eighty-five year old building that needs lot of work. The college students cleaned and performed demolition on old parts of the building. I’m proud of the eighteen students who came on the trip and worked extremely hard. Even though we will not be able to see immediate fruit from the labor, it will be great to celebrate what God is able to do with the church and these ministries.

“ It was a really cool opportunity to work alongside an inner city pregnancy center and National Community Church’s campus. I loved getting a chance to serve in a new community and make new friends.” -Amanda Lee

Because everyone faces challenges at various times in life, Taylors FBC created

HoPeNeT

to offer hope and healing to those facing difficult times and to meet specific needs in the community around us.

R3 MINISTRY Impacting the Taylors Community for the Sake of the Gospel After much prayer, immersion in Scripture and seeking God’s will, R3 ministries moved forward in December of 2011 and met our friends who live outside in our community and also began to forge relationships with the ladies at “Just For Today” recovery house. Amazing relationships have developed and hearts and souls have been touched in the name of Jesus Christ. Several of our new friends have come to know the Lord and have been baptized while others have started a journey that will hopefully lead them there also. The R3 2012 Christmas luncheon was an idea formed when we met with our homeless friends for breakfast one Saturday morning. We were so in awe of all God had accomplished in the last year, we felt a celebration was definitely in order. At our luncheon we saw a large crowd gather from all the areas of our ministry to fellowship and celebrate what the Lord is doing through R3. Our "Food with Friends" people were very excited to be a part of such a gathering. They were dressed in their best and one was even wearing jeans donated by our group.

It warmed our hearts to see the JFT ladies join us also, along with members of our team who respond to emergency needs. It was great to see all the people whom R3 is impacting gathered in one place. We thank the Lord everyday for ordaining and cultivating these relationships and seek His wisdom and guidance as we nurture and grow this ministry. Thank you to the amazing members of Taylors FBC who have embraced and supported these efforts. Whether it is to sponsor a breakfast, pick up one of the ladies for church, respond to a call for canned goods and pantry items, or most recently, donate coats to be given to Greer Relief to help keep those in the shadows of our own steeples warm this winter, you have always responded with very generous and loving hearts. These people, with whom God has allowed us to work, have become family and we have been blessed far beyond any time, efforts or resources we have given. To God be the glory; great things He has done!

Taylors Town Square In October 2012, as an outgrowth of R3 Ministries’ desire to “build relationships to unite our community,” and after months of prayer and planning, Taylors TownSquare was launched to be a venue of open conversation about the community of Taylors. Taylors TownSquare has brought together over fifty business people, artists, and residents of Taylors, along with interested members of the greater upstate community, to learn about each other, to begin conversations about where the heart of Taylors is located, and to dream about what Taylors can be if we all come together with a shared vision. For more information about Taylors TownSquare, contact Kaitlyn Ross at kaitlynr@ taylorsfbc.org or 864-678-8833.

Did You Know? In the world, there are approximately 145 million orphans. In South Carolina, there are more than 5,400 children in foster care. On average, each child will spend four years in care and live in four different homes. As we see these numbers, it seems an insurmountable challenge that God has given us. At the same time, we are continually humbled by what God has done in the Mission 1:27 ministry — just in the past year.

Since the January 2012 launch of Mission 1:27, take a look at what God has done through this ministry and Taylors First Baptist members:
