PROF. BARBARA LEWTDWAITE In her fifth year of full-time teaching at Centenary, Prof. Barbara Lewthwaite has been chosen as one of the 1993 yearbook's Accolades. The Class of 1993, she said, has been a most affable group of students. This class is the second that she has seen through four complete college years. As the senior class advisor, Prof. Lewthwaite said these students are more vocal, and they stand up for what they believe in, more than any other class she has seen. "They're the last group to escape the Centenary Seminars," she said, "by the skin of their teeth." She also described the class as one that has experience, scrambling for those last-minute electives. Prof. Lewthwaite said she likes the fact that Centenary offers the ability to get to khow students on a personal level. In the small classes students can't escape because the teachers know if they're all present and accounted for. Prof. Lewthwaite also finds the counseling aspect of her job to be very interesting. Her other activities with students are the Dean's Trophy and the High School Business Competition. She says she feels strongly that the Class of 1993 is one that communicates.
DR. CHARLES FREDERICKSON The Class of 1993 is proud to announce Dr. Charles Frederickson as one of the recipients of the 1993 yearbook Accolade. Dr. Frederickson was a psychologist in a variety of settings including hospitals and clinics before he decided to concentrate on teaching. He also taught at Montclair State College before settling at Centenary in 1981. His activities have included a counseling service at Centenary, and, currently, he is the advisor for Psychology majors and the Freshman Class. Dr. Frederickson hopes to have been an influence on all the students that have filled his classrooms. He loves to see students reach their goals, but he has a sense of sadness when he sees them graduate. "I hope I have said or done something that will make a difference to students," he said. When several seniors were asked to comment on Dr. Frederickson, they smiled and said, "He's cool!"

by Matthew Guiliano Karl Malone. Derrick Coleman. Andrew Green. What do all of these people have in common? They all played at Brendan Byrne Arena on Tuesday, Nov.17. It's true!!! The Centenary Men's Basketball team shared the court with the New Jersey Nets and the Utah Jazz. The Cyclones traveled to the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J., to play St. Thamas Aquinas College. The game between the two schools was a preliminary for the N.B.A. game and proved to be an experience that the players, coaches, and fans will remember for a long time to come. Junior Frank Ferraro said, "It was a great thrill to play on the same court that my favorite pro- players had played on before." Unfortunately for the Cyclones, they ended up on the losing end of a hard-fought battle. ''They're depth is what really hurt us," said Lance Rose, the team's point guard. He added, "Most teams we play go 15 to 18 players deep; we only have 10 players." Even though it was a loss for the Cyclones, the players still thought it was a great experience. Freshman Ben McCargo said, "At first I was a little overwhelmed. I've never played in such a big place, but coach told us to treat it like any other game." Senior co-captain, Kevin Boswell, added, "Once the initial excitement wore off it was time to just play ball and concentrate on winning." When asked how this experience ranked with other Cyclone milestones in the past four years, Andrew Green, the team's other captain, responded, "This was third. My best memory is our win at the St. Josephs' tournament last year, because winning is what it's all about. Next would be the team's trip to Alabama last year; it made me feel like I was playing at a big school." He concluded, "This game was right up there with those great memories." Even the fans got in on the act. Cardy Gemma, the team's head coach, sold the tickets at a discounted rate to students and faculty. The tickets enabled the fans to watch the college game as well as the professional game that follwed. Fred Mangione, a student of the college and a member of the first male basketball team at Centenary, summed up the day's events by saying, "I was so excited when I looked up at the scoreboard and saw that it read CYCLONES; it was like I was at a major college game." From here the Cyclone men will continue a long, hard schedule taking teams like Montclair State and East Stroudsburg. The team feels confident that if they play at the level they are capable of, it will be a very successful year.

WNTI -- TO THE RAINFOREST RESCUE This article is printed as it appeared in The Quill in December, 1992.
by Diana Schmitt In the time it took to write this article, a rainforest the size of 80 city blocks was burned and destroyed. WNTI is doing something to help save the planet's irreplaceable rainforests. The staff of 91.9 FM is asking listeners to donate $1 .00 in the effort to save them. For each $10 donation, 2,500 square feet of rainforest will be preserved in WNTI's name for one year. The station's goal is to raise $100, which will save 250,000 square feet. Currently, WNTI is over a quarter of the way toward reaching its goal, with $26 donated during the past two weeks. "Saving the rainforests is a great cause," said Prof. Eric Slater, general manager of WNTI. "The impact of their destruction as we've been shown is devasting to the environment. We all should be willing as much as possible to save the rainforests." According to the National Arbor Day Foundation, rainforests make up the world's largest pharmaceutical storehouse and provide sources for one quarter of today's medicines. Seventy percent of the plants found to have anti-cancerous properties are being destroyed.
An oil tanker carrying nearly 25 million gallons of crude oil lost power or was blown onto the rugged coastling of the Bay of Quendale, 100 miles north of Aberdeen, Scotland. The 100-island Shetlands group in the North Sea is sparsely populated but abounds with birds, seals, fish, and other wildlife.
The Environmental Protection Agency issued rules aimed at curbing industrial air pollution. The new rules outlined when businesses must obtain state pollution control permits under the Clean Air Act. Environmental groups, such as the Sierra Club, lead the charge against polluters. The Clean Air Act requires businesses to meet new clean air requirements by reducing toxic emissions and releases that contribute to smog. Under the rule, states issue pollution control permits and the EPA monitors state programs to make certain they comply with federal rules.
