ZOLDAN LOOKS FOR REACTION U’s hope to bounce back against Thame ANDY Zoldan is looking for a reaction from his players as Abingdon United welcome Thame United to the Northcourt in the Hellenic Premier Division this Saturday. United suffered their second successive league defeat last weekend with a 5-2 home loss at fellow strugglers Newbury. A win last weekend would have seen Zoldan’s men move above third from bottom Newbury but the defeat leaves them three points behind the Berkshire Club and in 19th place. The result does not tell the full story as United created several opportunities to put the game to bed with the game at 2-2. When asked if he thought last Saturday was a missed opportunity, Zoldan said: “Yes I do. “I think if we had gone a little bit more defensive to start with that may have been better for us. “I’d say judgement on my behalf was wrong. “If we had started more defensively, which we have in the other games and won, then we could have held out at 0-0 and won it one or two nil. “But because it was one we thought we could win we went a little more attacking and we ended up paying the price for that but it could have been so much different had we put our chances away at 2-2.

“We’ve lost ground but the best thing we can do is bounce back and put in a better performance on Saturday.” Even if United fi nish second from bottom it is still unknown whether or not that will mean relegation due to principles established by the Leagues Committee of the FA. At the end of the season, the two clubs at the top of each Division One may be promoted to the Premier Division provided that in the opinion of the Management Committee the facilities are satisfactory. However, with 11 games remaining Zoldan is targeting at least third from bottom. “That is our realistic target,” he said, “and anything from there we would have to expect the teams above to continue bad runs. “There are a few teams in the positions above us that are not getting results either but are picking up one or two wins. “There is lots of talk about one or two teams going down but we won’t know until the leagues sit down and talk. “I’d be happier if we were sat fourth bottom rather than second • Abingdon United's Adam Doyle in action against Newbury last week (Picture by Chris Janes) bottom.”
