PLANS for a wind farm of 14 turbines near Basingstoke have been recommended for refusal. It comes ahead of a special meeting in which councillors are due to make a decision on the plans on Monday. Council officers proposed the plans should be rejected in their report published this week. A meeting is being held at Bapsey Hall in Winchester Guildhall, High Steet, from 10am for a decision by councillors to be made. Planning permission for the 14-turbine wind farm was submitted by EDG Energy Renewables to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, Test Valley Borough Council, and Winchester City Council in May last year. They cross into the land of the three councils, therefore all three are coming together for the special meeting. Officers at all three recommended the plans be rejected. Councillors are due to visit the

site at Bullingdon Cross west of Basingstoke on Friday ahead of the decision day. Four of the turbines at the planned Bullingdon Cross Wind Farm in Norten, Sutton Scotney, would cross into Basingstoke and Deane land. They would stand 126.5m high and last for 25 years. In Basingstoke and Deane 1,431 people wrote in support of the plans and 1,329 opposed them. A petition was also signed by 3,081 people opposing the plans. It stated there would be “great dangers of mid-air collisions” between the turbines, military planes and helicopters, and Microlight planes. BASINGSTOKE siblings kicked off the live Britain’s Got Talent finals as the first act in front of 12 milllion TV viewers on Saturday. Ben and Joanne Davies, from Dartmouth Road, South Ham, launched the show with dance troupe Addict Initiative. Despite not winning the ITV talent show on Saturday the pair said it was far from a defeat. They were given a standing ovation from Simon Cowell and David Walliams after the performance which Ben choreographed. Ben, 25, twisted the Hansel and Gretel-themed fairy-tale into an energetic, dark and sinister dance story for the show. He watched as sister Joanne, 22, danced with the 26-strong group. Joanne said: “To be able to say we were in the top 10 fi nalists in Britain’s Got Talent is incredible. “We are all still absolutely buzzing, I don’t think we will come down from this for a while. “It felt amazing, it was a once in a lifetime experience. Joanne had to leave her job in Human Resources to put in the practise hours for the show. She is now touring around the UK with the Leicester-based Addict Dance Studios dance group. Ben was given a promotion from choreographer to artistic

A MUM nominated for a national volunteering award has said the team behind her has been key to her charity’s success. Emma Hall co-founded Stepping Stones in November 2006 with Sharon Smith – both had children with Down’s Syndrome. It initially began as a simple coffee morning, as Fleet mum Emma wanted to meet people in her situation. Now, seven-and-a-half years on, the Surrey-based charity supports over 100 families who have children with the condition. And Emma has fought off over 700 others to be in the ďŹ nal ďŹ ve for Britain’s Best Volunteer award, organised by charity insurer Markel UK and the Small Charities Coalition. Emma’s daughter Isla, now eight, has the condition. Emma also has another daughter,

The charity’s parent support worker, according to Emma, could not walk into the ďŹ rst coffee morning, as she was too scared to admit her daughter had the condition. “And now new families who report back to us say that she is the reason they actually come along and get involved,â€? added Emma. “We’ve grown based on what people have asked for – such as training for their schools, activities for the children. Voting is open until March 21, with the winner announced three days later.

Council’s warn of air crashes with turbines • From front page Laverstoke and Freefolk Parish Council, Overton Parish Council, Steventon Parish Council, and Hurstbourne Priors Parish Council all objected to the plans. The concerns raised included visual impact, noise, vibrations, their close proximity to Popham airfield, and the threat to declining birds and animals. Laverstoke and Freefolk Parish Council said: “The area is used for Ministry of Defence helicopter training runs and private fl ights in fi xed wing planes, gliders & hot air balloons. “The construction of the turbines could lead to the forced closure of Popham airfield – a valued local business and the re-routing of helicopters closer to dwellings – which will result in increased disturbance and could present a risk to householders.” Steventon Parish Council said: “Each turbine, over 400ft high to blade tip, is as high as the spire of Salisbury Cathedral, and the 14 turbines are distributed over a large area nearly two miles square. “The visual impact on this beautiful and renowned area of rolling Hampshire downland is therefore very severe, and, being on high ground 300ft above sea

level the turbines would dominate the skyline when viewed from over a very wide area.” However Hampshire Renewable Energy Co-operative (HREC), based off Basing View, Basingstoke, counted up more than 2,000 signatures of support to councils last month. HREC plans to own 10 per cent of the 14 turbines under a community ownership scheme. HREC director Martin Heath said: “We have over 2,800 supporters for the Bullington Cross wind farm, which is an unprecedented level of support for any pre-planning wind farm in the UK. It shows that the people of Hampshire want clean, modern and efficient renewable energy and they want the benefits to be returned to local residents.” Members and supporters of HREC are meeting outside Winchester Guildhall to show their support for the plans. Officers at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council wrote up a three page conclusion as to why the plans should be refused which included visual impact and military aircraft safety among its many reasons.

Mystery man walks away a millionaire A mystery man from Basingstoke beat the bookies to walk away with £1m after picking all six winning horses at the Surrey races. The 40-year-old, who wants to stay anonymous, put £5,400 on a Lucky 63 accumulator bet on the six races with Coral bookmakers at Sandown Park in Esher on May 29. The man watched the races with friends and cracked open champagne in the box when his fi nal horse crossed the line. Coral spokesman Simon Clare said: “It is an extraordinary achievement to go through the card like this and he deserves every penny of his million pound win. “He is a really nice guy and has been a Coral customer for a few years now so if someone is going to win a million pounds off Coral I’m glad it’s him.” The lucky punter, who works in fi nance, picked a horse called Brown Panther owned by former England striker Michael Owen, as one of his lucky six. He was waiting on 5-2 favourite Ishikawa to win in the 8.50pm race to make his million. The horse edged ahead by half-a-length. He visited the Coral box in excitement four races in and returned after the sixth to ask Coral’s representative Mark Elks how much he had won. When Mr Elks told the man how much he had won he stood dumbstruck before asking: “Can I give you a hug?”

But Paul and Rob Forkan, aged 24 and 26, are celebrating business success as one of London’s most exclusive stores prepares to launch their product on Monday. Liberty in Regent Street is unveiling a range of Gandys fl ip flops, a business the brothers set up alongside a social initiative for orphans in developing countries. Aged 11 and 13, Paul and Rob, and siblings Mattie, nine, and Rosie, five, were taken out of their London school by parents Kevin and Sandra to travel around India. The family moved to Sri Lanka when the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami hit in which their parents were lost. The brothers moved back to their sister’s in Hampshire where Paul went to Basingstoke College of Technology from 2007

A Hampshire County Council consultation on the plans launched last week and runs until July 21. A county council statement said: “Throughout Hampshire the birth rate has risen in recent years which, has created a pressure on pupil place together with significant new housing. “This equally applies to the Basingstoke area and has resulted in an increase in pupil numbers. “Hampshire County Council anticipates that this level of demand will continue and therefore is proposing to enlarge Marnel Infant & Junior Schools to meet this need.” It added: “The county council appreciates that local residents will be concerned about potential traffic implications around the expansion of the schools.” To respond to the consultation go to consultations.hants. gov.uk/active.aspx

Campaigners say it is the fi rst time an unannounced protest has managed to shut off all the roads. Two people were arrested in the blockade by Ministry of Defence Police, which began before 7am and fi nished at about Midday. Police cleared one of the roads by 11am. Protestors were opposing the British nuclear weapons security programme called Trident. Trident is made up of warheads – explosive bombs, the missiles which carry them, and the submarines which carry the missiles. The warheads are made by the AWE. HUNDREDS of colourful kites took to Basingstoke’s skies as part of the town’s 22nd kite festival last weekend. Up to 6,000 flocked to the Basingstoke Kite Festival at Down Grange Sport Complex in Pack Lane on Saturday and Sunday. Among them was five-year-old Ava Meads, who said it was “the best day of my life”. The Old Basing Infants School pupil won the key stage one kite design competition with her drawing of a multicoloured butterfly. On Sunday she was presented with a kite made from her design by Mayor of Basingstoke Roger Gardiner. Ava said: “My kite was beautiful. Meeting the mayor was my favourite bit. “I ran really fast to make it fly.” Dad Sean Meads, from Basingfield Close, said: “It was fantastic. The shock was Ava was the youngest of all the winners. “Ava looked up to the Mayor in awe. He is so tall and she is so small so it was really funny to watch. “She loved seeing her kite design made into a real kite, she

Mayor’s welcome for Post Box riders By Katriona Ormiston news@basingstokeobserver.co.uk

A WELCOME brigade cheered on two intrepid cyclists at Alton’s gold post box in their 3,000-mile charity mission to each of Britain’s 111 Olympic gold post boxes. Alton’s town crier Stan Whitcher and mayor Graham Hill greeted Chris Britton, from Bristol, and Lucas Meagor, from Kingston upon Hull, at the Paper Mill Lane post box last Tuesday. They then peddled to the gold post box at neighbouring village Bentworth where schoolchildren welcomed them waving handdrawn posters. The children, who waited for over an hour after school, cheered as they cycled down the road. Mr Britton and Mr Meagor are mid-way through their challenge, which is thought to be the fi rst man powered continuous trip to all 111 gold post boxes. Lucas Meagar said “We have been so overwhelmed by the support we have received in Alton and Bentworth. We have never had a Town Crier and a Town Mayor greet us before. “We shall take the Bentworth school children’s posters with us,

Flood protection group launched in Hampshire A PARTNERSHIP has been launched to plan how to protect Hampshire from future flood and storm damage, following this winter’s heavy rainfall in the county. Hampshire County Council, water companies, and energy companies agreed last week to work together to discuss what can be done to prevent future flood damage. Hampshire County Council leader Roy Perry met with key representatives of Scottish and Southern Energy, Southern Water and Thames Water in Winchester. They agreed to form a partnership to share information such as access to aerial photographs and flood mapping to fi nd ways to fi x the problems which led to flooding. The utility companies will be invited to attend a Hampshire Partnership meeting at a date to be set to discuss ideas. Cllr Perry said: “Staff from the utility companies were among those who battled through horrific conditions, day and night, to keep Hampshire moving. “We recognise the utility companies have a very important

role, alongside Hampshire County Council and other partner organisations, in ensuring that disruption to communities is minimised as much as possible in the event of future extreme weather conditions. Cllr Perry added: “We are doing all we can to help communities who may fi nd themselves without utilities for any length of time. “Partnerships such as these put us in good stead for the challenges we may face in the future.” Basingstoke was hit badly in the January floods. About 70 homes were evacuated in Buckskin in Basingstoke during the February floods. Flooding also overwhelmed the town’s sewers. More than 300 homes across the county were flooded during the winter. The county council is currently waiting to fi nd out if it has been successful in bids to the Government for money to repair flood damage. It estimated last month damage done, repair work and future flood schemes across Hampshire will cost about £68m.

It starts at 11am, and further details can be found at centralstudio.co.uk.

“It’s very exciting,” said Shirley. “It has many twists and turns, and I hope some very exciting performances in it. “We keep it in the period, we wear lovely dresses and we don’t touch each other to keep the formality of it. “It’s very hard when you use the modern day stuff not to touch people you’re talking to, but we don’t do any of that, we keep to Victorian morals.” So far the show has been warmly received by audiences across the country, as it prepares for its fi rst Basingstoke performance this evening. Shirley is also looking forward to seeing the original fi lm for Ladies in Retirement, which she has yet to watch. “I didn’t see it because I was saving it as a treat for myself,” said Shirley. “But on the last leg of the tour, I got rather poorly, so all I could do was concentrate on the show. “I also didn’t want my performance to be copying or chasing mannerisms from someone else, but now I think I’ll settle down for a treat and have a look at it.” For a full list of show times and ticket prices, go to anvilarts.org uk or call the box office on 01256 844244. • Shirley Anne Field (left) and Érin Geraghty star in Ladies In Retirement

GRADUATES and students from the University of Winchester bring their adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic comedy Twelfth Night to the Proteus Creation Space next Monday. Set in the fictional kingdom of Illyria, Twelfth Night sees the twins Viola and Sebastian separated in a shipwreck at the start of the play. It focuses on Illyria’s Countess Olivia falling in love with Viola, who is disguised as a boy, while Sebastian in turn falls in love with Olivia. The young cast have worked alongside professional theatre company Platform 4 to stage the production, as part of their New Tempest Club. Helen Grime, a lecturer at the University of Winchester, has been working with the New Tempest Club since it began five years ago. She said: “We’ve been running this project, where we work with recent graduates and students, along with professional theatre makers, to produce a small-scale touring piece in the summer. “Some of the participants have been

Supermini praised for its style and running costs as it is named best small car for 2014

Top honours for Citroën DS3

• The Citroën DS3, the best small car for 2014 as voted by the What Car? JD Power Survey

Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency

A DRIVER satisfaction survey has named the Citroën DS3 as the best small car for 2014. The French supermini, which launched in 2010, scored 79.3 per cent for the What Car? JD Power Survey 2014 satisfaction survey. It means the car ranks 21 overall out of 109 models and scored two per cent over the average 77.3 per cent. The model was praised for its style, running costs, driver visibility, and colour options. Car owner Nick Baum, 44, said: “The DS3 never fails to put a smile on my face. It looks terrific, it’s comfortable and it’s quick; I went for the 1.6 VTi petrol motor. “The DS3 has plenty of room for my three boys in the back, even with the driver’s seat pushed all the way back to accommodate my long legs. “Equipment levels are great, with auto lights and wipers, cruise control and a decent stereo that connects to the iPhone.” What Car? editor Jim Holder said: “DS3 has really established itself as an extremely desirable small car – its bold, fun and customisable styling sets

By Timon Williams it apart from its competitors.” The model was names best supermini in the 2013 survey. Citroën UK’s managing director Linda Jackson said: “To top its class for two successive years is a fantastic result for DS3 and it is all the more special to win an award that is voted for by owners themselves. “Receiving such high praise for a variety of aspects, from styling to running costs, is testament to the DS3’s versatility and desirability as it continues to impress across the board.” Going into next years What Car? JD Power Survey, competitors of the DS3 Citroën model seem to have a lot of catching up to do in both technological and aesthetic fields in order to knock the DS3 off its top spot. The JD Power survey took place between January and March 2014, using cars registered between January 2011 and December 2012. Only models with more than 4,000 sales were considered - 109 in total.

Taking care of your motor FASTFIT Service Centre is celebrating its tenth anniversary at Unit One, Moniton Trading Estate in West Ham Lane. And the independent automotive specialist is proud to be expanding in a bid to give its customers exactly what they want. “Everything your car needs is here under one roof’’, explained manager Byron Lewis who, like his team of experts, has spent a lifetime in the automotive industry. He added: At Fastfit we offer hourly rates which are some of the best in Basingstoke. No job is beyond us and we are quite simply a one-stop shop and more besides. Whether it’s and entire engine overhaul or just tweaking the brakes. we will do it, and do it well.’’ The business is continually expanding and includes a new mobile tyre fitting and home start service. A comprehensive diagnostic service can also be provided and the business issues many dealer level tools ranging

from Ford, Jaguar to Land Rover and Volkswagen. Fastfit offers everything from MOTs and minor servicing to major repairs and complex engine work. More complex issues include an Engine Control Unit (ECU) remapping service which makes the vehicle more responsive and smoother to driver. In these tough time, it also slightly increases the miles-per-gallon! Fastfit Service Centre also stocks a rang of budget or performance tyres and it can also custom build stainless steel exhaust systems. “Come and give us a try. You won’t be disappointed,’’ concluded Byron.

What our customers think VË ßËW?ÁË ?aËMjj ËÍ? j ËÍ Ë three different repair centres which was suffering from low power none of them diagnosed the problem. I took it to these guys for a remap and full exhaust in the hopes it would fi x it. It was better but Byron still thought it wasn’t right so spent another couple of hours diagnosing it! He didn’t charge me extra and even fi nished after they should of closed. You just don’t get that kind of service these days. Amazing! Cheers, Clive Baldwin

Done the job quick and for a third of the price! These guys defi nitely know what they’re talking about and I would recommend them to anyone! Sport Rose ready for US Open title defence JUSTIN Rose begins his defence of his US Open title today, as he tees off at North Carolina’s Pinehurst course at 11.51am this morning. He will play alongside Open champion Phil Mickelson and last year’s US Open Amateur champion Matthew Fitzpatrick for the opening two rounds. Last year Rose won his fi rst major tournament after rounds of 71, 69, 71 and 70 at Merion, Pennsylvania, gave him a fi nal score of one over par. He fi nished two shots ahead of Mickelson and Australia’s Jason Day, and earned $1,440,000 for his efforts. Rose missed the cut in his last competitive match – the Memorial Tournament in Ohio – the fi rst time he had done so since March. Before that he had come 25th in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in Surrey, fi nishing 10 shots behind winner Rory McIlroy. He had enjoyed three top-10 fi nishes on the PGA tour inside three weeks in April and May, after coming tied-14th at the Masters on April 13. The US Open runs until Sunday. If more than one player is tied for the lead after the fi nal day, then an 18-hole play-off will decide the winner on the Monday.

Collard pleased with Oulton performance By Adam Flinn news@basingstokeobserver.co.uk

ROB Collard enjoyed his best British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) weekend of the season at Oulton Park on Sunday, picking up two podium places. The Hook driver lined up fourth on the grid for race one, and jumped up to second off the start, where he remained for the rest of the race. Collard repeated the feat in race two, but was moved back to third following a post-race penalty after being judged to have passed the Audi of Rob Austin under yellow flags. He was back in the podium positions in race three, but a spin resulting from being hit by Jason Plato dropped him to 11th at the end. “It’s been a phenomenal weekend for me in terms of my performance,” said Collard. “It was great to get my best result of the year in race two, but in race two, when the safety car was deployed, I slowed so that I didn’t pass Colin [Turkington] and Austin took advantage. “He gave me the place back but it was under the safety car, and

they reversed the places. “Overall the BMW has been very strong in both the wet and the dry, and we can be pleased with the speed we have shown.” Elsewhere, Odiham’s Nick Foster was denied a top-10 result in race two, after a throttle problem forced him to retire. Foster had fi nished eighth in the fi rst race, and was on course to do so again when he encoun-

tered the problem. He fought his way up the field from the back in race three to claim the fi nal points-scoring position of 15th. “The throttle problem was a real shame, especially as I was running in the position that was ultimately drawn on pole for race three,” said Foster. “The fi nal race was good and it was nice to score a point, but it was very much a case of bring-

ing the car home and not taking unnecessary risks.” Sunday’s results put Collard fi fth in the championship standings with 125 points, while Foster is 16th with 36 points. The next race is at Croft on June 29. • Collard scored his best result since 2012 at Oulton Park at the weekend (Picture courtesy of btcc.net)

New deals accepted by top Bison players BASINGSTOKE Bison have signed key players Tomas Karpov, Miroslav Vantroba and Andy Melachrino ahead of the new English Ice Hockey Premier League season. Czech-player Karpov was Bison’s top scorer last season, as he hit the net 43 times in 60 games before being named Supporters’ and Coaches’ Player of the Year. Fellow forward Melachrino scored 22 goals over the season, including the strike that

sealed the EPL Cup victory in Basingstoke. And Vantroba has also committed to the Herd for another year, after a strong season on the blue line. Bison player/coach Doug Sheppard said: “I think Tomas is capable of scoring 50 goals. He showed his all-round game in the play-offs and is a very humble guy. “Miro is one of the smartest players I have played with. “His puck management is so

good. “Andy had a great year for us and he will score even more this time. “He brings energy to his line and I will be playing alongside Tomas and Michael Wales at the start of the season.” • Tomas Karpov (pictured) has been re-signed by Bison along with Andy Melachrino and Miroslav Vantroba (Picture by Grant King (5holephotography.co.uk)

HAMILTON GETS BEST RESULT IN PORTUGAL Racer ready for Le Mans challenge BASINGSTOKE sports car driver Archie Hamilton continued his preparation for next weekend’s Le Mans race as he claimed second position in the International GT Open in Portugal on Sunday. He and co-driver Diederick Sijthoff took the V8 Racing Corvette to their fi rst podium fi nish of the season, following on from a disappointing fi rst round in Germany in May. Hamilton gained three positions after making a strong start in the second race at Portimao, before trading seats with Sijthoff after 15 laps. The Dutch driver was able to hold on to the second position Hamilton had got into until the end of the race.

By Adam Flinn news@basingstokeobserver.co.uk

It came after Hamilton had taken over from Sijthoff in the fi rst race down in 16th place, and worked his way up to sixth by the end. “It has taken us four races but we have now shown that we are podium contenders,” said Hamilton. “Hopefully all our bad luck is now out of the way. “I know we both have more time in us and the car can give us a little bit too, so after Le Mans I will be focussing on how to continue getting results and hopefully getting a win before too long.”

TRILBYS

Hamilton’s attention now turns to Le Mans, where the second day of qualifying takes place today after today’s fi rst times were set. Hamilton added: “I’m looking forward to getting back in the Ferrari, but most of all to getting back out on the Le Mans circuit. “I completely understand my grandfathers addiction and I hope that doing my best is enough to get our team onto the podium at Le Mans too. “Sixty-one years ago he took an overall win, so if I can get a class podium or win then it’s a good next step to emulating his achievement.” The 24-hour race starts at 3pm local time on Saturday. • Archie Hamilton turns his attention to Le Mans after a podium at Portimao
