Corrosion blamed for collapse of rail signal A REPORT into why a signal post collapsed onto the train track at Newbury and was subsequently struck by a train at 110mph has said that the outcome “could have been much more serious”. Corrosion at its base has been blamed as the reason why the post fell on to the line on November 17 last year by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB)’s report. The post completely blocked one track and partially obstructed another, on which the train that hit it was travelling. No-one was hurt and the train did not derail, with the front carriage only suffering some exterior damage. The report said: “The outcome could have been much more serious if the fi rst train to encounter the signal had been travelling at speed on the line that the signal had completely obstructed. “The signal collapsed because

the base of the post had corroded through, causing an almost complete loss of wall thickness at and just above ground level. “Examinations of this signal did not detect the problem because the main area of corrosion was hidden by ballast, and the examinations regime was vulnerable to missing such defects.” On June 12, 2014, the signal had been passed as “satisfactory” in its annual examination by Network Rail’s signalling and telecommunications section. The RAIB has made four recommendations to Network Rail which cover the management, examination and resilience of signal structures to such failures. A statement from Network Rail

Both were taken to Great Western Hospital in Swindon, where they were treated and later discharged and are now recovering at home. One of the men arrested, who was aged 45 and from Andover, has been charged with two counts of assault with intent to resist arrest, and one count of criminal damage to property valued under £5,000. He appeared at Reading Crown Court on Monday. The other man, aged 50 and also from Andover, has been bailed until October 19.

Plans for visitor centre at ex-air base approved PLANS to turn the control tower at Greenham Common into a tourist attraction were unanimously approved last week, despite West Berkshire Council officers recommending it for refusal. Last Wednesday, the council’s western area planning committee chose to support the proposal for a visitor centre, despite concerns having been raised about its impact on nesting birds. But councillors were satisfied with the plans submitted by Greenham Parish Council, although a number of conditions relating to environmental issues were stipulated. Parish councillor Julian SwiftHook said: “I’m pleased that common sense prevailed in the end, but it’s not the end of the story because the decision that

By Adam Flinn adam@observergroup.co.uk

was made by the committee still leaves the mitigation to be sorted out. “Renovation work has been going since last summer and it’s well on the way to being fi nished, and as soon as that’s fi nished we will be looking to invite interested parties to provide services in the building.â€? Cllr Swift-Hook added that they were looking to have the visitor centre open by spring next year, but did not want to give a defi nitive date. The plans will see the control tower converted into a cafĂŠ and exhibition rooms detailing the history of the common and its

time as an air base. But the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT), which objected to the plans, was disappointed with the approval. The charity was looking for West Berkshire Council to defer a decision until concerns about the scheme’s impact on wildlife were resolved. In a statement, BBOWT said: “Both Greenham Parish Council and West Berkshire Council are aware of the sensitivities of Greenham and Crookham commons nature reserve as a special heathland site for wildlife. “Parts of the nature reserve are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of the heathland habitats for rare and unusual birds, reptiles, insects and mammals.

A planning weekend was held in July when residents had the chance to voice their views. As part of this, representatives

of Newbury Quakers raised concern that the development might lead to the loss of their Highfield Avenue meeting house. However, a commitment has now been made by the developers to retain the building. David Walters, development director at Grainger, said: “We

are very pleased with the way in which the community’s involvement shaped the proposals at the community weekend. “Part of our vision has been about retaining the ‘Newburyness’ whilst future-proofi ng for new investment in the town in years to come.

“Our commitment to retain the Quakers’ meeting house is one example, as well as future-proofing new connections east and west and to the Kennet Centre. The planning application is expected to be submitted to West Berkshire Council by the end of the year, with a second commu-

A NEWBURY resident has criticised the town council for failing to reveal how much it had spent on legal action against developer Costain over alleged damage to Victoria Park. Allan Mercado, of Lower Raymond’s, raised the question at a full council meeting last Monday. But Mr Mercado said it was not answered and he labelled the council as “secretive. His question related to the council’s ongoing action against Costain, in which it claims the developer’s work at Parkway had led to subsidence at nearby Victoria Park. Mr Mercado said: “I objected very strongly to this shoddy reply, which showed scant respect for an important and vital question submitted by a member of the public. “Thousands of pounds of public money paid out. No information as to why. And Victoria Park’s bowling green, football pitch and tennis courts remain derelict. A public disgrace. Anthony Pick, the council’s deputy leader, said: “We have been repeatedly and fi rmly advised by our legal advisers that it would prejudice our case if we were to release any details whatsoever of it into the public domain. He added: “This situation is as frustrating to us as it is to Mr Mercado. When agreement is reached, we shall be happy to answer questions.

Headteacher to face trial on child sex allegations A CHIEVELEY headteacher who has pleaded not guilty to four counts of sexual offences against girls aged under 13 will now stand trial in February. Christopher Field, 46, of Green Lane, appeared at Oxford Crown Court on Monday in connection with three charges of assault on a girl under 13 by touching and one of inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity. He wore a suit and spoke only to confi rm his name during the hearing. The offences are alleged to have taken place while Field was working as the headteacher of Woodcote Primary School in Oxfordshire between 2010 and 2012. He had already pleaded not guilty to all four counts at a previous hearing at the same court in July. A trial date had previously been set for January 18 next year, but this was pushed back to February 22 at Monday’s hearing due to court availability, with an estimated length of 10 days. Judge Zoe Smith said there was likely to be “quite a lot of witnesses” for the case. A pre-trial review has been scheduled for January 18. Field has been released on bail until the trial.

Town centre hotel plans turned down PREMIER Inn’s plans to build a five-storey hotel in Newbury town centre have been put on hold after West Berkshire Council refused the application last Wednesday. The hotel chain, in collaboration with developer Rotterdam Properties, had wanted to build the 110- bedroom block adjacent to the bstFitness health club in Parkway. But councillors on the western area planning committee followed their officers’ recommendations to reject the proposal due to the “substantial harm” it would cause residents in Clarendon Gardens and Park End. Paul Bryant, chairman of the committee, said: “The principle issue is the loss of sunlight on the houses which are behind it to the north and north-east. “The idea of having a hotel there is acceptable, but it is the design which is the problem, the bulk of it and how it is positioned. “They will have to lose some of the building I expect. Whether that will still be viable from the point of view of the number of bedrooms they would have to lose, I don’t know.” Four objections were made to the plans by the public, including the loss of light around the site, the potential for overlook-

ing, and a lack of on-site parking. The council officers had said in the pre-meeting report that the application would “be benefi-

cial to the local town economy”, and there would have been an improvement to the street. They added that the public good would normally override the problems caused, but in this case the harm “is considered too severe to ignore”. John Bates, head of acquisi-

tions (south) for Premier Inn, said: “Following West Berkshire Council’s decision, we are working with the developer to agree our next steps.” It is not yet known whether Premier Inn will appeal the decision, alter and resubmit the plans, or pull out altogether.

News Bites Builder chosen NEWBURY: Kier Construction has been chosen by West Berkshire Council to build a new primary school on land at Newbury College. The school, which will be known as Highwood Copse, is expected to open in September 2017 and meet the high demand for primary places in Newbury. Kier will also be building a new school in Theale, which is due to open the same month. Dominic Boeck, the council’s executive member for education, said: “These two exciting projects will greatly enhance the education of local children well into the future. “We will be holding public events at which evolving illustrative material will be exhibited so that the local people can comment and meet individuals involved in the project delivery.” Newbury College and Theale C of E Primary School will be sponsoring the new school in Newbury.

Break-ins spree

NEWBURY: A number of breakins were reported across Newbury between September 24 and 26. The offences took place in Rupert Road, Elizabeth Avenue, Hill Close, Enborne Grove and Arthur Road. Garages and cars were targeted, with items stolen from them including fishing equipment, power tools, a sat-nav, a pocket radio and sunglasses. Anyone with information about the offences is asked to contact police on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Three cheers for local champions of customer care Customer service scaled even greater heights at MercedesBenz of Newbury when it played host to finalists from next month’s West Berkshire Business Awards (WBBA). The London Road Retailer is sponsoring the MercedesBenz of Newbury Customer Care Award and welcomed representatives from the trio of companies competing for the title which will be announced at an awards dinner, which takes place at Newbury Racecourse on Friday 16th October. Dozens of local firms entered the category with the Vici Language Company, We Love Pets and Nolan Osteopathy going head-to-head for the award after being chosen from a shortlist of six organisations. Formed in 2008, the Vici Language Company teaches 12 modern languages to a client base of more than 220 people ranging from those wanting to learn for their own personal development or as a pastime to owners of properties overseas and foreign nationals who have moved to the Newbury area to work. It also runs an online language platform which is utilised by clients living as far afield as France and Spain. “Customer service is something that we take very seriously from the moment that an enquiry is received,” said Managing Director Nathalie Danon-Kerr. “Being so focused on our students and the day-to-day running of the business, it is amazing to receive this outside recognition that we are doing a fantastic job in the way that we look after our clients.” Having started as a dog-walking service in Hungerford in 2007, We Love Pets really is literally taking the lead when it comes to customer care. According to Julie Turner, who founded the business with her sister Joanne Tomlinson, it has been paramount in the company’s success that now sees it operating eight franchises, offering a wider range of services

up Award. After launching just over a year ago, Nolan Osteopathy has seen rapid growth across its two practices in Henley and Midgham, with Maria’s husband, Fergus, recently coming on board to help manage this growth and further expansion could soon follow. “We have set out to look after our clients as we would want to be looked after ourselves and to do the simple things really well so services such as sending text reminders to confirm upcoming appointments, providing copies of exercise plans for people to follow, following up after appointments to monitor progress and even offering card payment facilities have all been well received,” said Maria. “As a relatively new company, we are delighted to have been selected as one of the finalists for the customer care award and it will be an incredible honour to win.” VË jwÍËÍ ËÁ ~ Í^ËÄÍ? a ~]Ë jÁWjajÄ j ãË wË!jÝMÖÁß¾ÄËË 8jÄ jßË jË? aË jÄÄ W?Ë. After successfully coming through the application stage, the three companies progressed to the final after being interviewed by Wesley Cole, Mercedes-Benz of Newbury’s Head of Business, and his colleague, Jessica Smith, who is undertaking an apprenticeship in customer service with the Retailer. “Customer service is something that we are very passionate about as a business and the same was evident with each of the three finalists,” added Wesley. “All have demonstrated their commitment to putting their customers first and a culture and proactivity to delivering the highest standards of customer care. “Each of these companies is deserving of being in the final three for the Mercedes-Benz of Newbury Customer Care Award and it will be a very tough decision indeed to choose the overall winner.”

Search begins for the golden theatre ticket THE Corn Exchange in Newbury has launched its Golden Ticket Appeal for this year, to raise money for community projects and activities supporting disadvantaged people. Theatre-goers will attempt to guess which seat in the auditorium is hiding the golden ticket. One lucky winner will then receive two tickets to every show held at the Market Place venue for the whole of 2016. Money raised will go towards activities at the Corn Exchange like the Memory Café, which provides support for people living with dementia and their carers, and the ManMade boys dance project. Fred Fortmuller, 75, of Lipscombe Close in Newbury, won last year’s competition. He said: “I’ve been coming to the Corn Exchange for many years and really enjoy their many shows. “They do a fantastic job and I was delighted when the Golden Ticket Appeal came up so that I could give my support to the Corn Exchange, which in turn helps the whole community, both young and old.” Guesses cost £25. The winner is to be announced at the fi nal performance of this year’s pantomime Dick Whittington on January 3.

Work officially starts on Ikea’s West Berks store

CONSTRUCTION on Ikea’s new store in West Berkshire was officially launched last Thursday, with an opening date set for next summer. Ikea staff, West Berkshire Council leader Gordon Lundie and council vice-chairman Quentin Webb marked the start of building work proper with a steel and spade ceremony at the site in Pincents Lane, Calcot. Work began in August on the 32,000sqm store, with the steel frame of the building having so far been built. Ikea is also spending around

£4million on changes to the roundabout on the A4 Bath Road where it joins Pincents Lane, which itself will be widened. Store manager Johanna Heuren said: “It’s really exciting and of course it comes even more to life with the kick off of the whole construction. “Ikea has invested £4m to improve the roads, and so far what I’ve heard from the com-

munity is they can already see some positive impacts from it.” The outside of the building is expected to be fi nished by the end of the year. Initial plans approved in 2012 would have seen a three-storey store built, but this was amended in July to two storeys. Johanna added: “We chose to have a two floor store and the shopping experience and area for the customer will be exactly the same. “It’s we who have gotten a lot smarter and better on how to operate the store.”

The store, which will be the 19th to open in the UK since 1987 and the fi rst for seven years, will bring 350 jobs in sales, interior design, logistics and within the restaurant to the area. Cllr Lundie said: “I am pleased to welcome Ikea to the area and look forward to the store opening next year. “Ikea has an impressive commitment to their co-workers and to working with the communities it operates within. “I look forward to working in partnership to ensure Ikea has a positive impact in Berkshire.”

Tracey and Oakley resume canal trek By Adam Flinn adam@observergroup.co.uk

FOLLOWING a two and a half month hiatus, a partiallysighted woman and her guide dog will resume their quest to walk 70 miles along the Kennet and Avon Canal from Kintbury on Saturday. Tracey Clarke, 49, who only has pinhole vision in her right eye and no sight at all in her left, set out in July to walk from Bath to Reading with her Labrador Oakley to raise £5,000 for The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. Husband Tim was following alongside in their canal boat, on which they live. But as the trio reached Hungerford, Tim’s dad Raymond suffered a fall at home and passed away, meaning the walk was put on hold at Kintbury. Now they are looking to resume where they left off and fi nish the fi nal 24 miles to Reading by next weekend. A relaunch event is being held at The Blue Ball pub in Kintbury on Saturday, with another event planned at The Bacon Arms in Newbury the following day. “We’re resuming the walk and going to Reading, which we’re

going to do within the space of Guide Dogs Week from October 3 to 11,” said Tracey. “Once we got to Kintbury, we had already raised the £5,000 to sponsor a puppy and we’ve named it after Tim’s dad, so we’re now aiming to raise another £2,500 at least.” They chose The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association to fundraise for after Tracey began to lose her sight in 2011. She had been born with no functional vision in her left eye, but didn’t have any problems with the right eye. She had a career in pharmacy

and was a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists. “In 2011 I started to realise I was missing things that were coming from my right until they were right in front of me,” Tracey added. “At that stage my eye had shut down to around half and half vision. “And then over the course of a further six months it shut down to just a tiny pinhole in the middle.” Tracey paid tribute to her dog Oakley, describing him as a “life changer”. She continued: “Without him I

News Bites Council surgery THATCHAM: Two Thatcham councillors will be in the town centre on Saturday morning to discuss any local matters of concern with residents. Marigold Jaques, West Berkshire Council representative for Thatcham Central, and Mike Cole, town councillor for North Thatcham, will be at the Broadway Green from 10am. It is part of a monthly series of council surgeries that are held in the town.

Festive lights talk THATCHAM: Plans for this year’s Christmas lights in the town centre will be discussed by Thatcham Town Council this evening. The Christmas illuminations sub-committee is set to decide whether there will be a theme for this year’s lights. Councillors will also hear of a proposal from Heartstart Thatcham for the grotto. The meeting starts at 7pm at the council’s offices in Brownsfield Road.

Hoax 999 calls THATCHAM: A 15-year-old boy from Thatcham has been arrested on suspicion of making 60 fake 999 calls to the police, ambulance service and fire service over the past year. He was arrested on September 20 after an investigation into false reports of fires, fights, burglaries and medical incidents between August 23, 2014 and September 14 this year. The boy has been released on bail until October 1.

Ceremony to honour Thatcham VC heroes

Plaque for village’s war dead

By Adam Flinn adam@observergroup.co.uk

CROWDS gathered in Thatcham on Monday evening to commemorate three heroic soldiers from the town who were awarded the Victoria Cross over the last 115 years. Three stones were unveiled in The Broadway in honour of Second Lieutenant Alexander Buller Turner, his brother Major Victor Buller Turner, and Private William House. Representatives from the Thatcham branch of the Royal British Legion, the Royal School of Military Survey and Rifles Brigade all took part in Monday’s ceremony, organised by Thatcham Town Council. Mayor of Thatcham Sheila Ellison said: “There was a very good turnout, both from the military and from the residents, so I think it went very well. “I’m very proud that the village, because it wasn’t a town then, could produce three men of unquestioning courage.” She added: “They didn’t do a risk assessment to decide whether or not they should do it, they did it, and I think Thatcham should be very proud.”

• The stones being unveiled (picture by Thatcham Photographic Club) The ceremony came on the 100th anniversary of Second Lieutenant Turner’s act of bravery in the Battle of Loos during the First World War, which earned him the Victoria Cross. At ‘Fosse 8’ near Vermelles in France on September 28, 1915, Second Lieutenant Turner volunteered to lead a new bombing attack, allowing the reserves to advance with little loss and saving the lives of hundreds of men. He died from his wounds three days later. His brother Major Turner was honoured for gallantry during

the Second World War, where he and his battalion fought off 90 German tanks on October 27, 1942. And Private House was awarded his Victoria Cross for rushing to his wounded sergeant’s aid on August 2, 1900, during the Boer War, with Private House being badly shot himself as a result. The two stones for Major Turner and Private House were commissioned by Thatcham Town Council, while government funding paid for Second Lieutenant Turner’s stone.

RESIDENTS and schoolchildren in Aldermaston came together last Friday to commemorate the 44 men from the village who lost their lives in the First World War. The ceremony at St Mary’s Church was staged on what was the 100th anniversary of the fi rst day of the Battle of Loos, in which six men from Aldermaston were killed. The villagers and children from Aldermaston Primary School were present for the unveiling of a plaque – commissioned by the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) – which lists all 44 men.

Historian David Whithorn, who works for AWE, said: “The day was very special because we remembered the men from this village that lost their lives in a way that brought this period to life for the children of Aldermaston. Now, hopefully ,they will never be forgotten.” Research has shown that a significant proportion of Aldermaston men joined the 8th Royal Berkshire regiment at the outbreak of the war in 1914. They were sent to France in August 1915, where they attacked the enemy at Loos and captured three lines of trenches before being forced back. • The plaque that was unveiled at St Mary’s Church last Friday

Traders to get “stronger voice from BID proposal BASINGSTOKE leaders are urging businesses to follow the example set by other towns by forming a Business Improvement District (BID) in the town centre. The move would see traders take control organising projects and events to improve Top of Town using funds generated through a levy charge on business owners. She said: “I don’t know how many festivals and events took place in Winchester last year, but there were a lot. “That’s all down to the BID, and we want to follow that example. Cllr Reid added: “This would

Town centre businesses are set to vote on whether to adopt the BID, called the Basingstoke Together scheme, in November. It could become operational from next April if given the go ahead. Council leader Clive Sanders give the people a stronger voice said: “The important thing to in what is needed to improve their emphasise is that it’s not our decitown, and they need to grasp this sion, and it will be put together by traders themselves. great opportunity.

“If approved, this will only be successful if they get their act together and run it properly. “We whole heartedly support the BID and believe it will enhance the area.â€? Cllr Sanders added: “When you look at all the major towns, they all have them, with some more successful than others. “But there’s enough examples of people getting behind similar projects for this to work.â€? • Borough council leader Clive Sanders has supported the creation of a Business Improvement District (BID) in the town centre

The money will help people install central heating systems, and will be made available by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) as part of the Central Heating Fund (CHF). The move will aim to help fuel homes that have no central heating and reduce their energy bills, with DECC claiming that the initiative could help households in Hampshire save up to ÂŁ1,000 a year.

Sudoku The objective is to fill a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 sub-grids that compose the grid (also called “boxes”, “blocks”, “regions”, or “sub-squares”) contains all of the digits from 1 to 9. The puzzle setter provides a partially completed grid, which for a well-posed puzzle has a unique solution.

Releasing the tension

Changes in the look and feel of your skin during cold, winter months are not abnormal, but you can counteract unpleasant irritation. Don’t Miss This! What are the signs? The tell-tale symptoms of dry skin are easy to spot: Skin just generally feels drier and tighter. Other signs may include roughness, itching, severe redness, flaking and scaling. Sometimes pores become less visible or skin may look dull. In severe cases, skin may crack and bleed, especially on the hands and fingertips.

Why does it happen? Sun exposure or cold, dry air can cause skin to become dehydrated. Dry skin is more common in the winter because the air contains less humidity. It can also be genetic or hereditary, or a natural effect of aging.

What are your options? VĂ‹Over-the-counter lotions, such as Eucerin and CurĂŠl, can relieve dryness and flaking. Or try a body cream that contains oil to help seal in moisture. Look for fragrance-free products with alpha hydroxy acids, which gently exfoliate to allow more water and moisture into the skin. VĂ‹ ĂœÂ?‰aĂ‹?™Ă?‰M?WĂ?jà ‰?Â?Ă‹?™aĂ‹ajÂ?aÂ?Ă ?™Ă?Ă‹Ă„Â??ÂŹĂ„^Ă‹Ă?†‰W†ËW?™ËMjˆ?à ĆË?™aĂ‹ drying. Instead, use a gentle cleanser, such as Dove or Aveeno, or a mild shower gel with added moisturizers. VĂ‹ Â?™žĂ?Ă‹Ă??Â?jĂ‹jĂžĂ?Ă j”jÂ?Ă&#x;ˆÂ?Ă?Ă‹M?Ă?†Ä^Ă‹Â?à ËĆÂ?Ă?jĂ Ă‹Â?Ă Ă‹Ă„Â??Â?ˉ™ËĂ?†jĂ‹Ă?Ă–MĂ‹wÂ?Ă Ă‹ more than 10 minutes. Doing so breaks down your skin’s natural protective oils, which keep it soft and smooth. VĂ‹2Ă„jĂ‹?ˆ֔‰a‰w‰jĂ Ă‹aÖà ‰™~Ă‹Ă?†jĂ‹Ă?‰™Ă?jà ¹Ë j™Ă?Ă ?Â?ˆj?Ă?‰™~Ă‹?™aĂ‹Ă„ÂŹ?WjĂ‹ heaters can dry out the air in your home. VĂ‹ †Â?Â?Ă„j˙?Ă?Ă–Ă ?Â?^Ă‹MĂ j?Ă?†?MÂ?jĂ‹w?Mà ‰WĂ„^Ă‹Ă„Ă–W†Ë?Ă„Ă‹WÂ?Ă?Ă?Â?™Ë?™aËĉÂ?Â?^Ă‹wÂ?Ă Ă‹ your bedding and innermost layer of clothing. VĂ‹ à ‰™Â?Ă‹ÂŹÂ?j™Ă?Ă&#x;Ă‹Â?wĂ‹Ă??Ă?jĂ Ă‹?™aĂ‹Â?Ă?†jĂ Ă‹Â?‰œÖ‰aĂ„Ă‹Ă?Â?Ă‹Â?jjÂŹĂ‹Ă„Â?‰™Ë†Ă&#x;aĂ ?Ă?jaĂ‹wĂ Â?”Ë the inside out. Omega-3s (essential fatty acids found in foods such as salmon, walnuts, flaxseed, soybeans and broccoli) can also help keep skin supple.

YOUR SKIN - ‘WE’ CARE! NEW JAN MARINI SKINCARE RANGE NOW AVAILABLE

When should you worry? See a dermatologist if dryness and itching keep you awake at night, if OTC lotions aren’t working, if you have open sores or large areas of scaling or peeling skin, or if you develop an infection from scratching. You could have a more serious condition such as eczema, psoriasis or another skin disorder.

Did you know? V Although everyone’s skin changes with age, a man’s skin tends to

stay moist longer. That’s because a woman’s skin becomes much drier after menopause. PEOPLE WITH a wide variety of conditions, ranging from insomnia, tendinitis, asthma to high blood pressure can all receive relief from therapeutic massage. It can help us feel less stressed, boost our immune systems and increase our mental alertness. Studies have shown that massage reduces heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases blood circulation and the flow of lymph, relaxes muscles, improves range of motion and increases the body’s natural painkillers. The most immediate and most noticeable response to massage is relaxation. Not only does it feel wonderful but it also serves an important purpose: when your body relaxes, the functions that heal and restore it are allowed to take place. Make massage a habit As with exercise, massage has the greatest benefit when you receive it regularly. The more “practise you give your body’s systems at functioning in a stress-free and efficient manner, the more “skilled it becomes at functioning optimally under challenging circumstances. Whether weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, a programme of regular massage will help your body maintain its overall health. Stress Massage is one of the best antidotes for stress, giving you more energy, improving your outlook on life, and reducing your likelihood of injury and illness. Massage can also relieve symptoms of conditions that are aggravated by anxiety, such as asthma or insomnia. Painful or tight muscles Massage can relieve many types of muscle tightness, from short-term cramps to habitual tight shoulders. Some techniques release tension directly by stretching, kneading, and compressing your muscles. Others work indirectly by affecting your nervous system to allow your muscles to relax. Folk trio’s Newbury debut MUSICAL ensemble Faustus will make their bow at the New Greenham Arts Auditorium in Newbury next Thursday as part of their UK tour. The threesome consists of Saul Rose, a former member of folk group Waterson:Carthy, and Paul Sartin

By James Richings

“We try to get the audience involved as early on as possible, and break down and Benji Kirkpatrick, best known as the barrier between ‘us’ and ‘them’”, Bellowhead band members. Paul told the Observer. After meeting through mutual “That’s one of the strengths of folk friends in the mid-2000s, Paul formed music and in particular chorus songs the group in 2006 after a quartet he – if they appreciate the gig, we feel was in disbanded. we’ve achieved that aim and that it’s

a job well done. “Our repertoire consists of mainly traditional English folk music. Songs about love gone wrong, grisly murder ballads, saucy sea shanties, dark humour, and some jolly tunes.” In the last nine years the group have released two albums, with their latest, ‘Broken Down Gentleman’, out in spring 2013. The three friends are on their UK tour, visiting cities such as Liverpool, Exeter and Cardiff. Each member of the group is involved in various side projects, making their commitment with Faustus somewhat sporadic. But with Bellowhead breaking up next April, Faustus could step into the spotlight. The trio are working on their third album. And with Benji on the guitar and bouzouki, Saul on the melodeon, Paul on the fiddle and oboe, and all of them singing, they promise a night to remember on October 8. Paul added: “I’ve played there with another ensemble but it’s a fi rst for Faustus – and I’m looking forward to introducing the band to the venue and to the New Greenham Tandoori next door!” Tickets cost £13 and the gig starts at 8pm at the venue in Lindenmuth Way.

Representing James Acaster

THE 2015 blockbuster ‘Everest’ will be shown at the Corn Exchange in Newbury from Friday, October 2, to Thursday, October 8. Starring Jason Clarke, Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin and Keira Knightly, the movie looks at the events of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster. Tickets for the showing cost from £4.40 to £8.

By James Richings which paved the way for tours with comedians Josie Long and Milton Jones, and appearances on TV shows including ‘8 out of 10 Cats’ and ‘Mock the Week’. “The audience on the night will see a gangly Kettering boy doing whimsical stand up about his time on jury duty, which is also a fable,” he said. “And, when I perform, I like it when the audience appreciate my jokes. “Sometimes this does not happen and on those nights people can get a little bit cross.” Arguably a slightly odd choice for a gangly Kettering comedian, but James’ comic inspiration is defi nitely different: “The Rock,” he resolutely decided. “The wrestler. Dwayne Johnson was a big inspiration for me. He was one of the greatest comedy creations ever. He took himself so seriously all the time even though he was a doofus.” Suitable for over 15s, the show starts at 8pm and costs £12.

Without Stars A DANCE show focused on love, loss and friendship will be at the Corn Exchange tomorrow night, October 1. ‘Without Stars and There We Have Been’ was choreographed by James Cousins. It is inspired by the dark novel ‘Norwegian Wood’, which was written by the Japanese author Haruki Murakami. The show starts at 7.45pm, with tickets costing from £8 to £15.

KNOWN for his whimsical demeanour on stage, comedian James Acaster is bringing his ‘Represent’ tour to the Corn Exchange in Newbury on Friday, October 2. The 30-year-old started his comedy career seven years ago forging his way in the field, and as a regular at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. But it could have been a whole other story; he revealed his second choice career path if comedy hadn’t come calling. “Probably a thief - a professional thief,” James joked. “I like the thought of robbing people and creeping round in the dark. I could go on the lamb if I got caught. It’s all very appealing.” After deciding instead to make people laugh for a living in January 2008, James performed at various comedy clubs and then his fi rst Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2009, with a show alongside fellow comedians Nick Helm and Josh Widdicombe. Its success made him a hot topic,

Trevaskis on form in Blues’ win over Grove Big defeat for Thatcham RFC IT was a tough weekend for Thatcham RFC, as they were convincingly beaten away at Buckingham 43-19 on Saturday afternoon. Buckingham scored fi rst with a converted try, but Thatcham got their own 10 minutes later through Liam Rowland and converted by fly half Matt Billinghurst. But a storming run from Buckingham saw them earn a further four tries before the break, leaving the score at 31-7 going into half-time. The second half went better for the visitors, as they and Buckingham shared 12 points apiece over the 40 minutes. Buckingham started the second period how they left off in the fi rst with another converted try, and fi nished their scoring five minutes later as the hosts went over again. But Thatcham fought back as Jamie Evans made a break down the flank and passed to Marty Butler, who got to the ground under the posts, with Billinghurst again converting. And George Seymour added five more points to Thatcham’s tally in the dying moments, although it wasn’t enough to avoid a heavy defeat. The result leaves Thatcham 10th in the Southern Counties North standings with three points and without a win. Their next game is at home to Drifters on October 10.

RYAN Trevaskis was the man of the hour for Newbury Blues RFC as he scored all of his team’s points in their 16-10 home win against Grove on Saturday. Newbury kept their unbeaten start to the South West 1 East season going with the win, although it was the narrowest result so far.

By Adam Flinn adam@observergroup.co.uk

The match began with both sides pushing forward, with the Blues winning an early penalty that just sailed the wrong side of the posts. Further penalties came to

• Newbury Blues put in another strong performance on Saturday

the Blues and Grove which were all kicked to touch, until the hosts fi nally got some points on the board on 20 minutes as Trevaskis slotted his penalty home. Grove immediately put the Blues under pressure at the restart and kicked to touch, but lost the resulting line-out and over the next few minutes

neither side were able to break through the opposition. On 38 minutes Jamie Futcher was able to get over the try line for the Blues, but was held up by a good Grove defence and the hosts got a 5m scrum. Steve Denner then fed the ball to Iain Herriott, who dodged the tackles before passing to Trevaskis who touched down on the left for their only try of the match, as well as kicking the extras. The score was 10-0 at the break, and Newbury added to their total in the opening 10 minutes of the second half with Trevaskis converting a penalty. Grove fi nally got on the scoresheet on 58 minutes with a converted try, but Trevaskis soon stepped up one more time with another penalty three minutes later, and another three points. And on 68 minutes Grove converted their fi rst penalty to move within six points of the Blues, but the hosts were safe and held on for their fourth win out of four. Newbury are second in the league table with 17 points, two points behind Swindon and two ahead of third-placed Towcestrians. Their next match is away to Salisbury on October 10.

Knockout cup joy for West Berks WEST Berks Golf Club won the Central Sevens Golf League knockout cup on Saturday, with a thrilling 2-1 victory against Feldon Valley at Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire. All three games were close, but it was in the third match where Tim Howes clinched the title after holing a birdie putt on the 18th hole. Elsewhere, Joshua March won the Saturday stableford with 40 points, with Ian Miles and Gary Waterston second and third on 37 and 36 points respectively. Sport Bites England call-up RUGBY: Newbury Ladies RFC vice captain Jeannie Ivanov has been selected for the England Touch Squad for next year’s European Touch Rugby Championships. Ivanov will feature in the Senior Mixed England Training Squad for the championships, which take place on August 8 and 9 next year in Jersey. As well as Newbury Ladies, Ivanov also plays for the Thatcham Red Sox and West of England Wildcats.

Another win FOOTBALL: Newbury FC earned their fourth win in succession on Saturday, as they beat Woodley United Reserves 4-1. Conor Lynch scored a hattrick and Liam Benham grabbed one to give Newbury a wellearned victory. The result sees them jump to second in the Thames Valley Premier League, two points behind current leaders Reading YMCA. And it is Reading that Newbury play in their next match on Saturday, which would see the West Berkshire side go top if they win.

Ladies thrashed FOOTBALL: It was a bad day at the office for Newbury Ladies FC on Sunday, after they were thrashed 8-1 by Milton Keynes City Ladies. The result was their worst of the season, and puts them sixth in the Southern Region Women’s Football League standings with three points from three games. They will be hoping for a better result in their next match at home to Banbury United Ladies on Sunday.

Tough defeat RUGBY: Despite a solid performance, Newbury Ladies RFC were unable to overcome Reading Ladies as they lost 24-10 at home. Reading were 12-5 up at the break and pulled away in the second half, although Emma Horner was able to earn a consolation try in the final moments of the match. Newbury are third in the Women’s South East West 1 standings with eight points, one behind leaders Crowthorne Ladies. They next play Gloucestershire side Chipping Sodbury on Sunday.

THATCHAM SEAL WIN IN DYING MOMENTS AN INJURY time winner gave Thatcham Town their seventh win of the season on Saturday, after beating fellow high-fliers Ascot United 2-1. Following on from last Tuesday’s goalless draw with Brimscombe and Thrupp, Thatcham returned to winning ways in some style at Waterside Park at the weekend. It was a weakened Ascot side that made the trip to West Berkshire, with eight of their players injured or unavailable and manager Jeff Lamb naming himself on the bench. Thatcham started the match strongest with the lion’s share of possession, although it didn’t equate to any clear chances in the opening 15 minutes. However they fi nally broke through on 26 minutes when defender Gareth Thomas poked

home a fl ick-on following a long throw-in. Callum Willmoth almost added a second 10 minutes later when he was unmarked in the penalty area, but mis-controlled the ball and failed to make the most of the opportunity. Willmoth had another attempt just before the break, with Ascot ‘keeper Chris Grace keeping the ball out with a fi ngertip save. Another chance came and went for the Kingfishers early in the second half as Mark Thompson shot high and wide. Ascot then had their fi rst meaningful effort as Lee Boon’s deflected shot was saved at the second attempt by Thatcham

‘keeper Chris Rackley. The equaliser came on 80 minutes as Joe Grant muscled the ball in, shortly after Tristram Dennis had knocked Daryl McLean’s cross onto the bar. But Thatcham were able to snatch the win in the 92nd minute as Josh Helmore slammed home via the underside of the bar, in what could prove to be an important result against a top-four team. The result moved Thatcham up to third in the Hellenic League Premier division with 22 points, with games in hand over both Flackwell Heath and Oxford City Nomads above them.
