Grandad’s wooden cast will help with research By George Welch A GRANDFATHER who wore an environmentally friendly wooden cast as part of an NHS study after breaking his wrist has urged others to participate in research to help ‘move things on’. Charles Bee, from Charlbury, took part in a study comparing two casts after falling off a chair and breaking his wrist in September last year. The 72-year-old was one of the fi rst John Radcliffe Hospital patients to wear an eco-friendly wooden cast instead of the traditional rigid and non-biodegradable fibreglass cast. NHS researchers believe the Woodcast, which can be removed and remoulded when heated up, has patient comfort and environmental cost benefits. Charles, a grandfather-of-five, was standing on a chair and attempting to put out an oil lamp in his west Oxfordshire home when he fell and broke his wrist. He said: “I fell off a chair which I shouldn’t have been standing on in the fi rst place. One or two people told me I must have been inebriated, but I just fell off the chair, end of story.” Charles visited his GP and A&E at

Patients completed weekly online questionnaires until cast removal and again three months after injury to see how well they recover. Charles said he benefited from having the wooden cast, as the study team were able to split it along the middle so it could be removed in case

of airport security checks. He visited stepson Nicholas Smith in China three weeks after his injury, followed by a trip to see his daughter Alyson Bee in Australia. Charles said: “It was quite comfortable. It solved a problem. The major help for me was it was light and I was able to remove it as I travelled.” Contact your doctor about research opportunities. ASPIRING musicians have collaborated with a college specialising in the creative industries to fi ne tune their sound. Students from the City of Oxford College visited SAE Oxford’s stateof-the-art facilities in Littlemore to record tracks for their EPs. They were able to broaden their experience by using industrystandard equipment and facilities to record in a professional setting. The sessions also contribute to their coursework. The EPs will be promoted extensively via social media and performed at a fi nal major project event at the O2 Academy in Cowley Road over two nights on May 21 and 22. Nick Reiber Hodgson, music

lecturer at City of Oxford College, said the opportunity provided students with an ‘invaluable’ experience of recording in a live lounge setting. Second year student Ollie Rodgers is a member of indie rock band Eunoia. He said: “Recording at SAE Institute in Oxford was an amazing experience. It gave a real insight into the recording processes, which ran seamlessly and without fault. “Overall, a stellar performance and opportunity from SAE with outstanding facilities and staff supplying us with a backbone for our upcoming EP for Eunoia.” SAE, which offers degrees and short courses in audio, fi lm, the music business and web development, will host an assessed gig for fi rst year music students on May 24.
