revellers both young and old. Father Christmas took to his sleigh, accompanied by town mayor Julian Swift-Hook, for a festive parade starting at about 4.30pm and going along Bartholomew Street, Northbrook Street, Park Way and around The Wharf to finish in Market Place. Once there, the mayor, with Santa standing alongside, pushed a plunger to
illuminate the town centre and officially launch Christmas in Newbury. Afterwards, Cllr Swift-Hook said: “Being chauffeured around Newbury by Santa was a wonderful experience. “I was so pleased to see that so many people turned out to welcome the Christmas season. “The streets of Newbury were lined with wellwishers waving and cheering,
it was a fantastic way to start Christmas in Newbury.” Thatcham will join in with its own Christmas lights switch-on tomorrow evening, starting from 5pm. Around 25 stalls offering games, gifts, food and drink will be available, while Santa will also make an appearance for the turning on of the lights at 7pm.
