The classic tale of Robinson Crusoe By James Richings

A SHIPWRECK, treasure hunt and the classic pantiomime dame all add up to high jinks on the high seas for Robinson Crusoe. The show which runs until Sunday, January 8 at The Theatre Chipping Norton is one of the most popular tales. “As in the original novel, Robinson is shipwrecked on a deserted island, but in our version of the story, Robinson was sailing on the “Saucy Nancy” in search of his father’s ‘hidden treasure’”, actor Craig Rhys Barlow, who plays the title character told the Guardian. “They are attacked by the Pirate Queen, Betty Babcock, before a violent storm hits. “The ship is then wrecked on an exotic island, separating Robinson from his mother (the dame in our production), Polly (his new love), the crew and his father’s treasure map. “He struggles to survive in the wilderness before meeting Friday, the last of an indigenous tribe. “But will Friday help Robinson fi nd his mum, honour his dad’s legacy, defeat

the Pirate Queen and win the girl?” The popular novel was written by Daniel Defoe and fi rst published in April 1719. It became a huge hit with bookworms around the globe with ‘Robinson Crusoe’ being regarded as one of the fi rst novels that marked the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre. It is now one of the world’s most published books, with the plot being adapted into a television show, a stage production and a fi lm. Pantomimes at The Chipping Norton Theatre are becoming incredibly popular, with last year’s show, ‘Robin Hood’ a huge success attracting families from all over the county. And Craig is confident that this year’s offering will be also be a big hit. “Pantomime has a very similar formula to the Disney movies,” he said. “They were created primarily for the enjoyment of children, but many of the jokes and plot-points work on two levels: one for the children and one for the adults. “Besides, no one is too old to be a bit silly.”
