The Isleworth Collegiate Invitational (ICI) hosted by Texas Tech University and the University of Central Florida provides college golfers the opportunity to compete on one of the toughest courses in the nation against some of the best amateur players in the game. 2009 ICI CHAMPION BUD CAULEY

Each fall, Isleworth welcomes 15 of the nation’s finest collegiate teams inside its gates for an experience rivaling that of a real major championship. The ICI combines exceptional hospitality, a challenging tournament field and one of the best conditioned courses in the world, as well as amazing tee gifts provided by Druh Belts & Buckles, Oakley and Under Armour.

2011 U.S. AMATEUR CHAMPION KELLY KRAFT

Credited as college golf’s most coveted event, the ICI has invited the most competitive field since its 2004 inception. This year’s field will once again feature 10 of the top 25 teams in the country. Isleworth welcomes back defending ICI champion Alabama Crimson Tide and Division I powerhouses Florida, Oklahoma State and Stanford. Augusta State will return to the ICI this year after winning back-to-back National Championship titles in 2010 and 2011. Along with the nation’s strongest teams comes amateur golf’s best individual talent. During their collegiate careers, current touring professionals Bud Cauley, Rickie Fowler, J.B. Holmes, Chris Kirk, Jamie Lovemark, Pablo Martin, Webb Simpson and Jhonattan Vegas all enjoyed the pleasure of playing in the ICI.

All-American 2010 U.S. Amateur Champion Official World Amateur Golf Ranking: #4

a major preview By: Jim Nugent There are college golf tournaments, and then there are college golf tournaments. And then there is the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational. Created in 2004, this 54-hole event has quickly become one of the premier collegiate golf events all year long. There are many reasons for this, but primary among them is the strength of the field, year in and year out. 2011 promises more of the same.

ion 3 mp g: # rs Cha kin ge onal Ran od itati Golf k R ds Inv ateur tric Fiel Am Pa mpia World Oly cial fi Of

Leading the way this year is Stanford University, ranked No. 3 in the land as the season began. To prove worthy of that ranking, the Cardinals won their first outing of the year, taking the Olympia Fields Invitational by a whopping eleven shots. Amazingly, they were led by a freshman, one who hadn’t even set foot on campus. Patrick Rodgers, fresh off playing for the American Walker Cup team, was medalist in the tournament, posting a 54-hole score of 4-under par to win by three shots. Also competing this year is Alabama, pre-season No. 1 in the country. Arguably one of the deepest teams in the nation, they too had a freshman, Justin Thomas, win the first tournament of the year. Thomas carded a 10-under par (206) to win the title at the Carpet Capitol Collegiate in early September.

Ca

h as te C om egia Th l Coll tin apito Jusrpet C

And if that wasn’t enough, another impact freshman will be playing at Isleworth, University of Texas’ Jordan Spieth. Also a Walker Cup team member, Spieth is ranked No. 2 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Youth will clearly be served at Isleworth this October. Finally, perennial contenders like the University of Florida, Oklahoma State University and Ohio State University are part of the 15 team field that will challenge for the title for college golf’s “Major Championship.”

meet the hostsF TEXAS TECH & UC Two of the nation’s best collegiate golf programs have come together to host the country’s premier college golf tournament. The University of Central Florida joins Texas Tech University in hosting this year’s Isleworth Collegiate Invitational at Isleworth Golf & Country Club.

RED RAIDERS GOLF PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS •

Developed by golf course architect Tom Doak and named after Texas Tech alum Jerry S. Rawls, Texas Tech’s 18-hole championship golf course is recognized as one of the top five college courses featuring 7,100 yards of undulating fairways, beautiful bent grass greens and many deep bunkers.

Texas Tech enjoys dedicated facilities for its men’s and women’s golf teams, including pitching and chipping areas and an indoor facility with three hitting bays equipped with swing analysis technology.

Texas Tech recently broke ground on a new $3.7 million clubhouse providing a full-service pro shop and locker room facilities, as well as a Jerry’s Grill. A team facility is also under development equipped with locker rooms for the men’s and women’s teams, along with offices for the coaching staff.

In its eighth year, the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational has been an important tournament for both schools, providing a stage for an array of great performances and moments that have helped shape both universities’ golf programs and establish them as top forces in college golf. Isleworth has been the site of the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational since 2004, when UCF and Tavistock Group partnered to develop a tournament designed to give collegiate players and coaches the feel of a PGA Tour event. UCF played host to the tournament for the next four years until Texas Tech became host in 2008. Recognized as one of the leading college golf competitions in the nation, the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational offers collegiate golfers the opportunity to play on one of the toughest courses in the nation against the best in the game. Each year, the three-day tournament invites 15 of the nation’s finest collegiate teams to compete for the coveted title. UCF and Texas Tech’s participation and association with the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational has helped both schools recruit a deep talent pool for their respective golf programs.

“Isleworth is an amazingly unique and prestigious place with a worldclass golf course and clubhouse amenities that are second to none. The tournament staff truly commits themselves to running the ICI like a PGA Tour event. Potential recruits want to play in the best tournament schedule possible, and we have been able to attract top-notch recruits partly because of the quality of the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational.”

Greg Sands

Men’s Golf Coach, Texas Tech University

KNIGHTS GOLF PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS •

The UCF Knights enjoy one of the top training venues in the nation within the UCF Golf Practice Facility, a 2,880-square-foot golf teaching building located at the Twin Rivers Golf Club in Oviedo.

The practice facility features hitting bays, a state-of-the-art video system to analyze player swings, a player’s lounge and locker rooms, offices for UCF coaching staff, a six-acre shortgame area and driving range.

The Rio Pinar Country Club serves as the home course for the UCF men’s golf program. First designed in 1957 by Mark Mahanna, Rio Pinar Country Club features a competitive tree-lined course providing 6,978 yards of challenging championship golf.

“The Isleworth Collegiate Invitational combines amazing hospitality and a demanding golf course to create a major championship feel. The experience gives collegiate golfers a glimpse of what life can be like if they reach the pinnacle of their chosen profession.”

Bryce Wallor Men’s Golf Coach, University of Central Florida 57

COURSE CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF

THE UNDULATING TERRAIN AND HILLS OF CENTRAL FLORIDA HAVE MADE ISLEWORTH A VERY SPECIAL GOLF COURSE. THE FEELING WE HOPE MEMBERS WILL ALL HAVE AFTER PLAYING 18 HOLES AT ISLEWORTH IS THAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO GO RIGHT BACK OUT AND PLAY ANOTHER 18 HOLES.

–ARNOLD PALMER

DID YOU KNOW?

ISLEWORTH GOLF COURSE DESIGNER

ISLEWORTH MEMBERS HAVE WON A COMBINED TOTAL OF MORE THAN 345 WORLDWIDE VICTORIES, INCLUDING 28 MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The history of Isleworth’s golf course is as storied as its original designer. When golf legend Arnold Palmer first saw Isleworth, he realized it was the ideal setting to build a championship golf course. Weaving through rolling hills, around pristine lakes and amid grand oak cypress trees, Isleworth’s picture-perfect course layout was carved into 800 undeveloped acres of citrus groves before a single home site was plotted. Palmer’s genius vision, combined with Steve Smyers’ redesign of the course almost 20 years later, have made Isleworth one of the world’s truly great courses.

The front nine at Isleworth tests the mightiest of players, rating two strokes tougher than the back nine. Holes 1 through 5 are characterized as the most difficult stretch on the course, and of the devilish first five holes, the opening hole is the only realistic birdie chance. Few have been able to play the 2nd and 3rd holes under par, and these two holes continually yield more bogeys than any others on the course. Many a golfer has seen four or five shots easily disappear on this stretch of holes.

The back nine is less menacing than the front nine in terms of difficulty but requires a little thought and effort to overcome strategic hurdles, including severe slopes and multiple-level greens. Nowhere does the course come more alive than the 11th, known for its thousands of colorful flowers and shrubs. The 14th and 15th are nearly as picturesque, with views of Lake Butler, the biggest of all the lakes in the Butler Chain. The 16th is the last real chance for a birdie before reaching the pressure-packed 17th and 18th holes, which call for both accuracy and length and present two of the most 62

challenging greens on the entire golf course.
