We are delighted to welcome you to Taunton School for the 2024 Careers Convention. We are privileged to have a wealth of experience and great variety amongst our exhibitors. I would encourage all who attend today to make the very best of the expertise on offer. No doubt it will help assist you in making informed decisions on your future after Sixth Form education. Do take the time to visit as many of the exhibitors as possible. I am grateful to all of them for attending today and hope they encounter many enthusiastic students who are curious to discover which career paths might make them most happy and fulfilled. the convention

Study the list of exhibitors before the event and decide which ones you most want to talk to. You might have several careers in mind that interest you or have no idea what you want to do; either way this event is designed to get you thinking about your future Sixth Form choices and beyond. Before the event use Unifrog to Shortlist a few careers you are interested in. Even if you know what career you want you should still look at what other professions have to offer; there are very few pupils in Year 11 who are absolutely certain about what they will be doing in five, ten or twenty years’ time. The purpose of the Convention is for you to meet a wide range of working people in order to discuss ideas which you can follow up in other ways, like using Unifrog and gaining work experience.

» Plan your visit by marking on your programme several careers that might interest you. » Choose one or two careers that you know absolutely nothing about - mark them down. » Discuss your choices with your parents - they will be able to offer helpful advice. Use this next week to explore these careers on Unifrog. You can discuss options and choice with your tutor. Check with the Careers Department which careers best suit your subject choices.

Use your time well and try to speak to all the people that you have marked as being of interest to you. If there is a queue it might be advisable to go away, talk to someone else and return later. Be ready to discuss your interests, abilities and achievements and ask for the following: » What qualifications are required for entry to the career? » What training would I receive and is any further study required? » What sort of work would I do? » What are the hours, working conditions, opportunities for career advancement / promotion etc.? » Are there any special qualities required to do the job well? Use the list of questions provided to you by the Careers Department.

Follow up any ideas or offers of work experience. If you are able to, organise a short period of work experience, or work shadowing in an area that really interests you. Use Unifrog to help make decisions about subject choices for Sixth Form. Discuss areas of interest with your tutor, the Careers Department, your parents or anyone else who might be interested in listening!
