WHO WE ARE Taunton School was founded in 1847 and is a traditional co-educational day and boarding school in South West England for students aged 0-18. The School is situated on 56 acres of land on the northern edges of the County town of Taunton, within easy access to the town centre, and close to the cities of Bristol, Exeter and Bath. We are a very inclusive, friendly, progressive and successful school where all students are afforded outstanding education and support in order that they may reach their full potential. Across all parts of the school, we have around 1200 students with approximately 450 full-time boarders and 750 day students. We are very proud of our diverse nationality mix at Taunton School, with, in general, over 50 countries represented. As a whole, the school is approximately 75% British and 25% international. For our international students, we offer a number of educational pathways, allowing for a far more flexible and tailor-made approach to learning.

TAUNTON PREP (TPS) & SENIOR SCHOOLS (TS) For those international students with high levels of English, we are able to offer places directly into our Prep School (ages 7 – 13) or Senior School (ages 13 – 18). INTERNATIONAL MIDDLE SCHOOL (TSIMS) Younger international students (ages 8 – 14) with low to intermediate levels of English, receive intensive and expert tuition in English as well as other academic subjects until they are ready to transfer to the Prep School, Senior School or Taunton School International. TAUNTON SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL (TSI) International students between 14 – 16 years old can join our prestigious one or two-year GCSE programmes, providing students with the best possible preparation for Sixth Form study. International students between 16 – 18 years old can enrol on our one- or two-year Business Foundation programme prior to applying to University in the UK or around the world.

entry points We welcome applications from all international students between the ages of 0 – 18, with boarding provision starting from 7 years old.

Students can enter via the International School route or go directly into the Prep or Senior School depending on their age, academic ability, preferred course and level of English. Students naturally transfer between the different sections of the School as they progress which allows for the best possible integration, academic success and social development. Students attending our International Schools are given preference to transfer to the Prep or Senior School following completion of their course.

Academically, we offer a wide curriculum and multiple entry points. Our class sizes are small and our teachers are highly qualified, experienced and most importantly, willing to go that extra mile. We focus on the students and getting the very best out of them. With individual support from their tutor and thorough academic tracking, we achieve outstanding examination results and develop students who are able to think and study independently.

With all of our students away from home, family and friends, we know how important it is to provide the very best in pastoral care. Boarding houses are furnished to a very high standard and our dedicated House Staff are always on hand to offer support and encouragement. GUARDIANS Taunton School sets the highest standards in safeguarding the welfare of every pupil, and therefore requires parents who do not live in the UK to appoint a guardian to act on their behalf. Arrangements for this should be made by the parents and is their responsibility. Guardians are the parents’ representatives in the UK and are essential in times of emergency. They have a pupil welfare role, bridging the gap between parents, the pupil and the school.

CO-CURRICULAR Developing well-rounded students is an important part of the school’s ethos and consequently, we offer an extensive range of co-curricular activities that will appeal to all students. Involvement in co-curricular activities develops a child’s intellectual, emotional, social, moral, creative, and physical growth and supplements what they are learning in school. When students engage fully with co-curricular activities, we see many direct benefits, such as improved academic performance, better social skills, broadening of horizons, improved wellbeing and of course, that all-important boost to University applications. At Taunton School, we have many opportunities for our students to involve themselves in co-curricular activities, whether that be through sport, our clubs, performing arts or our extensive range of other clubs and societies. Please read on for more details. With over 250 clubs, societies and sports teams, we are confident that there really is something for everyone.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY...

Costanza Azzini, Italian One Year GCSE at Taunton School International and IB at Taunton School “I got to know Taunton School thanks to a friend who had just finished the IB course there. My initial plan was to start in the Sixth Form in Taunton Senior School but the atmosphere at the International School and the possibility to improve my skills made me decide to take GCSEs first. This choice has turned out to be the right one; not only because I had a great time thanks to the many friends I made and the support from the staff, but also because I have widely improved my English and knowledge in the other subjects. This year I took the IB in Taunton School and I’m really proud of myself as I got 42 points out of a maximum of 45 (the highest score in the year). This has enabled me to secure my first choice university place and so next year, I will go to King’s College in London to study International Relationships.”

Harry Leung, Chinese One Year GCSE at Taunton School International and A-Levels at Taunton School “During my time at Taunton School, I have had an incredible journey of both academic and personal development. The cohesive and diverse environment has allowed me to form strong bonds between teachers and students from different backgrounds. It really broadened my horizons and enhanced my cultural awareness through direct exposure to different cultures. As an international boarder, this welcoming and inclusive community has treated me with warmth, making me feel at home in a foreign land. The sense of belonging amongst day students and boarders is extraordinary and is difficult to experience elsewhere. The time that we spend together messing around, playing sports, or even studying has been a treasure in my life.”

37 TA U N T O N S C H O O L - I N T E R N AT I O N A L P R O S P E C T U S

Tricey Agbolu, Ghanaian Foundation Programme at Taunton School International “Taunton School International has a multicultural environment that caters to the needs of every single person. Studying in Taunton School International has given me the opportunity to participate in different cocurricular activities such as netball, hockey, yoga and arts. However, the activity I particularly enjoyed this year was yoga. This is because, after a long day of school, doing yoga made me relax and it released any stress that I had accumulated. Overall, the one thing I’d say is that the quality of facilities at Taunton School International is astonishing. The concept of living in a boarding school does not sound appealing. However, at Taunton School International, a massive emphasis is placed on the wellbeing of students. For instance, activities such as trips are organised on the weekends to help students integrate. Being in a boarding house at Taunton School International has been one of the best decisions I have made by far. Even though I have not been able to see my family for quite some time, the support and encouragement provided by Taunton School International has been amazing.”

Artemijs Tomasovs, Latvian Year 10 at Taunton International Middle School “I wanted to come to Taunton School so that I could improve in my Maths and English. I was worried that TSI might be too hard for me, so I decided to attend Taunton International Middle School, and I am very happy I did because I am already improving with help from my teachers. I am really enjoying my time so far being in a new country. I have made lots of friends and I like being able to learn new things. I am also able to enjoy one of my favourite hobbies by attending the Football Club and making the most of Games. After my time at Taunton International Middle School, I would like to attend Taunton School or Taunton School International to continue my education. I know that the teachers will help me to choose the path that best suits me.”
