Spring Festivals 2022

BY ALLYSON JONES

After two years of rescheduled and postponed events, spring promises a rebirth of local food festivals and farmers markets, holiday parades and family fun! Celebrate this special season the Lowcountry way with a guide to some of exciting happenings taking place in March, April and May.

Hilton Head Island St. Patrick’s Day Parade Weekend

Céad míle fáilte! (A hundred thousand welcomes.)

Founded in 1983 by local businessman Tom Reilley with a few friends and family, the Hilton Head St. Patrick’s Day Parade is South Carolina’s original holiday parade and one of the Island’s most popular and well-attended annual events.

Don your green and stake out your spot among an estimated 30,000 spectators along Pope Avenue on Sunday, March 13 to catch this family-friendly community parade which kicks off at 3 p.m.

Recognized as one of the Top 20 Tourism Events in the Southeast, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade often includes a military flyover and an appearance by the Budweiser Clydesdales joining the U.S. Marine Corps Band from Parris Island, high school and university marching bands and military units, pipe and drum bands, floats, community groups, dignitaries and the antics of the Shriners.

Last year, a Boat Parade was added to the mix making it a weekend celebration of all things Irish with the second annual event floating down Broad Creek early on Saturday, March 12. The fun then moves to Celebration Park from 5-7 p.m. with the Inaugural Irish Concert featuring Boston Irish rock band The Fenian Sons, the Boston Police Gaelic Column P&D and NYPD Emerald Society P&D before heading over to Reilley’s Grill & Bar in preparation for Sunday’s parade.

For the latest updates on the Hilton Head Island St. Patrick’s Day Parade Weekend, visit their Facebook page, hiltonheadireland.org or call (855) 287-7287.

Hilton Head Wingfest

Wingfest 25 is scheduled to return (for the third time) to Shelter Cove Community Park on Saturday, March 19.

“We aren’t just ‘wingin’ it’ anymore,” declares the Wingfest website. “After 25 years, we like to think we know what we’re doing. Our keys to success? Invite the best local restaurants, add some handpicked bands, sprinkle in some kids activities, pour a little too much alcohol, and spark some semi-friendly competition.”

Hosted by the Island Rec. Center, nearly two-dozen restaurants competed for the People’s Choice and Judge’s awards in 2019, the last time Wingfest was held. Coconutz was the people’s first choice with One Hot Mama’s and Howell-Chase Heating & Air Conditioning securing second and third place, respectively. Meanwhile, the judges declared One Hot Mama’s the winner followed by Southern Barrel and Giuseppi’s. The 2019 Wing Eating Champion’s name was withheld, but Dwayne Gibbs, Isaiah Holland and Bryan Spendley are among those who have been declared winners at previous events.

Proceeds from Wingfest benefit the Hilton Head Island Recreation Association’s Carmines Family Recreation Scholarship Fund, to ensure that no child is denied recreation.

For details and Wingfest 25 tickets, call the Island Rec. Center at (843) 681-7273 or visit hiltonheadwingfest.com.

The Art Market at Historic Honey Horn

April 23-24, dozens of accomplished artists and craftspeople from around the country will once again gather on the grounds of the Coastal Discovery Museum for the 20th Annual Art Market at Historic Honey Horn.

An annual rite of spring held outside under the property’s historic live oaks, this juried fine art and craft show features a variety of work in all shapes, sizes, mediums and price points – from pottery, photography, paintings, wood and fiber arts to quilts, clay, jewelry, metalwork, mixed media and more – available for purchase from the artists themselves.

Last year, Samuel Yao of Ann Arbor, Michigan was named Best in Show with his handwoven sculptural baskets made with fallen palm tree fronds. Anne’s Feather Art & Painting from Alva, Florida placed second with wildlife images painted directly on humanely sourced feathers combined with found objects such as shells, driftwood and lures. Toni Chirico of 8 Petals in Chapin, South Carolina took home third with her uniquely crafted fused glass art.

Artist demonstrations are scheduled throughout the weekend with the popular Herb Society of Hilton Head Sale of herb plants, French Market soup mix, curries, jellies, dill horseradish mix and many new products opening at 10 a.m. on Saturday until everything sells out.

The Art Market at Historic Honey Horn is open to the public, rain or shine, on Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is $5 per person; parking is free. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. For details, call (843) 689-6767 or visit coastaldiscovery.org.

Coordinated by The Rotary Club of Bluffton, Mayfest – a.k.a. the Bluffton Village Festival – is held annually on the Saturday before Mother’s Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Calhoun Street in Old Town.

A celebration of Bluffton’s singular “State of Mind,” the event features dozens of local and regional arts and crafts vendors, live music, delicious food, the eagerly anticipated and hotly contested Ugly Dog Contest, Pie Eating and Donut Eating Contests and plenty of activities for kids. Admission is free.

Mayfest was cancelled in 2021, which would have marked the 43rd anniversary of this hugely popular festival. At press time, 2022 events details were not yet available, check their Facebook page or visit blufftonmayfest.com for updated information.

What makes you STRONG?

BY CHRISTY BARONI • PHOTO BY ROB KAUFMAN

Athletes in any sport pursue strength with everything they have. A stronger backhand, a longer drive, a bigger squat; strength is at the base of every PR (personal record). But even long after competitive days are over, strength can be the key to wellness, longevity, and vitality.

SO WHAT DOES BEING STRONG MEAN? In what areas does strength matter? Does physical strength translate to any other discipline? I have three areas that are key to living a strong and a healthy life, both physically and mentally.

MEALS. That’s right, your plate can build your strength or take it away. A strong plate is one that encourages cell turnover and sustains energy levels. A handful of green veggies several times a day can do just that. Adding a cup of spinach to your omelet in the morning is a great start, as this will plus-up your already lean breakfast with vitamins, minerals, and heart-healthy omega-3s. On the flip-side we know that added sugar does the opposite. Foods high in added sugar do not provide the level of satiety that a whole food does, and may actually trigger a binge later in the day. This cycle is tough to stop once started. So create a strong plate that includes lean proteins, green veggies, and plenty of flavor.

MUSCLES. This is likely the most obvious area, so let’s get to the business of building and maintaining lean muscles. A lean and muscular body may provide an aesthetic that is visually appealing, but that is nothing compared to the internal benefits of carrying lean mass. Lifting weights with short rest intervals allows your body to produce testosterone along with human growth hormone. For men and women alike, the combination of naturally produced testosterone and growth hormone is the fountain of youth we are all looking for! To effectively build muscle you will want to work to failure in each muscle group. Consider bicep curls: complete 3 sets of 10 reps, then increase the weight and do as many as you can until complete muscle fatigue. Working to failure ensures that you are at your own limit for any given exercise.

MINDSET. Merriam Webster defines strength as; “the capacity of an object or substance to withstand great force or pressure” which opens up the consideration of strength from physical to something mental as well. Being strong physically is nice; being strong mentally is necessary. Mental toughness allows a person to not just endure life’s challenges but to thrive among the chaos and uncertainty in any situation. A mentally tough person can withstand adversity, challenges, and most importantly failure. A mentally strong person can see failure in light of what is possible, not just in the short term.

WHAT AREA ARE YOU STRONGEST? Where can you build strength? Regardless of your age, competitive nature, or athletic prowess, all of us can and should be pursuing a strong body and strong mind.
