Returning

Chief Content Officer and Strategist Lynn Tryba

There’s lots of talk this time of year about going “back.” The kids are trying to avoid thinking about going back to school, we’re starting to get back into our usual routines, the family returns “back home” from a vacation during the dog days of summer. But are we really going back? There’s a reason the old adage that “change is the only constant” has stuck around. The kids may be going back to school, but they’re returning to study something new, maybe even attending a different school. Our routines vary by the day regardless of season (whether we want them to or not), and “back home” can mean a different home across the country, a newly emptied nest, or an in-law apartment with our grown-up children. Rather than thinking of going back, this time can be used to move forward. We can take our children’s health to the next level by making sure they have the nutrition they need to do their best (page 13). We can stop allowing time to take its annual toll on our skin by figuring out how to boost collagen production and maintain moisture (page 16). And we can look to the future and all of its inevitable changes with optimism knowing that there are ways to maintain our cognitive function (page 20). We can all go “back to school” in the next few weeks to learn to embrace the coming changes and improve our lives and those of our family members as we go. Here’s to your health!

Drinking chokecherry juice helps to prevent inflammation, oxidative stress, and iron depletion after intense physical exercise, according to a recent study. Members of the Polish national rowing team drank about 1.7 ounces of the juice, or a placebo, three times a day during eight weeks of Olympic-level training. Certain health measures were significantly better in the group that drank the juice. “Re: Black Chokecherry Juice Improves Inflammation and Iron Metabolism Parameters After Intense Physical Exercise” by Laura M. plant compounds boost health Substances called polyphenols in edible plants are known to have positive effects on health. Two polyphenols of particular benefit are

found in apples and green tea. They block the effects of a molecule that promotes the growth of plaque in the arteries. Arterial plaque can lead to heart attacks and stroke. A recent study showed that a polyphenol from green tea (epigallocatechin gallate) and one from apples (procyanidin) directly block signals from the harmful molecule. “New Evidence for How Green Tea and Apples Protect Health,” Institute of Food Research, 4/13/15

Treatment with a supplement containing two strains of probiotic bacteria reduced triglycerides by 20 percent in a new study. The probiotics also significantly raised apolipoprotein A-V, which modulates triglycerides in the blood. Participants in the 12-week study had borderline to moderate hypertriglyceridemia. They received 2 grams of powder containing Lactobacillus curvatus HY7601 and L. Plantarum KY1032 each day, or a placebo. Both probiotics contained 5 billion colony-forming units. “The Triglyceride-Lowering Effect of Supplementation with Dual Probiotic Strains . . .” by H.Y. Children have higher nutritional requirements for their weight compared to adults. And while most experts advise that those nutritional needs are best met through high-quality foods, we all know that’s easier said than done. A multivitamin/mineral supplement is a safe bet for filling in the gaps. Falling short “So many kids don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables,” says Andrew Weil, MD, who adds that kids’ diets are often “full of processed and refined foods.” He recommends a multivitamin/mineral supplement that includes a complete antioxidant formula, but cautions that such supplements “shouldn’t be substitutes for whole foods, especially fruits and vegetables.” Even if your child doesn’t fall into the category of “picky eater,” a nutritional supplement may be a good idea. Many kids fail to reach the recommended intake for vitamins A, C, E, and K, and for minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Children who are particularly active

may benefit from a multi, and vegetarian kids often need a boost to ensure they are getting enough iron, B vitamins, and other nutrients. Anyone on a dairy-free diet may fall short of calcium. Also keep in mind that carbonated sodas may leach vitamins and minerals from the body, while fast foods and other processed foods may fill a child’s stomach but leave plenty of nutritional gaps. Also consider a multi for kids who experience delayed growth or have food allergies. Multis aren’t the only supplements to consider for your kids. Omega-3 fatty acids have a wide range of health benefits. They’ve been shown to reduce the risks for allergies, asthma, and infections. Research shows that omega 3s can help promote learning by supporting focus and concentration. Keeping your child healthy often starts in the gut. Probiotic supplements can boost the immune system, and they’ll help restore balance to the gastrointestinal tract after a round of antibiotics too.

Kid appeal While all supplements should be kept out of a child’s reach, they do come in forms that make them more appealing to kids (as well as being more appropriate than an adult dose). Children’s probiotics, for example, come in chewable and drinkable forms, while multivitamin/mineral options are readily available in gummies and liquids too. Check labels for sugar content and avoid artificial colorings or sweeteners. Also take care to avoid megadoses that exceed their needs. Remember to check with your healthcare provider before adding a nutritional supplement to your child’s diet. Collagen serves as a structural protein in skin, contributing to a plump and smooth appearance when present in abundant amounts, explains Joel Schlessinger, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon. Unfortunately, as you age, your body makes less and less collagen—which encourages line formation and sagging skin. In much the same way, says Dr. Schlessinger, levels of hyaluronic acid in the skin also plummet with the passage of time, adding to the problem of wrinkles and the loss of skin elasticity. These two compounds work as a great team: While collagen creates structure for healthy skin, hyaluronic acid brings plumpness since it attracts and traps moisture in the skin. With plentiful collagen and hyaluronic acid, skin has a smooth, firm look and feel. Collagen and hyaluronic acid stand up to their hype, according to scientific research. When a combination supplement of these compounds was taken daily for two months, researchers documented noticeably firmer skin, a smoothing of wrinkles, and less-deep laugh lines. In other research focused on crow’s feet, collagen supplements went headto-head with dummy pills in 114 women, who supplemented daily for two months. By the end of the study, the women’s telltale eye crinkles measured less deep in the collagen group. This effect had real staying power too. When researchers eyed those crow’s feet again four weeks after the end of the study, there was still a noticeable benefit from the prior collagen use. For even more collagen support for your skin, Dr. Schlessinger recommends adding a topical vitamin C serum to your skin care regimen—it promotes collagen production and minimizes sun damage. —Victoria Dolby Toews “Daily Consumption of the Collagen Supplement Pure Gold Collagen Reduces Visible Signs of Aging” by M. Culprits vary, but many aspects of the standard American lifestyle are to blame: insufficient sleep, too much stress, not enough exercise and social time, chronic disease and inflammation, drug side effects, and a junky diet. Fortunately, there is hope. In one study, nine out of 10 people with memory loss associated with Alzheimer’s saw a reversal of symptoms following a holistic, multifacted plan geared to each individual covering things like increased meditation, exercise, sleep, dietary supplements, and a clean diet. Alongside a healthy lifestyle, certain herbs and dietary supplements can play a tremendous role in your ability to think clearly and reclaim your brain. Vitamin D, vitamin B12, and omega 3s may play major roles in cognitive well-being. Optimal doses help improve brain function and mood as well as allay age-related decline, and deficiencies markedly impair memory, focus, and function.

While almost anyone can safely take these supplements, their memoryboosting effects are most impressive if you actually have a deficiency. When buying omega-3 supplements such as fish oil, seek a quality brand that ensures freshness and the absence of contaminants. Rancid oils may smell unpleasantly fishy. Anemia (iron deficiency) can also cause fatigue and brain fog; however, only supplement with iron if low iron levels have been confirmed by your healthcare provider, because excess iron may increase your risk for certain health problems. Gotu kola (Centella asiatica) has a long history of use in Ayurveda, India’s traditional system of medicine, for boosting mental abilities. According to ancient texts, drinking fresh-pressed gotu kola juice for a few weeks will help you retrieve forgotten memories and develop near photographic memory! Preliminary animal and human studies support the herb’s ability to improve cognitive performance,

continued from page 21

working memory, and mood while possibly reducing age-related decline. Gotu kola has many other health benefits, including reducing anxiety and stress while improving physical strength. While “pennywort juice” is not commonly available, you can find gotu kola in tincture, capsule, and tea forms, or simply eat the fresh leaves. It is also known as “brahmi.” Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is among my favorite adaptogens for its ability to improve vitality and energy while decreasing anxiety and inflammation. Yet it has more tricks up its sleeve. In a doubleblind, placebo-controlled study of healthy adults, ashwagandha capsules (500 milligrams [mg] taken twice daily) for two weeks significantly improved reaction time and cognitive test scores in healthy young adults, including alertness, attention, speed, and sensory-motor performance. Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea), a stimulating adaptogen with neuroprotective effects, has shown promise in clinical studies. In one study, students performed better during stressful exams. In another, hospital night shift workers experienced less fatigue and improved mental function. It is most often taken in pill form but may also be taken in tincture form.

Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum, or O. tenuiflorum), also called holy basil, is another adaptogen that benefits brain function. Preliminary tests suggest that it inhibits enzymes that interfere with neurotransmitter function and also improves cognition while offering neuroprotective and antioxidant benefits. Many mint-family herbs, not only tulsi but also spearmint, peppermint, lemon balm, sage, and rosemary offer benefits for the brain. Their invigorating scents and anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, circulation-enhancing properties play a role, but research has also focused on their ability to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE). This work improves the activity of neurotransmitters that aid brain function and tend to diminish with cognitive issues and aging. Highlights of some of these studies include one 1,600 mg dose of lemon balm improving memory performance in as little as one hour. Food-like doses (750 mg) of rosemary improved memory speed in older adults, but megadoses of the herb worsened it. Spearmint extract improved attention, concentration, memory, and planning in older adults. Lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus) helps nerve cells regenerate,

something once considered impossible. Preliminary research suggests that it contains nerve growth factors that help stimulate nerve growth, heal nerve damage, improve cognition, and fight dementia. In a small study, 30 older Japanese men and women who took 3 grams of powdered lion’s mane (in capsules, divided up throughout the day) performed significantly better on cognitive tests at two, three, and four months compared to the placebo group. Unfortunately, the benefits diminished once the treatment ended, so you need to continue taking it, at least in the face of dementia. Green tea (Camellia sinensis) may reduce the risk of dementia and mild cognitive impairment in the elderly. For healthy adults, green tea increases brain activity and working memory, as well as scores on cognitive tasks. Japanese researchers testing elderly patients with mild to severe dementia found that three months of green tea supplementation (equivalent to two to four cups of tea daily) improved dementia assessment scores and short-term memory. food for the pro prebiotics help good bacteria thrive

Imagine, for a moment, that your body is a bed-and-breakfast. As innkeeper of your body, surely there are guests that you’d prefer never check in again (like chicken pox or that nasty little flu bug, for example). And then, there are the type of guests you want to linger, to stay a spell. Probiotics are on this list. Probiotics from foods and supplements add to the “good bacteria” found in the digestive tract. There are some 400 different kinds in the human body, and their job is to keep the gut healthy and balanced. Think of them as great guests: Certain probiotics are known to help with irritable bowel syndrome and diarrhea, along with some non-gut conditions such as eczema and allergies. Now, indulging in the B & B scenario once more, you’ll want to treat your best guests to top-notch cuisine—your probiotic lodgers are going to want a healthy diet of prebiotics. Prebiotics are carbohydrates that can’t be digested in our bodies, but act as food for good bacteria. They can be found naturally in artichokes, asparagus, bananas, garlic, honey, legumes, oatmeal, onions, and whole grains. Combining both pre- and probiotics, say, from yogurt or kefir, creates a symbiotic relationship—a pairing of bacteria and their food source. Prebiotics and probiotics are also available in supplement form. Researchers continue to discover the benefits of prebiotics. One common group of them—fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) —may reduce cholesterol and balance blood glucose. FOS may also improve the body’s absorption of calcium and magnesium. New studies suggest that when added to infant formula, prebiotics bring the powdered product closer to breast milk in overall health value. Although the evidence that prebiotics significantly benefit babies’ immune systems is limited, studies show that prebiotics may assist in maintaining general gastrointestinal tract balance and stool consistency. More research is needed to confirm these possibilities, but when used in combination with probiotics, prebiotics may also be a promising treatment for acne or wounds and provide increased protection from the sun. Talk about five-star service. —Karen Lovett

athlete’s foot (tinea pedis)

What is it? Flaking, peeling skin between the toes and on the soles of feet. Symptoms include itching, burning, redness, cracking, and dryness. What causes it? Mold-like fungi known as dermatophytes. These fungi grow in warm, moist places and can be spread through direct contact. Swimming pools, steam baths, locker rooms, and showers are common places to catch athlete’s foot.

Homeopathy: Berberis vulgaris, Psorinum, Sulphur, Silica, Graphites, Sepia.

Lifestyle: Wear shower shoes in warm, damp

places; wash and dry your feet thoroughly every day; change your socks and shoes during the day if your feet feel damp from perspiration; wear open-toed shoes as often as you can; powder between your toes and sprinkle powder in your shoes every time you change them.

Herbal therapy: Clove, echinacea, lavender, tea tree. Apply diluted oils topically; take echinacea internally as well.

Make your own oil: Apply garlic oil, available in capsules, directly to the affected areas or mix with a few drops each of clove, lavender, and olive oils. Apply topically continuously for a few weeks to several months.

American kids consume 28 percent more sugar than they did only 16 years ago, and the rate is still rising. The US Department of Agriculture advises limiting the amount of added sugar to no more than 8 teaspoons a day in a 2,000-calorie diet, but our children are getting double to nearly triple that amount. Averaging about 23 teaspoons of sugar a day, or 175 cups a year, some young children consume their own weight in sugar every year. To tell whether your child is addicted to sugar, check to see if any of the following scenarios apply. If even one is true, it’s time to turn that sugar addiction around. ■ Your child drinks more than one sweet beverage a day (including juice, soda, flavored milk, sports and energy drinks, flavored water, sweetened teas or coffee). ■ Your child’s breakfast usually centers on something sweet, such as sugar-sweetened cereal, a doughnut, a toaster cake, a breakfast bar, pancakes, or waffles. ■ Your child eats more than one or two sweet treats a day (candy, cookies, pies, yogurt sticks, fruit roll-ups or gummy fruit, cake, cupcakes, or frozen desserts like ice cream). ■ Your child eats little for dinner (and may eat few to no vegetables) but always has room for a sweet dessert. ■ Your child has trouble stopping at one serving of a sweet food and screams for more. ■ Your child’s mood seems to be determined by diet; he or she gets full of energy after a sweet treat and crashes an hour or two later. And it’s not just a problem for kids: The average adult consumes 140 to 150 pounds of added sugar every year from processed food and beverages. Your children’s health and the length of their lives depend on their eating a varied, well-balanced diet. The best thing a parent can do is to be consistent and strong while helping a child withdraw from sugar. In the end, when you have removed added sugar from your child’s diet, it will be worth it. – From Beat Sugar Addiction Now! For Kids ($16.99, Fair Winds Press, 2012)
