The 40-square-kilometre (15-square-mile) Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a very unusual corner of the earth. Laurel trees and two-metrehigh ferns create a fog forest in which beard lichen hang down from the trees, and moss clings to gnarled branches – one of nature’s mystical spectacles. The laurel trees are relics from the tertiary period.
