COLD WEATHER TYRES NEEDED MORE THAN EVER With recent media reports that councils across England are slashing their spending on winter road services like gritting, there has never been a better time for motorists to fit cold weather tyres to help keep mobile throughout the winter. Reports state that many councils are cutting their budgets for services such as salting, gritting and snowploughing, with some reducing their spending by as much as 30 per cent compared to last year. In light of this, and the overall safety benefits of fitting cold weather tyres, Michelin is urging drivers to seriously consider whether they can afford to be stranded in their cars due to bad road conditions at any time during the winter months. Apart from the obvious benefits of being able to get to your destination, cold weather tyres offer performance advantages over their summer counterparts when the weather turns bad and the temperature gauge drops below seven degrees centigrade. The special rubber compounds used in these tyres mean that the tread stays soft and flexible when

summer tyres’ rubber starts to harden and reduce grip. As a result they help to reduce braking distances, and improve handling and traction on dry, wet, snowy and icy roads. Commenting on the news, Jianni Geras, Michelin’s head of car marketing said: ‘Bearing in mind how many cars are on the roads, especially over the Christmas holiday period, we hope drivers get the message about the improvements in safety that are available by fitting cold weather tyres. ‘With people visiting relatives and heading off on winter breaks and ski holidays it makes sense to do everything in your power to ensure you get to your destination safely and not to take any chances with missing flights or ferries.’ Michelin’s range of Alpin cold weather tyres, including the German ADAC 2011 test-winning Alpin A4, is available to suit the majority of vehicles on the road including cars, vans and 4x4s.

JAGUAR XJ SPORT Jaguar’s award-winning flagship XJ saloon – which combines elegance, drama and sporting prowess – is now available with optional Sport and Speed Packs to further emphasise the performance aspect of its character. The Sport Pack – available throughout the XJ range – comprises a number of exterior and interior design options that clearly underline the assertive side of the car’s personality. Externally the appearance of the XJ has been made even more dramatic with the addition of aerodynamically optimised changes

KYLIE’S QUIET REVOLUTION Kylie Minogue led a Quiet Revolution to launch the Lexus CT 200h earlier this year, fronting a major advertising campaign that has earned Lexus a Quiet Mark award from the UK Noise Abatement Society. The ads focused on Kylie enjoying the hush of the CT 200h’s driver’s seat to demonstrate the near-silent running of the full hybrid luxury compact car when moving around town on zero-emissions electric power. The effectiveness of the campaign has been recognised with NAS’s award for excellence in quiet product design, presented to Lexus at a

ceremony in London last night. Gloria Elliott, NAS Chief Executive, said: “The Lexus campaign aligns with the aims and ethos of the Quiet Mark to encourage the manufacture and marketing of quiet products to improve the aural environment for the benefit of all.” Paul Marshall, Lexus General Manager, Strategy and Marketing, said, “We are delighted to have received the Quiet Mark award, a fitting acknowledgement of a campaign that emphasised how quiet performance is an important and desirable element in the quality of the CT 200h.

Driving at night can be challenging. Limited visibility can make it hard to spot hazards on the road. XenonMax, from Ring Automotive is the first bulb to put up to 100% more light on the road, compared to a standard bulb, allowing motorists to see potential hazards earlier and more clearly, as well as providing better reflections from road markings and signs. The unique filament technology combined with the Xenon gas produces a bright white light with enhanced performance for a greater light out put. The stylish

blue coating reduces glare for other road uses. XenonMax is ideal for all motorists, whether you are driving in the country or the town. XenonMax bulbs are street legal and are a simple upgrade from standard bulbs, requiring no changes to vehicle wiring. For the brighter choice, see the difference yourself. Not ever y day you get given one of these bad boys. But lucky enough for us we had a good enough reason for Land Rover to hand over the keys to one of the newer versions of the Range Rover Spor t for 2011. A new limited edition and a whole load of new updates to the Range Rover Spor t and to top that off we had a special job to under take with the vehicle. We had been asked to look af ter some celeb’s at this years Mobo awards in Glasgow so concourse we said yes but what would be the best vehicle. Well Land Rover answered that question for us, a 2011 Range Rover Spor t! We looked af ter some of the UK’s top Urban DJ’s and star’s including Chipm u n k , T i n c h y S t r y d e r, Tr e v o r N e l s o n , T h e M a c Tw i n s a n d s o m e o f t h e UK’s top Record label hot shot’s!

15

But enough of that celeb nonsense lets get down to business with this Range Rover Spor t. We had the new version of the 3.0 LRTDV6 engine, Land Rover’s latest v6 diesel engine. The engine is equipped with the same parallel sequential turbo charging system and third generation common rail fuel injection system as in the previous models but throttle response and torque have been maximized! Increased off-road ability fur ther improved for 2011 include hill start assist and gradient acceleration control all included in the package. The Luxury pack is available as an option but worth getting bringing the equipment levels close to that of the Supercharged Models. Includes contract stitching on the u p h o l s te r y, t i t a n g r i l l e and vents, 20 alloys, and upgraded sound system set up, heated steering wheel and adaptive cruise control. Driving the Range Rover Spor t about town was very TARMAG.CO.UK

comfy and you don’t feel like you are driving a tank. Parking isn’t an issue as sensors cover the front and the rear along with a reversing camera which strangely sites up at the top brake light level but does of fer a good view for those extra tight spaces. Motor way driving is a dream especially with the adaptive cruise control which IM sure you are aware what that does. But Land Rover’s are renowned for their 4x4 capabilities, well we never took this one 4x4’ing but we have been out in the 2011 Range Rover Spor t with the Land Rover Experience crew at Knockhill at the Motorfair earlier this year and w e c a n s a y Ye s t h e s e c a r ’ s per form as good on road road as they do off road! Well enough talking, time for you to book your test d r i v e a t y o u r l o c a l d e a l e r.

Honda has unveiled an allnew ASIMO humanoid robot with a world-first technology allowing ASIMO to move without being controlled by a n o p e r a t o r. W i t h s i g n i f i cantly improved intelligence and the physical ability to adapt to situations, ASIMO has taken another step closer to practical use in an office or public space. Honda has also introduced a new task-per forming robot arm. This experimental model was developed while applying multi-joint and posTARMAG.CO.UK

To r e p r e s e n t a l l o f H o n d a ’ s robotic technologies and products such as ASIMO, Honda has established the new collective name ‘Honda Robotics’. Under this name Honda will continue the development and research of humanoid robots and will also focus on applying the robotic technologies

31

All-new ASIMO The all-new ASIMO has taken a step for ward from being an “automatic machine” to an “autonomous machine”. It now has the ability to make decisions based on its surroundings and the movements of people. At the beginning of the development process, the following three factors were

High level balancing ability - maintaining its posture by putting out its leg in an instant. External recognition capability - takes in information, such as the movements of people, from multiple sensors and predicts the changes that may take place. The ability to generate autonomous behaviour - making predictions from gathered information and determine

the next movement without being controlled by an opera t o r. Once these had been identified Honda went about developing the technologies required to make them possible. Advanced intelligence capability Honda has developed a new system that is key for advanced intelligence. The new system continuously evaluates the input from multiple sensors, predicts the situation and then determines the behaviour of the robot. With this technology ASIMO is now capable of responding to the movement of people and the surrounding situations. For instance, ASIMO can now predict the direction a person will walk and quickly determine an alternative path to take if a collision is detected. This technology also enables ASIMO to recognise faces and voices. gy enables ASIMO to change landing positions mid-movement. This new agility also gives ASIMO the flexibility to adapt to changing situations so that it can walk on uneven sur faces. Improved task-per forming ability Honda has developed a highly functional compact multi-fingered hand, which has a tactile sensor and a force sensor imbedded on t h e p a l m a n d i n e a c h f i n g e r. Combined with the object r e c o g n i t i o n te c h n o l o g y, t h i s multi-fingered hand enables the all-new ASIMO to per form t a s k s w i t h d ex te r i t y, s u c h a s picking up a glass bottle and twisting off the cap, or holding a soft paper cup without s q u a s h i n g i t . M o r e o v e r, A S I MO is now capable of making sign language expressions which require the complex movement of fingers. The robot arm moves on a selfpropelled base and was designed with the idea of being utilised at disaster sites or TARMAG.CO.UK

other places too dangerous for people to work. The stability control technology used for ASIMO’s walking and running were applied to stabilise the end of the arm even on unstable sur faces. The application of other ASIMO technologies such as the multi-joint control technology that controls as many as 57 m oto r s i m b e d d e d i n t h e joints of the arms and legs, has enabled the robot arm to approach an object and perform necessar y tasks even in a narrow space with unstable footing and many obstacles.
