Christine Carty

Hello everyone! Despite the unusual amount of summer rain, we have not let it dampen our spirits here in TÉÓ. It has been an extremely busy few months where our committee have been coming together on numerous occasions to discuss the development of TÉÓ. Since our last newsletter we’ve had the pleasure of attending Áras an Uachtarain on a number of occasions and we’ve also learned how to save lives on our recent CPR course. The spirit of the Games were also alive and well with our former chair taking on the role of game maker in London. Please continue to see how he got involved! Congrats to Cian on representing us well.

As we move into the autumn of 2012, we’d like to remind you that we are now moving into the peak of the TÉÓ year. We will soon be welcoming the new “goldies” into our organisation as they receive their gold awards in September. We’ll also be putting in the foundations in the coming months for 2013, so if you wish to get more involved with us next year in a more formal capacity, please send us a message. So.. all that’s left to say is see you all that the upcoming post gold ceremony drinks to raise a glass to Arthur.. and speak to you all very soon! Christine, Chairperson

Firstly our mental energy was harnessed a the Genysis summit in June whereby stakeholders from across the Gaisce community came together to provide feedback on the award to aid its future development. This provided a fantastic opportunity to give feedback on our experiences with the award. More importantly we were extremely privileged to be part of a summit whereby our views were

being heard in a manner that will hopefully help our award to develop into the future. A few weeks later, the garden parties of Aras an Uachtarain kicked off. Karen and I were lucky to attend on behalf of Tar Éis Óir with many representatives from across the youth community in Ireland. A great day was had and we made some new friends from right across the youth community, not to mention the opportunity to tuck into some delicious apple juice made from the apples of the Aras estate itself!

Please make sure you keep in contact with us if you have an interest in attending such summits in the future on behalf of TÉÓ . The more involved you are the more opportunities you will have!

The event began with an opporutnity to meet President Higgins and his wife Sabina in the drawing room of Áras an Uactarain. Each person present was photographed with the President and his wife before we were invited to the marquee. At the marquee there was live music from a number of different bands and artists followed by a speach from the President himself. The event was an amazing occasion for all those who attended it.

“Change is inevitable, and conscious involvement in directing change is empowering, and very different from drifting with change. Being the arrow, not the target means being active not passive in this time of challenge and change.” President, Higgins, 3rd July, 2012.

Extracts from

President H i g g i n s ’ Speech

“Changing our country for the better in an inclusive and creative way is possible if we work together. We need young and old, people of all backgrounds, to join forces and support each other, to work together to transform Ireland, to create a kind of Irishness we can be proud of at home and abroad. We need young people to share their vision and help us to build together a real republic that provides opportunities, hope and respect for all. In doing this we can draw on the idealism of our past but also imagine our as yet unrealized possibilities – ár féidireachtaí gan teorainn.” “The active engagement of all of our citizens in decision making at local and national levels is a hallmark of inclusive citizenship. Such participatory decision making depends on both enhancing the capacities of people who previously have been excluded from decision making, on the one hand and on creating, and if necessary reforming, the institutional mechanisms for their voice to be heard on the other.” Tuesday 3rd, July, 2012

Being Young A n d I r i s h

Seminar Series

Tar Éis Óir members were asked earlier in the year to volunteer at various ‘Being Young and Irish’ seminars which were being hosted by Presdient Higgins as part of his initiative to increase the involvement of young people in directing change in Ireland. We had a great response to this from accross Ireland. We have already had two seminars in Dublin and Cork which were a major success with a number of TÉÓ volunteers assisting proceedings on the day. We are so greatful to those who have given up their time and who have volunteered to give up their time at later dates to help with this fantastic initiative brought about by our new President.

The next seminar to take place will be in Monaghan on Saturday 22nd of September. The second will take place in Galway on Saturday 29th of September and the final national seminar will take place on November 10th in Áras an Uachtarain. The deadline for becoming a volunteer has passed but it would be great if you could attend in the audience. It will be a fantastic opportunitiy for you to engage with the President and share your ideas regarding young people in Ireland.

G lo b a l Awa r d H o l d e r ’ s N e t wo r k ( GAHN ) Wo r k s h o p, S i n g a p o r e , Au g u s t 16 t h - 20 t h 2012. The GAHN is a global association of Award Holders Associations. Gold Awardees aged between 20 and 34 years of age were recently invited to a workshop in Singapore in August. This event is a platform for Gold Award Holders to make a difference through their leadership and contributions in their communities, equip them to become a future resource and role model and foster international engagement. This report was kindly written by Felicia Pickard, a GAHN delegate at this conferenc who is Chairperson of Canada’s National Award Holder’s Association.

“The GAHN workshop was an excellent event that brought together 26 representatives from all over the world, and particularly the Asia-Pacific region, to take part in collaborative brainstorming sessions on how to move forward the set-up of a Global Award Holder’s Network within the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award International Association. The backgrounds of us participants were quite diverse ranging from students to business professionals, but we were all Gold Award Holder’s who were eager to share our successes and difficulties of getting Award holder’s groups going in our countries and who wanted to work towards establishing a Global Award Holder’s Network.

Throughout the workshop, there were informative sessions by guest speakers such as an address by Dr. Tan Chi Chiu on Servant Leadership, an overview of the International Council strategic projects by past youth reps and survey results of a global survey on Award Holder’s. There were social activities that included attending a Meet-the-People-Session where us participants got to have a better understanding of issues facing the people of Singapore and getting to visit Singapore’s newest attraction ‘Gardens by the Bay’. There were also group brainstorming sessions were we were able to work in small groups to discuss future steps and what was needed to set-up the GAHN. Coming out of the workshop, the Global Award Holder’s Network now has a concrete group of people to move it forward. There has already been a Facebook group created where people can share information, and one of the big outcomes of the workshop was the creation of a document on ‘How to Set-Up An Award Holder’s Association’. This document will be presented to National Award Associations at the International Forum in Malta as part of the ‘Life After Gold’ development session and will be available online for countries to use.” Felicia Pickard GAHN Delegate – Canada Chair of the National Award Holder’s Committee - Canada

I am also an RGS Off-Site Safety Management trainer, where I focus on risk assessment and management in remote environments.

Volunteering at the Olympics was a privilege and working in the Stadium was even more so. The highlight had to be working with a great team of volunteers from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds.

You could never tell who you would come across in the crowd or in the athlete’s medical room as the Stadium events was very high profile. However, they seemed to really enjoy themselves too. The vast majority of the team were volunteers and it was encouraging to see the volunteering spirit alive and well. It helped that there was a really good volunteer management programme and we received quite a lot of training in the run up to the games. What I didn’t carry etc. Whilst there was a bit of tension, there imagine that it would end up competing a multi was a great atmosphere with lots of participants discipline adventure race just a few months latter chatting on the shuttle bus up to the startline and – after receiving a bit of cajoling from fellow TEO Killary Adventure centre. We had both selected the member and OFSSM participant Emma Farrell intermediate category and got a glimpse as the wave who suggested that the Gaelforce Connemara ahead of us set off. It was apparent that this wasn’t Challenge might be fun event to take part in. going to be easy – nor did it turn out to be at any stage of the race. For those of you who have somehow missed the great wave of publicity that has accompanied We crossed the startline and took off across a bog, “Adventure Racing” in the last few years, they are to the left and right of me some participants were multi discipline events that typically incorporate, gingerly placing their feet, trying to avoid getting a mix running, cycling, kayaking in the Irish wet. Within the first minute most of them gave countryside and events are pitched from all levels up, as racers sank down to their ankles and beyond from elite professional athletes to fun events that are in the bog. The pack began to spread out as we designed for mere mortals like the rest of us. squelched their way through to the relative firmness of the westerrn way and took off on a run with The goal that Emma and I set ourselves was 200m ascent to the summit above lettershanballey the completion of the aptly named Gaelforce forest before descending downhill (with a few spills Connemara Challenge. The Gaelforce brand and tumbles) to the cycle transition area. of events (run by Killary Adventure centre) is synonymous with adventure races in Ireland and its flagship event’s are Gaelforce West, run out of Leenane in Co.Galway and Gaelforce North at the foothills of Mt Errigal in Donegal. The Connemara Challenge however, is pitched at a somewhat lower level for those who are new to adventure races and comprised a mere 31 Km of which 17 km was on bicycle, 2 km in a two man kayak and the remainder across bogs and up mountains on foot! Having set ourselves the goal and entry fee’s paid, the next problem we faced was strategy. The race organisers gave details of the type of terrain we would encounter, bog, mountain, rough forestry tracks, sealed roads and lots of open water.

Here bicycle and tyre selection began to pay a big part in success. Whilst racing bikes and their derivatives (like mine) zoomed off with great speed, the colite tracks soon brought many crashing back to earth and shortly the tracks were littered with would be speed demons with their puncture repair kits off. Meanwhile the slower and heavier mountainbikers and hybrid cycles spun past at a leisurely rate – including Emma! 11 minutes latter I had the tube changed and was back on the tracks again. Once the road cyclists hit sealed roads, they took off and places changed rapidly between the competitiors as we made our way through the stunning connemara countryside, eventually making our way back to the transition area at the K2 adventure centre. Having shed the cycling gear, it was back to trail shoes for a 1km downhill run to the kayak phase of the race. This consisted of 1km of Kayak up the Fjord in two man kayaks.

The queue that built up as competitors waited for kayaks to become available gave competitors the chance to take a well earned rest, before starting their journey up the fjord towards lennane. After making it up the ford, it was back on the proverbial shanks mare again, as we headed down the coast towards Lennane, before executing a sharp right hand turn and beginning the final phase of the race – an ascent back the way we’d came travelling along the western way. At this stage the bright weather we’d enjoyed so far turned, and rain set in. For some competitors, it could only be described as a relief!

The ascent across a mix of gravel, mountain path continued with conditions getting progressively worse seemed to go on for an age until we hit the last 1km of the course and the finish line at the K2 adventure centre came into view. At this stage the ascent turned into a descent across the rough boggy terrain and all competitors picked up a new spring in their step. Finally we crossed the finish line to be handed a warm cup of soup, a bread roll, a medal and the all important finishing time! The Connemara Adventure Challenge is definitely a fantastic event that would be of anyone who is interested in dipping their toes in the world of adventure racing. Participants of all abilities took part, of all ages and all walks of life. For some of us though, its kindled an interest in doing future events.... and rumour has it there area few TEO members heading for the Killarney Adventure Race in October.... See you there!” Neil
