A Note From the Publishers Theodore Nicolaris, while judging the percussion performance of the Santa Clara Vanguard in 1991, became excited by the ending sequence of the show. At one point, looking for the right words, he proclaimed “It’s…it’s like…violent…ICE CREAM!!” Yes, it’s a stretch, but what a great phrase for the title of this book. And besides, this is a collection of rudimental taste treats (often rather offensive, if not outright violent). But let it be stated that there exists a fair amount of variety from piece to piece. One solo may be a barrage of notes flying from every angle; another may focus on subtle nuances in dynamics and phrasing (not to mention timekeeping, “Bolero” lovers). One may be specific about every detail while another leaves more creative freedom to the performer. Reading any and all performance notes beforehand is strongly encouraged, but ultimately it is up to your discretion as to how much to adhere to the given instructions for each piece.

This book presented a, shall we say, unique notational challenge. Each of the contributors had a contrasting style of writing, playing and often gravity-defying acrobatic pursuits. We therefore felt that from a notational standpoint a certain degree of freedom in engraving styles was appropriate. Given this, we also were determined to maintain enough consistency from piece to piece that you, the snare book consumer, would be able to jump around a little without having to go through too many hoops.

Prior to each piece there is a legend describing the various noteheads and symbols which may be used as a reference point. There was some effort at finding a relatively uniform system of note symbols here, so after a brief, albeit frustrating, back-and-forth bout with the legend pages, we hope you will find memorizing them isn’t difficult. You may also find instances of instructional repetition.

This is entirely intentional, and hopefully there is enough of it to get the points across. For further reference, we are currently in the process of adding to our website some video of these pieces being performed. Global Instructions Sticking Sticking symbols appearing underneath or next to notes are as follows: “R” for right, “L” for left, “B” for both. When sticking symbols appear in text, they may be marked “R” or “R.H.,” or “L” or “L.H.,” depending on the context. In certain cases when there is a repetitive sticking, such as all R’s or all singles (RLRLRL) for a significant duration, one of two abbreviations may be used: 1) “…” (ellipsis) indicating that a single hand is to be repeated, or 2) “etc.” (et cetera) indicating that a sticking pattern is to be repeated.

Articulations and Fractional Dynamics ^

Most of the articulations you will encounter are labeled and defined in a legend appearing before each solo. However, you will always find regular (>) and marcato ( ) accents. Regular accents above a note indicate a general increase in volume and stick height. Marcato accents indicate a more acute increase in volume and stick height.

In addition to the standard dynamic markings, fractional dynamic markings have been incorporated in some spots for further clarity. For instance, a marking such as F/p indicates that all accented notes are to be played at the mezzo forte dynamic, while all non-accented notes are to be played at the piano dynamic. All dynamic markings in the piece will generally apply until the next dynamic is encountered.

3-Way Backsticking?

Since this is not really a “techniques” book, it is assumed that the reader knows some of the more basic tricks. For example, a “regular backsticking” would be executed in the R.H. by rotating the stick backward around the fulcrum (much like an extra-loose upstroke) and striking the head with the butt end of the stick. In the traditional L.H. grip, the result would be the same (striking the head with the butt). However, in the execution the L.H. must temporarily switch to a pseudo-matched grip and then back again.

During this standard 3-way backsticking description, we’ll concentrate on the R.H. Usually this is incorporated in a running series of notes, and the hand (or hands) executing the trick will cycle through three different strokes as follows: 1) regular backstick, 2) 2nd/3rd finger backstick (from the first backsticking stroke, put the 3rd finger under the stick and rotate the stick in a counterclockwise motion so the bead strikes the head), and 3) butt stroke (grip the stick in the matched grip position with the butt end facing forward). If the cycle continues, you end up with the stick in the normal orientation after three more strokes.

Nick Angelis “Train Wreck” Performance Notes “Train Wreck” was written as a compilation of different styles of playing that I acquired throughout my seventeen-year drum corps career. I had seen many great solo artists participate in solo competitions in the mid-80’s. The players that most intrigued me were the ones who kept a flow to their piece while still allowing for the audience to stay involved. “Train Wreck” was written as a tribute to these artists. Concept: Who could play the fastest, strongest, and sustain it? I made sure that my solo would follow in their footsteps. It has always been a challenge for me to perform it at a high level. I hope you enjoy this solo and that it will inspire you in the same way I was.

Bio Nick Angelis has been an active member in the drum and bugle corps activity for 23 years. In 1992 as a member of the Santa Clara Vanguard, Nick became the Drum Corps International (DCI) Rudimental Snare Drum Solo Champion. In 1993 he became a member of the Star of Indiana, where he was honored as the Drum Corps Midwest Solo Champion, as well as winning high drums with the corps at the DCI finals in Jackson, Mississippi. He attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. As a Music Education major, Nick participated in the Minuteman Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, and a variety of percussion, instrumental, vocal, acting and dance classes and ensembles. He has studied marching percussion with Thom Hannum, Ralph Hardimon, Al Murray, Scott Johnson, Chris Dufault, and others.

Tyler Dempsey “Rodent Tomfoolery” Performance Notes “Rodent Tomfoolery” was written during the 1995 DCI summer season. The skills required to play the solo were acquired over several years of drum corps experience, drawing from many different styles, idioms, influences, and instructors.

The basic concept of the piece is a combination of elements commonly found in individual rudimental drum corps solos. The only twist to this concept is that grips will be changing throughout the piece. The four grips that will be utilized are matched, traditional, reverse traditional (right hand traditional), and double traditional (both hands assuming the left hand traditional grip). By utilizing all four grips, the visual elements of the solo can be exploited more…if you are daring enough to get the tricks in. From here, the elements are blended to create the base concept of the solo. Display “chops” while doing tricks to get from grip to grip, maintaining a high level of musical expression and creativity.

Bio Tyler has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance with an emphasis on percussion from San Jose State Univeristy under Anthony J. Cirone. He was the 1996 Percussive Arts Society Individual Snare Drum Champion. His drum corps experience includes marching with the Colts, the Bluecoats, and the Santa Clara Vanguard. Tyler has performed at the grand opening of EuroDisney, at the Hotel Paris, with Tom Float’s newest “Trash Can Trio,” and in several semiprofessional and community orchestras. Tyler has spent the last six years teaching percussion at a multitude of high schools in northern and southern California. He was the percussion caption-head of West Coast Sound Drum and Bugle Corps for two years. Tyler is currently performing with two independent percussion groups in Las Vegas. He is also a Pro-Mark endorser/educator.

Jeff Queen “Tribute” Performance Notes This solo was the culmination of everything I had learned throughout my Drum Corps career. I guess you could say that it started in 1990 and evolved every year until 1995. I still have some licks that I played in my first DCI solo ever!

I wanted to do something that nobody had done before, at least not to my knowledge. This is difficult to do with drumming because everything is a hybrid of something else. I had never seen anyone play on two drums before, and I had never seen anyone play SLOWLY in a solo.

I also wanted to use the Mylar sound and feel and contrast this with the Falam head sound and feel. Hope you enjoy.

Parts 1 and 2 – Opening Statement Part 1 Here I present each of the main themes that appear throughout the solo and the voices (drums) on which they will be heard. At the 7/8 bar, use the accelerando as well as the crescendo to gain maximum effect going into the flam passage and the backstick flam-drags. The whole segment should grow in intensity all the way to the release.

Part 2 Allow a short reaction time before starting this section. Note the placement of notes on the head, as a contrast in sound is needed for maximum effect. The intensity of this section needs to top the one previous since the opening statement concludes here.

Part 3 – Slow Segment This section begins with a restatement of one of the main themes as well as some old-school rudiments (flam-ratamacues and inverted flam paradiddle-diddles). The main emphasis in this section is on playing the notes SLOWLY with correct heights (grace, tap, and accent). Use this section to show off 3-height control as well as single stroke speed. Max out the dynamics with the singles in the last few bars (especially the last) as fast and as soft as possible.

Part 4 – Backsticking Segment Here I presented most of the tricks and backsticking patterns I knew. I began this section with one of the main themes heard in the beginning of the piece and ended it with the bolero theme, tying it all together. Exaggerate the 16th note rests in bars 6 and 11—more of a breath—extending for a split second longer than what is notated. For the inverts slurred to sextuplets, allow the inner beats to rise in height and widen the placement of the grace notes until you are playing sextuplets. The last bar should be played very staccato and soft, creating a bit of tension into the final section.

A special note about the flips. The flips are executed by hitting the drum and letting the rebound take care of the rotation of the stick. Raise the wrist so the point of impact and rotation will allow the stick to clear the rim of the drum. Stay completely relaxed and release the stick EXACTLY on impact to the drum. The harder you hit the drum, the more rotation you get.

Part 5 – Closing Statement This section should be played just a few metronome clicks under the previous tempo. Allow the opening sextuplet to “answer” the sextuplet that ended part 4. Milk the crescendo into the stick toss. Once you hit the left-handed triplets, start a long accelerando into a final restatement of the themes of the piece. There should be a peak after the drum-to-drum scrapes into a long deceleration while restating the themes into the final paradiddle accelerando. Use the first few bars of this to loosen up before going into the ending. The paradiddles should accelerate very slowly the first time through the pattern, less gradual as the pattern repeats, but smoothly overall. Let it all out when you hit the rolls at the end and into the final statement of the piece.

Bio Jeff Queen marched in the snare lines of the Canton Bluecoats (‘89), Velvet Knights (‘90, ‘91), Santa Clara Vanguard (‘92), Blue Knights (‘93, ‘94, ‘95) and the University of North Texas (‘93, ‘94, ‘95). He was section leader for the Velvet Knights (91), Blue Knights (‘93, ‘94, ‘95) and the University of North Texas (‘94, ‘95). Jeff was the Drum Corps International Individual and Ensemble Snare Drum Champion in 1994 and 1995 as well as the Percussive Arts Society Individual Snare Drum Champion in 1994 and 1995 (something no one has done before or since at the time of this publication).

Jeff was the snare technician for the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps from 1998 to 2000 and also taught the Blue Knights and the University of North Texas drumlines.

Chip Webster “Bolero For Ed” Performance Notes “Bolero for Ed” is based on Ravel’s “Bolero,” oddly enough. It was commissioned by Ed Choi and performed by him at the University of Toronto. Most recently it was performed by Jeremy Whiting of SCV at the 1999 DCI Individual and Ensemble Competition, where the performance was dedicated to the memory of Art Velarde, SCV Bass Drummer.

“Bolero for Ed” is a finesse solo. It requires more control than “chops,” more dexterity than speed. Pulse is maintained consistently throughout the solo, and the performer should take care in the preparation of a superb closed roll. Where certain sounds are desired, the stickings have been supplied by the author. In all other cases, the performer can, and should, play with the choice of sticking most suitable for the passage and for the mood of the piece.

Generally, this solo should flow loosely, punctuated by short, often staccato passages. The essence of the original work is at times very obvious in this arrangement, while at other times it is hidden by counterpoint. The performer should become familiar with the original work and will enjoy discovering the variations and subtleties presented here.

Mike McIntosh “Three” Performance Notes This solo was originally named “Hobbes” since I was a huge “Calvin and Hobbes” fan back in the day. To be as musical as possible, the solo was renamed to account for the sonata form (exposition, development, and recapitulation.) As you will see, three-note groupings are predominant throughout along with a three-stick section. The solo began as a project on late night drum corps bus rides. It was first developed in the fall of 1988 and had gone through three years of revisions before the version you have before you was settled upon. It is a mishmash of original ideas augmented by some of the great solo ideas from the late eighties and early nineties. I would like to thank Tom Float, Ralph Hardimon, Scott Johnson, Kevin Murray, Nat Barouche, Pete Sapadin, and Jeff Prosperie for inspiration as well as rhythmic ideas.

Section “One” is a display of virtuosic speed and quality of sound. Dave Dillulo once said, “As an opening statement, play the things your good at.” The solo starts off with groupings of three, alluding to the binding musical thread. It then fires up to let the crowd know you have spent a little time on the drum. I like using different implements on the drum in order to achieve different textures. A snare solo is more limited than, say, a tenor solo or bass ensemble because you have one membrane in which to achieve different colors. Therefore different sticks will enhance the texture. At the end of “One,” I used a medium-soft timpani mallet to create a different ostinato underneath the right hand. I used some of Jeff Prosperie’s rhythmic ideas from his award-winning 1989 PAS concert snare solo, “The Tasteful Snare,” again using the “three” motif.

Section “Two” begins with a groove section – an important piece of any solo mosaic. You have to give the crowd as well as the judges something they can dance to. Kevin Murray and several other North Texas friends were instrumental in formulating my groove. This gives way to another compulsory event – backsticking. I tried to take a fresh approach to backsticking, and to this end I believe I was the first person to backstick “hertas” in a solo format. The 3-point backsticking again alludes musically to the title. Make sure the quality of sound does not diminish when playing this section (or any section).

Section “Three” begins with the performer “airing it out” or “cleansing the palette,” allowing the judges and the audience to digest the craziness that took place at the end of “Two.” Buzz rolls are an important part of any solo, and are demonstrated here in the “scottish” section.

This quasi-scottish section is loosely based on Santa Clara’s 1984 drum solo. If you haven’t heard it, please find a recording and listen. Ralph sent us all in a different direction that year and it is still one of my favorites. The “scotch” section here uses groupings of nines in various formats and relies heavily on the dotted 8th/16th rhythmic device. After delving into another delicious flam pattern, the “crux of the matter” is displayed. I devised a whacky three-stick section based on the stick tosses of the early eighties’ Spirit Of Atlanta drum solos. I wanted to stay musical, yet memorable. Take your time with it. It’s “different,” to say the least. Again, this alludes to the title and musical thread that binds the solo together. The paradiddle section is another display of technical prowess, recapitulating the paradiddle section in the middle of section “One.” Let quality of sound dictate speed; don’t distort.

“Three” was first performed at the 1989 and 1990 DCI individuals competitions, placing 10th. I dropped three times at the DCI individuals competition in 1990...pretty musical, eh? In 1990, the solo placed 2nd at the PAS convention in Philadelphia. In 1991, it took 1st place at the PAS convention in Anaheim, winning by over six points…I finally had a good performance!
