I composed Napali after Jackie and I traveled to the Hawaiian Islands a few months prior to Gabriel’s birth where we visited the Napali Coast and its beautiful hiking trails overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The title is a tribute to my experiences on this trip.

PERFORMANCE NOTES The composition process for Napali began as a jazz lead sheet with a specifically arranged countermelodic accompaniment part. The fully orchestrated product creates a blending of two musical worlds: a percussion ensemble and a small/medium-sized jazz group. Whether performing the work with a larger group, as notated here, or simply as a vibraphone and marimba duet, instrumentation choices are definitely flexible.

Options for the melodic parts, other than vibraphone or guitar include lead/tenor pan or even a wind instrument. As long as the melody and harmony are represented, go for it!

Optional octaves are provided throughout the vibraphone part for the performer to consider as instrumentation begins to take shape. Guitar should be played an octave up throughout the piece so it sounds at written pitch.

The ‘X’ notations in m. 3 indicate an example of mallet dampening in which the one mallet dampens the ringing sound of the prior note. Consider this technique and concept as you begin working through the entire part. It will help alleviate any overuse of the pedal.

There are optional notes indicated (in parentheses) throughout the marimba part if a low F (4.5-octave) instrument is available. A medium mallet that resonates well in the low register but is articulate in the mid to upper register is preferred.

Incorporated into the drumset’s brush work at A and B are two sticking patterns that sweep the left hand.

The composer was influenced by Steve Gadd’s approach to groove and “pocket” while writing this. For feel (not sticking), his iconic Mozambique groove adaptation comes to mind at B. As the piece develops, thin sticks can be switched in and out with the brushes to accommodate both pacing and energy.

RESOURCES Audio recordings of the full instrumentation as seen in the score as well as a smaller setting for just vibraphone, jazz guitar, and marimba are included.

In the back of the score is an Improvisation Concepts sheet using a transcription of the vibraphone solo heard on the accompanying audio files (also found in the score) with text explaining the various options for constructing your own solo voice over these chord changes.

The original lead sheet with accompaniment is provided as well.

PLAYERS AND INSTRUMENTATION The full version of Napali requires 6 players with the following instrumentation: 1) Vibraphone (or lead/tenor pan) 2) Jazz guitar 3) Marimba (low A - with optional low F indications) 4) Piano 5) Bass guitar 6) Drumset

Napali may also be performed with as few as 2 players playing vibraphone and marimba parts, substituting or adding instruments as desired.

IMPROVISATION CONCEPTS By providing this solo, I hope to also give ideas that may help a young improviser feel more comfortable with the craft, achieving an end goal of developing their own solo and sound.

CONCEPT 1: Organize your scales into 3- to 4-note “melodic structures.”

In terms of scale degrees relating to each individual harmony, the two structures used thematically in this solo are: 5-4-3-1 and 9-1-7-5. These are nice shapes to use over “major 7” harmonies. Develop them not just within one but spanning two octaves in either direction. I appreciate the use of the 4th which is often taught to be an “avoid note” on major chords. If used well, it acts as a viable passing tone.

Note: Both of these shapes have the same intervallic relationship. Why is this an important characteristic? One shape will become the other when used over a different chord. For example, 9-1-7-5 over Fmaj7 (G,F,E,C) becomes 5-4-3-1 over Cmaj. You get two for the price of one!

CONCEPT 2: Harmonizing melodies in 6th intervals As theory-abiding musicians, we all understand a 6th is an inverted 3rd. To absorb the sound of the interval, go a step further and think of a 6th as a more “maturely voiced” 3rd. The sound opens up, creating harmonies that appear to be more evolved.

Practice tip: Practice your scales in 6ths with double stops. Don’t just play the notes in order. Skip around and create music!

CONCEPT 3: Blues Scales Without a doubt, blues scales are central to the jazz vocabulary. However, once the blues scale is learned, it is easy to fall into the habit of overusing it. As Napali lives in a “major 7” sound (as opposed to dominant 7), I would suggest picking key spots where this scale might contribute well. In other words, sprinkle it in rather than overusing it. I often find that using a blues scale at the end of a phrase is a nice way to cap off an idea with some soul. For example, the F major blues scale is used in measure 54 to “put a cherry on top” of the phrase.

• Major blues: 1, 2, b3, 3, 5, 6 • Minor blues: 1, b3, 4, b5, 5, b7 CONCEPT 4: Be fluent in your pentatonic scales.

Remember there are two! (Note: These are the building blocks of the blues scales.)

• Major pentatonic: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 • Minor pentatonic: 1, b3, 4, 5, b7 Stickings: For jazz mallet players, certain scale shapes flow nicely using double stickings. This eliminates the need to switch hands between the naturals and accidentals, creating opportunities for speed, quick direction changes and leaps, as well as rhythmic feel. For example, in measures 43 and 44, the Eb major pentatonic scale is used. The left hand never leaves the accidentals!
