INTRODUCTION FROM THE AUTHOR This collection of 2-mallet solos intends to fill the gap between beginner 2-mallet solos and 4-mallet literature. Most of these tunes will be familiar to a majority of listeners which will help guide them in producing good sound while focusing on technique.

Ranges are such that each solo may be performed on xylophone, vibraphone, or marimba.

There are a couple pieces toward the end of this collection that are ideally played on vibraphone; however, it is not mandatory.

There are also two duets at the end of the book. These are two-player versions of previous solos and intended to introduce players to the idea of chamber ensemble communication. Individual parts for these duets can be found in the files accompanying this book, or each mallet player may simply read from the score in their own book.

Piano accompaniment is optional, but it can provide yet another way for developing percussionists to practice ensemble communication. If a piano accompanist isn’t available, audio files of the piano accompaniment have been provided as optional play-along tracks.

In some cases, stickings are provided; however, these are merely suggestions. Teachers are free to adapt stickings to accomodate students’ abilities and technique.

It is my hope that the solos in this collection will provide performers of any age or ability a chance to connect with music through these well-known melodies we all love. My aspiration is that these tunes spark joy, interest, and excitement to further the performer’s musical journey in percussion.

ON WISCONSIN J.S. Hubbard & Charles D. Rosa Who couldn’t use a little school spirit? This popular fight song from the University of Wisconsin (go Badgers!) is simple enough to perform confidently with relative ease. It can also serve as a playing test or solo for younger percussion students. This piece was chosen as an homage to Center Grove High School, as it is their school song and where my work on this book took place.

THE HAPPY FARMER Robert Schumann The Happy Farmer is a simple melodic piece that is written in a less common key signature. Don’t let all those sharps intimidate you. This will be good practice for learning that key signatures don’t have to be scary. Take note of the sticking suggestions in bars 4–5 and utilize these throughout. Note the dynamics and be sure to perform with ample contrast to keep this etude interesting!

BOURRÉE Johann Sebastian Bach Originally written for lute, this popular piece by Bach has become one of the most famous pieces played by classical guitarists. The etude contains frequent accidentals and moves pretty quickly. So work on it slowly, maintaining accurate rhythm, and increase the tempo gradually as you practice. INFERNAL GALOP Jacques Offenbach This etude is on the easier side, as it contains a lot of repetition. In order to make it a bit more challenging, double-stops have been added. Also, an accelerando occurs just before letter B. This may come naturally to some students and require extra practice for others. The Can-Can melody at letter B should be very familiar and come quickly to most performers.

PIZZICATI Léo Delibes Pizzicati uses an extended marimba technique called the “dead stroke” in which the mallet is pressed into the bar rather than bouncing off. The technique should be used with care to avoid being too loud. The effect is to create a short, pizzicato sound (like the plucking of a violin string). There are also key signature changes. Be sure to observe the musical form as it relates to the Dal Segno al Fine as well.

SLEEPING BEAUTY Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky This is one of Tchaikovsky’s most popular ballets. It is a waltz and should have a slight emphasis on the downbeat to give it a light, lifted feel. There are numerous sticking options to choose from, so we’ve purposefully left them out so you (and a teacher, perhaps) can write in the stickings that best suit you. When playing octaves, take special care to ensure the hands are moving perfectly to achieve pitch accuracy. THE BARBER OF SEVILLE Gioachino Rossini This popular melody from Rossini’s famous opera offers the opportunity to perform dotted rhythms as well as triplets.

Be sure that all rolls at letters C and D are smooth and not too loud. For fun, the performer is asked to stomp their foot at the end for a rousing conclusion. Lastly, mallets are fragile. Be mindful not to click them too aggressively.

The use of the trill is common throughout this piece. Trills are performed by rolling the written pitch with the pitch one step above. Notice that the pickup measure is used throughout the piece in its correct format, including incomplete ending measures and repeats (which make up the difference of the preceding pickup). The constant sixteenth-note figures should be fun, yet challenging. There are also a lot of double-stops throughout the piece. When going from alternating strokes to double-stops, strive for double-stops that strike together rather than ‘flamming.’

BACK HOME AGAIN James F. Hanley This is a wonderful melody that pays homage to the Hoosier State, Indiana. It contains musical quotes from the Indiana state song, On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away. It is significant to Hoosiers, as it has been performed during the opening ceremony of the Indianapolis 500 for over 70 years. Ideally performed on vibraphone, you’ll notice it includes pedal markings. Be mindful to not pedal too quickly. Back Home Again allows you to spread your wings musically, so it’s okay if you detract from the suggested tempo in exchange for being more expressive.
