NOTES Written with a tip of the hat to Russian composers Dmitri Kabalevsky and Aram Khachaturian, Animal Cracker Rag is the kind of campy, two-beat fare often heard at circuses. Although best suited for xylophone, feel free to use the mallet instrument of your choice. The accompaniment for Animal Cracker Rag was designed to encourage percussionists to develop their piano skills as well. The part requires limited piano technique, and its repetitive, rhythmic style sits comfortably in a percussionist’s “wheelhouse.” Possessing a moderate degree of piano skills is a valuable asset to all musicians. It’s our go-to source for exploring music theory as well as for practicing crucial ear training exercises. For these reasons, piano study is required for everyone at music conservatories. Why not give one of your percussion buddies a shot at the piano part? This is a great opportunity to throw caution to the wind and have some fun.
