The kitchen’s knotty alder cabinets built by Mark Hempel and granite countertops soften the open kitchen’s integration into the rest of the house. “We were intimately involved with these cabinets,” says Steve, “watching the progress of their build.” The master bedroom has a sitting area with another kiva fireplace, as well as an entertainment center with in-wall speakers.
Their quarter-sawn oak bed and nightstands were also custom-built by Hank Livingston, with a distinct Craftsman design. With mountain views out every window, the bedroom is tranquil. A quiet pocket door reveals the master bath and the closet’s cubbyholes eliminate the need for dressers. If a love of nature wasn’t enough, the Nash home also shows respect for nature, by capturing the solar energy of
Northern New Mexico. For example, five passive solar panels (installed on the two-car garage) provide hot water and radiant floor heat. For additional warmth, the house has Trombe walls — southfacing walls separated from the outdoors by glass and an air space that absorb and distribute the sun’s heat during the cold months. The roof overhangs are built to just the right depth to shade the windows, insulating their home from the direct sunlight.
The spacious master bedroom features a seating area, fireplace and entertainment center.
