President & Conference Chair’s Message

As I pen my last President’s message to my fellow NHPPA members and any audience beyond, I am tempted to lead in with all-things Covid, Instead, I’ve chosen to not let Covid-19 take the limelight of this message, as it has taken so much from so many over the last year. Future readers of this publication can research on their own the virus that put our lives on pause for a time, and it is my hope that by then it will be a distant memory and we will have conquered it globally once and for all. Please take a moment to pause and reflect on those that we’ve loved and lost recently, but who we will always remember and who will always be in our hearts.

I am very grateful to have had the honor of serving two consecutive terms as President for the New Hampshire Professional Photographers Association. I joined the association in 2014 and after feeling so welcomed by everyone I met, I knew right away that I wanted to get more involved. As I learned from the amazing speakers, workshops, and image competition, and as my work improved as a result, I felt I wanted to give back in any way I could so I joined a committee, then the Board of Directors, and I know now that holding a position is not only a win-win for the member and the association, it is essential and is the lifeblood of our great organization. There are many moving parts behind the scenes at the NHPPA; there are lots of ongoing tasks and jobs to do - all volunteer - but they are rewarding and often very fun. My wish going forward is that more of our members will sit in on a board meeting (which now are all done via Zoom) to get a glimpse of how dedicated and amazing our team is. That they will talk with a board or committee member to see if there’s something that may be a good fit for them so they can give back too (and earn credits toward their degree as well!) We have many long-time members, and we have some new ones coming in and out. Now that I have served as President, I wish I could convey what an excellent experience it has been, and it’s not as daunting as you would think, when you have the support of a dedicated board. Even if you don’t aspire to ever be President, take a moment to check out the committees who can always use your help.

For the cover image this year, I chose artwork by the fabulous and accomplished Ella Carlson, M.Photog., M.Artist, Cr., CPP, F-ASP, EA-ASP, C.Ph because I wanted a cover that showed the conference theme, “Pirates” in an artistic and beautiful way. Thank you, Ella, for the wonderful design!

I want to thank the following people who stand out in my mind the most as I write this, but please know that I am thankful for each and every NHPPA member, past and present. To incoming President Chris Keeley - thank you for stepping up to work your way to President - with two little ones at home and being a new member at the time, I applaud you and I wish you a very successful year ahead! Lauri West, thank you for all of your years of hard work and dedication - you set the bar very high! Jean Wozniak, thank you for all of your help these past two years and for everything you do for the NHPPA. Madonna Lovett-Repeta, thank you for being a friendly face during those first meetings when I didn’t know anyone. Jean Camire, thank you so much for all that you do as Controller. The New Hampshire Professional Photographers Association (NHPPA) is a non-profit association of professional photographers and other interested persons who are dedicated to photography as an art, business, and science. The purpose of the NHPPA is to raise the standard of professionalism among its members through group and individual participation in activities and through the exchange of knowledge.

In this presentation/workshop, Padma will demonstrate how to photograph flowers for translucency using a lightbox. Participants will have time to get some hands-on shooting and Padma will show how to post process these images in Lightroom. Time permitting, she will cover more advanced techniques in Photoshop. Tim will bring you into his portraiture world using multimedia to share different collections of images to illustrate all of his teaching points. Initially focusing on the overarching style and how it can provide ongoing success, then moving into the marketing of your portraiture. There are methods that work over and over, but there have been many lackluster and several outright failures. Want to know how to have a successful studio or location portrait event? We have massive experience in a wide pricing range. In the next segment we talk about the camera room set up and operation, discussing the lighting we use, and have used, on location and in the studio. Backgrounds and posing devices that are successful are clearly explained and revealed. Finally, we are in the Kelly Studio camera room with a live model to illustrate land demo lighting and posing techniques. We will do Q&A as time and technology allow.

The thought of going near your sensor scares many people, but cleaning your sensor is something every photographer needs to do. Many people will send out their cameras to pay someone else to clean it for them, but it is something you can do very easily from home! Noah from Hunt's will go into detail about the basics of cleaning your sensor no matter which camera you are using! Sensor cleaning is something everyone is capable of just by following a few steps and using the proper tools!

A Little NHPPA History This image was taken during the very first NHPPA Print Competition in 1958!! This is Ron Covey in the center of the photograph. A demo on mat cutting was given by Paul Shafer of Connecticut. The association also held a Miss NHPPA competition. The two women with Ron were competing. The winner went on to PPANE. Ron and Don McCulloch received merits from PPA for chairing this event. Ron and Don were the co-chairs of the first mini convention. It was held in Manchester at the Warren Motel on Merrimack Street, across from the Merrimack Common. The two prints to Ron’s left were his images. 4

In this class Dennis will share his Portrait Retouching Workflow and techniques that he uses in his work for his clients. He will cover the best tools to use to clean up blemishes and smooth wrinkles as well as how he uses layers and Smart Objects to make the work go quickly while making it easier to revise and adjust the results. Mark's Photographic career started in high school as a staff photographer for The Elkhart Truth and South Bend Tribune newspapers in Northern Indiana where he photographed sporting events, feature stories and spot news. He is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Photography and for the past 20 years he has been in Clifton Park, New York photographing weddings and corporate events. Mark holds the Master of Photography, Master Artist, and Photographic Craftsman Degrees from PPA. A recipient of PPA’s Imaging Excellence Award and Imaging Excellence Bar, he’s been a Top 10 Grand Imaging Award finalist in 2019 and 2017 and is a 12 time IPC Medalist, including 2018 Diamond Artist Of The Year and 2020 Platinum Medalist. Rick has been practicing his craft for 46 years. He has lectured and judged at the regional and national level as well as in Mexico and Spain. His images have been recognized by receiving many Kodak “Gallery Awards” and Fuji “Masterpiece Awards”. In addition, Rick’s photographs have been displayed at Disneyworld’s EPCOT Center, Photokina in Cologne, Germany and in Korea at Imaging Asia. In 1986 Rick was certified by the PPA and received the Master of Photography degree in 1992. The Photographic Craftsman degree was awarded in 1994. He holds the Photographic, Educational, and Service Fellowship degrees from the Professional Photographers of Colorado. Joan became a professional photographer in 1980, joined PPA in 1983, is a Master Craftsman Photographer and a PPA Life Member. Joan has won many image awards and one of her proudest moments was when she received the Kodak Gallery Elite award for her image titled Beach Walkers. Joan has served on PPA’s Photographic Exhibition Committee and as chairman of the Juror Excellence Committee. Joan became a PPA Approved Juror in 2000 and a PPA Jury Chairman in 2013. Chris Richman is an award-winning photojournalist and fine art photographer. She has won awards from the NC Press Association, Carolina Nature Photography Association, Cary Photographic Artists, the Professional Imaging Group of Eastern North Carolina (PIGOENC- PPA local affiliate), the Professional Photographers of North Carolina (PPNC- state affiliate) and the Professional Photographers of America (PPA), including 2016 through 2020 PPA Photographer of the Year, and the PPNC 2018 & 2019 PPNC Photographer of the Year. She received the PPNC 2019 Service Award. Her twenty years as a senior research scientist, her decades of teaching and leadership in the informal science education arena and her years of editorial sports and event photography give her an eye for precision, composition and story-telling. In addition to coaching photographers through personal photography projects, Chris is a mentor, a frequent speaker, offers photo critiques and juries competitions for photography associations at both the professional and amateur levels. She has successfully completed the PPA Judges Workshop and is a juror for PPA Local and State Affiliate image competitions. She holds the PPA Master of Photography, Master Artist and Craftsman degrees and is a Certified Professional Photographer. She holds the Fellowship of Photography degree from PPNC. The Art Behind the Headshot with Peter Hurley

This will be a full-day class including live demonstrations. Peter is the premier headshot and portrait photographer in New York City. He is best known for the genuine expressions he captures for his executive business portraits and actors’ headshots. Peter travels internationally sharing his knowledge and “special sauce” with other portrait photographers. His Headshot Crew is the world’s largest team of headshot and portrait photographers.

Each winter, NHPPA offers a series of one day workshops to members. The classes are normally offered between January and March, and members can sign up to attend as many as they wish. There are a wide range of topics covered and superb instructors. There is a nominal fee of $60 for the first class attended and $40 for each additional class that goes directly into a “speaker fund” which helps create even more educational opportunities! PPA members earn one Continuing Education Merit for attendance at their first event.

2019 PPA National Award The National Award, as provided by the Professional Photographers of America, is a special honor recognizing outstanding service to our industry. The choice of the recipient is determined wholly by the State or Regional Association. It may be given to any member or non-member of the Association, and is not restricted to those in the field of photography. The only restriction is that no individual may receive more than one National Award from the same association during their lifetime. This award is presented to the photographer who enters FIVE (5) images and has the highest average point total from his/her top FOUR (4) images of which three images score 80 or above (Blues). In the event of a tie, the winner will be determined by the jury panel based on their body of work. If no one qualifies, the Chair may reduce the blues to two.
