Hello...

Penarth View www.penarthview.co.uk tanya@penarthview.co.uk

Welcome to our NEW look Spring issue – we are very excited to share our refreshing and handy size publication. We hope you like it just as much as we do, we are investing time and money into developing THE best local magazine for Penarth! Whether you celebrate Spring once Easter arrives or earlier we definitely think its time to get out and about. At Penarth View we have enjoyed interviewing new local resident Bethan Elfyn about her love of Penarth, Welsh music and her career with the BBC on page 26. We had a really good time interviewing fun loving resident Shelley Norton about her life as an actress and how she juggles life as a busy wife, mum and director of her talent agency The Big Talent. Once again it has been an absolute pleasure meeting you and introducing new business owners to one another at our ever expanding Women Mean Business network – we really do have some wonderfully talented local business women in town and you can catch up with events on page 40. So until next time, enjoy the bright light evenings – have fun and keep in touch! Keep it local!

DECADES OF MY LIFE: SHELLEY NORTON Interview by Tanya Brooks-Dowsett Born in the 70’s Shelley Norton grew up to the sounds of the 1950’s. Her Dad, Paul Barrett, was bringing American bands such as Bill Haleys Comets and Gene Vincents Blue Caps

opportunities could be found. Marriage brought about a need for a change of pace and they both headed back to London in order to save to move to Australia. The move involved selling everything they couldn’t post or didnt need and in 2003 they moved to the land down under. After many adventures in a camper van starting a family in Australia made Shelley pretty homesick and in 2005 they moved back to Penarth. I caught up with the loveable character that is Shelley Norton to find out a little more about her life as an actress and now talent agent.

Any great memories: My 21st birthday was spent recording an episode of Satellite City in front of a live audience at the old HTV studios. The catering guys made me a cake and everyone sang Happy Birthday. That felt very special. What do you love about Penarth? I love that I can walk down town and mooch round the charity shops. I don’t get much opportunity to do that anymore but when the children were babies that was my favourite thing to do. Seeing lots of familiar faces is also lovely. It used to drive me mad as a teenager that I couldn’t be anonymous but I love it now. Penarth View

Please tell us a fun story about you and your amazing family When I was a child my Mum rescued a monkey from a pet shop in Penarth, a green and yellow spider monkey, called Spike. He lived on a branch above our dining table. We were all terrified of him and he ruled the house for the short time he was with us. He would play the piano in the middle of the night and ride on the cats back. Sometimes we sat in the hall because he was in the living room and we didn’t want to upset him. Being a busy career woman, wife and mum... What’s your secret? I don’t think there’s a secret. It’s about coping and enjoying the journey and not beating yourself up if things don’t quite go to plan. I think finding the fun whenever you can helps. Simply enjoying the kids, enjoying family time and my husband and enjoying work and running a business. Having a positive outlook and starting each day afresh with a bit of a plan but also a bit of going with the flow. I do as little housework as I can get away with! How do you recharge your batteries? What’s your escapism? Dancing works. I love all sorts of dancing - lindy hopping, tap dancing or just having a good old dance with friends. I’ve also started DJ-ing and 6

Penarth View

thats a massive stress buster. You can’t think about anything else it’s a great way to focus the mind. and the whole buying records, choosing what you’re going to play, even cleaning old vinyl its all a great way to forget about the stress of the day job. Also, I love a good book. Tell us something about yourself that we don’t already know? I never finish a cup of tea unless it’s accompanied by cake or biscuits. What are your dreams and ambitions? For my children to grow up confident and happy. For my business The Big Talent School and Agency to go from strength to strength as a trustworthy and ethical brand promoting, training and representing young performers. If not Penarth where would you like to live and why? Family will always influence my decisions as to where we live. So if its not Wales with my family it would be Australia with my husbands family. Ideally by the sea, remote, with lots of wildlife. God knows what I’d do though - I may go stir crazy! So maybe it would need to be an Australian city like Melbourne where I can be busy and arty and yet close to the beach. However, I’ve got all that in Penarth so as long as the Australians in my family are happy with being in Penarth then here we shall remain.

coast to coast Each issue we will be setting off on our travels to enjoy what seems to be the buzz word of the moment - a staycation. We will be traveling along the UK coastline for a weekend and reporting back about our experience on where to stay, eat and drink. In late March we headed up to the North Wales coast. We stayed in a beachside apartment in a very cute seaside village called Degannwy just across the water from the bustling town of Conwy. Lynette Dungey tells us all about the adventure.

Deganwy Beach

I had a fantastic stay at Deganwy Beach Apartments. Deganwy itself is such a cute little town with some lovely little shops and restaurants. Situated right on the front with awesome views across the marina and across to Conwy Castle, there was something very calm and tranquil about this little beachside town. We arrived at lunchtime at the very chic and modern apartments that is Deganwy Beach, a

Coast Life beautiful complex of holiday apartments right on the sea front with amazing views. Deganwy town was just down the road so we had a little wander to checkout the shops and restaurants. From an old antique shop to a modern surf shop, there was something for everyone here. Not least nice coffee shops and a champagne bar! Looking across the marina to Conwy castle and Conwy town made us inquisitive to find out what was over there. Taking the 5 minute drive across the bridge into Conwy, we were soon parked up and ready to explore. Quite a big town with plenty of charming old shops, bars and restaurants. This town had everything, old and new. A nice lunch at the cutest little coffee shop, a walk along the beach front with old boats sitting peacefully on the shore, then a spot of shopping, made this afternoon in Conwy jam packed with things to do…

Driving back over to Deganwy, we decided to stop at the posh Quay Hotel & Spa on the marina for a quiet drink. The hotel was sitting right on the marina with the sound of boats clinking in the wind. A busy and popular place with the smell of good food. A quick stop there and we were then ready to head back to our apartment. The day was done and after all that fresh air and exploring, we retired for a night in of takeaway and wine whilst watching the sun setting across the marina and the mountains that surrounded it. The apartment was warm and cosy and perfect for a night in. I slept incredibly well with only the sound of the wind and the sea to think of. After a lazy morning, we left our apartment and took a drive to nearby Llandudno, just a 15 minute drive away for a tasty brunch and spot of shopping. Driving along the seafront, I was amazed by the great big old hotels that

stretched all the way across the front. A real seaside holiday town.. Altogether within just over 24 hours, we saw and experienced so much in this serene and peaceful part of North Wales. I would highly recommend Deganway as a perfect getaway for a weekend or even a week as there was so much to do and see and something extremely calming about this part of Wales.. I’ll be going back for sure….

enarth dock opened in 1865. By 1876 it had developed and had eleven coal tippers, four ballast cranes and one ten ton crane operating daily. With the working arrangements being so good coal wagons would frequently unload in the morning and then return to the collieries, refill and be discharged again the same day. As the dock operations grew

in 1960. The dock finally closed to commercial traffic in 1963.

Penarth’s population rose to 3000 by 1871 and then grew further when the railway between Penarth & Cardiff opened. By the 1890’s when a new entrance was dredged Penarth docks were capable of accommodating some of the largest cargo steamers of the day.

in the area. Penarth Quays Marina is open 24 hours a day with professional friendly staff happy to help customers with all their boating needs.

Between 1936 & 1940 Penarth dock saw a decline in the coal trade with only four coal hoists retained for the bunkering of vessels. This led to the dock being modernised and fully equipped for the handling of naval & military stores and equipment. During the 1939-45 war Penarth dealt with nearly 10,000 vessels, but after the war the trade declined further leading to coal loading and unloading discontinuing

The marina we see today was developed in 1985 and opened its lock gates in 1987. Over the past twenty seven years the marina has continued to develop and grow and now offers the best facilities and service to boat owners

The marina has three hundred and twenty fully serviced pontoon berths and operates a boatyard with a 20 tonne boat hoist and 15 tonne boat mover on the tractor. It provides a wide range of services and secure storage in the boatyard. Daily operations for marina staff include locking vessels in and out, lifting, washing and choking boats, maintenance around the site and the checking of customer’s boats. Local marine contractors provide a large range of services for customers and Pier 64 and Compass Coffee offer fantastic facilities to marina berth holders, local residents and passers-by. What is your secret to making your business such an amazing space to visit? I think offering a broad selection of seasonal flowers that are not always available elsewhere, offering the occasional floristry tip also works well, and of course the lovely smells! Which other amazing space in penarth do you like to visit and why? If I have a long weekend of weddings ahead of me I will always go to umpa lumpa sweet shop in the arcade for my sugar fix. I LOVE it in there.

We always enjoy coming up with creative window displays and we’re welcoming brides who are travelling from all over the UK to our little Boutique by the seaside so we like to make a good first impression. We’re proud to be giving brides an opportunity to do something a little bit different and supporting our wonderful Welsh designers. What is your secret to making your business such an amazing space to visit? We wanted to create a space which was a non-pressured environment. We want our clients to feel relaxed

as soon as they walk in through the door almost like they’ve stepped into our front room! We make sure it is always lovely and warm and with the gorgeous fresh flowers from our neighbour, Sweet Peony Floral Design, it always smells delicious too! St Davids Day food demo with a difference. I had the pleasure of joining an enthusiastic group of food lovers for the first of many food demos at James Sommerin Restaurant. If you are not sure what to expect when you visit then the chances are you won’t be disappointed. Some of the flavour combinations are certainly unique and I have to say my taste buds didn’t know what had hit them. The experience was first class. The staff are highly trained and friendly. I felt at ease and really welcomed at the restaurant. We all had a giggle and could have quite easily stayed

long into the evening enjoying jolly conversation. What was most refreshing was the fact we all took take time enjoying food with good banter with not an iphone in sight! When did you first decide that you wanted to be a chef? From the time I was about 8 years old, I started working in a restaurant from the age of 12 in Chez Giovanni, Newport Who inspired you? My gran Elinor How would you describe your style of cooking both in the restaurant and at home? Modern, British and relaxed In the restaurant – fish as its versatile, plus you have to love it with having a restaurant along the coastline At home – shepherds pie made by my wife Louise, the kids love going out to eat and their favourite is Indian food and going to Wagamamas because the food is fresh, fast and full of flavour with really friendly staff ! Tell us a little bit about the new James Sommerin Rooms... We have been working with Jewels from Penarth who have been

fabulous helping us with the interior design for each of the 9 rooms. It’s been both an enjoyable and challenging process thinking creatively on how each bedroom should look. The names of the rooms are being decided upon, something you think would be quite simple has become quite a task! The essence of the rooms are primarily for people coming here to dine and then wishing to relax, if you want to stay then you will feel welcomed to stay. We are offering a very homely and relaxed atmosphere. Breakfast will be served downstairs in the restaurant offering

really fresh local produce. Complimented with a wonderful sea view!

beach and relaxing with Louise and I at the restaurant

What do you have planned for this Spring? A new menu, which can be seen on our website www.jamessommerinrestaurant.co.uk. There are plans in place for another food demonstration. We are getting ready for the Penarth Summer Festival. One of our priorities will be getting out and about in Penarth and looking forward to working in partnership with local businesses like Penarth View, ACJ and Pizza Pronto.

What is the best thing about being a chef? Being creative, no day is ever the same. The fact I’m always meeting new people is the best part of being a chef and a fair few of our regulars have become really good friends

What did you feel when you launched your first restaurant in Penarth? Why did you choose to locate in Penarth? I was excited and apprehensive in equal measures. I’ve wanted to open my own restaurant for at least 10 years. I have been looking all over the UK at a variety of venues. I had the option to buy The Crown but I was keen for a fresh start and a new challenge and I certainly got that! When I came down to Penarth to view the site it was a lovely sunny day, I was sold on the view. What ever the weather there is something inspirational about Penarth. It’s the perfect place to bring up your family and being here makes me happy as I see much more of my children. They have embraced Penarth, they love the

I would just like to take this opportunity to say thanks for the support from all our customers both locally and from a far, it’s been a real pleasure meeting you and I look forward to seeing you at the restaurant again soon.

Introducing Bethan Elfyn Interview by Tanya Brooks-Dowsett

I have known Bethan since we were friends in Primary School in Newtown, Mid Wales. Life back then was as good as it is now, forever comparing our love for music and the media. Her media career has been such an adventure from rookie journalist, DJ at numerous festivals including Greenman, a fun few years with Huw Stephens on BBC Radio1 and now on BBC Radio Wales. What I admire most about Bethan is her passion for the Welsh music scene as well as her dedication to encouraging young musicians to follow their dreams. Recently as a new resident to Penarth, I caught up with Bethan to find out what she has been working on recently and what she loves most about Penarth. What is your connection with Penarth? I’ve just moved to Penarth in the last few months, but it’s always been a favourite hideout since I first moved to Cardiff in the 90s.

Love Penarth

What do you love most about living in Penarth? I moved here for the sea, it’s such a powerful

Home Life

force. However, I’ve since been enjoying everything about the place - the eateries, the coffee, the community, the commute, pottering around the shops and bumping into friendly faces almost anywhere you go. What does your typical day in Penarth involve? If I’m home with my young daughter we’ll love walking around town, nosing in the charity shops, and making our way through the park, past the aviary towards the pier. When you get some time to relax where in Penarth do you like to visit? The Hangfire BBQ at The Pilot was a family favourite, or The Pilot’s Sunday lunch is fab too. I loved the recent Artes Mundi expo at Ffotogallery, it’s so great to have such great galleries in such a small town. But the big draw is always the pier, sea front & clifftop park.

in Bangor before starting presenting the Radio One show for Wales, with Huw Stephens in 1999, called the Session in Wales. So I’ve specialised in Welsh music since then.

What does your role at The BBC involve? I’m a music specialist presenter with BBC Radio Wales, and currently project manager of an events & music team under the Horizons project - in collaboration with the Arts Council. We promote new Welsh music by selecting 12 acts to be mentored for 12 months. bbc.co.uk/ horizons

What can explain the idea behind BBC Horizons? The idea is to create a small window on a few Welsh acts, and see if we can help then in various ways to move forward with their music. We’ve seen the artists with the first year of the scheme travel internationally, enjoy network playlists, and play countless festival stages.

Tell us a little about your life in the music industry? I was a music producer at the BBC

Your secret gems in Penarth? The aviary in the park walking down to the sea

is a gem and indeed, the many hidden parks too! The Penarth heights views, and Dingle Road station, the street names & specialist shops - I really am taken by the place! I’d also recommend the Analogue Music Club, who meet monthly in The Windsor. Everyone must bring records to the night based on a different theme each month. Its so democratic - I loved the last one! Horizons Dates not to be missed: Horizons are on tour through March, at Chapter Arts Centre on March 29. Tickets are free. For more information about Horizons: bbc.co.uk/horizons from April see the new selection of 12 artists. Penarth View

Hopefully as you read this, Spring has sprung, and this time of year always feels like a good time to try something new. We’ve taken that literally and are rolling out a few changes at David Baker & Co. Anyone who has walked passed the office recently will have noticed our new décor, which has given us a fresher feel and has certainly gone down well with the team, our vendors and buyers alike...nothing like redecorating to give the place a good Spring clean too! Other changes are less physical and more online, the first of these has being the launch of OnTheMarket, a new property search portal. For those of you that haven’t visited yet, the site itself is very easy to use and now has more Penarth properties listed on it than either Zoopla or Prime Location, so if you are looking for an alternative to Rightmove it’s a great place to start. Speaking of websites, we re-launched davidbaker.co.uk a few weeks ago with the aim of looking better and working better than the previous one. We think the chaps at WebBox have done the job! We purposely kept the property search quite wide, to bring you more properties that you may not have found - it’s always good to view those wildcards!! Each property now also has its own video, giving you another way to find

out more information. These videos, along with regular industry news bulletins are available on our own site as well as our new TV site and YouTube channel. Keep It Clean! We’ve already touched on Spring cleaning, but of course anyone who has sold a house before will know all too well that selling means that it is always time for cleaning! This is potentially one of the most important - and sometimes overlooked - part of selling a house. In each Penarth View, we will give a tip for sellers, and this is a great place to start as to put it bluntly, no matter what type of property you are selling, people do not like viewing untidy ones. This does not mean extreme de-cluttering, or removing all your personal items! It simply means that any property needs a good scrub

before you let other people in. It’s all about creating that good first impression, so tidy away those clothes, mop and vacuum the floor, wash the dishes and clean the bathroom! We all lead busy lives but if you can get on top of this early then it should make it easier in the long run!

Providing Life-Changing Opportunities

Spring is traditionally a time for getting your home affairs in order but this year insurers are urging business owners to take the same steps. Now is the time to take a fresh look at your policies to ensure that your business is covered for all eventualities. Often your business has changed – you might have bought new equipment, moved offices or dipped your toe in a new sector – but your policies haven’t been updated, possibly making them null and void so, be wary! James Sommerin Do we really know how many services our church communities offer here in Penarth. They quietly and voluntarily entertain our toddlers and feed our elderly. They provide company and activities for the lonely, shelter from the stresses and strains of life. They are tireless in their provisions for our children particularly through the scout and guide movement. Do we even notice they are not some anonymous government body?

Make friends with Social Media

For details of the schemes at your local churches are on their individual websites. Penarth Cytun is a group of church communities that work together for social justice and fairtrade. A list of local churches can be found on their site www.penarthcytun.co.uk/churches

If this sounds like you, no need to panic as now Penarth View’s new digital marketing team can take care of it all for you.

Curious to know how social media can help your business? It is essential that your business has a social media strategy, but you personally haven’t got the time to do it?

It’s good news all around town, especially to hear that successful entrepreneurs are partnering together and keeping the Shop Local project alive. An example of such good work is blossoming this Spring between businesses like James Sommerin and Jewels. The fabulous interior designers have been commissioned by James & Louise Sommerin to manage the interior design for the 9 new rooms about to launch as part of the James Sommerin brand. Plus, Penarth View and ACJ estate agents are partnering up with James Sommerin to promote local business events within the town. James sommerin

I have found an inner strength to deal with the daily challenges and I am not as worried as I used to be. That they soon enough may feel just as exhausted and overwhelmed with the challenges in home and work life as I had felt prior to having Hypnotherapy. Penarth summer festival This year marks 50 years of the Penarth Summer Festival - and what a year it will be! The ten day fiesta will begin on Thursday 2nd of July and continue until Sunday 12th July with a wealth of fun filled activities for the entire family! Keep an eye out for the summer festival programme that will fill you in on all the amazing events taking place across the ten days! Throughout the festival there will be spectacular shows from local dance and drama groups, coffee mornings, craft fairs and foodie events. This year’s carnival day will be bigger and brighter than ever with plenty to see and do including a day of stage entertainment with the return of some old favourites and a profusion of activity to see in the sky! The Downhill Derby is back this year with an allnew format. The Downhill Derby team has been extremely busy coming up with ways to improve the event and have made lots of new additions to the course to make it more exciting for both the participants and spectators. Firstly, a number 50

Penarth View

of obstacles will be introduced however we will keep them as surprises for now –drivers have had it easy for too long! Another significant addition is the introduction of pit crews. Teams can have up to four people in their pit crew so each kart is able to have a driver, passenger (if needed) and 2-3 people to give the kart a push at the start line. Teams will be judged on creativity and/or speed. Every year the design and workmanship of the karts seems to improve so expectations are high - think bold, think big and think completely wacky! The kart is an extension of your personality so show it at its brightest.

Teams interested in participating in the derby should complete the registration form that can be found at www.penarthtowncouncil.gov.uk (Events) or contact the office in order to be sent the form directly. The event is free to enter and all those with a love of speed and a flair for creativity are urged to get involved! The racing will commence on Saturday 11th of July (Carnival Day) so don’t forget to bring your A-game. We’ll see you on the track!

ur expertise, built up over 28 years in the town, has enabled hundreds of people to come to terms with the aftermath of bereavement and the stresses it brings. We are well-known, professional and caring and we like to think we have been a great strength to many local families. Sympathy and professionalism are our hallmarks and we will do everything to organise funeral arrangements that suit your requirements and to pay appropriate and generous tribute to your loved one. We have three chapels of rest and a family service chapel on our premises and mourners are welcome at any time to pay their respects.

Owner Joan Paines says: “We are always available to help families and we can provide all the necessary services such as organising memorial services. There is a lot to think about obviously and our aim is to help you at all times and share your burden. As we are an independent, family-run business, we offer a personal service where we like to think of ourselves as more than just a funeral service, but more of a friend to the family.” We can also help you plan your own arrangements. It’s a subject you might not care to think too deeply on, but careful thought can provide peace of mind.

Average Cost Of A Funeral Cremation: Thornhill £2895.00, Barry £2995.00 Burial: Penarth Cemetery £2995.00 Includes: Hearse, One Limousine, Coffin, Robe, Plate, Bearers, Burial, Cremation, Church Minister, Doctors Fees. And a child with a short life deserves to leave their priceless mark on the world too Since 1999, Tŷ Hafan has helped over 600 Welsh families to make the most of their precious time together. We are the leading charity in Wales dedicated to the care and support of children who are not expected to reach adulthood and their families. Not only does Tŷ Hafan provide specialist palliative care, but it also offers a much needed source of strength, support and short break care for the whole family – from mums and dads, to brothers, sisters and grandparents. Tŷ Hafan takes its support right into the family home and is there to help these families through every step of their unimaginable journey.

Mason Day, with his Grandad

Archie’s life was limited to just two and a half short years, but the mark he made at Tŷ Hafan will last forever. Archie stayed at Tŷ Hafan for just under a month. We did everything we could to make sure those final weeks were packed full of happy moments. We were by the family’s side when they wanted support and gave them space to be a family, when they needed to be alone together. Whether he was having music therapy or sitting peacefully in our sensory room, he lit up the whole place with his smile. We said goodbye to Archie on Monday 25 March, but our support for Brad, Lauren and Jack didn’t stop there. To find out more, watch our video at www.tyhafan.org/leaveagift. Archie has left his mark on all of us at Tŷ Hafan in so many ways. You can also leave your mark right here in Wales. Once you’ve remembered your loved ones, please consider helping Tŷ
