USED EDGE DETECTION A unique new approach to used edge detection makes it very easy to identify wear with the naked eye, with the key feature being the fact that there is absolutely no impact on overall performance. The used edge detection was selected to give the highest possible contrast and excel in real-life working conditions in all new grades TP2501, TP1501 and TP0501.

Steel turning is among the most common of all machining operations, yet manufacturers still face production challenges such as insert wear and cutting interruptions. And while insert wear is inevitable, there are choices you can make to limit and control it. Those choices are the TP2501, TP1501 and TP0501 insert grades that we have maximized for reliable, predictable and productive performance. With these three grades, we cover all your needs for steel turning applications. Such optimization involves taking our extensive research and applying it to the further advancement of our unequalled Duratomic coating technology. As a result, you get insert grades that feature improved toughness, heat and wear resistance as well as chemical inertness for longer tool life, even at high cutting speeds. Designed for manufacturers focused on fast, reliable part production, TP2501 with Duratomic technology is the top choice for roughing and finishing operations involving a variety of workpiece material requirements and unpredictable working conditions. In fact, an estimated 25 percent of steel turning applications operate within parameters that demand the grade’s properties, including those in ISO P25.

Primarily applicable to workpieces made from softer, low-alloy steels, the TP1501 with Duratomic technology, with its well-balanced properties, is the top choice for operations requiring high wear resistance and elevated cutting speeds. In fact, an estimated 20 percent of steel turning applications operate within the parameters that demand the grade’s properties.

HIGHFEED 2 & 4

Seco’s Highfeed milling cutters permit up to three times faster machining than conventional methods. Shallow depths of cut paired with higher feed rates provide greater metal removal rates for extremely high levels of productivity. Now, Seco introduces two new families into its Highfeed line up, including Highfeed 2 with LP05 insert, which is one of the world‘s smallest high feed milling cutter with indexable inserts. Highfeed 2 and Highfeed 4 both incorporate new close-pitch and normal pitch designs, together with new inserts – LP05 and LO06 – that allow for more teeth/insert pockets per cutter diameter, as compared to the existing Highfeed range. With more teeth, higher feeds are achieved through the additional insert which excels in high-velocity, high-speed cutting of hard and tough-to-machine materials – especially when using smaller machines with high-rpm/low torque spindles. Performance results of the new cutters in terms of speed and efficiency far exceed those using larger, higher horsepower machines and taking slower heavier cuts.

The inserts feature two cutting edges for indexable technology in cutter diameters down to 0.5" (12 mm). Seco engineered the Highfeed 2 inserts specifically to handle sticky materials such as stainless steels, titanium and superalloys. Most importantly, the positive LP inserts provide a first choice for applications requiring a higher ramping angle or superior plunging performance.

DOUBLE OCTOMILL™ CASSETTE Seco introduces the new Double Octomill Cassette Cutter to its long successful range of face milling cutters. Using Seco’s advanced pinlocating technology, the new cassettes ensure fast, easy and precise insert positioning. Equally important, cassette pockets are adjustable to practically eliminate axial runout. The Double Octomill Cassette Cutter, incorporating Seco’s patented pocket design, features cassettes that are adjustable in the Z-axis or axial direction. Inserts can be mounted and setup in cassettes separately then assembled into the cutter body. Each individual cassette is then adjusted so they are all cutting on the same plane. With this exact insert positioning, the cutter allows for increased feedrates while it ensures the best possible surface finishes as well as the longest tool life possible.

FLEXIBLE 3D MILLING

BUTTON CUTTERS Seco’s new anti- rotation round insert cutters in 12 mm IC are the most flexible tools in 3D milling. They can be used for many types of applications like circular interpolation and helical interpolation ramping, shoulder milling, slot milling, plunging and ramping. This makes this type of cutter more effective than most of the products used for 3D milling. The round insert is a very strong geometry, which makes it suitable for machining in all types of materials. The strong geometrical shape also allows for high material removal rates. The new anti- rotation feature helps assist in the indexing of the insert, but most importantly, this new feature prevents the insert from rotating in the cut. MINIMASTER® PLUS

Seco continues to build upon its industry leading Minimaster Plus family with the development of new shorter flute lengths – the first of many planned product line additions. As part of the popular replaceable cutting head tool system, the new Minimaster Plus cutting heads with shorter flutes will handle higher cutting forces and in return, deliver increased metal removal rates in roughing and semi-finishing operations. The new cutters incorporate all of the same design features and benefits as existing Minimaster Plus cutting heads, only in shorter flute lengths. Existing flute lengths are 1.2 x D, while the new additions are 0.7 x D, which significantly boosts their stability.

Seco’s new PCD-tipped milling inserts – designed mainly for finish machining aluminium – work alone or alongside carbide inserts in the same cutter body. When used together with carbide inserts, the Turbo 10 PCD inserts perform as wiper inserts in fixed pockets and deliver superior part finish quality. Conversely, running all Turbo 10 PCD inserts in one cutter body ensures maximum cutting parameters and that the inserts are used to their full potential.

The two newly introduced PCD inserts work in all existing Turbo 10 cutter bodies. Both grades were designed to excel in aluminum, but can also be used for other PCD applications, such as polymers and fiber-reinforced polymers. X4 PCBN GROOVING

With the development of the X4 polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) insert, Seco widens its circlip-grooving insert product lineup. The new insert features a width size of 0.0846” (2.15 mm) 2.15 mm (ISO standard circlip/ retaining clip size) and is specifically built for heavy interrupted/unstable cuts – as with splines – in hardened steels. The insert’s solid-carbide body structure provides the needed stability while it also increases tool life. Four cutting edges, as opposed to only one, make the X4 PCBN cost-effective, while the capability to also use the tool for 6TPI threading adds even more value. In testing, the tool outperformed similar existing products for unstable conditions and lasted up to three times longer.

TGH 1050 GRADE As the newest addition to the Seco X4 family of parting off and grooving products, the unique TGH 1050 grade features a very hard micro grain substrate and new coating for efficiently cutting hardened steels. CW100 GRADE CW100 is an aluminium oxide-based insert with silicon carbide whiskers (Al2O3-SiCw). When dispersed into a matrix of fine-grained aluminium oxide, these extremely strong whiskers act as reinforcement, adding tensile strength and improving the fracture toughness of the brittle matrix. An Al2O3-SiCw composition, typically made up of 25 to 50 percent whiskers, is the toughest, most thermal shock resistant of all the aluminium oxide-based ceramic materials for inserts. As a result, the CW100 offers superior wear, fracture and notch resistance as well as high hardness at elevated temperatures when machining tough materials at extremely high speeds. CW100 excels in wet or dry applications, but Seco recommends the use of concentration-level flood coolant for wet machining.

SQUARE 11/4 SHANK CHASER HOLDERS

The two-pin system ensures extremely precise insert positioning from insert to insert as well as plays a key role in the holder’s increased rigidity. With more rigidity and support, the holder helps reduce the amount of required threading passes for generating a full thread profile. The new toolholder’s pocket seat surface features milled scallops that provide even more chaser insert support. When an insert is mounted in the pocket, the clamping force acts on the scallop pattern and work hardens the seat surface to a hardness of 54 HRc.

NEW CHIP-BREAKERS

With high-chrome, tough-to-machine materials in mind, Seco also equipped the new chaser insert holder with high-pressure coolant directed at key cutting areas of the insert. Coolant enters the holder from the back end, travels through an insert cavity directly to the insert’s chipformer and into the channels between each tooth. With a maximum output of 210 bar, the Seco holder delivers the industry’s highest coolant pressures for thread chasing operations.

ACCURACY AND ADAPTABILITY IN REAMING

PRECIMASTER™ PLUS Seco’s new generation Precimaster Plus modular, indexable-head reaming system provides accuracy and part processing versatility. Through a selection of various reamer shanks and heads, users can accommodate a variety of hole sizes and workpiece materials with fewer required tools. Additionally, new system design enhancements boost reaming speed, precision and repeatability for overall better production. With the system, industries such as aerospace and automotive gain extreme process stability and dependability paired with the lowest cost per part.

For chip control and management, Precimaster Plus reamer shanks can apply different types of flushing for both blind and through holes. Tool body coolant outlets in the front force chips up along head flutes and out of blind holes, while standard through-tool coolant blasts chips forward and away from the tool for efficient through-hole reaming.

Precimaster Plus now uses solid-carbide disposable heads up to diameter 32 mm, coated and uncoated, in various diameters that mount to a standard range of shanks. As opposed to traditional brazed-tip technology, solid-carbide heads allow for an increased number of cutting teeth on the same head diameters for faster feed rate capability. Solid carbide also extends tool life, delivers increased stability for tougher materials and makes for a more cost-effective system. A new Precimaster Plus patented high-precision connection ensures reamer head exchanges are fast and easy with repositioning repeatability and runout of under 3 microns. The new connection handles much higher levels of transmissible driving torque due to its special three-vertical-drive-pin design. Internal axial clamping forces draw heads up and into system shanks, creating a strong and secure interface. SECO MATERIAL GROUPS VERSION 2 (SMG v2) - INTRO SMG v2 is the foundation for a new and accurate way of organizing work materials and choosing the correct speed, feed rate and depth of cut for any work material and any Seco tool. In addition to using a greater number of work material groups compared to our previous system, SMG v2 also incorporates a reference material - or standard - for each group. The machinability of all other materials within that group can be compared to the standard, allowing for adjustments to the cutting data and accounting for the unique characteristics of each material.

THE USE OF SMG v2 IS ILLUSTRATED BELOW As shown in Table I, the reference material for work material group P4 is 1045, for P5 it is 4140 steel and for H5 it is 4140 hardened to 50 HRC. 4140 steel is available in a wide variety of hardness and tensile strengths. It will be expected that the machinability will vary with these properties.

The graphs indicate how the speed recommendation for a specific material can be adjusted to account for the different properties of the steel. As an example, consider 4140 with a tensile strength (UTS) of 145 ksi. The standard material for SMG P5 is 4140 steel with a tensile strength of 100 ksi. Since the material of interest is 45% stronger, the cutting speed will have to be reduced. Following the black arrows in Figure 1, it can be seen that a speed 75% of that recommended for 4140 at 100 ksi should be used. So if a cutting speed of 900 sf/min is suggested for a tool of interest when machining 4140 at 100 ksi, a speed of 675 sf/min (900 X 0.75) should be used if the 4140 has a tensile strength of 145 ksi. If the 4140 is quenched and tempered to a hardness of 45 HRC, an accurate cutting speed can be obtained by using Figure 2. The standard material for SMG H5 is 4140 heat treated to a hardness of 50 HRC. Logically, a softer material, in this case 45 HRC, can be machined at a higher speed. Since the hardness, 45 HRC, is 90% that of the standard material, Figure 2 shows a speed 120% that of the standard could be used. If a speed of 200 sfpm is recommended when machining 4140 at 50 HRC, a speed of 240 sf/min (200 X 1.2) could be used if the 4140 is 45 HRC.
