Student art promotes social media integration in the school
NEW GENERATIONS OF PARENTS REQUIRE NEW MODES OF COMMUNICAT ION. SCHOOLS NEED A WAY TO MAKE INFORMATION INSTANTLY AVAILABLE, IN A FORMAT THAT ALLOWS PARENTS TO VIEW CONTENT WHEN THEY WANT T O, IN A WAY T H EY WOULD LIKE TO VIEW IT. Social media has been heralded as the latest and greatest new marketing and community building tool over the past several years, and TanenbaumCHAT is ready to jump on the bandwagon to really leverage these tools for building relationships and strengthening networks. Organizations that are using social media to mature their social culture and adapt their work for a networked age are seeing much more than a rise in ‘likes’ on their Facebook Page. They are engaging new audiences, networking with other organizations, empowering new leaders, and listening carefully to their constituencies. makes a splash at the SRC
THE EARLY MORNING HOUR AND DARKNESS OUTSIDE COULDN’T DAMPEN THE ENTHUSIASM OF KIMEL CENTRE STUDENTS AT THEIR RECENT SWIM TEAM PRACTICE.
The official opening of the Schwartz/Reisman Centre was great news for the TCK Swim Team who now call the new Stupp Aquatic Centre home. Team coach Emily White says the kids are thrilled. “Once they arrive at school they can quickly change and be warming up in the pool. We have more time to practice and now enjoy the convenience of having a pool physically connected to our school.” Participating in extra curricular athletics has great value for our students. No matter what their sport, students active in athletics develop their time management skills in order to balance their curricular and extra curricular obligations. Being a part of a team helps them strengthen social skills, leadership and fosters team building. What sets our swimmers apart is that they mostly compete individually (other than relays). They need to be at the top of their “game” and perform well at each meet. They can’t depend on anyone but themselves. This type of competition allows our students to see what they’re made of and see how far they can push their own limits. Swimmers come in at all levels and strive to reach their physical and psychological potential with the help of our excellent coaches. “The swim team has an excellent history of having all its members qualify and compete at the YRAA championships and this year appears to be no different!” 4

Students involved in the Kimel Centre Visual Arts Department learn many valuable skills that aid in their success in a highly visual world. Art students connect to the past and also project their ideas onto the future by envisioning, critiquing, reflecting and relating to the visual world around them. They learn to appreciate and use historical techniques and materials as well as gain mastery of contemporary technologies and concepts. Participating in visual arts classes gives students collaborative experiences, confidence and creative problem-solving skills that are highly valued in today's workplace. Finally, arts courses offer the invaluable opportunity for the self-expression that teenagers crave as part of discovering who they truly are.

In its 6th year, the Kimel Centre music program continues to thrive. The Symphonic Band had a very busy start to the year performing six times at Feeder School Tours, Academic Awards, Grade 8 Open House, and the Grand Opening of the Schwartz / Reisman Centre. The vocal class, now in its second year, has doubled in size and students enjoy singing choral music in a variety of styles including jazz, popular, classical and musical theatre. Arts CafĂŠ performances were a huge success which included all of the major ensembles, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Senior Jazz Band and the TCK singers. Our dynamic and hard-working students make the music department a magical place to be. 6 | CHATTER MAGAZINE FALL/WINTER 2012

ducators can make a difference and that’s exactly why a new program was implemented to tackle the issue of mental health at TanenbaumCHAT’s Wallenberg campus. “Disable the Label” was designed to create both an awareness of mental health issues and, at the same time, give students a safe and comfortable place to talk about “the elephant in the room.” When Margaret Klompas, Head of Guidance for Wallenberg campus, attended a “Focus on Mental Health” conference geared to post high school institutions, she was struck by one of the statistics: “Seventy per cent of adults living with mental illness say symptoms developed before they were eighteen years old. The fear of stigma often delays diagnosis and treatment; therefore, early intervention can make an enormous difference over a lifetime.”
The Guidance Team was then mobilized and together with the Dean of Students, started to plan a year-long series of events, under this year’s school theme of Creating a Caring Community, to educate both staff and students. A callout to TanenbaumCHAT alumni was made inviting them to take part in a panel discussion for students to share how their illness affected them during high school and university and how they coped with their challenges. After receiving an overwhelming amount of replies, Mrs. Klompas realized that she had obviously touched a nerve. Current students also volunteered to help form a student committee. Presentations and a panel discussion by alumni for students have already taken place on eating disorders, bullying, drinking and driving, anxiety, as well as a presentation from Kids Help Phone. Faculty also received presentations on eating disorders, anxiety in students and the stigma attached to mental health disorders. Mrs. Klompas wants staff and students to understand that people who suffer from mental illness could actually be suffering twice – from the illness and from the lack of understanding.

TANENBAUMCHAT’S INAUGURAL GRANDPARENT DAY 165 new students were welcomed for a morning of activity at TanenbaumCHAT’s Wallenberg Campus .... well, not the usual students. These ‘students’, of another vintage shall we say, were equally as eager to participate in classroom activities … our very own TanenbaumCHAT grandparents.
Grandparents were welcomed by a host of volunteers, including the Tiger mascot.
After registration, breakfast and a welcome program, grandparents had their
timetables in hand and were escorted to their grandchild’s class for an interactive hour of
learning. This was really the highlight of their day … and all received passing grades!

The external walls of the future Guttman Family Science Wing are now clearly visible. The new wing will feature five state-of-the-art science labs, a greenhouse, science garden and project room. This new addition will have a domino effect of enhancements and improvements throughout the school. The Guttman Family Science Wing will transform the current U-shaped footprint of the school into a square, allowing for better circulation and navigation. The ever-popular school courtyard, used for many celebratory events throughout the year, will benefit from this construction with its own renovation. This inviting, multi-use open-air courtyard will feature a stage as well as individual landscaped seating areas that will foster the informal exchange of ideas and provide a welcoming space for students and faculty. The enthusiasm and excitement that this project has generated within our community has been astounding. We want you to feel the excitement too and are now offering hard hat tours of the building site. We also welcome your involvement with our Campaign Team, who has been hard at work for well over a year, but we could use more help. Bella Nussbaum z’’l was born in Kanczuga, Poland on February 10th, 1938. She survived the horrors of the war by hiding with her family for two and a half years in the attics and fields of several Righteous Gentiles.
Bella Toba Nussbaum z’’l
Upon her arrival in Canada in 1948, Bella was determined to set herself free from the atrocities that she had endured. Determined to lead a meaningful life while committed to learning, Bella mastered the English language in three months and completed five grades of elementary school in one year to catch up to her peers. As a voracious learner and top student at cheder, she was soon selected by the Rabbi to become one of the teachers at Talmud Torah. Years later as a grandmother, Bella applied her love of reading, Hebrew and Torah by volunteering at United Synagogue Day School as both librarian and tutor in Torah for students in the younger grades. In 1957, Bella met her husband Aaron. During their 53 years of marriage, they were blessed with two children and six grandchildren. Among Bella’s most notable qualities were her fierce loyalty to her family, her natural poise and elegance, her insatiable appetite for learning, and her innate business sense. Due to circumstance, Bella was not able to attend university after high school, but that did not lessen her desire for a university education. When her children started university, she also enrolled, on a part-time basis at York University. Although it took a little longer than the traditional four years, in 1991 Bella was awarded an honors BA in combined psychology and sociology with a minor in Jewish studies. She was a remarkably intelligent woman who imbued in her children and her grandchildren a thirst for learning. For the Nussbaum family, creating the preserves Bella’s memory. Her fervent desire was always to perpetuate a strong Jewish future through education and community. Her life was devoted to raising her family and she often said that one of her proudest achievements was sending all six of her grandchildren to Hebrew day school. This gift to TanenbaumCHAT is the perfect vehicle for the Nussbaum family to provide future generations with a quality Jewish education that they in turn can associate with the memory of Bella Nussbaum; a beloved wife, mother and grandmother.

J O A N N E F R I S C H ’ 99 We recently sat down with Joanne Frisch ’99, of CS&P Architects Inc., and Project Manager of the expansion of TanenbaumCHAT’s Wallenberg campus.
When did you realize that you wanted to pursue a degree in architecture? I decided to be an architect on Career Day in Grade 11 at CHAT. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I knew my favorite subjects were math and art. What were your academic pursuits after you graduated from CHAT? I did a Bachelor of Science, Architecture degree at McGill and a Master of Architecture degree at the University of Illinois. During these two programs I had the opportunity to study abroad in Australia and Spain. What is your favourite CHAT memory? Grade 12 Talmud. Studying with friends for multiple days well into the nights – chevrutah style was great. Our hard core studying was balanced by Friday classes when our teacher, Rav Gurvitz, would bring in his stereo for impromptu singing sessions. I still sing those songs with friends sometimes and reminisce. As a graduate of the school, do you have a different sense of pride working on the Guttman Family Science Wing than for other projects? I have a great appreciation for the dedication and hard work that occurs behind the scenes to create a strong and intimate community in most projects. Here though, it’s a unique feeling to actually be a part of the community. What has been your biggest challenge with this project? One challenge has been creating an environment that meets the current needs of the school, while planning for the future. Technology, curriculum and teaching models are evolving rapidly. We have to respond with design so that kids will be interested to learn and explore both in class and outside of class.

CHAT Keep your ear to the ground for up-and-coming band Of Gentlemen and Cowards. Not only are they a truly talented pop-rock band, but two of the four band members are TanenbaumCHAT’s very own Simon Edwards ’09 and Jake Warren ’09. Performing all over the Hamilton music scene, these current McMaster students won a contest hosted by Redbull Soundstage beating out of 1200 applicants from across North America. The grand prize was a performance on the Late Show with David Letterman. In front of a stadium of over a thousand people, Evan Malach ’03, competed against 29 other artists from around the world to win the 2012 Global Jewish Singing Contest – a contest that was designed to reconnect contestants to their Jewish roots through music. Evan not only won a monetary prize, but will be recording a duet with renowned Israeli singer, Dudu Fisher, and will be on a global tour of Jewish venues where he will perform. I will be completing my term as President of TanenbaumCHAT at this year’s Annual General Meeting. It has been a rewarding, stimulating and challenging experience – and I have treasured every moment. I became involved with the Board when my son started at the school in 2004, and have had the privilege of serving on the Board and many different committees since then. My term ends as my youngest child graduates from TanenbaumCHAT this spring. The past year has been extraordinarily busy for the lay leadership at our school. It has been a honour to work with such a committed and dedicated Board of Directors whose wisdom and vision have been invaluable. We broke ground on the Guttman Family Science wing last spring, and are fulfilling the long awaited dream for state of the art science facilities at Wallenberg campus. Our Together Campaign Committee is continuing to work very hard to raise the remaining funds. The Search Committee is also currently very involved in the process of searching for a new Head of School to lead TanenbaumCHAT into the future. We could not achieve our goals without the involvement and contributions of so many people to different aspects of school life – our students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, lay leadership and all of our volunteers. As my term comes to an end, I would like to acknowledge everyone involved with TanenbaumCHAT. A school’s reputation is built upon the success of its students. Our students go on to find success and become leaders all over the world. We are committed to securing the future of superior Jewish high school education in Toronto.

A fresh, new marketing campaign, profiling the slogan “I am TanenbaumCHAT” opened the 2011/12 school year. This slogan was showcased on bus shelters, T-shirts, banners and our revamped website. We promoted our brand on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to show the many facets of the TanenbaumCHAT Experience. We had another stellar year of outstanding success in so many areas, from the Shabbaton program to music and athletics. The accomplishments of our students and the staff are unparalleled and the list goes on and on. We were privileged to have two inspirational speakers address us, Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, Chief Rabbi of England, and Rabbi Donniel Hartman, President of the Shalom Harman Institute in Jerusalem, who spoke about the “Future of Judaism” as the Ronald and Aviva Heller memorial lecturer. Much of our effort this year was focused on ensuring the construction of the new Guttman Family Science Wing on the Wallenberg Campus could commence at the end of the school year. In order to meet this goal, we had to raise $7.5M, finalize the architectural drawings, contract a project manager and secure building permits from the City of Toronto. Thanks to the efforts of many people, all targets were met and construction got underway as planned when the school year drew to a close in June. Paul Shaviv took his leave in June. Over 5,700 Generation Y students, born to baby boomers between 1981 and 1997, were directly impacted by his leadership and vision during the 14 years he served as Director of Education. I am confident that under the exemplary leadership of our Campus Principals Helen Fox and Jonathan Levy, Director of Jewish Studies Sam Kapustin, Director of Advancement Frances Bigman, Board President Cecile Zaifman and Board Chair Les Fluxgold, the school will continue to go from strength to strength.

By identifying, recruiting and stewarding human and financial means we are ensuring that TanenbaumCHAT has all the resources required to prepare our students for a lifetime of individual accomplishment, Jewish commitment and community leadership. This school year marked the evolution of the Development Office into a 21st century Advancement Office, integrating the school’s admission, development and marketing/ communications programs. The advancement team worked tirelessly to successfully integrate these strategic functions. The result was an amazing year launching an exciting new recruitment campaign, two outstanding editions of the CHATTER, highly professional e-newsletters and collateral campaign materials, all wrapped up in a 10,000 square foot tent at the groundbreaking for the new Guttman Family Science Wing. It was a heady celebration – the school had raised $7.6 million dollars!
And there was more! As donors were identified and cultivated for the new science wing – even more support for the school was discovered, leading to more exciting enhancements in other areas of school life. The Together Campaign seemed to create a new momentum of exciting redevelopment. Nearly $300,000 additional dollars were raised for new projects including significant improvements to the TCW drama studio and discussions for the same at TCK; a new Jewish Studies Remediation Centre and an interim Beit Midrash for the Wallenberg campus; enhancements to the TCW Art Studio and upgraded technology at the Kimel Centre. Most exciting for TCK students – 10 new sofas throughout the campus for their exclusive use. The TanenbaumCHAT Advancement Office understands that the recruitment of students and the recruitment of donors provide the two streams of revenue crucial to fiscal stability and school viability—hard income (tuition and fees) and soft income (donations). We are thrilled that we have adopted this overarching, analytical framework that will lead us to increased recruitment and fundraising success in the future.

FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS: YEAR ENDING JUNE 2012 In February 2011, TanenbaumCHAT’s Budget and Finance committee set a tuition fee of $21,500 for the 2011/12 school year including a capital levy of $800. For the year ending June 30, 2012, the school met its breakeven target, netting a surplus of $155,600, representing less than 1% of revenues, after provision was made for future retirement gratuities. In the prior year, the tuition fee of $20,100 returned

a surplus of $211,400, also representing less than 1% of revenues. Although a drop in enrolment of 5% had been predicted, the school experienced an unprecedented retention rate of 96%. This resulted in total enrolment 3% lower (45 fewer students) than 2011. In the prior year enrolment also declined by 3% (42 fewer students) compared to 2010.

OUR GRADUATES LEAVE WITH A SENS E OF PURPOSE AND A BELIEF THAT THEY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD TanenbaumCHAT is a community of inclusion where students and faculty work together in order to reach each student’s greatest potential. Through participation in activities inside and outside the classroom, students learn, through collaboration, the critical thinking and problem-solving life skills that are so critical to success. Multiple opportunities are made available to provide students with a chance to pursue their passions or explore new ones. The myriad of options includes clubs, committees, theatre, film and music festivals, talent show, Shabbatonim, philanthropic activities, athletics, yearbook, academic competitions and entrepreneurial activities. Through these avenues students learn to assume leadership roles and create programming as well as interact with teachers and students of various grades. In 2011/12 the Education Committee spent the year looking at how the TanenbaumCHAT Experience shapes the whole child. Faculty members who provide the students

with their career and civics curriculum, guidance, athletics, student services and Judaic programming activities were all invited to present. The facilitators provided insight into the educational philosophy behind the programs, and clearly articulated the goals and expected outcomes of each. What was highlighted was the nurturing environment wherein staff built ongoing relationships with students in order to foster the tools for self-empowerment and self-advocacy for each student. The positive results produced through the support, guidance and encouragement of the TanenbaumCHAT staff are evident throughout the school year. The impact of the TanenbaumCHAT Experience is the building of character, Jewish identity and a sense of belonging that our students carry with them into adulthood. With their individual skills and values strengthened during their four years at TanenbaumCHAT, our graduates leave with a sense of purpose and a belief that they can make a difference in the world.

LIFE IN SCHOOLS is a complicated and varied phenomenon: complicated because so many different factors contribute to educational success, and varied, because it is often difficult to identify and categorize them. Those who may not know, or perhaps never knew, what really transpires in schools tend to imagine that it’s only about students sitting in a classroom with teachers up front transmitting information. If that stereotype was ever true, it is certainly no longer the case. The evolving role of the teacher, sometimes described as “from the sage on the stage to the guide on the side”, coupled with technology and a renewed appreciation of the student as an active partner in the learning process, all belie this imperfect picture present in the minds of many. Perhaps we appreciate today more than in the past that just as we must relate to the whole child, we must similarly relate to the whole environment. At TanenbaumCHAT, it is not only reflected in the myriad of extra-curricular, student activities on offer, but also in a number of recent additions that might be easily, and mistakenly, overlooked, despite the significance of their impact.
