Taher Asad-Bakhtiari
KILIM All Asad-Bakthiari kilims are hand-made in Iran by Turkicspeaking, semi-settled nomads using 100% natural and vegetable-died wools. Each kilim requires approximately four to five months to produce, depending on the size. The designer innovated in the fabrication process with a polyurethane weaving together with wool. The designs are limited to essential geometrical shapes, enhancing the novelty of the weave and mix of materials to speak out. Stimulated by this new approach, the weavers themselves have come to re-think their craft and re-engage with it. Thus often, the weavers own input will figure discretely in the carpet - whether in a smart approach to a weaving dilemma or the personal handling of a particular design. His revolutionary construction technique was developed to reveal the skeleton of the weave. By exposing the war (the set of lengthwise yarns) and leaving out the weft (the yarns that are woven across), Taher has juxtaposed the delicate, lace-like textures of the wrap and the solidness of the weave. “In places, the Kilims become see-through,” he says, “letting the floor appear beneath”. The design and geometric triangular shapes stem from the innovative weaving approach. Emphasising the immediate impact of his creation, Taher points out several benefits that have emerged. “Creating my Kilims, the weavers have become to rethink their craft and re-engage with it. In this way, the weavers’ own input will figure discreetly in the carpet - It’s a perfect, fundamental reward for their crafts”. Limiting the complexity of the designs has allowed the weave and mix materials to speak out witch, for Taher, is fundamental to reviving the original hand-weaving traditions. This experimental route has allowed the idea of the Kilim to expand and diversify. Each piece retains its individuality and status as an art piece while being modern and functional, and imbued with 21st-century aesthetics.

BARRELS Taher Asad-Bakhtiari’s barrels have been taken from a familiar, every-day object from Tehran’s urban landscape. The unique form and color of each barrel that pepper the streets of Tehran, is naturally derived from the purpose they may have once served. They are also acting as the substitute of the facade of the building that was once there and has been now wiped off from the collective memory. The barrels will, likewise, be removed from the front of the semi-finished building and give way to the new walls. Taher Asad-Bakhtiari has taken recovered some of the barrels and resized them for the interior of the home to serve both as a reminder of what once was and as a design object.

Born in Tehran, Iran in 1982, Taher currently lives between Tehran, Dubai and New York. Taher is a self-taught designer motivated to imagine objects, textiles and experiences. To date, he has created interiors, events, and lifestyle artifacts. His latest project is an electrifying take on modern kilim. After Multimedia and Management studies between Canada and Switzerland and inspired by art from a young age, he opened a creative agency in Tehran, later expanding it to New York City. Juggling between various creative disciplines with particular interest in architecture, design and interiors, he started to self-produce limited edition objects.
