MAJORS & MINORS MARINE BIOLOGY

LEADING THE FIELD ON EVERY FRONT

LICENSE OPTION AVAILABLE

Offers broad preparation in general biology and life sciences emphasizing hands-on experiences with plants and animals in marine environments. Students study everything from viruses to whales, from molecular biology to ecology.

MARINE FISHERIES

Provides educational and hands-on experiences in science-based conservation and management for sustainable fisheries. Students learn fishery techniques, management, mariculture and aquatic animal health.

MARINE SCIENCES

LICENSE OPTION AVAILABLE

Offers academic instruction in natural sciences (chemical, physical and geological oceanography) with emphasis on ocean and global processes, including climate systems. Students study how the marine environment evolves from time scales of seconds to millions of years, from single elements in the water, to how the ocean regulates the climate system and reacts to human activities. Instruction is complemented by fieldwork and hands-on experiences.

COASTAL ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE & SOCIETY

Provides expertise in multidisciplinary environmental sciences with emphasis on policy, economics, conservation and social issues related to the development and management of marine and coastal resources.

MARITIME BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

Provides rigorous preparation in business in the key areas of accounting, finance, marketing, corporate law and economics, as well as advanced courses in logistics, cybersecurity, brokerage and chartering, organizational behavior, transportation economics, and port and terminal operations.

MARINE TRANSPORTATION

LICENSE OPTION REQUIRED

Combines studies in international trade and transportation with instruction and training in maritime disciplines to provide a U.S. Maritime Service Cadet with a broad-based education, and the qualifications for the Third Mate’s License (Oceans Unlimited).

MARINE ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

LICENSE OPTION AVAILABLE

Provides applied knowledge in mechanical and electrical engineering fundamentals, which are reinforced by practical machine shop experience, welding and laboratory experiences.

A new specialty in multidisciplinary engineering and technology is available as of Fall 2020. Students may choose to pursue the Third Assistant Engineering License (Steam and/or Motor Vessels, Unlimited).

UNIVERSITY STUDIES, WITH CONCENTRATIONS IN Oceans & One Health

Designed to explore the intersection between animal, human and environmental health. Provides coursework needed for students interested in entering professional programs after graduation, including medical, dental and veterinary school or public health.

Tourism & Coastal Community Development

Applied program directed at offering multidisciplinary knowledge to assist coastal communities progress economically while maintaining sound ecological and environmental practices. This program can be complemented with a minor in business tailored specifically to the service and tourism industry.

Marine Environmental Law & Policy

Focuses on business law, admiralty law and environmental law, as well as environmental ethics and politics of energy and the environment. This program is ideal for students interested in entering professional programs in law and policy.

MARITIME STUDIES

Focuses on history, archaeology, literature and politics of maritime peoples and cultures from ancient times to the present.

Students gain hands-on experiences on ships, with artifact conservation and curation, and develop a portfolio of materials.

OFFERED BY TAMU COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AT GALVESTON Ocean Engineering

Combines civil, mechanical and electrical engineering with naval architecture and applied oceanography. Students learn to design and work with systems that must operate in the ocean, such as offshore oil rigs, subsea pipelines and seawalls.

Interdisciplinary Engineering

Combines education in engineering and marine sciences to prepare students to solve engineering problems while taking into account the unique challenges associated with the marine environment. Students develop a unique skill set not traditionally associated with engineering.

Multidisciplinary Engineering Technology

Contains an emphasis in marine mechatronics, a multidisciplinary field that includes a combination of electrical, mechanical, communications, control and marine engineering technology topics. Students interested in wireless communications, automation, instrumentation and/or robotics will gain hands-on experience with a focus on marine electronic systems.

TEXAS A&M MARITIME ACADEMY License Option

Offers the unique opportunity to train as a mariner while at sea and be eligible for either the Third Mate’s License (Oceans Unlimited) or the Third Assistant Engineer License (Steam and/or Motor Vessels, Unlimited).

NROTC

Provides skills and eligibility for students interested in gaining an officer’s commission in the U.S. Navy.

Drill & Ceremonies

Develops leadership skills with a regimented lifestyle without the commitment of serving in the U.S. Navy or earning the Third Mate’s license.
