Shawn Flanagan

Director of Track & Field/Head Cross Country Coach Wisconsin-Platteville (1977) Tenth Year Islander Director of Track and Field and Head Cross Country Coach Shawn Flanagan enters his 30th year of NCAA Division I Coaching. During that span, athletes he has coached have competed at the Olympic Games, the World Championships, the Commonwealth Games, as well as at the NCAA Championships. At the NCAA Championship, he has coached three National Champions, 19 All Americans and over 60 national qualifiers. He has been at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi since the inception of the program in 2000. During 10 years of piloting the Islanders, he has brought the teams to national prominence by not just qualifying athletes to the national championships but having them bring

home victories. In 2006, Shadrack Songok became the first Islander national champion in any sport winning the 10,000-meter crown. He followed that up in 2007 by winning the indoor 5,000-meter title and then defended his 10,000 title outdoors in 2008. During Flanagan’s tenure the Islander’s have been a force to be reckoned with in cross country. In the nine times Islander cross country squads have competed for a conference title they have brought home 10 of them; three on the mens side and seven on the women’s side. The seven out of nine conference titles on the women’s is the best record of any Division I cross country team in the state of Texas. In 2009, the women’s cross country

team won their third Southland title in a row and were also honored as an Academic All-American team with a 3.28 GPA. Additionally, individual conference champion Anne Ronoh made her second consecutive trip to the NCAA Cross Country Nationals. Excellence is no stranger to Flanagan. In his prior coaching stops at Texas and UTSA there have been many honors. During his three years at Texas (1997-99), Flanagan was the men’s distance and cross country coach, the track team won three Big 12 Conference track titles and had second and fifth place team finishes at the National Outdoor Championship meet. During his 16 years at UTSA, (1981-

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Track & Field 1996), his teams won a total of 19 conference titles. As he has don with the Islanders, he brought the Roadrunner’s from inception in 1981 to national prominence by the time he left in 1996. Back in his day, Flanagan was a fierce competitor with a high school state meet bronze in the 2-mile run in 1973, Collegiate National meet finishes of 42nd, 36th, 33th and 18th in cross country and a 6th-place finish in track. The highlight of his athletic career was qualifying for the 1980 US Olympic Trials in the marathon. He was inducted into his alma mater, University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. He was named an Outstanding Alumnus at UW-Platteville in 1992. Flanagan has a B.S. from University of Wisconsin Platteville in 1977 and a Masters Degree from UTSA in 1982. He served in the US Army from 1978 to 1982 where he achieved the rank of Captain. He is married to Beverly Johnson and they have one child. Flanagan’s coaching philosophy is simple. “First find an athlete with a talent for running, encourage them, allow them to have success, treat them with respect, keep them healthy and then good things happen. There is nothing complicated about training distance runners. If they keep their eyes on the prize, work hard and intelligently, they will get better. That formula has been working for 30 years and there is no reason that it won’t continue to work.”

J.R. Pulido Graduate Assistant Second Season

Former Texas A&M-Corpus Christi distance standout, J.R. Pulido is in his second season with the Islanders as a graduate assistant. He also helped with the cross country teams this past fall. Pulido earned multiple All-Southland Conference honors in both cross country and track. As a senior, he placed fifth at the SLC Cross Country Championship meet. He was the first Islander to earn all-region honors in cross country with a 22nd-place finish in 2005 after placing second at the independent championship. A native of Columbus, Pulido graduated wtih a degree in kinesiology.

Shadrack Songok Graduate Assistant First Season

Three-time national champion Shadrack Songok returns to the Islander family this season as a graduate assistant. Songok won a national title indoors in the 5,000-meter run and won a pair of national titles in the 10,000-meter run. He finished his Islander career as a 6-time All-American and as the Islander record holder in multiple events. He graduated from A&M-Corpus Christi in the spring of 2008 with a degree in chemistry. Last fall, he began his masters at Texas A&M while he finished his eligibilty earning All-America honors in cross country and led the Aggie team to an NCAA Championship appearance.

Philemon Tanui Graduate Assistant First Season

Philemon Tanui begins his first season as a graduate assistant for the Islanders after spending two seasons on the coaching staff at his alma mater Wyoming. Tanui was a five-time All-Mountain West Conference performer, twice during the outdoor season in his patented event of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, once during the indoor season and twice while running cross country. Randy Bungard Head Coach Virginia Tech (1987) Second Year

Randy Bungard enters his second year as head coach on the Island University. He spent the previous 11 seasons at Virginia of the Atlantic Coast Conference as head coach. He also has made coaching stops at Texas, Clemson, and East Tennessee State. “We are very fortunate to get a coach of Randy’s caliber to come here,” said Flanagan, who worked briefly with Bungard on the Longhorns’ staff. “He is a tremendous coach in the sprints, jumps and the long and short hurdles. Randy built Virginia into one of the top teams in the ACC during his tenure there and I think he can help provide stability and take us to the next level.” Bungard is excited about the opportunity before him and eager to build upon the foundation left by former coach Brent Ericksen. “I am very excited to join the Texas A&MCorpus Christi family,” said Bungard. “I’ve known and respected Shawn for 12 years and I look forward to working with him in building this track and field program to the level that I believe it can be.” In his final season as head coach at UVA, Bungard built the program into contender in the ACC. In his last season, the Cavaliers placed second in both men’s and women’s

track at the prestigious ECAC/IC4A meet. Four athletes earned All-American honors including Yemi Ayeni, who placed second in the country, in the discus. Five competitors were named All-East Region performers. A total of six athletes won ACC titles with 22 being named All-ACC. In his tenure, the cross country and track program at Virginia produced 33 AllAmericans, two USATF national champions, 53 NCAA qualifiers, 34 Atlantic Coast Conference champions and 180 All-ACC performers. During the 2006-07 academic year, Virginia was represented at the NCAA Championships in men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field. UVA athletes earned 10 All-America and 17 AllACC honors that year. Bungard’s teams also were successful in the classroom with 19 teams being named USTFCCAA Academic Teams. Individually, Bungard was named the Southeast Region and ACC Coach of the Year for men’s track and field in 2001. He coached at least one All-American in each of his first 10 seasons with the Cavaliers. Throughout his career, the Islander mentor has had a role in developing 12 NCAA champions, 94 All-Americans, over 100

conference champions, and nearly 300 allconference performers. Prior to his work at UVA, Bungard, who had developed a background in many specialties including the middle distance/ distance area, throws, jumps, sprints and hurdles, spent two years at Texas. Bungard has personally coached two NCAA Champions. He first coached Angie Barker of ETSU to a national title in the indoor shot put in 1988, and in 1997 mentored Dana Riley to a national crown in the 800m. He has also guided Nicole Devonish of Texas in the long jump and Clemson’s Kim Graham in the 200 in 1992 to runner-up finishes at the NCAA Championship. “I first saw what Randy was capable of when we coached together briefly at Texas,” said Flanagan. A native of Virginia, Bungard’s coaching career began shortly after earning his bachelor’s degree in education with an emphasis in physical education from Virginia Tech in 1987. He was a three-time All-Metro Conference decathlete honoree in his career. Bungard continued his education at East Tennessee State, where he earned his master’s degree in education with an emphasis in exercise physiology in 1988.

Islanders Look to Continue Climb in Southland Conference

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track and field teams look to continue to make strides in the Southland Conference this season. The Islanders will mix experience and young talent in their attempt to rise among the best in the conference. Last year, the women were fifth at the outdoor championships scoring 96 points, Kassandrea Son, who was the conference highpoint scorer at the conference outdoor championship contributed 29.5 points and will be counted on again. “To match or exceed the 60 points scored last year the distance crew led by seniors Meghan Lemke, Anne Ronoh, and Faith Barlow have to score a significant number of points,” said director of track and field Shawn Flanagan. “We will aslo need Kassandrea to continue the success she has had the first two seasons at the conference meet.” Junior distance runners Courtney Johnson, Caitlin Arambula and Sarah De Los Santos all made major contributions last year and they need to again. Also looking to be counted on will be Alex Bullard, Daniela Prado and Kristine Torres as well. The health of Molly Bishop, and Emily Jones and Prado is something to keep an eye on also for production. Rounding out the distance side are a trio of newcomers BreAnna Briggs, Melissa Jones, and Shelby Nichols will be counted on to help score points. Son won’t be able to do it all on her own and needs help from the Islanders sprint/ h u r d l e / jump athletes such as Tye’sha

5

McFarlin, Cadeen James, Kaleigh Frazier and newcomers Jasmine Oyewumi, Macy Osburn, Cara Patterson, Jessica Green plus Jennifer Hernandez. Like the women’s side, the men will look for points from their distance runners who are led by Ari Perez and Kirk Dalheim. In addition Scott Vance, Patrick Kimeli, Eloy Zertuche, Daniel Barlow, Curtis Patton and David Wells will be counted on to score. Cody Lemke, Jacob Abrego, Tito Torres and Jordan Valle need to stay healthy to help the team. “The 800 needs to be a big event for us with Grant Bassford leading Clint Pollack, Ryan McNutt and

A n d r e w Falcon into the scoring column,” added Flanagan. Te x a s A&M-Corpus Christi will have a young group of jumpers/ sprinters/ hurdlers with Roger De La Cruz, Ozzie Garcia, Dallas Crain and Matt Youngblood emerging as the strongest scoring possibilities. Other than Garcia the entire group is new to the Island. Quency Obeng, Anthony Yates, Jamal McBride, Lupe Martinez, Cody Hooper, Eric Alanis, Eric July, Stephen Bryce Koenig, Huggins Phiri and Ross Williams have the ability to help in the sprints and hurdles but will need to continue improving to help the team. “Of the 22 men on the team this season 19 are either freshman or newcomers,” said Randy Bungard. “With this much youth it is hard to know what to expect.”

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi... ...Athletic director Tim Fitzpatrick Timothy Fitzpatrick was named the third athletic director in the history of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi athletic department on Wednesday, Aug. 19 after spending the past four seasons in a senior leadership role in the Indiana University athletic department. He fills the position that had been vacated since 2008. Prior to joining the Islanders, Fitzpatrick had served since January 2005 as the senior associate athletic director at Indiana. With the Hoosiers, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football and women’s basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, department website, and publications. During his tenure, he helped the department negotiate a $21,000,000 contract with Adidas and worked extensively with Learfield Sports/IU Sports Properties and the Big Ten Network, who brought a combined $9,000,000 in revenue to the program each year. He also saw his area help generate $1,971,183 in ticket sales revenue in excess of budgeted projections, a 15-percent improvement. Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising effort that saw Army’s donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and funds grow from $500,000 to $1.8 million. He also cultivated the Army Sports Network from two radio stations to 18, including 50,000-watt WEPN-AM 1050 in New York City. During his tenure at West Point, corporate sponsorship revenue jumped from $250,000 to $920,000. Fitzpatrick arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts. Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving. Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA

Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue. He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication efforts. Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92. A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982. Tim is married to Kerry Marks, and they have a son, James.
