Doc Asia screenings turn an eye towards Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar. The two long and seven shorter documentaries show us interesting portrays, life overlapping art and stories about otherness. Madam Phung’s Last Journey takes the viewer on a year-long journey around the outbacks of Vietnam. Along with the head of the pack madam Phung, on this tour are a group of performing artists consisting of uneducated and paperless transvestites, a merry-go-round and a train ride. Jazz in love, on the other hand, takes us deep into the heart of a young Filipino to tell us an intimate story about love and the hardships of loving beyond language barriers and prejudice. Before the film we will see a Thai short film Consider, starring a transgendered teenager Tay. Life meets art in the Myanmar screening. Behind the Screen is a story of a family and a review of the recent history of Myanmar film, oozing with the glamour of the olden days. Old monochrome photos set the tempo of The Old Photographer, a film about a 90-year-old photographer, living in Yangon, in a 100-year-old photo studio founded by his father. The River, Our Ayeyrwaddy is also striving to explain life through art, as the country’s largest river is in danger because of an international hydroelectric power plant project. Short films in Sideways screening are connected by the theme of otherness. Children of Kubu takes place in a jungle in West Sumatra, where the western influence is slowly creeping up on the traditional way of life. The Vietnamese We Got Married is a simple documentary about the daily life, the fights and the makeups, of a married couple with Down syndrome. Questions of race and identity are being raised in a Cambodian film Where I Go, starring a brave young man in search of his father.
Doc Aasia -näytökset suuntaavat katseen Indonesiaan, Filippiineille, Vietnamiin, Thaimaahan, Kambodzaan sekä Myanmariin. Kahdessa pitkässä ja seitsemässä lyhyessä dokumentissa nähdään kiinnostavia muotokuvia, taiteen ja elämän limittymiä sekä tarinoita toiseudesta. Madam Phung’s Last Journey vie katsojansa vuoden kestävälle matkalle ympäri Vietnamin takamaita. Seurueen tirehtöörinä toimivan rouva Phungin mukana mantuja kiertää kouluttamattomista ja paperittomista transvestiiteista koostuva esiintyjäkaarti, karuselli ja junarata. Erään filippiiniläisnuorukaisen sydämenasioita valottava Jazz in Love on intiimi tarina rakastamisesta ja sen vaikeudesta, yli kielirajojen ja ennakkoluulojen. Elokuvan alkukuvana katsellaan thaimaalainen Consider, jonka pääosassa on transsukupuolinen teini-ikäinen Tay. Myanmar-näytöksessä taide ja elämä risteytyvät. Behind the Screen on entisaikain glamouria tihkuva katsaus myanmarilaisen elokuvan lähihistoriaan ja erään perheen tarinaan. Vanhojen mustavalkokuvien rytmittämä The Old Photographer esittelee 90-vuotiaan valokuvaajamiehen, joka asuu isänsä sata vuotta sitten perustamassa valokuvastudiossa Yangonissa. Elämää pyritään selittämään taiteen keinoin myös elokuvassa The River, Our Ayeyrwaddy, jossa maan suurinta jokea ja merkittävää kulkuväylää uhkaa kansainvälinen vesivoimalaprojekti. Sivupoluilla-näytöksen lyhytdokumentteja yhdistää toiseuden teema. Children of Kubu sijoittuu länsisumatralaiseen viidakkoon, jossa perinteinen elämänmeno on alkanut saada länsimaisia sävyjä. Vietnamilainen We Got Married on koruton dokumentti down-avioparin arjesta riitoineen, sopimisineen päivineen. Rotu- ja identiteettikysymyksiä pohdiskellaan kambodzalaiselokuvassa Where I Go, jonka pääosassa nähdään isäänsä etsivä urhea nuorukainen. Johanna Salmela
