IMPACT REPORT

A NOTE FROM OUR CEO

If there is something that the last several years has taught us, it is that resiliency and caring for our mental health is key to navigating these uncertain times. Through a pandemic and recovery, the Tampa Bay region has certainly seen a lot. Tampa is one of the fastest growing metro areas in the country, and Time Magazine recently named our city among “The World’s Greatest Places of 2023.”

Tampa Bay Thrives has grown in step with our region, strengthening our partnerships with the launch of new programming and convening community leaders around the topics of navigation and workforce development. In the process, we have helped over 2,000 people get connected to help for their mental health. Our cause has been championed by community heroes like Pat Maroon, the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey player who catapulted us into a national media conversation about using words thoughtfully and with kind intent. And yet, despite this momentum, there is still much more work to do.

Research we completed this year revealed stigma as a barrier for many people in getting help. In response, we are excited to launch our first big awareness campaign,

IYKYK HIGHLIGHT

“I was assaulted while at college in Tallahassee. My dad brought me home so my family could care for me but I slipped into a year-long battle with extreme depression as a result of the trauma. Thankfully, my mom helped me find a therapist to help me heal. Often times people are wearing masks. You don’t know what battles they are facing. As you look at my picture here, I look happy

Colony Reeves is a Real Estate Agent on Netflix's Selling Tampa, as well as one of our TBT mental health ambassadors. Here is her story of perseverance in the face of mental health struggles.

“If you know, you know” (IYKYK) to get to the heart of this issue. #IYKYK builds upon a social media trend that highlights shared or lived experiences and uplifts real-life stories of recovery, hope, and healing. The campaign amplifies the many inspiring voices of those that have, and continue to, utilize a variety of approaches to managing their mental health, and encourage others to start that same journey.

This work is complex and requires all of us to make a meaningful difference. In the next year, we are expanding our programs geographically and demographically to increase the number of individuals we reach, including more focus on youth. Mental Health is vital to our ability to thrive; mental health is health. Thank you for your continued support in our work. The mental health of our community depends on supporters like you.

With deep appreciation,

and carefree. But I’m not. This was one of the lowest periods of my life. I still go to therapy monthly and I’m at a great place in my life. I always make a point to check in with my friends and to talk openly about mental health. Mental health isn’t often spoken about in the black community but I hope to change that by normalizing conversations around mental health — in every community.”

BH Workforce Task Force

Florida ranks 42nd in mental health workforce availability, with only 19% of the needed counselors and therapists to support the population’s needs. The talent crunch has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, causing behavioral healthcare workers to either leave the profession or work for telehealth and technology companies. Tampa Bay Thrives launched a task force to combat the crisis, focusing on the development of behavioral health career pathways, bolstering recruitment and retention, and using data to strategize. The task force comprises stakeholders from healthcare, education, business, and community sectors.

OUR IMPACT

#IYKYK

Research indicates that open dialogue and sharing personal experiences are powerful stigma combatants. Our "If You Know, You Know" (IYKYK) initiative amplifies these narratives from individuals on mental health journeys or in support roles, fostering conversation and destigmatization around seeking mental health assistance.

•Video highlighting 4 stories has reached over 10,000 people and has been shared over 300 times across our social media platforms.

•Gathered over 20 stories from Tampa Bay community members.

•Companies such as The Laker, BizJorunals, WFLA, WTSP, TGH, Tampa Bay Chamber, Suncoast Surfrider Foundation, and BayCare have shared the campaign.

Green Lights To Drive Awareness

IYKYK

In May, the City of Tampa illuminated city bridges and landmarks in green, the official color of mental health awareness month. Florida Blue also joined in the movement by lighting up their office in South Tampa. A collaborative effort from Hillsborough, Manatee, and Pinellas county governments delivered the Sunshine Skyway Bridge lit in green for a whole week.
