GASPARILLA MUSIC FESTIVAL ROCKS TAMPA one founder shares about the growing music festival

hough not a musician, one of Grymes Cannon's most poignant memories involves dancing to ballroom music with his grandmother. His first concert, Cyndi Lauper, with his childhood babysitter, is a close second. United by deep passion for Tampa, education, and arts and culture, and education, Grymes and other founding members (now nicknamed the Ring of Fire) wrote their ideas for a Gasparilla Music Festival on a cocktail napkin, pitched them to locals, and secured seed money to support execution of the vision. Since 2011, GMF has grown exponentially—securing headliners like The Roots and The Avett Brothers. GMF is about more than big name acts, though. The festival is the main arm of the Gasparilla Music Foundation, a Florida 501(c)-3 non-profit corporation whose aims include supporting local musicians, food, and music education: “We are doing all of this for Tampa Bay,” Grymes says. Through its Recycled Tunes program, the Foundation supports music education in Tampa schools, especially in Title 1 schools such as Crestwood Elementary, which had only 1 guitar for every 4 of the 38+ guitar students until GMF stepped in. Success stories include a student who received an instrument from Recycled Tunes and is now on his way with a trumpet scholarship to be the first person from his family to attend college. Another student who got her start with GMF recently played at Madison Square Garden. “We’re focused on keeping a sustainable music festival in Tampa, but everything we do is driven by determination to do the best we can from a community standpoint,” Grymes explains. To date, GMF’s local arm has made over 350 paid gigs a reality for musicians. Grymes—whose first date with his wife was at GMF—is supportive of making the festival a family affair because it provides a sense of camaraderie, allows kids to interact with instruments, and gets everyone in touch with arts and culture. For many kids, GMF is their first concert experience. “Some ride bikes. Some [parents] bring the kids during the day and come back without kids at night,” Grymes says. “It’s unreal to see the kids illuminate.” GMF’s leadership is intent on keeping tickets affordable. All board members are volunteers and Higher Ground memberships support both low-ticket prices and the Recycled Tunes program. Your volunteer efforts can help. In exchange for a four-hour shift, festival volunteers receive a free ticket to GMF. There’s a volunteer party, and several volunteers have worked their way up to volunteer captain status, eventually becoming Board Members. GMF recognizes the importance of reciprocity: GMF relies on volunteer efforts and GMF leadership supports local organizations. “We’re always at Onbikes and the Gasparilla Distance Classic. We’re purposeful in cheering on our community,” Grymes says. “From the festival, to the production arm, and the Recycled Tunes program, GMF is a great success story.” I can’t imagine a world without music. I’m thankful GMF is committed to putting great live music on the local stage while helping Tampa’s kids receive exceptional music education. ebruary means love on the brain, but Valentine’s Day is reason to focus on more than romantic love. Love between children and grandparents is just as celebration-worthy. Childhood experiences with my grandparents influenced the woman I am. From my abuelo’s strong work ethic to my abuela’s appreciation for manicures, I am because of them. Raising children takes a village, and Marisa Torres, mother of two, feels blessed that her village is strong, with plenty of involvement from her retired in-laws and her parents—her mom helped twice a week when Torres’ kids were younger. To this day, Melina, the Torres’ 11-year-old daughter, frequently asks her grandparents to pick her up from school. “We encourage it because we want our kids to have any amount of love that’s bestowed on them,” Torres says. Lauren Chamberlain, who co-owns Pure Barre studios with her mom, is thankful for how present both sets of grandparents are despite still working. “Our kids are blessed with the dynamics the families have. All grandparents help with childcare and even taking the kids to doctors,” says Chamberlain, whose dad recently watched the kids so that just she and her mom, Elle, could go to dinner. Just as we need alone time with our romantic partners, it’s important kids spend time with just the grandparents. Growing up, the Torres’ spent significant time with their grandparents. “Like mine, Mike’s parents worked lots and our grandparents played large roles in raising us,” Marisa explains. She recognizes staying back and giving children time alone with the grandparents helps fill some of the shortcomings she identifies as a mother: “They get nurturing from them that we don’t give. They need that.” The time alone also nurtures certain dispositions. “Melina is a people person—the light of the room. She gets that from being with Mike’s mom and my dad.” Mason, the Torres’ 13-year-old son, is quiet and pensive. Spending time with Marisa’s dad during a recent boys’ trip provided Mason grandfatherly attention about all he did well: “He shone during that trip.” Chamberlain, who’s always been close with her parents, loves the special interactions solely between the kids and grandparents. “My parents took them to Hunsader Farms. They get in the golf cart and go to the park. It’s truly special. Elle and Steele are such well-rounded and loving children. I know the quality time they spend with both sets of grandparents is shaping the people they’re becoming.” So, this Valentine’s Day, think outside the heartshaped-chocolate box. Celebrating grandparents’ love is deliciously fitting and underscores how indispensable grandparent relationships are. Whether they’re called ita, gigi, bagda, or pop, the things grandparents share with children—wisdom, unconditional love, and valuable life lessons—hold strong. Grandma and grandpa, will you be my Valentine?

ur February 2019 cover family is the Johnson family of Tampa. Dad, Chef Chad Johnson, executive chef of Epicurean Hotel, Haven, and Élevage, and daughter Addyson graced the cover of our November 2016 issue, so we decided to follow up with the family to talk about the love of food and family.

TBP: WHAT’S ON THE MENU LATELY AT THE JOHNSON HOUSE? WHAT ARE YOU ALL CURRENTLY LOVING?

CHEF CHAD JOHNSON: Her (Addyson) new obsession is having breakfast for dinner, so we like biscuits and gravy. Usually I’ll make the biscuits, but she helps out every once in a while. She likes to use the cookie cutters and cut them in circles.

TBP: WE HEAR YOU MAKE YOUR OWN HOMEMADE SAUSAGE . TELL US ABOUT THAT.

CHEF CHAD JOHNSON: It’s pretty basic. We make homemade breakfast sausage, which is pretty simple, with ground pork, lots of fresh sage, black pepper and spices. I don’t let the kids use the meat grinder—I usually take care of that part. Addyson does like to make scrambled eggs. She has a little spatula. She’ll help stir.

TBP: WE HAVE TO ASK, WHO DOES MOST OF THE COOKING AT HOME?

CHEF CHAD JOHNSON: That’s one of the most common questions that I get and my wife gets: Does she cook or do I cook? And the answer is: I cook. Love her to death… cooking is not her thing. ASHLEY JOHNSON: I try… (laughing) CHEF CHAD JOHNSON: I don’t get to cook as much as I used to in my current role at the restaurant. While I’m always in the kitchen, I don’t always get to be the sauté cook or the grill cook, so I do a lot of meal planning on Sundays and Mondays if I’m home. I’ll cook throughout the week and get everything set up so she can finish it in the oven for the munchkins.

TBP: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO GO IN TAMPA BAY ON DATE NIGHTS? CHEF CHAD JOHNSON: When we

TBP: WHAT ARE SOME FAMILY FAVORITES?

CHEF CHAD JOHNSON: We do a little bit of

everything. Everyone in the house likes fish. Brussels sprouts are everyone’s obsession. We roast them in the oven dry until they are crunchy. They get like potato chips. ASHLEY JOHNSON: I always joke that I sort of get the credit because I warm it all up and give it to them. It’s nice for me because it makes my life so much easier during the week. CHEF CHAD JOHNSON: I do it for myself as well. When I get home from work after a 12 hour shift and it’s 9 at night, I’m just hungry and I don’t want to cook. So I’ll be the first to admit that if I can come up with something semi-homemade that tastes good that I can just throw in the oven and heat up, I’m a fan of it. CHEF CHAD JOHNSON: When it gets cold, I make gumbo. I love gumbo. I’m still a big fan of a simple roast chicken, like chopped up chicken, veggies, herbs, white wine. Literally, you throw it all in one pan and fire it up in the oven. The munchkins like pasta. We’ve been on a big pasta kick lately, so we’ll do pasta and red sauce. We’re still working on getting them to branch out. They still like a lot of their food separated, so she wants the spaghetti and the sauce but she doesn’t want the sauce on the spaghetti. We’re working on it. ASHLEY JOHNSON: It’s phases. We keep putting it in front of her and we say, take one bite and then we can move on, but just try it. She’ll try one bite. CHEF CHAD JOHNSON: I’ve had good luck with quesadillas with them and we always have cheese around. We’re big cheese geeks.

TBP: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO IN TAMPA BAY AS A FAMILY? CHEF CHAD JOHNSON: We love the Riverwalk. Just as you know, if you have small kids, sometimes just getting out of the house is the goal! ASHLEY JOHNSON: Addyson can scooter up and down the sidewalk. We even do that with friends a lot just during the day. CHEF CHAD JOHNSON: When the weather is nice, we like Honeymoon Island because it’s a little bit more quiet than the Clearwater Beach and St. Pete Beach scene for them. TBP: DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE PLACES TO GO OUT TO EAT AS A FAMILY? CHEF CHAD JOHNSON: If I get them alone, I like to take them to lunch. I think it’s hilarious to take them out to restaurants and let them order. Even if I know she’s going to say chicken fingers, it’s just funny to watch: She’s such an adult going through the process to order. But, taking them out anywhere, I always get the check when I order the food, so we can make the immediate dash. Really it’s more ambiance. “A high school credit earning SCUBA course seemed like the next step for marine science,” says Canterbury’s Director of Marine Studies Jenn LoDico. After consulting with industry pros, a plan was put in place to create an academic course that earns high school credit in science and/or physical education. Six students in the inaugural class earned their SCUBA certification learning fundamental knowledge and skills to safely dive in open water. The class’s final field trip was to the Florida Aquarium where students practiced their skills diving with ocean creatures like sharks, moray eels, barracuda, a green sea turtle, and various fish to practice their fish ID skills and complete marine life surveys while on the dive.

ebruary is Black History Month and there is so much to celebrate, from honoring civil rights heroes to learning about African American culture. But it can be difficult to find the right way to discuss slavery and the shameful parts of our country’s past with children. As parents and educators, do we avoid the subject or soften the truth to avoid tension? Absolutely not! It’s important to educate our children about America’s complicated racial history, and as adults, we need to provide a safe space for kids to learn and discuss this complex topic. At the Glazer Children’s Museum, we teach difficult topics through art and literature. One of my favorite fieldtrip lessons to teach is about the African American traditions of quilt-making and storytelling. During the lesson, we introduce students to the work of African American artist and children’s book author Faith Ringgold, discuss the inspiration for her art, and then read her book “Tar Beach.” The story follows an African American girl in New York City who learns to fly. She takes the reader on an adventure as she soars above the issues of poverty and racial discrimination that she faces, wishing for something different. This gives us a space to discuss the history of story quilts and their importance to African American culture. We explain slavery. We share the stories of how those in the Underground Railroad communicated using coded messages in quilts and how these brave individuals fought to give slaves their freedom. After reading the story, the students make their own paper story quilts to symbolize their own wishes. I am always impressed with how students respond to the story and the lesson it provides. With topics of injustice, freedom, bravery and mercy already on their mind, the students’ wishes are profound. In discussing a piece of Black History, they see the world a little differently. Maybe this world isn’t as fair as they thought, but because of this new prospective, the students are more conscious of others. Their wishes are empathetic as they begin to see the world from different points of view. They wish for things like freedom for everyone and a world without poverty. They wish that people will be nicer to each other and they wish that they themselves can find a way to make a difference. A child’s introduction to diverse literature can be a powerful tool to unpack difficult cross-cultural topics. For children of color, reading stories by diverse authors or with diverse protagonists gives them freedom to dream and imagine a different narrative for themselves. For white children, diverse books can break down stereotypes and give new perspective. Literature and art are vehicles to talk about anything, especially topics that are difficult to discuss. They can soften tension and open dialogue. So, this February, find a good book to use as a platform to celebrate, honor and discuss the good and bad of our country’s rich Black History with your child.

ost pediatricians, along with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), recommend that a child should see a pediatric dentist within 6 months of their first tooth appearing, or around their first birthday. However, according to a survey commissioned by Delta Dental Plans Association, most children don’t visit their family dentist until well after 2 years old! For many families, this is because they truly don’t know where to start when it comes to finding a dentist, or as we like to call it, a dental home. McIlwain Dental Specialists, previously McIlwain Family Dentistry, has made it our mission to make the dental office feel more like a dental home, and to make comprehensive dental care for the entire family easy and fun. Forty-one years ago, Dr. Jim McIlwain moved to Tampa with his wife and 2 children, with a vision to create a pediatric dental practice that served the community in a family atmosphere. He created that, and so much more. His daughter, Dr. Leigh Ann McIlwain, became a pediatric dentist as well, and joined the practice in 1997. She and her husband, Dr. Michael Chiaramonte, met in dental school at Tufts University, and married the weekend of their dental school graduation. After both completing residencies, they returned to Tampa. Dr. Chiaramonte joined the practice in 1997, expanding the practice

to both pediatrics and general dentistry, opening the doors of the practice to adults. Dr. Chiaramonte brought comfortable, comprehensive general dentistry to the practice and McIlwain Family Dentistry was born. In 1999, a second location was opened on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, allowing McIlwain Family Dentistry to serve more patients in a broader area.

Dr. Mike McIlwain, Dr. Jim’s nephew, became a pediatric dentist and joined the practice in 2004. A short time later, the practice expanded and moved to its current second location in Wesley Chapel. The Tampa office has remained and been updated along the way. It also has construction in store this year, with new space being configured and esthetic changes to our general practice area. We cannot wait for you to see it!

100 percent assistance is needed, and before bedtime is the most important time. If young children go to bed with clean teeth, there is very little chance of developing a cavity. When brushing, teach them "little circles" instead of scrubbing back and forth.

3 to 6 year-olds

The location in Wesley Chapel has allowed for safe, consistent sedation treatment with a team of anesthesiologists. Dr. Hector Vila and his team at Pediatric Dental Anesthesia Associates partner with the office and allow for the safest care of our patients when sedation is required. Dr. Mike is also on staff at St. Joseph's Children’s Hospital and cares for children in the OR. The practice has also offered laser treatments for both children and adults since 2010. This allows us to do conservative dental treatment comfortably, and quite often, without the use of local anesthesia. Any time we are able to conserve tooth structure, this creates a better outcome and more longevity for the tooth. The laser also allows us to complete treatments of soft tissue with less trauma and faster healing. Dr. Matt Ahrens, a board certified Orthodontist, joined the practice in 2015. Dr. Ahrens provides comprehensive orthodontic treatment for adolescents and adults at both practices. Families love

being able to receive seamless care and have potential problems with bite and eruption of teeth identified and addressed early and conveniently. In 2017, I joined the team and added to the general dentistry side of the practice. I love treating all ages, and particularly love helping our adolescent patients transition to the “adult side.” I also enjoy offering aesthetic treatments with Botox and Dermal Fillers, as well as simply making everyday dentistry more enjoyable. Patients that have been seen in the practice since they were 2 and 3 years old routinely visit for their cleanings, and I am always entranced by their amazing tales of the office through the years. Just yesterday, a patient told me, “I don’t even feel like I am coming to the dentist. I feel like I am visiting family.” This is exactly what we want each and every patient to feel when they walk through the door. We have team members that have been employed for 20, 25 and 30 years here. We care for all generations, and we pride ourselves on being a comfortable, familiar environment for your entire family to receive the care they need and maintain a healthy mouth throughout their lives. We look forward to continuing to watch generations grow in our practice.

doing, we can do our very best to do it.” For the Dees family, this approach was exactly what they were looking for. Hope was born 8 weeks premature, weighing 3 pounds and 5 ounces. She had her first open-heart surgery at 2 months old, and her second one when she was 9 months old. In July 2016, Dr. Langley performed Hope’s third open-heart surgery in such a way that when the artificial valve he put in her heart needs to be replaced (when it wears out), an interventional cardiologist will be able to replace it by entering through a small incision in her leg, rather than having to operate on her chest again. “This man is just magical,” Dees says about Langley. When Hope’s appendix ruptured eight weeks after that third open-heart surgery, Langley stopped by her hospital room to see how she was doing. “He’s such a busy man, but he visited her,” Dees says. “Hope has a huge amount of anxiety in a medical setting. She wouldn’t smile for anybody but him.” When asked for her advice for parents in similar situations, Dees says she would do as much research as possible right away, and check out mortality and success rates of the surgeons and the hospitals. She encourages parents to ask questions at their ultrasound visits about their baby’s heart, and to make sure the baby gets a pulse oximeter test after birth to check oxygenation. “It’s your child; that’s your priority,” she says. “Advocate for your child. I learned to ask a lot of questions. If my gut is telling me to ask it, I ask it. No question is an unreasonable one.” As for Hope, she turned 13 in December. She’s witty and smart, and loves her family. She’s in the chorus at John Long Middle School, and this year, she performed in a drama showcase. Dees cried watching her. “She’s a cool kid, but I’m biased,” her mother says. “She’s made me strong.”

child’s bedroom should be a place where they can be themselves, feel loved and safe. For a child facing a medical crisis, their bedroom is where they gain the strength and comfort needed to heal. Savvy Giving by Design is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide comfort, support and healing to families with a child facing a medical crisis by transforming the interior spaces of their homes at no cost to them. Run by volunteers, the organization relies on cash donations and grants, as well as donors who provide in-kind materials and labor to support their cause. Kylie Ponton of Ponton Interiors launched the Tampa Bay Chapter in March 2018. “As a mother of three, some of my favorite rooms to design are for kids. As soon as I heard about Savvy Giving By Design, I knew I had to help bring this to Florida. My hope is these spaces will give the children and their families hope, love and a touch of whimsy.” In August they selected their first room recipient, Trinity. Trinity was diagnosed in July of 2018, at the age of 2 ½, with neuroblastoma, a complicated tumor in her neck. When the interior design team first met Trinity, she shared her beautiful personality, with bright smiles and generous hugs. The girls, Cierra, 5, Trinity, 3, and Anastasia, 1, (and their parents) shared wishlist items for the rooms, favorite colors and treasured things. Then the design team got to work. Similar to any design project, concept boards were created and a room layout designed. The girls needed room to sleep three, with safe access to a top bunk (think stairs versus ladder), and the team wanted to create a cozy space for dreaming, reading and craft projects—all in a room that was 10’ x 10’. A custom barn door was added to the closet for easier access to the entire space and to tackle closet organization. A pink and purple wallpaper mural was applied to one wall, an accent of whimsical colors and pattern. New lighting added sparkle and shine, and custom window treatments were also generously donated to create the perfect dark environment for resting when needed. The girls got to see their new space at a surprise reaveal in November.
