Welcome to Ripon‚ WI Who says brick-and-mortar shops are dead? Whoever said it clearly hasn’t been to Ripon lately. While malls struggle for storefronts‚ and many cities worry about aracting entrepreneurs‚ that ’s not Ripon’s story. Need proof? Take a stroll down Watson Street‚ Ripon’s iconic downtown retail center for nearly 170 years. Virtually every one of the historic buildings is filled‚ or in the midst of a renovation so that it‚ too‚ can fulfill someone’s shopping fantasies in the near future. From quirky home decor shops to children’s toys to clothing to restaurants‚ downtown Ripon is unlike any shopping venue you’ll find in the area. (If you look hard enough‚ you can even find an indoor farm!) But it doesn’t stop with downtown. Ripon’s suburban shopping experience along the west side is growing‚ too. In fact‚ city-wide‚ few vacant buildings remain. It’s an exciting time for Ripon. Come. Spend a day here. Spend a weekend. Spend a lifetime in this community. You won’t regret it. These days‚ Ripon’s got it all - and you can‚ too. Welcome to Ripon. Welcome to the Ripon Guide.

Historic Ripon

A proud history To make sense of Ripon today, one must first understand the community’s 175-year-old history. It’s a story of adventurers, visionaries and entrepreneurs undeterred by economic, political or climatic adversity. Ripon’s roots date back to 1844, when about 20 people moved up here from the Kenosha area, seeking to form a utopian community. Their village of Ceresco grew to 200. Among the common buildings they constructed were a communal “long house” and post office that exist today near Ceresco Park. Just east of Ceresco, settlers formed a second village. It was named “Ripon” after the ancestral home of founder John Scott Horner, who grew up in the English city of Ripon,Yorkshire. A rivalry between Ceresco and Ripon resulted in 1851 with Ripon prevailing and, during that same year, forming a college on top of a hill to attract “responsible” settlers to the area.Today, Ripon College is a distinguished private liberal arts college.

Three years later, more than 50 citizens gathered on a cold, windy evening in the local one-room schoolhouse, entering as anti-slavery Whigs, Free Soilers and Democrats and emerging as the first Republicans in the nation. Ripon grew quickly and attracted a large German and Polish population during the second half of the 19th century. Most of its settlers came from New England, New York and Pennsylvania.Today, growth is slower but still steady, with the 20-person village of Ceresco now enjoying a population of about 7,700.

Ripon Guide

2019

Birthplace of the Republican Party This simple frame schoolhouse, built in 1853, holds a powerful history. In the Little White Schoolhouse, a decision made by a small group of Ripon citizens changed the course of our nation’s history. These men and women of Ripon voted to form and become members of a new political party that would be called “Republican.” By a formal vote, the local committees of the Free Soil and Whig parties were dissolved. Five men — three Whigs, a Democrat, and a Free Soiler — were chosen as the committee of the new party. The birth of this party on March 1, 1854, brought a dedicated following of individuals who pledged to organize together and fight against the spread of slavery.

Special Events

Cookie Daze Cookie Daze 2019 will be held Saturday, Aug. 3 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Ripon’s Barlow Park, located at the intersection of Watson and Griswold streets. The festival, which is in its 24th year, will feature plenty of free children’s activities, rocket launches, clowns, cookie decorating and crafting opportunities. The highlight of Cookie Daze is the Cookie Drops and Cookie Hunts for all kids. Thousands of cookies are hoisted above the crowd, courtesy of the Ripon Area Fire District, and Cookie Monster pulls the cord, causing thousands of cookies come floating to the ground as kids hurry to collect as many as they can with an opportunity to win prizes — or even a new bike. Cookie Daze also features a Bake and Taste Competition in which area cookie bakers may whip up a batch of their best cookies. Festival-goers even will have the chance to sample the baked goods and vote for the “People’s Choice.” Cookie Daze was started after Ripon was named "Cookietown USA" by former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson as a tribute to the citizens of Ripon who worked together to create what was then the world’s largest chocolate chip cookie. The creation’s size earned a spot in the Guinness Book of Worlds Records.

Cookie Daze is a festival that is dedicated to the long history of making cookies in Ripon and the generations of workers who helped it become Cookietown USA. For more information about Cookie Daze, visit www. ripon-wi.com or call the Ripon Chamber of Commerce at 920-748-6764.
