EDITOR’S NOTE

It’s braai time!

Although National Braai Day has come and gone, it’s still Heritage Month and a braai is in order – in fact, it’s always in order! Try this great Marinated Sirloin Steaks and Sriracha Butter recipe courtesy of Mi Casa’s J’Something. Ingredients: For the steak: • 2 thick cut sirloin steaks • 1 ½ cups Castle Milk Stout • 1 tsp garlic powder • 1 tsp salt • 2 tbsps Worcestershire sauce • 30ml olive oil • Salt and pepper, to season For the butter: • 120g butter, softened • 2 tbsps Castle Milk Stout • 1 tsp sriracha sauce • ¼ tsp salt Method: • Make the butter first by adding the softened butter, Castle Milk Stout, sriracha sauce and salt to a blender, blend until smooth and well combined. • Lay a piece of cling wrap on a flat surface, scoop the butter in a long line onto the cling wrap. Fold the cling wrap over the butter and form into a tight log, tightly wrap the log with the cling wrap and refrigerate to set, about 30 minutes. • For the steak, stir together Castle Milk Stout, garlic powder, salt and Worcestershire sauce in a shallow bowl big enough to accommodate steaks. Add the steaks, cover and refrigerate for 3-4 hours turning occasionally to marinate both sides. • 30 minutes prior to cooking, remove the steak from marinade and pat dry, allow to sit at room temperature for the remainder of the 30 minutes. • Sprinkle the steak with salt and pepper on both sides. Braai steaks for four minutes on one side then flip and fry on the other side for another 4 minutes (for medium rare, cook longer if you want your steaks medium or well done). • Transfer steaks to a cutting board and allow to rest for five minutes. Serve steaks with a generous slice of sriracha butter.

Rusty the Rhino brings fun healthy foods to paediatric patients An innovative paediatric catering programme has been introduced at Netcare Mulbarton Hospital – the ‘Rusty the Rhino’ programme, developed by the Compass Group and Medirest, Netcare’s catering service supplier, is being introduced in all Netcare hospitals with paediatric wards countrywide. “The programme heralds a new approach to paediatric catering in that the enticing menus not only offer nutritious meals designed to appeal to junior palates while the friendly rhinoceros character is expected to make the hospital experience more pleasant for children,” says Nellie Koen, General Manager of Netcare Mulbarton Hospital. When children are admitted to hospital they invariably feel anxious about being away from home. At Netcare Mulbarton Hospital we strive to make our paediatric wards a welcoming environment for our young patients. In our experience, children who are unwell and are in the unfamiliar surroundings of a healthcare facility often require a little extra coaxing to encourage them to eat, as maintaining good nutrition is a very important part of their recovery process,” explains Koen. Celebrity chef Reuben Riffel, who is an ambassador for Medirest, was involved in the launch of this exciting new children’s

programme at Netcare hospitals. “I have always been passionate about good food, as it is such an integral part of our daily lives and can enhance almost any experience. Being a father myself, I know that children are often very particular about which foods they are prepared to try,” he notes. “Rusty the Rhino brings a new element of fun to meal times for children in hospital. Presentation of food is extremely important, and the meals will be served on trays and crockery decorated with Rusty the Rhino’s smiling face. The age-specific menus are designed to be healthy yet enticing for children and include ‘kiddie favourites’ with a wholesome yet tasty twist,” Riffel explains. “The rhinoceros was chosen for the programme because children in South Africa know and identify with a rhinoceros,” says Dolf Smook, General Manager of Medirest. “At the same time the rhinoceros character also aims to foster an interest in this endangered species and promote conservation consciousness in the young patients.” Smook says that to add to the excitement of mealtimes, meals will be served by staff members wearing Rusty the Rhino branded aprons and caps. As part of the programme, young patients will receive

special ‘star award’ stickers as reward for taking their medicine and eating their meals. Rusty the Rhino colouring in materials and other fun activities are part of the programme to keep children entertained while in hospital. On their discharge, each child will also receive a ‘bravery award’ certificate. “We are extremely pleased to welcome Rusty the Rhino with his big smile in our hospital. We look forward to seeing the smiles of our young patients as they enjoy the special children’s menus and fun activities during their stay at Netcare Mulbarton Hospital,” said Koen.

A letter to the editor

Our endangered heritage...the rhino Letter by Tokkie Botes Rhinos – these majestic giants are poached, slaughtered and butchered every day. For what? For a horn, for status, with no curative value. A false myth spread by the ill informed. Some speculate that the rhino will be extinct in 10 years but the sad truth is it may be much sooner than that. When it comes to continuation of a species a lot of help is needed and we at Flying For Freedom SA do exactly that. We fly for freedom – the freedom of these beautiful creatures. Our mission is to provide rangers

and veterinarians with necessary air support, transporting them to poaching sites and snared animals. As a pilot I have donated hundreds of hours flying my helicopter for this cause to improve the lives of all wildlife. They are part of our heritage, they need our help, and they have no voice. And very soon they will be extinct! The lucky few will survive only in conservation camps if we don’t act now. Time is of the essence to save these endangered species. Let’s step in and do this together. Let’s save our heritage.

Black axe suspects arrested for liquor store robbery Three suspects were arrested by Moffatview SAPS for a business break-in on Tuesday 29 August. According to Moffatview SAPS Communications Officer Constable Mikateko Bila, John Mbabazani Moloi, a reaction officer responding to alarms and prevention of crime around the areas of South Hills, Electron and Moffatview, reported to duty on 29 August. At about 01:55am, officer Moloi received an alert from radio control regarding an activation of an alarm at Golden Spot Liquor store. Officer Moloi then drove to the address and also requested for

back up. “On arrival, officer Moloi noticed that the gate and burglar door were broken. While the officers were investigating the scene, an unknown male walked past. They asked him where he was going and he said his car was giving him problems,” said Cnst Bila. The officers then continued to patrol. At about 02:00am, they noticed a silver Toyota Avanza at Southern Kliprivier Road. The officers then saw the same unknown male who again said his car was giving him trouble. The vehicle had two more occupants,

explained Cnst Bila. “The officers stopped the vehicle in order to search it. While officer Jeffrey Maluleka was on guard, the officers noticed the two occupants were lying down. Inside the vehicle, a plasma Samsung television, a green crowbar and a black axe were found. They arrested the three suspects and took them to Moffatview SAPS,” said Cnst Bila. The owner of the Golden Spot Liquor store confirmed that the Samsung television was stolen from the business. Constable Billy Letsoalo is investigating the case.

L. SHARIF & MAMA SHIFA’S PRAYERS, my husband CONFESSED

JH039415

Plumbers? Cleaning service? Electricians?

6 years before I met this powerful spiritual man L. SHARIF & MAMA SHIFA. I was UNHAPPY because my husband was cheating on me, our kids were always sickly and I had no-money! I tried everything from healers, priests & gurus but nothing seemed to work for me. I only wasted money. Luckily I saw two testimonials on local T.V. Station by an OLD MAN whose son L. SHARIF & MAMA SHIFA had saved from DRUG and ALCOHOL abuse and a DIVORCED LADY L. SHARIF & MAMA SHIFA had RE-UNITED with her EX HUSBAND after 9 years. I paid R200 CONSULTATION FEE and L. SHARIF & MAMA SHIFA ACCURATELY READ MY FORTUNE and told me all my problems before I spoke a word to him. He used a mirror to SHOW FACE OF PEOPLE who were trying to pull me down. He preformed a 1day special prayer for me, cleansed me from bad luck and also gave me powerful love

ARE YOU FEELING TOTALLY HELPLESS, HEARTBROKEN & FINANCIALLY MISERABLE? IS THE SITUATION GETTING WORSE? DON`T LOSE HOPE! I have referred L. SHARIF & MAMA SHIFA to many people & he has delivered results for them within a few days. He can help you too!

Free blood pressure and “March to a million” Santa Shoebox Project aims to put smiles on cholesterol testing 1-million children’s faces MediRite pharmacies will be offering free blood pressure and cholesterol testing until Friday 29 September in support of World Heart Day on 29 September. To make use of this free service, customers are urged to make an appointment at their nearest MediRite, where a pharmacist will administer the blood pressure test. “Cardiovascular disease is among the top three causes of death in sub-Saharan Africa; therefore it is important to protect your heart by having your blood pressure and cholesterol levels checked regularly. Both hypertension or high blood pressure and high cholesterol have no major symptoms and the only way to

know if you are at risk is to have yourself tested,” says Professor Liesl Zühlke, President of the South African Heart Association. “High blood pressure and high levels of cholesterol are associated with an increased risk of heart disease. I would encourage all South Africans to make use of this excellent opportunity to have their blood pressure and cholesterol tested,” says Prof Zühlke. The free blood pressure and cholesterol tests are available at Glenvista Checkers (011 432 8024) and Checkers Southgate Mall in Mondeor (011 941 2099). Visit www.medirite.co.za for more details.

Ward 125 cleans up

CLEAN: Ward 125 removing rubbish from the park. The Democratic Alliance Ward 125 Branch executives arranged a clean up in the park situated opposite the Kibler Park Spar in Stanmore Crescent on Saturday 09 September. The initiative was implemented by Ward 125 Branch Chairman Frank Diener, Ward 125 Branch Secretary Giesela Pattison and several other committee members in support of City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba’s A Re Sebetseng clean up campaign which he launched in Yeoville during August 2017. “It was an amazing effort and the branch members that participated were

shocked at the amount of rubble they cleared for the few hours they attended to the park,” said Diener. “The aim is to make our public conscience of the indiscriminate littering around our city and to bring the attention to the impact it has on the environment. We therefore urge everybody to support this initiative and let’s create a cleaner and safer environment for us all,” added Diener. Community members are kindly requested to show their support by dedicating a couple of hours on Saturday 30 September to pick up litter and clean up in their streets.

Moffatview SAPS celebrates Heritage Month In honour of Heritage Month, Moffatview SAPS and community members paid homage to their cultural roots on Friday 15 September at Southern Suburbs Sports and Recreation Centre in Rosettenville.

Now in its 11th year, South African children’s charity the Santa Shoebox Project (SSB) is shaking things up! Having exceeded 650 000 shoeboxes in 2016, SSB is marching to reach 1 000 000 underprivileged children by 2019. What this means is that the number of shoeboxes required each year will be increasing to 110 000 in 2017, 115 000 in 2018 and 125 000 in 2019. The excitement will build until the millionth pledge is made for the millionth child and the millionth shoebox is delivered by a donor to one of the many drop offs around South Africa – and handed to the child for whom it was pledged. In support of the March to a Million campaign, a flagship drop off will be held at Stor-Age in Randburg. At this up-scaled event at the end of October, Gauteng donors will see Santa’s workshop in action, with more than 30 000 shoeboxes being

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our stakeholders over the last 10 years for supporting us in so many very generous ways. We literally could not have achieved this without you!” The public are asked to participate in the project by visiting www.santashoebox.org. za to register as a supporter. Donors are able to choose the child or children for whom they wish to gift a shoebox.
