On Sunday, 23 November, an armed gang opened fire on Lyle Houldsworth, a construction manager paying employees after a project.

Lyle was rushed to hospital after the gang opened fire on him while paying his workers. Doctors are currently treating him for severe wounds in his throat. The doctors believe he will survive, but faces a long road to recovery, he may even sustain longterm damage to his vocal cords.

The construction manager is the sole breadwinner for his family and owns his own business. He is also a pillar of strength to many in Alberton.

Megan & Clayton Duckworth, friends of the Houldsworth family started a crowd-funding campaign on the 27 November 2018 to try ease the financial stress experienced by the family and get them through this tough time.

Ekurhuleni stands against gender-based violence The City of Ekurhuleni, working with state organs in the health and law enforcement sector and NGOs, hosted the 16 Days of Activism For No Violence Against Women and Children in Germiston on 28 November 2018.

The walk was hosted to provide support to victims of gender-based violence, raise awareness and to provide a collaborative approach to the fight against gender-based violence, by including law enforcement agencies and health care institutions. The Gauteng Clinical Forensic Medical Services was one of the government institutions that participate in the campaign.

The walk started at Betha Gxowa Hospital in Germiston, went along the Germiston Taxi Rank and ended at Germiston Police Station.

The activists against gender-based violence, which were among the hundreds other marchers, distributed genderbased violence information pamphlets that had contact details of where victims of abuse can seek help.

Vandag vertel ek vir julle iets wat julle nooit geweet het van my nie vriende. Ek is self ook ‘n kerkorreliste. Reeds afgetree maar ek speel gereeld as aflosorreliste by verskeie kerke. So beland ek gister by ‘n kerssangdiens by ‘n baie ou kerk in Johannesburg. Alles het vlot verloop met die oefening. Die diens self het uitstekend gegaan, maar dit was verskriklik warm op die gallery. Ons het die waaier aangesit en dit het baie gehelp, al was die waaier stokoud. Tot ons by die slotlied kom.

Ek sit nog rustig en speel toe ontplof die waaier. Stukkies blou plastiek orals. Dit reën neer op die agterste 3 rye van die kerk en ek lyk soos ‘n blou kersversiering.

Maar ek speel aan. Teen die 4de vers is ons oor die skrik maar die hele koor lag so laat die gemeente solo sing. Gysie het tot laat die middag stukkies plastiek uit my hare verwyder.

CHRISTMAS and NEW YEAR message from Executive Major The 2018 year is coming to an end, and with it is the Christmas and New Year which are fast approaching. This period of the year is known for the joyous celebrations, festivities and generous giving of gifts that have for ages distinguished it from other periods of the year.

Furthermore, for us at the City of Ekurhuleni, it is also a period of deep reflection on the commitments that we make every year to our residents and ratepayers, and the gratitude that we owe to our hardworking and dedicated officials who always strive to do more with limited resources. It is through their most profound dedication and diligence that we as the City, are counted among the very best, and we are grateful to them for being the embodiment of the values underpinning our governance model – Batho Pele.

Speaking of our commitments, we can proudly speak of them as having been immensely achieved, as the year ends.

And, those achievements are countless. Among them are the handover of title deeds that we did through our accelerated service delivery programme – Siyaqhuba, connecting of electricity to informal settlements, building of roads and new infrastructure, and more importantly, collecting refuse every week and providing clean water every day to our residents.

These achievements have been noted by external observers, and of notable importance is the recent Gauteng CityRegion Observatory’s 5th Quality of Life Survey (2017/2018), which is the biggest social attitudes surveys in sub-Saharan Africa. Beside highlighting the improving quality of life in Gauteng, it named City of Ekurhuleni as doing tremendously well compared to its peer-metros in Gauteng.

I pass the greatest of gratitude to our residents to have registered their appreciation of the work we do by participating in the survey, and putting forward the facts that they do know of the good services we deliver every day. We are indebted to our residents for their acknowledgement

Housebreaker arrested in Alberton North On Monday, 26 November, CPS Security’s control room received a duress call from a resident in Fifth Avenue in Alberton North requesting help as a suspect was spotted on their premises.

They immediately dispatched their tacti-

cal team and on arrival found the suspect hiding on a nearby property.

The suspect was arrested and handed over to Alberton SAPS. Stolen items and drugs were found in his possession.

Revive Electrical crowned Champions The Alrode Industrial Soccer League season 2018 came to an end this past Friday 23 November.

Revive Electrical were crowned Champions for 2018 after an outstanding run they had in a very tough league season where they were facing stiff competition from runners up Convector Core.
