So it seems that swashbuckling and snake fearing screen legend Indiana Jones will crack his whip once again as Steven Spielberg recently announced the fifth instalment of the Indy franchise. According to the announcement, “Indiana Jones will return to the big screen on 19 July 2019 for a fifth epic adventure in the blockbuster series. Steven Spielberg, who directed all four previous films, will helm the as-yetuntitled project with star Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role. Franchise veterans Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will produce.” Famed archaeologist and explorer Indiana Jones was introduced in 1981’s Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark and later thrilled audiences in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The four films have brought in nearly $2-billion at the

global box office. Apart from having a major longstanding crush on Harrison Ford (I don’t care that he’s 73-years-old), Indiana Jones has always had a special place in my heart. I think it’s because I was introduced to the film franchise from a young age. My ultimate Indy movie is Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom – Indy’s 11-year-old Chinese sidekick Short Round and love interest Willie Scott, the giant “vampire” bats, the terrifying demonic priest Mola Ram, the creepy crawlies, and the mine cart chase all made for an enthralling adventure. As expected, Indiana Jones 5 has already received criticism. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull left Indy fans seething due to the inclusion of aliens and Shia LaBeouf. Another critique is Ford’s age – critics are saying that no one wants to see a grandpa escaping from monster runaway boulders and perturbed Nazi soldiers. From several filming accidents to numerous aircraft crashes, Ford has suffered various injuries; despite

his accident prone tendencies coupled with his age, he’s still fit and eager to continue acting. We need to be realistic here – Indy isn’t a superhero or a robot; he’s human and will age which needs to be taken into account in the franchise. Despite the flak and the naysayers, I’m excited for the fifth movie. What’s your favourite Indiana Jones movie?

COMPLEX COMPLAINT Letter by Disgruntled

For the past three years I’ve been living in a townhouse complex in Bassonia and my life has been made a living hell by another resident in the complex. This individual, who is the chairperson of the complex’s body corporate, continues to harass me by allowing their visitors to park on my driveway. This person also discards their building rubble on my driveway. She has also made rules that are not practical for a townhouse where a lot of children reside.

ADVERTISE TODAY And get your business noticed!

The complex is being turned into an old age home – the children can’t play with their bicycles, skateboards or other toys inside the complex.

EDITOR’S RESPONSE:

Dear Disgruntled, I have sent your letter of complaint to the body corporate chairperson for a response.

candace.king@tametimes.co.za Life as a young exchange student living in a foreign country may be daunting, but for 16-year-old Hanna Klaesson Hjelt it’s not only an adventure but also an eye-opening experience. Klaesson Hjelt left her family behind in her hometown of Stockholm, Sweden earlier this year in February to pursue life ‘ekasi style’ in the South of Johannesburg. With a keen interest in travelling and learning about different cultures, Klaesson Hjelt embarked on an exchange student programme through volunteer-based cultural exchange organisation American Field Service (AFS) to live in South Africa for a gap year. The Klaesson Hjelt family are familiar with the AFS programme as her father, brother and sister have been part of the programme before. “Travelling and exchange programmes are a part of my family. I really wanted to go away for a year and experience a different culture. I don’t want to be a tourist, I want to be a part of the culture,” explains Klaesson Hjelt. She says the South African bug bit when she visited the country for the first time in 2009 while on holiday with her family. Currently living with the Moloi family in Lenasia and attending Grade 11 at Calvary Christian College in Alan Manor, Klaesson Hjelt says she loves her new family and surroundings. “The experience has been really good; I like the school and the people here who have been very kind to me,” she says. Living in a new country and experiencing new things hasn’t been completely easy, admits Klaesson Hjelt, adding that certain things have been hard to adapt to. “Although I felt a part of the Moloi family from day one, it was tough – I cried the whole first week; I was homesick but eventually I overcame it as well as the culture shock,” she explains. Another major issue has been safety. “In Sweden it’s normal to walk around freely but here in South Africa safety is a concern – it’s hard for me because I’m usually open and free in my movement,” notes Klaesson Hjelt. Despite the challenges, Klaesson Hjelt has made herself at home, saying that she’s already caught a minibus taxi, eaten chicken feet and visited Soweto.

“I’ve explored certain parts of Johannesburg already and have met new people and made friends. One of my friends is another exchange student from Sweden who lives in Soweto and attends President High School. I love to explore and put myself out there,” she says. Through her journey thus far, Klaesson Hjelt notes that she’s been exposed to prejudice and local stereotypes. “I’ve had people stare at me saying that I shouldn’t be in certain places. I want to break the stereotypes surrounding race, language and culture. I don’t care who you are, if you’re a good person that’s all that matters,” she says. “We were really excited to host Hanna,” says host sister to Klaesson Hjelt, 15-yearold Grade 10 Calvary Christian College pupil Boitumelo Moloi. Moloi says that challenges are inevitable when cultures integrate. “I want to try teach Tswana to Hanna and get her to eat our cultural dishes such as pig feet, chicken intestines, and sheep head. Cow tongue we will try together,” says Moloi. “So far, she’s cool with pap,” she laughs. Moloi will travel to the USA on an exchange student programme in August this year. “At Calvary Christian College we encourage spontaneity and participation,” says Calvary Christian College High School Principal Reeva Robertson. Principal Robertson says that it’s not only been an adventure for Klaesson Hjelt but also for the school. “We want to encourage exchange programs in the school. We couldn’t have run this without the host family who have opened up to Hanna. I honour them,” she says. Principal Robertson notes that at first Klaesson Hjelt was reserved and quiet, but has seen her confidence grow since her arrival. Still on her South Africa bucket list before returning to Stockholm in January 2017, Klaesson Hjelt wants to have a braai, eat traditional Indian food, and visit Pretoria and Cape Town. “When I go back home I will be a different person after my multicultural and religious experiences here in South Africa. I’m grateful for the Moloi family and for them exposing their lives and culture to me,” says Klaesson Hjelt. Thinking ahead, her dream is to become a doctor and can see herself living and working in South Africa.

When the owner returned to work it was noticed that the roof was cut open and two back windows were broken. On further inspection, tools had also been taken. The docket was given to Booysens SAPS Detective Sergeant Edmond Rangwanasha to do investigation. D/Sgt Rangwanasha was able to arrest a suspect and obtain all the outstanding information. The suspect was found guilty and was sentenced to five years direct imprisonment. The management of Booysens SAPS would like to thank the members and other role players for their dedication in the fight against crime.

Climate Reality Mentors Return to SA

GREEN GIRLS: Catherine and Ella Bella Constantinides Miss Earth South Africa, Cathay Pacific and Tsogo Sun hosted a debrief session on the recent Climate Reality Training with former US Vice President Mr Al Gore. “The training in Manila, Philippines was our third training session with the honourable Chairman of Climate Reality, Mr Al Gore,” said UN Youth Ambassador Ella Bella Constantinides, who was accompanied by the Miss Earth team and Executive Director of the Miss Earth South Africa Organisation, Catherine Constantinides in Manila. “Each session brings with it a deeper learning and understanding. We are challenged to increase our knowledge about the global disaster that our planet is facing. We had the opportunity to deepen our understanding of the science behind climate change, mitigation and adaptation so that we can further explore the role we as young environmentalists play in changing climate change,” explained Ella Bella. From thousands of applications, 700 applicants were selected from around the globe. The Climate Reality Leadership Corps is a committed network of leaders from six continents and from over 130 countries, creating a powerful ground swell of activists. Ella Bella and Catherine are two such activists; they are change agents in the environmental, climate and social development fields. They were honoured to be chosen as mentors to the Al Gore conference. A main focus of the conference was to learn and explore the basic science around climate change, weather patterns, catastrophic events and how the globe is being affected by the warming and thickening of the atmosphere. People do not attribute drought, floods, hail storms, typhoons or hurricanes to climate change, and these young leaders are working to change this. With the warming temperatures across the globe, food insecurity is more of a reality now than it has ever been. Conflict over land and water can be seen across Africa along with severe drought, erratic fires, landslides, typhoons, floods, heavier storms, hurricanes, the spread of disease and damage to infrastructure. “We are privileged to have been able to take a group of young women with us to the conference to engage and learn more about ways to change climate change,” said Catherine. “We are proud to be part of the Miss Earth South Africa programme which has enabled us to be able to extend the learning experience to the participants as well as the winners,” added Catherine.

DA members pick it up Aware of a neighbourhood drowning under the weight of a growing mountain of rubbish, courtesy of the illegal Pikitup strike, members of the Democratic Alliance Johannesburg South Constituency, Sarah Wissler and Michael Crichton, helped clean up the suburbs by tackling the issue head-on. Over the first weekend of April, they escorted the Pikitup trucks through the night across the suburbs. This was to ensure that the inexperienced stand-in Pikitup staff serviced the area as efficiently as possible, focussing on the areas worst-hit by the strike first. Over the weekend the team made great progress in removing rubbish from Mulbarton, Glenvista, Liefde en Vrede, Glenanda North, Gleneagles, Rosettenville and Oakdene, amongst other areas. “I became aware that Pikitup had begun collecting the refuse in the suburbs again, but were not reaching all of the roads, as they had new people working for them who were unfamiliar with the area,” said Wissler. As a result, she offered to escort them through

the suburbs. They were only too happy with the assistance. “It was really nice to see the reactions on the faces of the residents who were relieved to finally have their refuse collected,” said Wissler. Crichton, a member of the DA Ward 56 branch, said that he was only too pleased to be able to also assist with the refuse collection. “The long overdue collection of refuse has proven to be a huge health hazard to our City,” he said. Crichton added that he’s sure that the residents will be very happy to be rid of the stench that the refuse has caused. Papillon Easter at Eventide Home The Papillon Foundation recently treated 60 pensioners from the Salvation Army Eventide Old Age Home to an Easter feast. Papillon Foundation board member Christa Tagg and her partner Mike Yiannakis joined up with the Papillon management team to host the grand party where food and treats were prepared and laid out at the home. Funded by Tagg and Yiannakis, the Easter feast was a spread of note – from cake and meat rolls to chocolate and other tasty goods, the party resulted in an amazingly happy crowd and the hosts were showered with gratitude. The Papillon Foundation would like to congratulate all individuals, NGOs, and worthy causes that went out of their way to care for others this Easter.

TEAM RAND WATER WINS

BOWLS LEAGUE

The Rand Water Zwartkopjes Bowling Club team took top honours at the annual Zwartkopjes Saturday Morning League held at the Rand Water Zwartkopjes Pumping Station situated in Kromvlei Avenue, Mondeor. After playing five weeks of bowls unbeaten, the Rand Water team won the final by a satisfactory margin for the first time in two years. “The tournament was an excellent success. Well done to the Rand Water team for winning the Saturday Morning League,” says Frank Duffy, President of the Rand Water Zwartkopjes Bowling Club. Now in its 39th year, the Zwartkopjes Saturday Morning League took place from Saturday 20 February until Saturday 19 March and was participated in by 14 teams hailing from various clubs. “This tournament has loyally been supported by visitor clubs ranging from Johannesburg South and North, Alberton, Bedfordview and Roodepoort over the years,” notes Duffy. “We are very proud of this win, considering we competed against district and national players. However, we wish to thank all of those players who support us each year. Thank you for your sterling effort,” says Duffy. “A big thank you also goes to all the ladies that helped with the food and catering for the past five weeks; without TEAM RAND WATER: (From left) Chris le Roux, Frank Duffy, Louis Burger, Geoff Bull and Matias their help we would not be able to hold such a successful tournament,” he adds.
