HEARTFELT THANK YOU Letter by Swami Shivashankarananda Dear Candace, I went to the Checkers at Columbine Square last week to collect the latest edition of tame TIMES Johannesburg South and lo and behold, I was astounded to see what extensive coverage you gave the Festival of Deepavali! Indeed, that’s real democracy and deep respect shown for the promotion of religion and spirituality by you and your esteemed newspaper. At the Sri Adi Shankara Ashrama we are a non-sectarian, non-aligned and totally universal institution with deep love and respect for all religious teachings of all religions. On behalf of our executive committee, I wish to personally extend to both you and the management of tame TIMES our heartfelt gratitude for your loving kindness. Needless

to say, I was deeply touched by your kind gesture! In all my excitement, I took a few copies to show one of our sister nuns, Swami Shraddhananda Mataji, and she too was extremely overjoyed by the benevolence and catholicity of your newspaper. Once again, please accept our gratitude for the coverage you have given us. We feel immensely humbled by your love and affection.

EDITOR’S RESPONSE:

Dear Swamiji, thank you so much for your touching and equally inspiring letter. It’s always an honour to receive letters such as yours and to be able to reach out to the community. To all our Hindu readers I hope you have a blessed Diwali.

DONNINGTON DRIVE PARK Letter by Paseka Matlhaku, Gauteng Department of Economic Development Dear Candace, thanks very much for publishing my letter to City Parks in your newspaper last week but I want to make a correction of error where you have stated that the removal of black wattles was done at Donnington Drive in Mulbarton; in fact the correct area is Donnington Drive Park in Glenvista. The reason I am correcting this is due to the fact that Donnington Drive also crosses to Mulbarton but there is no park there and the community might be confused. Please note that all your efforts are much appreciated.

EDITOR’S RESPONSE:

Dear Paseka, thank you for pointing the error out.

I’m in love with Food Lover’s Market. Having opened on Thursday 05 November at Mall at Newmarket, Food Lover’s is a feast for all the senses. Get on down to Food Lover’s for just about anything you desire. #Foodieaffair

WORKING TOGETHER: (From left) Ward 57 Councillor Faeeza Chame, Ward 55 Councillor Rashieda Glenvista 5 Residents Association founder Sarah Wissler outside the Jackson’s house in Turffontein After being reported missing for just over two weeks, 13-year-old Alliya Anastasia Jackson was found in Turffontein on the evening of Thursday 05 November. On Thursday 22 October, Alliya was reported missing by her

parents Sally and Leonard Jackson after she left home at 07:00pm to go buy an ice lollipop at a nearby tuck shop in High Street, Turffontein and did not return. According to Booysens SAPS Warrant Officer Lorraine

van Emmerik, Alliya was approached by a 19-year-old male at the tuck shop and was taken by gunpoint. It is alleged that the suspect took Alliya to various places in and around Johannesburg including Soweto, Johannesburg Park Station, Kensington and Germiston. During the time of Alliya’s disappearance, Ward 55 Councillor Rashieda Landis with the assistance of the Pink Ladies Missing Children’s Organisation, members from the Chrisville Neighbourhood Watch, CPF members as well as various local councillors relentlessly searched for Alliya. The suspect and Alliya returned home on the evening of Thursday 05 November. “The two returned to their respective homes – the suspect just after 06:00pm and Alliya just after 08:00pm. Cllr Landis was then contacted and joined members from Booysens SAPS to collect information regarding what had happened,” says van Emmerik. Booysens SAPS arrested the suspect and is currently in custody and a case has been opened. Due to the sensitivity of the case, certain information cannot be released and currently Booysens SAPS and the Child Protection Unit are investigating the case further, says van Emmerik. “This should be a wake up call for all young girls not to trust anyone. Let your parents know your whereabouts all of the time,” says Cllr Chame. Landis and Community worker and founder of Glenvista 5 Residents Association Sarah Wissler has arranged complete family counselling has been arranged for the Jackson family. Wissler has also contacted a psychologist to help Alliya.

ROBBERY AT MALL OF THE SOUTH

On Friday 06 November between the times of 09:02am and 09:15am, a robbery took place inside Markhams at the Mall of the South. According to Waldo Marcus, Mall of the South spokesperson and Head of Marketing at Zenprop Property Holdings, three suspects entered the store posing as shoppers. The first suspect entered at 09:02am just after opening, the second entered 30 seconds later and the third a minute and a half thereafter. A possible fourth suspect was wandering outside the store, potentially as a look out. “The suspects left the store individually between the times of 09:12am and 09:15am in different directions, ensuring they that did not attract any attention. The suspects left on foot,” explains Marcus. He adds that no firearms were visible from the CCTV footage and Crime Intelligence and SAPS is busy with a detailed investigation. “The staff was locked up in the storeroom where cell phones were taken. They are receiving professional trauma counselling through centre management,” says Marcus. “All footage has been handed over to SAPS and additional training will be provided to tenants’ staff and security. We are also welcoming increased visibility and support from the CPF, SAPS and JMPD,” notes Marcus. “We are fortunate no one was injured and all parties are assisting the police with their investigation,” says Marcus.

SWEETEST WAY TO SAVE A LIFE

During October, LCV Engineering Solutions situated in Alrode, Alberton celebrated cancer awareness month by selling cupcakes to raise funds for Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer. HR Manager Debbie Richards from LCV Engineering Solutions also went out of her way to double what the

company raised for those fighting cancer. LCV Engineering Solutions does not just aim for perfection in structural, mechanical, piping and platework, but also try to excel in every task they take on when it comes to charity and giving back. “When it comes to standing together,

LCV Engineering knows all about it, as we will continue to raise awareness for those battling with cancer,” says LCV Engineering Solutions receptionist Bianca Biccard.

Local entrepreneur creates Africa’s first YouTube With hard work, determination and in the pursuit of greatness, young entrepreneur and Mondeor resident Thabang Motloung has created Africa’s first YouTube, called The Best Entertainment (TBE) World Wide. “The name is inspired by the greatest boxer of all time, Floyd Mayweather, who calls himself TBE which stands for ‘The Best Ever.’ The platform already boasts videos of Lewis Hamilton, Trevor Noah, Richard Branson, P. Diddy and many more,” says Motloung. Motloung says that he’s still learning the ropes of being a technology entrepreneur, and presently his aim is to experiment and learn about global iconic technology companies and the roles that they play in our daily lives, including how they can help in the creation of real values in our lives and forming meaningful global business relationships. “I have to thank individuals like Siya Xuza, a friend of many years and an individual who always encourages me to pursuit meaningful entrepreneurship and to never allow people to box me,” says Motloung. “Another friend that has also inspired me is Demetri

Catrakilis, former fly half of the Western Province who’s now playing in France for Montepellier under Springbok World Cup winning coach Jake White. Watching his journey from high school, through to university and now international rugby has been the reason why I some day hope to inspire that one individual who thinks that their dreams are bigger than their capabilities,” he adds. Motloung would also like to acknowledge two former schoolfriends who inspired him through their success – Chris Froome, the first African-born cyclist to win the Tour De France, and Scott Speeding who is now playing for the French international rugby team. “The reason behind why these individuals h a v e inspired me was because in school, I felt like they were the underdogs, and these individuals have gone to make history, and it’s the same challenge that I face, being h i g h l y

Inspiration is one of the most powerful forces because to inspire is to touch someone’s life on a spiritual level,” believes Motloung. He adds, “Inspiration can never be subsidised by obstacles that one faces, inspiration can’t be stolen because it resides everywhere, and it is inspiration that allows individuals to realise their true, meaningful value. Like Siya always says, why reach for the sky when there are footprints on the moon?” Visit www.tbeworldwide.com for those who’d like to follow the journey.

With crime on the rise in the community, Mondeor SAPS cautions domestic and garden workers to be vigilant. 1. Do not allow strangers on your premises without having properly identified the person first. For example, the person may pretend to be calling your employer using their cellphone. Do not allow people on the property if they ask for water or to use the bathroom. No one enters the property, no matter what. 2. Do not approach the people at the gate – it’s safer to be inside the house behind locked doors. When you are working in the garden, always close the gate. Never tell anyone that you are alone in the house. 3. Answer the phone – don’t let it automatically take a message. Simply tell callers at the gate or on the phone that your employers are busy right now; do not give them your name. 4. Make sure you know if someone is expected on the property. Always check with your employer before they leave whether they are expecting someone on the property. Please be informed that there are classes for domestic and gardeners to attend in order to be informed about crime trends. Domestic meetings are held in the various sectors on different days. Sector 1: Second Tuesday of every month at New South Vet, Biggersberg Street, Glenvista at 12:00 noon. DA WISHES THE HINDU COMMUNITY A HAPPY DIWALI Ward 56 Councillor Dennis Jane and the Democratic Alliance Boroang Branch Ward 56 extends its greetings and best wishes to the Hindu and Tamil community for the Diwali and New Year celebrations commencing on Wednesday 11 November. May each person and family have joyous and blessed greetings over this 2015 year harmonious celebrations. Let this year’s Festival of Lights illuminate your life with joy, peace and prosperity.

After a request by local residents, Ward 57 Councillor Faeeza Chame arranged, through Council, to have a set of traffic lights installed at the corner of Nephin and South Rand Road in South Hills. Since the presence of these robots, there has been a dramatic decrease in road incidents and crashes. For years the three-way stop at the corner of Nephin and South Rand Road in South Hills has put people’s lives in danger, as many drivers went through this intersection without slowing down. As a daily norm, residents would experience “near misses”. Vehicle crashes have taken place there where people have been injured. Because an unofficial culture was created of people not completely stopping at the previous threeway stop street, road rage often erupted between those motorists who did indeed respect the stop sign and those who did not.

“I received an email from the resident that had requested a robot at this intersection who expressed her satisfaction and thanks that the much needed robot was erected only two weeks after making the request,” said Cllr Chame. She added that such emails make her job worthwhile. Member of Parliament for Johannesburg South Manny de Freitas said that immediately addressing the needs of residents and the community at large means that a small problem does not become a big one. “A prime example is this matter, where our councillor did not allow the issue to develop further by putting people in continued danger,” explained de Freitas. De Freitas congratulated and thanked Cllr Chame for the tenacious and dedicated manner in which she approaches issues in the community.

I feel that I have worked hard to be ranked with the best and therefore deserve this award,” notes the pupil. “I am fully aware that he is an extremely busy man, however, this is an urgent matter as a deposit of R8 000 is due by the end of this month. I would like to ask if there is any way I can be assisted with raising the funds – a total of R42 000, excluding pocket money for the trip,” she adds. If anyone would like to assist, please contact the student on 083 480 9253.

Page 9 On Friday 25 September, 13 Marist Brothers Linmeyer learners undertook to do an International Performance Certificate with Trinity College, London. An examiner from London came to Marist Brothers Linmeyer and examined the candidates. The examiner was enormously impressed by the standard of work and loved the dynamic and honest pieces that the students presented. For this examination, a continuous performance programme must be mounted by the candidate, where they may direct another candidate to assist them, but they are assessed on their performance work alone. The students presented items ranging across a wide variety of performance styles, including monologues, duologues, musical theatre, physical theatre and poetry. On Friday 09 October, it was confirmed that six candidates had achieved a distinction for this prestigious examination, while seven were awarded merits. This examination is offered at an international level and places the learners on a par with excellent performers overseas. Marist Brothers Linmeyer would like to congratulate the students and commend them on achieving such outstanding results.

Down with illegal dumping

GREEN Candace King candace.king@tametimes.co.za The community has expressed concern regarding the high level of refuse, rubble and litter dumping throughout many of the suburbs in the South. Recently there has been an increase in illegal dumping cases, namely along Kliprivier Drive, Swartkoppies Road and in the Kibler Park area. Various members from the community have provided tame TIMES with information and photographs of the culprits who are blatantly and illegally dumping material in open spaces within the South. CLEANING UP YOUR ACT: CoJ and SOJO launched a campaign Positively, several local individuals and organisations to stop illegal dumping along Kliprivier Drive are working alongside the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) not only to clean up the community but to also raise illegal adverts. We awareness about illegal dumping. We are pleased to report this being removed and replaced with biodiversity artwork. We are grateful to Hyper Paint for sponsoring all the success story,” says SOJO CEO Nicky Vakaloudis. The identified area required thorough cleaning of household litter, grass-cutting, education on recycling, waste management and educating on health implications for the local residents. The day proved successful, says Vakaloudis, as it was mostly spent picking up litter, cutting grass and planting some trees on the pavement to help with the beautification of the area. “Sustainability is the magic word and this year on 23 September, the same team invested in the visibility of the KUBiC initiative going forward. SOJO is committed, and excited to continue delivering measurable outcomes until there is no more dumping along Kliprivier Drive. “Please come on board and help us sustain this journey. Alone we make a small difference; together we create possibilities – cleanliness is next to Godliness,” says Vakaloudis. In another anti-dumping success story, Ward 56 Councillor Dennis Jane called a meeting with Pikitup and the Health Department in order to try to solve this escalating problem. “The purpose of the meeting was to develop a pilot project that would encourage residents not to dump,” says Cllr Jane. A small area of Rosettenville bounded by Geranium, Lawn, Petunia and High Streets was to be monitored. Initially a survey was done on how many residences had 140-litre bins and if flats within the area had sufficient bins. This was followed by a door-to-door visit by Pikitup and Enviro Health staff talking to residents and delivering pamphlets aimed at using refuse bins and not dumping. Where refuse bins

were needed they will be supplied, notes Cllr Jane. While the door-to-door was being undertaken, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo cleaned the section of Oberholzer Park contained in the target area. “There will be ongoing monitoring and if the park and target area remain cleaner than the rest of the area the bin project will be expanded,” says Cllr Jane. For more information on how to help these various clean-up initiatives, contact Nicky Vakaloudis on 082 481 8746 or 011 493 7880 or email nicky@sojo.co.za. Alternatively, contact Cllr Dennis Jane on 011 435 2627 or 083 701 8856 or email dkjane@global.co.za.

JOY AT JAFTA RETIREMENT VILLAGE

On Friday 23 October, Member of Parliament for Johannesburg South Manny de Freitas and Ward 56 Councillor Dennis Jane visited the Jafta Retirement Village. De Freitas said that this visit reinforced the perception that he had had from his last visit to the place – that of a well-managed and caring retirement village. De Freitas said that it was clear that the residents of Jafta are made to feel comfortable, are well looked after and are treated with the respect that they deserve. “All too often one hears horror stories of how our senior folk are treated with disrespect and abused,” explained de Freitas, “but in the case of Jafta, all residents enjoy the highest quality of treatment in every way.” De Freitas said that this was clear from his walkabout

and interaction with the residents. Cllr Jane expressed concern at the low occupancy rate, which is about 75% instead of the required 95% – making it very difficult for Jafta to break even. Monthly expenses are at just under R1million; presently they are around R200 000 short every month. “Increasing the occupancy would close this shortfall,” he explained. De Freitas said that if more people knew about Jafta and the high standard of services it offers more applications would be forthcoming. “I hope our visit will be the start of this much needed publicity that Jafta needs,” he added. Cllr Dennis Jane said that despite the excellent services offered, Jafta’s rates continue to be very competitive and to beat those of most similar homes in the city.

Neville Peters is no stranger to our column and he brought up the important subject of pensioner rates rebates. Once again I turned to the internet and referred to the City of Johannesburg’s website for all the details. Provided you meet certain criteria – your property value cannot exceed R2million, you are the owner and living on the property and at least 60 years old, then from the ages of 60 to 69 if your gross monthly earnings are less than R7 850 a month, you may claim a 100% rebate. Pensioners whose income is higher than this but less than R13 458 a month may claim a 50% rebate. A 100% rebate is available if you are over the age of 70 and meet the same criteria. Those are the simplified and broad guidelines, but you must provide documentary evidence of your income (use a tax return) and complete a

pensioner application form or you may download this form from the same website. The only point I’m unsure about is, does the income criteria include the amount of combined pensions? Neville, it may interest you to know as a follow-up to my ‘Winter of My Discontent’ article, complaining of crazy price increases on my water and lights account, a couple of weeks ago I found two gentlemen from the electricity department at my gate. They were there to install a new smart meter – which they duly did – most efficiently and politely, I might add, and then left me with a little gadget, an IHD102 Customer Interface Unit, which I have to have plugged in at all times to be able to read and check on my electrical usage. Quite a coincidence, I thought, but let us hope it does the job and gives reliable and accurate electricity billing.
