What is Oral Placement Therapy? Oral Placement Therapy is a speech & feeding therapy which utilizes a combination of: 1. auditory stimulation 2. visual stimulation 3. tactile stimulation to the mouth. OPT is an important addition to traditional speech treatment methods for clients with placement and movement deficits. Traditional therapy is primarily auditory and visual - but OPT accompanies traditional therapy with a tactile-procrioceptive teaching technique.
TalkTools® was founded by Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson, MS, CCC-SLP in 1995. As she finished with her studies and began her work as a Speech-Language Pathologist, Sara felt she did not have all the information or tools she needed to successfully help clients. So, she began creating her own tools and techniques. Fast-forward to today: TalkTools trains over 5,000 therapists internationally and helps improve the lives of over 100,000 kiddos and families every year.
Who benefits from OPT? OPT can be used with individuals of many ages (from birth to geriatric/rehabilitative) and ability levels in diversified work settings including early intervention, schools, hospitals, clinics, private practices, homes and assisted living facilities. Therapists and parents have found OPT to be effective with a variety of populations and diagnoses, including but not limited to Down syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Childhood Apraxia of Speech, Tethered Oral Tissue, cleft lip and palate and more.
How does it work? OPT targets speech-like movements by using oral structure placement. OPT is a modern-day approach in which the therapist uses tools to shape the articulators in order to produce a target phoneme. Once the client can achieve the phonemes, the tools and cues are faded out and speech is worked on. OPT is supported by clinical data, patient feedback and the principles of motor learning and muscle physiology directly. Visit TalkTools.com/Publications for EBP. TalkTools provides the necessary tools, training and techniques to learn OPT and help your clients & kiddos.

"A life-saving treatment tool. While this is #1501 ORIGINAL #1505 SMALL
the best tool for teaching straw drinking and getting the tongue retracted, I have used it extensively in my practice to get calories into kiddos that were losing weight or not gaining any weight. As a side note...I’ve given them away to families with relatives that have late stage Alzheimer’s and have had those same people thank me for allowing their loved ones to still “eat”. It’s about quality and this product is that!" - KATHLEEN
“The Honey Bear is hands down my favorite tool. I used it for years as a therapist to teach straw drinking. Then when I became a mom, I purchased one for my son to use with him. He loved it as much as I did!” – A LI CI A
“The Honey Bear is awesome! It’s allowed me to teach hundreds of kiddos to drink from a straw! It’s a necessity in any therapist's tool box! Watch out for look-alikes because they just don’t work the same way. This one is the only one I recommend!” – HE ATHER TALKTOOLS.COM • SECTION NAME
