TALISKER HOME: ENVISIONING THE POSSIBILITIES
HOMESITE #28 Lot 28 at Red Cloud slopes gently to the north, with views to the northeast and southeast across the ski run and to the high plateau beyond. It is rare to find a ski-in/ski-out site that is gentle enough to support a ‘courtyard home’, in particular this combination of buildings that allows for indoor/outdoor living.
CONCEPT SITE PLAN The open organic courtyard faces due south and is protected from the winds by a slightly rising hill to the south, which is covered with Alpine Fir and Aspen trees. This combination of mature growth at 9,000 feet altitude is rare, and it is important to take measure to ensure they will remain healthy.
RED CLOUD HOMESITE #28 CONCEPT
RED CLOUD HOMESITE #28 CONCEPT
HOMESITE #28 With large panes of glass taking in the views to the north and east, it is still a sustainable home with an airtight envelope. The sod roofs add to the organic nature of the building and reduce its long term heating and cooling costs. The concept we have created for Lot 28 is designed to be a four season home, with opportunities for family gatherings at the summer solstice as well the winter equinox. Multiple terraces and organic gardens, planted with native species such as Bloom Grass, Indian Paintbrush, and Juniper add to the richness of the experience. The window glazing is high performance low e glass with nighttime energy shades, as well as overhangs to control the variation in the seasonal sun angle.
RED CLOUD HOMESITE #28 EXTERIOR
HOMESITE #28 One approaches the home via a short drive through a narrow grouping of trees, which then opens up to a low series of gable roofs separated by sod roofs. The various sections of the building are linked by a series of porches with stone columns. The primary service entrance is adjacent to the garage, with mechanical rooms accessed from that area. The second service area functions as a ski room/seasonal recreational use room. This area also serves as a drop offfor groceries going to the pantry and a pick-up point if one is headed for an adventure off site.

HOMESITE #1
With its mountain-top position at 9,000 feet elevation, Lot One at Red Cloud receives unencumbered sunlight and solar gain, as well as views of the Mt. Timpanogos, arcing uninterrupted from the northeast to the southwest. This design concept follows along the natural contour of the slope, using a narrow proportion that allows natural light to penetrate all rooms and a thermal mass to warm the floors of the home. Â
RED CLOUD HOMESITE #1
DESIGN CONCEPT This design concept features living spaces that are set back away from the far edge of the terrace wall, so that from inside the view of Mt. Timpanogos is unencumbered. The terraces are composed of stone, grass and wildflowers; with a small stream that originates to the east just outside the primary dining room and flows west through the lower terrace and outside the game room, culminating in a natural pool framed by red rocks. At 9,000 feet elevation native growth is slow, so an emphasis should be placed on quick-growing Aspens, with sufficient irrigation; and wildflowers such as Indian Paintbrush, Broome Grass and Wild Bluebells.

KITCHEN CONCEPT The kitchen offers views uphill to the east, as well as due west to the Mt. Timpanogos beyond the terrace. The breakfast nook receives morning light, as well as capturing beautiful westerly views. The nook has a built-in bench and table for 8-10 people. The kitchen itself is serviced by a 5’x12’ working island, with all the anticipated amenities such as drawer coolers, wine storage, range, trash disposal, bar sink and so forth. The service pantry contains the refrigerator and freezer, as well as longterm storage, ovens and service ware.
