LOOK! The jagged edges of a broken bike frame became a billboard for safety at El Tour de
Tucson’s Expo last November. Firefighter Brendan Lyon’s body and bike were broken when he was hit by a car on February 11, 2011. The accident inspired him and few friends to start LOOK! Save a Life Arizona, an organization dedicated to preventing bike accidents by educating both cyclists and drivers. “Brendan had just gotten that new bike, and it was a really nice one, then he got hit,” recalls mentor and friend Jean Gorman. It takes a long time for someone to come back from any accident, she said, “and that’s why his message is so important: to try to

Save a Life Arizona Targets Cyclists And Drivers
get people to understand that life is precious, and we’re all responsible for the safety of others.” “As a firefighter and EMT with Rural-Metro, I’ve seen in person what happens when a vehicle hits a cyclist,” Lyons, who has recovered from the accident, said. LOOK! Save a Life is not just a onesided attack on bad driving: “I also want to educate cyclists. A lot of drivers don’t bike, so they don’t understand. As a driver, I see bad cycling behavior too—wrong way, no helmets.” According to the Tucson Bicycle Crash Database (www.Bikecolli.com), the most common bicycle accident in Tucson involves a bicyclist riding the wrong way on the sidewalk or street, and a motorist turning right from a side street or a driveway. The motorist is looking left at traffic and doesn’t expect an approaching bicyclist coming from the right. Almost 23 percent of Tucson area crashes are of this type, where both the bicyclist and the driver are responsible. In 2011, there were a total of 436 bike crashes. Lyons was hit when he was riding with traffic, in a bike lane, when a car passed him then turned right and hit him. A group of Boise, Idaho friends started the national LOOK! Save a Life campaign (www.looksavealife.com) to honor a cycling friend who was killed when hit by a car. Lyons determined that the El Tour de Tucson Expo would be a perfect place to kick-off his Arizona organization. “There were thousands of people there,” he remembered. “I talked to cyclists and quite a few drivers who don’t ride bikes, all kinds of people.” He partnered with the national group to give away free stickers, and sell water bottles and jerseys with the LOOK! Save a Life message. Former pro cyclist Melanie Colavito, who now uses her bike for transportation in Tucson, proudly
sported a LOOK! Save a Life sticker on her jacket at the Expo. “I like the all-inclusive message, it will benefit drivers and cyclists alike,” she says. “It’s not like one group is better than the other. I think it will be well-received.” Colavito raced pro for a few years with the Landis-Trek team and spent 20 to 30 hours per week training on the road. “I’ve experienced first hand what happens when cyclists and drivers are not aware of what’s around them.” A graduate student in geography at The University of Arizona, Colavito said, “Getting around the university area can be pretty exciting on a bike, with so many bicyclists, skateboarders, pedestrians, and drivers not always paying attention.” Lyons plans to take the message beyond stickers and slogans. “I want stricter laws and stiffer penalties for drivers who hit bicyclists.” He believes the current Arizona laws are too lax: if a driver injures a cyclist, there’s a $500 fine, if the cyclist is killed, it’s a $1000 fine. He points out, “The law for feeding wildlife is $2,500, and it’s not right to have lower fines for hurting people.” For Lyons, education is a personal mission. “I personally will be lobbying state legislators and contacting Arizona Department of Transportation and Department of Motor Vehicles to make sure the no texting and driving law is statewide, and that drivers know about the three-foot law.” Currently the texting ban is the law in just two Arizona cities: Phoenix and Tucson. The three-foot law requires that drivers allow at least three feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist. Lyons pointed out that his organization’s Facebook page has over 1400 Likes, but he’s not content with online interaction. Lyons wants to talk with new drivers, “My main audience is high school drivers and I plan to talk to local schools next year.” The organization also will look for opportunities to partner with other organizations like Tucson Medical Center’s helmet give-away program, and Lyons is exploring ways to work with Pima County and City of Tucson bicycle and pedestrian programs. non-profits like Living Streets Alliance, the Greater Arizona Bicycle Association, and the B.R.A.D. (Bicyclists Ride Alongside Drivers) Fund. B.R.A.D. Fund founder Jean Gorman said she had about a dozen riders wearing the bold red and white “I am NOT a TARGET” bike jerseys in El Tour de Tucson. Wendy Adkisson, a Tucson police officer, wore an “I am NOT a TARGET” jersey that also stated “Be careful my daughter loves me.” Gorman said the LOOK! Save a Life Arizona message is important for everyone: “Brendan has been a friend for several years and worked with us on the B.R.A.D. Fund. We look forward to continuing to work with him in the future.”
LOOK! Save A Life Arizona Messages TO DRIVERS: • Must give at least 3 feet of clearance when passing a cyclist, whether or not a bike lane is present. • Do not text and drive (Keep distractions at bay, i.e. changing radio, distractions with passengers) • It is illegal to swerve at, buzz, or throw things at bicyclists. TO CYCLISTS: • Wear your helmet • Obey all the same traffic laws & signs/signals as motorists.
