ABOUT TAILWATERS TRAVEL OUR TRAVEL SERVICES ARE FREE OF CHARGE!
YOU THE CLIENT DON’T PAY A PENNY FOR OUR TRAVEL SERVICES! Our destination recommendations, organization, and pre-trip planning services are completely free of charge – and oftentimes less expensive than booking direct with a lodge or outfitter. We can assist with every question, concern, or special request related to your adventure at zero cost!
WE HAVE BEEN THERE
We do not send our clients to any destination we have not visited ourselves. From the remote rivers of the Kamchatka Peninsula, the marshes of Southern Louisiana, to the sandy flats of the Seychelles, we have experienced the travel involved, eaten the food, fished with the guides, understand the seasonality, and exactly what gear and tackle is most productive.
FINDING THE DESTINATION THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU
Whether you are looking for a family holiday, a long weekend getaway, or a hard-core fish camp, we have assembled a catalog of destinations that fits the billing. Super exotic trips to far-off spots like Seychelles, Patagonia, or Bolivia are today’s cutting edge epic adventures, while the beachfront home in the Bahamas with tailing bonefish out back may be what you are after. The affordable three-day trip to Louisiana for trophy redfish is a home-run, specialized permit fishing trips may be on the menu, or a mountain destination with loads of non-angling activities for the whole family is an option. We have the first-hand experience and personal relationships in place to send you and your group to the right spot at the right time of year.
NOT EVERYTHING TO EVERYONE
We do not pretend to be the experts on every single fishery or fishing lodge on the planet. Some competing agents will list dozens of lodges or outfitters in a single region. We know from over fifteen years experience there is no way to maintain a sincere or realistic connection with a specific lodge with such a cumbersome catalog of offerings. Managers, politics, food, travel logistics, guides, the health of the fishery, and personal relationships change at fishing lodges often! Tailwaters takes a less is more approach by choosing to represent the best of the best operators in the business. Tight relationships and legitimate partnerships with our operators ensure our clients are properly paired up with a destination at the top of its game. What’s the point of offering two dozen fly-out lodges in Alaska when you can cherry pick the best? We are not the Wal-Mart of the fly-fishing travel industry – and don’t want to be.
BEST PRE-TRIP PLANNING IN THE BUSINESS
When you book a trip with us you will receive one of our destination specific pre-trip planner & outfitting guides. These comprehensive packets contain everything from maps to gear & tackle recommendations, information about commercial travel arrangements, lodge policy, country information, itinerary, travel insurance and much more. Our outfitting guides have been meticulously prepared to provide you with the most informative and up to date pre-trip planning reference in the industry. Although we are always on call at the office, our outfitting guides are the ultimate go-to resource for questions or concerns about planning your trip. YOU WONT FIND A MORE THOROUGH, INFORMATIVE, OR USEFUL PRE-TRIP ANYWHERE

ALASKA RAINBOW LODGE // ALASKA $9850
7 NIGHTS / 6 DAYS FISHING
// (INCLUDES CHARTERS FROM ANCHORAGE)
A
laska Rainbow Lodge is located in the heart of Alaska’s best trout and salmon region, thirty-five miles north of King Salmon, AK. Alaska legend Ron Hayes built the lodge in 1982 on the Kvichak River -- one of the most famous trophy rainbow trout rivers in the world. Hayes’ intimate knowledge of the scores of fishable rivers and lakes in the Bristol Bay region, and willingness to fly to all of them, earned Alaska Rainbow Lodge the reputation of providing the best fly-out service in Alaska. Now operated by native Texans Chip and Amanda Ferguson, Alaska Rainbow Lodge continues to put clients in the right place at the right time, regardless of which species the client chooses to target. In addition to trophy rainbows, the area’s waters receive huge runs of all five species of Pacific salmon, and are home to arctic char, dolly varden, grayling, northern pike, and lake trout. But while clients have seemingly endless fly-out options, many choose not to fly every day and instead target world-class rainbows on the lodge’s home river, the Kvichak. Comfortable accommodations in five double occupancy bedrooms with private baths plus three private bedroom duplex cabins allow a maximum of sixteen guests -- intimate by Alaskan standards. The picturesque lodge perched on a bluff overlooking the Kvichak features an outdoor gazebo, a large common area with a fully stocked bar, outstanding food, wifi internet and telephone access. Two professional chefs prepare gourmet meals that are perhaps the best we have sampled at any fishing lodge anywhere in the world! With its location, superb fly-out program, excellent guides, inviting accommodations, scrumptious cuisine, and storied history, Alaska Rainbow Lodge has it all. NOTE: Historic fly-out program on the famed Kvichak River with new ownership. Freshest Alaska lodge in our catalog and quickly one of our favorites. SEASONALITY: Open June - September

deally located in the heart of Alaska’s best trout and salmon fisheries just outside of King Salmon, AK, Rapids Camp Lodge has earned the reputation of being one of the premier Western Alaska fly-out operations. ounded in 1972, Bristol Bay Lodge sits on a wooded rise overlooking Lake Aleknagik and the surrounding mountains of Wood-TikChik Park. The lodge presides over a quiet scenic bay some forty air miles northwest of the small and remote town of Dillingham. Bristol Bay Lodge is perhaps the most upscale fly-out lodge in the famous Dillingham area, and is an excellent candidate for ladies, families, and hard-core anglers alike. The lodge has fine tuned a fishing program that maximizes the opportunities in terms of variety of rivers fished, species caught and even methods of fishing during any given week. If you want the full Alaskan experience, seeing lots of different rivers and catching many species in one day, BBL is right up your alley. Bristol Bay Lodge offers a totally unique opportunity for guests to enjoy two intimate, comfortable outpost camps on very rare private water. ROYAL COACHMAN LODGE // ALASKA $9500
7 NIGHTS / 6 DAYS FISHING
T
he Royal Coachman Lodge is located in the heart of the world famous Bristol Bay region of Southwest Alaska. The lodge sits on the banks of the Nuyakuk River in the middle of the Wood River Tikchik State Park. “The Coachman’s” approach to fly-out fishing in Alaska is to provide a very small and intimate guest and angling experience – with private access to some of Alaska’s best fisheries. Unlike most lodges that operate with 20-30 guests per week, Royal Coachman maxes out at 10-12 guests. Couple the small guest load with an awesome home river, two Beaver aircraft, and nine exclusive use permits on world class rivers inside the park and refuge, and guests enjoy solitude and well rested fishing. High-end Alaska lodges these days oftentimes target the same productive areas – and congested rivers are too often a complaint. Not so with Royal Coachman. Anglers can expect no crowds as well as a very flexible and customizable fishing program each and every week. The lodge sits on a grandfathered property with a class five rapid above and below the lodge, and no roads within 60 miles. You can only get to the lodge by float plane. This means if the weather prohibits flying you will still enjoy great fishing on the Nuyakuk. It also means that when you are sitting at the fire pit looking over the river watching the sunset, you will never see another boat go by.
NOTE: Perhaps the highest repeat booking rate in Alaska so be prepared to be put on the wait list! Coachman’s exclusive water and 10-12 guest max is worth the wait. SEASONALITY: Open June - early October

UNALAKLEET RIVER LODGE // ALASKA $5300
6 NIGHTS / 5 DAYS FISHING
// BASED ON SHARED ROOM / GUIDE
T
he Unalakleet River is one of Alaska’s best kept secrets. It is the lodge you go to when you simply want to indiscriminately catch A LOT of big fish. It is the perfect venue for anglers seeking a remote lodge as well as constant and productive fishing for salmon, dolly varden, arctic char, and grayling. If you are looking for an affordable Alaskan wilderness experience where there is a bend in your rod all day — look no further than Unalakleet River Lodge. The Unalakleet boasts one of the most prolific silver (coho) and pink (humpy) runs in Alaska. Pinks make for great fun on a five or six weight, and are perfect for beginners or smaller children. During the peak season for silvers, catching 40-80 fish a day in the 7-12 pound range is common. Chum salmon are around a good part of the season in prolific numbers, and the early season Chinook fishing is very reliable. Add grayling on large dry flies, colorful char and sea run dollies to the mix, and anglers enjoy a week with continuous fishing success. The village of Unalakleet is located 400 miles northwest of Anchorage in a very remote corner of Alaska… almost a world away from the hectic and often crowded fly-out fisheries to the south. Unalakleet River Lodge is the only operation on the entire river system, with over ninety miles of spring creek-like river and multiple gin clear tributaries — providing a level of exclusivity and privacy that is very rare in Alaska these days.
NOTE: Tried and true salmon, char and grayling factory – and a river all to yourself in far NW Alaska. Unalakleet is perfect for anglers of all skill levels. SEASONALITY: Open June - September

NUSHAGAK CAMPS // ALASKA $5995
7 NIGHTS / 6 DAYS FISHING
// BASED ON SHARED ROOM / GUIDE
T
his no-frills approach to Alaska puts the emphasis on great wilderness fishing. There are still places in Alaska to fish in total solitude; where you have the river all to yourself. Founded in the 1982, Dave and Kim Egdorf’s camp is still the way Alaska used to be… Nothing has changed, and the upper Nushagak is still stuffed with two to five pound rainbows, along with more char and grayling than a fly fisherman can count. A week on the upper Nush consists of solitude, red hot fishing, and good company at the day’s end. Guests enjoy all the creature comforts imaginable for such a remote camp. The 100 river miles of fly water available from camp is made up mostly of shallow, gravel-bottomed, fish-filled riffles and runs. While the lower 40 miles of the Nush are accessible to everyone, there’s just one place on the upper river where a plane can land, and it takes a special kind of aircraft to do it. There are no man-made trails leading to or through the woods here; no 4-wheeler tracks, and certainly no roads. Totally remote and isolated rainbow trout fishing and a true wilderness experience – yet at a very affordable price point.
NOTE: Old school Alaska in a permanent camp and completely off the grid with no crowds – the way Alaska used to be. SEASONALITY: Open June - September

UPLAND ANGLER LODGE // MONTANA $2250
5 NIGHTS / 4 DAYS FISHING
// BASED ON SHARED ROOM / GUIDE
T
ailwaters Travel does not represent many lodges in the western U.S. because they rarely combine all essential ingredients to meet our standards: comfortable accommodations, good food and other amenities, responsible and trustworthy managers and staff, reasonable travel logistics, high quality guides, and of course excellent fly fishing opportunities. That is why we are so excited to discover Upland Angler Lodge. While we do not have a ton of history with Upland Angler yet, we believe that it offers all of the above and more. Located between Great Falls and Helena on a blue ribbon section of the Missouri River, it is easy to get to. Its management and ownership are outstanding. The cuisine is delectable. The lodge manages to be both rustic and luxurious in a gorgeous natural setting. The guides are great and the fishing is out of this world, virtually year-round. On top of all that, the lodge is adjacent to some really interesting historical sites; it is on Lewis & Clark’s route and the famous bridge from the movie Untouchables is within walking distance. The fishing on the Missouri and several tributaries in the area offers a good variety within easy driving distance. The Missouri itself has three distinct sections with completely different character -- an upper section, middle canyon section, and lower section with spring creek qualities. This variety also means a broad range of fishing scenarios, from straightforward presentations perfect for beginners to technical situations that will challenge the most experienced trout angler. These sections of the Missouri are tailwaters, which means it is almost never “blown out” and has relatively consistent flows year-round. These waters also support prolific hatches, leading to wonderful dry fly fishing. Best of all, these sections of the Missouri boast an unbelievable number of browns & rainbows over 20 inches. We really do feel that Upland angler has it all. NOTE: It should cost much more to stay at a historic property with this level of service and fish a Blue Ribbon section of the Missouri. Destined to become one of our most popular trips. 16

KAMCHATKA PENINSULA // RUSSIAN FAR EAST $6850 - $7850
6 NIGHTS / 5 DAYS FISHING

W
ords simply cannot describe the world-class trout fishing, the adventure, or cultural education experienced on a trip to the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia. It is impossible to convey the feeling of excitement when the engines are lit on the Russian made Mi-8 helicopter bound for one of the most remote and seldom fished trout streams on Earth. The Kamchatka Peninsula is without question one of the most special wildernesses remaining on the planet. Kamchatka is a true peninsula approximately the same size as California with only 375,000 residents (less than one person per square kilometer). There is no development, no roads, no logging, no pollution, no poaching, and certainly zero fishing pressure. In many ways the Kamchatka Peninsula is very similar to Alaska, only without the crowds or the development. It is a place of breathtaking beauty and unique wildlife, mixing striking scenery of mountains, active volcanoes, tundra, forests and rugged coastline. Tailwaters represents diverse fishing programs in three separate regions of Kamchatka. Whether it is high volume dry fly and mouse fishing on a perfect spring creek, or swinging flies on a larger freestone for enormous JUMBO sized Rainbows in the 30+ inch range (or a little of both)— Kamchatka offers a setting, accommodation type, and style of fishing for every type of angler. Less than forty anglers a year fish our rivers for a short eight-week season. The historical and political significance of this formerly Soviet naval hotbed is a perspective jolt for even the most adventurous traveler. Our Russian Outfitters have been rock solid for over ten years, and deliver a safe and organized program in one of the worlds most remote and beautiful wildernesses. Tailwaters has been involved with the fishing programs in Kamchatka since 2003, and understand the ins and outs of traveling, exploring, and fishing this rainbow trout fantasy-land. NOTE: Perhaps the greatest wilderness and rainbow trout fishing experience imaginable – only 4.5 hours non-stop from Anchorage! SEASONALITY: Open mid July - early September

l Saltamontes is one of the oldest and most polished fly fishing lodges in Chile. Also a 5,000 acre working cattle ranch, El Saltamontes offers a perfectly managed fishing program with a legitimate private ranch lifestyle. It might be the most upscale and luxurious lodge in the region, and yields some of the most consistent walk and wade dry fly fishing in Patagonia. True to its name, El Saltamontes (“the grasshopper”) offers up consistent hopper fishing most of the summer. The ranch’s home river, Rio Nireguao, is one of the world’s most tailor-made river systems for fishing terrestrials nearly an entire season. Traditional dry fly fishing here and on the ranch’s smaller creeks is also very dependable.
The rich tradition of El Saltamontes is synonymous with Chilean fly fishing. The Gorronos family practically started the “lodge” concept in Chile, and have it down to a science. The superb lodge is nestled in a beautiful river valley and is luxurious, by any angling standards. Each of the nine guest rooms have private baths, and magnificent views. A small and intimate experience, El Saltamontes allows only eight to ten fishermen and four non-anglers each week of its short season. A legitimate horseback riding program is also a huge bonus for non-anglers interested in stunning rides through the Andes. If you are seeking a really nice place to entertain your spouse or non-angling companion, El Saltamontes should definitely be at the top of the list.
NOTE: Smaller private water, a gorgeous ranch, and all the foamy high floating terrestrial and dry fly fishing you could ask for. SEASONALITY: Open January - April

ago Strobel, or “Jurassic Lake,” is located 4.5 hours from the closest airport of El Calafate, Argentina . . . right smack in the middle of nowhere! Jurassic is a massive lake stocked decades ago with rainbow trout that have evolved to enormous sizes by feeding on the huge populations of scud and baitfish. It is a one-of-a-kind destination where the average sized rainbow weighs in at a solid ten pounds, and fish exceeding twenty pounds are brought to hand each season. The size of the fish earned Jurassic fame in the fly fishing world, but the style of fishing -- often sight casting to cruising fish in crystal clear water -- is what brings anglers back year after year. Guests at Laguna Verde enjoy the world-class fishing on Lago Strobel as well as private access to Moro creek and another dozen smaller lakes on the property – all loaded with huge rainbows. Additionally, exclusive access to the Barrancoso River is a tremendous bonus for anglers when fish congregate at its mouth, often yielding excellent sight casting opportunities for dinosaur-sized ‘bows on foamy dry flies.
Estancia Laguna Verde is the only traditional lodge near Jurassic Lake. Whereas competing operations put up tent camps on the shores of the lake, guests at Laguna Verde enjoy all the amenities expected at a proper fishing lodge. In addition to five spacious bedrooms with private baths, the lodge has a lovely dining room and bar, outdoor wooden deck, and a wader drying room.
NOTE: Comfortable lodge on the famed Lago Strobel – home to the largest rainbows on the planet. Easily combined with a trip to Tierra del Fuego. SEASONALITY: Open November - April

ierra del Fuego (“Land of Fire”) is literally located at the end of the earth on the southern tip of South America – only a few hundred miles from Antarctica. The Rio Grande River is the most popular sea-run brown trout river in the world. Estancia Maria Behety operates two separate lodges on the same massive property: The main EMB Lodge and the luxuriously restored mansion called La Villa Maria Behety. The fences of the Estancia Maria Behety surround 275,000 acres (495 square miles) of cattle and sheep grazing country. Both lodges are within minutes of more than 100 of the finest pools on the river.
The brown trout of Tierra del Fuego return to their natal waters on the Rio Grande River to spawn each year, offering an incredible opportunity for anglers to catch some of the largest and liveliest brown trout on earth! Fish average 10 – 14 lbs, and experienced fly rodders usually hook about a half dozen per day. Trophy fish in excess of 20 pounds are not uncommon and about one in 50 is a monster pushing 30 pounds or more. Shallow, wide and slow moving with a gravel bottom, the Rio Grande is a simple river to wade, easy water to read – and is perfect habitat for swinging flies with heavy single handed or spey rods. For good reasons, the two Estancia Maria Behety lodges are rated by veterans as the finest on the river.
NOTE: The go-to sea-run brown trout lodge with the most coveted beats of the Rio Grande and the best Tierra del Fuego has to offer. SEASONALITY: Open December - mid April

TSIMANE LODGES & CAMPS // BOLIVIA $5380 - $7600
7 NIGHTS / 6 DAYS FISHING
// DEPENDING ON CAMP SELECTION
E
xotic fly fishing destinations like Tsimane don’t come around very often. Rarely do all the essential ingredients meld to create a true “once in a lifetime” fishing trip. Pristine wilderness, complete remoteness, luxurious lodging, a top-notch outfitter, stunning scenery with abundant wildlife, and absolutely jaw-dropping fishing opportunities for the ultimate badass predatory gamefish. Tsimane’s rivers not only hold huge dorado (averaging almost 15 lbs and growing up to 30 lbs), but allow anglers to pursue them -- often sight casting -- while wading pristine freestone mountain rivers. This awesome species truly offers it all: size, aggression, power, and challenge, all in a breathtakingly beautiful setting. To top it all off, Tsimane’s waters hold three other species of exotic gamefish for the fly angler, including the highly sought after pacu, the “permit of the jungle.” Tsimane is located in a Bolivian national park and indigenous territory where the Andes Mountains meet the Amazon Jungle. It is only accessible by charter flights to a remote airstrip in the heart of the jungle. Tsimane Indians serve as camp staff and guides, proudly demonstrating their traditional techniques for surviving and thriving in the jungle. Interaction with these people and their culture from another era is often described as a highlight of the trip. Tsimane now operates three different lodge options -- Pluma Lodge, Secure Lodge, and Agua Negra Lodge. All three programs run 7 night / 6 day fishing itineraries with a well managed beat rotation system. Simply put, Tsimane offers the most unique and impressive golden dorado fishing on the planet, in a wild wilderness jungle experience unlike anything else available today. NOTE: So often referred to as “the coolest trip I have ever been on”, Tsimane defines the greatest jungle fishing adventure possible for the true bad-ass of all freshwater fish. RIO MARIÉ // BRAZIL $7325
8 NIGHTS / 6 DAYS FISHING
// BASED ON SHARED ROOM / GUIDE
T
he waters of the Rio Marié system are home to incredible numbers of peacock bass and the largest peacock bass in the world — by a wide margin. This is due in part to the hyper-remote location, deep inside the most pristine part of the Amazon jungle. The Rio Marié system has more than 500 miles of fishable water with exclusive, fly fishing-only access. The program’s home base is a mobile, luxurious, technologically advanced yacht that moves to new water every day. Unlike virtually all other peacock bass destinations, this incredible mobility allows the operation to fish the entire watershed, effectively manage water level fluctuations, and keep fishing pressure nonexistent. Local peoples have long referred to the Marié as the “Rio de Gigantes” (“River of Giants”), but it was only recently “discovered” by the international angling community as the best peacock bass fishery on earth. The Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) and the intrepid fly fishermen at Untamed Angling (the same outfitters who introduced the world to Tsimane in Bolivia) made several exploratory biological studies of the river system. The studies revealed that the average Rio Marié peacock bass is 15 pounds, and the population of 20+ pound peacocks is higher than anywhere else in the Amazon, or in the world. Each angling skiff is operated by both a native guide who knows the water intimately, and a top-notch international fly fishing professional. The perfectly designed fishing program is paired with deluxe accommodations, experienced managers, chefs who create the perfect mix of local and international dishes to go along with fine accommodations and services, virgin waters that hold the last bastion of giant peacock bass, and perfected techniques to pursue them on a fly rod. NOTE: Finally an exclusive, reliable and remote trophy peacock bass fishery set on board a luxurious new houseboat and 800 kilometers of well rested Amazon basin. SEASONALITY: September - January

L
ike the entire lineup of Untamed Angling’s programs, Kendjam is incredibly unique and remote. It is a destination for anglers willing to trade luxury for true adventure to the Brazilian Amazon on the headwaters of the Iriri River. The Iriri is brand new to fly anglers, previously explored and fished only by the native Kayapo Indians. Kendjam is a multi-species program offering something very rare for Brazil, a super clear water fishery where sight fishing is the rule. Variety is the name of the game, more so than any other fishery in the Amazon. There are opportunities for over ten species including peacock bass, matrinxã, piranha, wolf fish, a variety of pacu species, and if luck is on your side, payara. Fishing methods vary from stripping streamers in pools and around structure for peacocks or wolf fish, to dead drifting terrestrials to rising pacu and matrinxã, to swinging large flies in heavy current for payara. The river system has a wide variety of structure, allowing anglers to experience a different style of fishing daily. The wildlife and landscapes are equally impressive, with awesome bird life and the occasional leopard or tapir. The Kayapo people still don traditional face/body paint and colorful headdresses, adding an unforgettable cultural element to the trip. Accommodations are very comfortable considering the remote location deep in the jungle. Guests stay in double occupancy safari style tents, with comfortable beds, electricity, fans, and a fully functional bathroom with hot/cold water. If you want a serious wilderness adventure with plenty of species variety, Kendjam is your place!
NOTE: This one is not for sissies! Kendjam is the definition of remote and adventurous – with over ten jungle species to target sight fishing gin clear moving river on light tackle. SEASONALITY: May - November

I
sla Holbox (pronounced HOLE-BOSH) is a small remote island located in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo on the most northerly tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. Holbox offers a slow paced and charming atmosphere with stunning beaches, sandy streets, a couple of hotels, and a half dozen restaurants. The lodge sits directly on the secluded white sand beach just a ten minute walk from the center of town and is a completely updated and modernized facility that will accommodate up to ten anglers in five comfortable air conditioned rooms. The island is approximately twenty miles long and is composed of vast inland flats and mangrove lined lagoons — perfect habitat for juvenile tarpon & snook. This nursery fishery and reliable summertime adult tarpon fishery combine to create a year round, quiet, and affordable alternative for the serious tarpon angler exhausted with the overpriced and crowded Florida Keys. Anglers run in comfortable panga style boats approximately ten – twenty minutes in search of large schools of adult tarpon from May – September. On a flat day anglers usually encounter schools of rolling, cruising, and feeding adults in the 60 – 180 pound range. 95% of the fishing is done sight casting to pods of fish on or close to the surface. This “run and gun” style of fishing is super exciting and unique for even the most experienced tarpon pros.
NOTE: White Mayan Riviera beaches and just the right amount of tourism coupled with consistent summertime adult migratory tarpon fishing. SEASONALITY: Year-round with the peak June - September NOTES: 42

TARPON TOWN ANGLERS // CAMPECHE $2490
5 NIGHTS / 4 DAYS FISHING
// SHORTER & LONGERTRIPS AVAILABLE
T
he fishing features more that eighty miles of mangrove coast with hundreds of creeks and channels. Campeche is exclusively a juvenile tarpon fishery, and is considered on of the world’s most consistent and prolific baby tarpon destinations. There are very few tarpon exceeding 30-40 pounds… but lots of juvenile fish! The two main venues are the shore or backcountry mangrove fishing for 5-15 pounders on 7-8 weights, and turtle grass flats (812 feet deep) for schools of cruising fish in the 20-40 pound range. The backcountry tarpon fishing is extremely productive and lots of fun with topwater, tons of fish, and good sport on small rods. The turtle grass flats are a bit of a boat run and you need good conditions to pull it off, but this is really a special part of the fishery if it comes together. It is really cool to hop on the boat right in the heart of a busy city built on the waterfront. When you get the right conditions you will get exhausted with catching little tarpon. The old Spanish colonial town of Campeche is located on the western side of the Yucatan Peninsula on the Gulf of Mexico and the Sea of Campeche. With approximately 350,000 inhabitants, Campeche offers a cultural experience unlike any other in the Caribbean angling community. The area is rich in both Mayan and Spanish colonial history, and the city has been named a UNESCO world heritage site. Stunning 17th century architecture, lively markets, incredible hospitality, great seafood, little tourism, nearby Mayan Ruins, and a remarkably clean and safe city make Campeche a delightful place to explore between fishing sessions. Tarpon Town Anglers is owned and operated by Raul Castaneda. Raul is the consummate host who ensures every aspect of your time fishing and experience in Campeche exceeds your expectations.
NOTE: Charming, clean, affordable, and safe colonial city and perhaps the best baby tarpon fishery out there. You will be sick of catching sábalitos after a few days in Tarpon Town. SEASONALITY: Year-round

FARAWAY CAYES // HONDURAS $9550
7 NIGHTS / 6 DAYS FISHING
T
he Faraway Cayes of Honduras is a permit fishery so remote it is not on Google Earth. The only way to get there is by helicopter. It is full of fish, as one would expect in a pristine flats environment in the heart of the Caribbean. Each of our clients who made the trip in the inaugural 2018 season said, without hesitation, that it was the best permit fishery he had ever seen. Fly Fish Guanaja has solved the logistical riddle of running a first class fly fishing operation so far out, doing so with plenty of style, awesome accommodations, cuisine, and other amenities given the ultra-remote location. The program runs from March until the first week of June. During those three months, a max of five anglers fish the Faraway Cayes only four days per week, with an entire week off every month. The other two fishing days each week are spent on Guanaja, an impressive permit fishery in its own right, with big bonefish, triggerfish, tarpon, and other species as well. The short season and limit of five anglers per week make this program very exclusive and translates to a tiny fraction of the traffic on the flats compared to virtually all other permit fisheries. Only a few very lucky anglers will be able to experience Faraway Cayes firsthand. What they will find is excellent permit, bonefish, and triggerfish fishing, and a wild adventure with no other fly fishermen for hundreds of miles in any direction.
NOTE: The 2018 film “Beyond the Horizon helped make Faraway Cayes one of the hottest saltwater destinations on earth. But there is no hype out there, only solitude and flats filled with uneducated fish. SEASONALITY: March - early June

lue Horizon is a fly fishing operation located in “Permit Alley” near Placencia, Belize. The fishery is huge and the permit fishing as good as anywhere. The flats are easily the most beautiful of any permit-centric destination. Almost every flat is ringed with scuba-quality coral. And almost every flat is topped with happy, tailing permit.
Legendary permit guide Lincoln Westby founded the operation decades ago and, at 76 years young, is still putting anglers on permit with amazing consistency, along with the guide team he personally trained. Westby and his team practice a conservation ethic that should be a model for guides everywhere, treating the flats and fish with utmost care. This philosophy ensures a healthy fishery and happy permit for years to come. The Blue Horizon lodge built by Westby decades ago is currently undergoing a comprehensive renovation/reconstruction, but during the interim there are several excellent lodging options. Most anglers stay at Thatch Caye, a large island with high-end accommodations and wonderful service that hosts lots of couples and honeymooners. Other options include family-style resorts in Placencia and Hopkins, plus an exclusive, luxurious private island in the center of the fishery. These options allow great flexibility depending on budget and non-angling companions. But regardless of where they choose to stay during their trip, all anglers experience the same gorgeous flats, highly skilled guides, and incredible opportunities at permit on the fly.
NOTE: Called the “dry fly fishing of the permit world” due to the insane number of tailing permit. Stunningly beautiful flats and Lincoln Westby is one of the most iconic permit guides alive today. SEASONALITY: Year-round

C
opal Tree Lodge may be the best value in fly fishing travel today -- especially for those interested in targeting permit on the fly. The Punta Gorda permit fishery is as good as anywhere on earth, and Copal Tree is one of the finest lodges in Central America. In fact, “lodge” is a huge understatement -- Copal Tree is an eco and health conscious boutique resort, secluded by jungle on a 12,000 acre nature preserve and farm-to-table operation. Around 70% of the award-winning cuisine served at Copal Tree is produced on the property. A ton of thought and care go into the exceptional cuisine, amenities, and activities at Copal Tree Lodge. Angling guests at Copal Tree fish with the Garbutt family, who are legendary guides in permit fishing circles. They are true watermen who know the area and fish better than anyone, are tons of fun to fish with, and they flat know how to put permit in the boat. The fishery itself has both a huge lagoon system and also hundreds of cayes and pancake flats offshore. These two very different habitats likely account for the fishery’s amazing consistency; if there are not many fish on the outer flats, there are usually lots of fish in the lagoon, and vice versa. The main lodge perches on a hill overlooking the jungle, Rio Grande River, and Caribbean Sea. Suites each have a private veranda, canopy bed, spa-style bath and walk-in shower, locally made soap, bathrobes, and floor-to-ceiling views outside. They are spacious, air-conditioned, equipped with wifi, and come with complimentary laundry service. The lodge has a full service spa and a ton of non-angling activities both on site and around the area. But even though it offers far more amenities than most fishing lodges, Copal Tree Lodge is surprisingly affordable. We love everything about Copal Tree, the people, and of course the fish.
NOTE: Incredibly prolific, consistent permit fishery and easily the nicest fishing lodge at a permit-centric destination. Wonderfully laid-back vibe and unbeatable value. SEASONALITY: Open year-round

atagonia River Guides, or “PRG”, is American owned and operated by Rance Rathie and Travis Smith. Rance and Travis are born and bred fly fishermen who have been guiding anglers in Montana since their teens. Their passion for fishing and guiding ultimately led them to Argentina where they saw a unique opportunity to apply their extensive knowledge and expertise to build the most comprehensive and professional fly fishing operation in Patagonia. Whether its their modern and well maintained trucks, boats, and fly fishing tackle, their allstar staff of guides and staff, amazing fishing, distinct scenery, ridiculously good cuisine and wines, or their “fish a different river everyday” philosophy – there is no question PRG offers the most complete and dynamic cultural and angling experience in Patagonia for hard-core anglers as well as adventurous couples. In addition to their world-class fly fishing programs, PRG also offers some of the finest wild quail and red stag hunting in South America allowing guests the unique opportunity to combine fly fishing and hunting from the same lodge. PRG operates in three separate and distinct regions: the Esquel and Los Alerces National Park Area (Trevelin); The Rio Pico Area (Tres Valles Lodge); and the San Martin and Junin del los Andes Area (PRG North). ver the last fifteen seasons, the Tailwaters Travel staff has collectively spent dozens of weeks on Alphonse Island and facilitated hundreds trips there. We are real experts on all aspects of this destination, and are here to tell you that there is simply no better shallow saltwater fly-fishing experience to be found. Conjure up an image of the most idyllic sight-fishing venue imaginable, and then set your expectation level a notch higher… Welcome to Alphonse Island! Anglers fish a very well defined fishery known as the St. Francois Lagoon; a 4 X 7 mile conglomerate over 10,000 acres of pristine flats and channels completely surrounded and protected by barrier reef. Alphonse and St. Francois can easily boast of the best bonefish fishing on the planet. In addition to the bonefish, Alphonse and St. Francois are also recognized as a top giant trevally fishery. 90% of the world’s fly caught milkfish are landed here, and around every corner there are shots at dozens of other species including hard fighting triggerfish, permit, parrotfish and much, much more – including a legitimate bluewater program for sailfish, tuna, and other pelagics. The accommodations and facilities at the Alphonse Island Resort are completely over the top. Fantastic cuisine, a gorgeous beachside restaurant and bar, freshwater pool and luxurious, single occupancy chalet buildings are as nice as you will find at any fishing lodge – and more than suitable for slow paced non angling companions.
NOTE: Species diversity that does not compare. The greatest all around saltwater flats fishing imaginable. What more is there to say? SEASONALITY: Open October - May. There is no “best time to go”

osmoledo Atoll, a raised coral atoll, is one of the most remote fishing destinations in the world, situated 560 nautical miles SW of Mahe Island. In past years, Cosmoledo has become known as the best GT fishery in the world and has become the benchmark for anglers searching for the ultimate saltwater flats destination full of hungry GTs. The sheer numbers and variety of fish species has amazed the fly fishing world, with anglers from across the globe lining up to sample the ultimate fishing playground. Giant Trevally are not the only species that can found here in fantastic numbers. Bonefish, milkfish, the finicky indo-pacific permit and a host of triggerfish species all call Cosmoledo home. The Cosmoledo Group is comprised of a larger white sand lagoon surrounded by 18 islands, numerous pancake flats and two main channels.
Formerly only made possible by mothership liveaboards, this dreamlike fishery is made accessible to ten anglers each week at the brand new lodge on Wizard Island completed in December 2018. “Cosmo” books years out (especially with the good tides), so make sure to get in front of planning this incredible adventure.
NOTE: Recognized as the “GT capital of the world”, and of course all the other species are abundant as well. Bucket list trip #1. SEASONALITY: November - April
