During the winter months, snow settles silently like a fine dust upon the granite edges surrounding the Lake. Located in a glacial valley along the northern crest of the Sierra Nevada’s western slope, its sculpted mountain architecture appears with a startling suddenness along the shore of this pristine lake. The big peaks, the famed landmarks and towering trees stand frosted in a winter cloak that can only be described as enchanting. Whenever you visit–-you will be enthralled by both the beauty, and the incredible variety of activities that abound on water, in resorts and towns and on our mountains. Let the pages that follow tell part of our story–-and visit our website often to find your own personal happily ever after. The Amgen Tour of California, the largest cycling event in America, starts at Lake Tahoe in May of 2011. Tahoe has long been recognized as a cycling mecca—and what better venue for a world-class event than these majestic peaks. Cycling enthusiasts and spectators alike will be able to watch the pros push the envelope in this exciting Tour de France-style race with scenery of astounding beauty as the backdrop—and all at 6,300 feet of elevation! Lake Tahoe’s first-ever involvement in the race will see professional cyclists climbing up and down mountain passes and circumnavigating the Lake not once but twice, culminating with a grand finish at Northstar-at-Tahoe™ Resort. Stage 2 will showcase the stunning peaks of Squaw Valley in a photo-worthy start to the day.

west shore In 1909, Arthur Jost built a small pier and hotel at the water’s edge five miles south of Tahoe City in a sheltered section of lake under the shadow of Ellis Peak. He called his friendly resort “Homewood, and all the name implies.” Today, the location’s real charm rests along the 21 miles of its shoreline, with bike paths and beaches in the summer months and, in winter, Homewood Mountain Resort (one of Tahoe’s “secret” ski destinations). West Shore also boasts the newly refurbished 1960 Winter Olympic Cross Country ski trails at Sugar Pine Point State Park, complete with an Olympic display at the Carriage House. Nothing beats the thrills found at the historic sledding hill at Granlibakken Resort. Homewood Mountain Resort has always retained an air of adventure and has been a favorite lair for hardboiled skiers from near and far, who are attracted to the resort’s treeprotected runs, nostalgic atmosphere and views that encompass the dramatic panorama of Lake Tahoe shoreline. After an unforgettable day of skiing, feed your craving for a casual pizza with a pie from locals’ favorite West Side Pizza.

Summertime is magical on the West Shore. Bike paths along the Lake deliver one breathtaking view after another. For the more adventurous rider, the Tahoe Rim Trail can be accessed by Granlibakken Resort or the Truckee River, and from here can take mountain bikers to the spectacular Paige Meadows. Stunning beaches provide the perfect venue for picnics and relaxation. Spectacular scenery is only a part of the West Shore’s enchantment. From the stately Ehrmann Mansion at Sugar Pine Point in Tahoma, to the beaches of Meeks Bay, to Eagle Rock and the Emerald Bay trailheads, gateway to Desolation Wilderness, to the grandeur of D.L. Bliss State Park, the West Shore is an exciting elixir of recreation and relaxation. If you are looking for a glimpse of some of the classic wooden boats that Tahoe is famous for, visit the Tahoe Maritime Museum and explore the rich history of these spectacular yachts. And if you wish to become a part of this spectacular scenery, create your own adventures afloat with a kayak or paddleboard from West Shore Sports. For an appealing retreat at day’s end, the warming ambiances of the West Shore Café and Sunnyside Resort are both lively choices for those sunset quenchers or for diners just starting the evening.

tahoe city Washoe tribesmen named their campsite in the corner of Lake Tahoe “Daubey Odu”—roughly translated as “running over,” referring not to the Lake but to the riches of the area’s fish and game. However, Tahoe’s true wealth was not discovered until 1864 when local prospectors laid out a small town at the intersection of the Truckee River, Lake Tahoe’s only outlet, and the Lake, and named the town Tahoe City. Located just 15 miles from the I-80 corridor, Tahoe City’s miles of shoreline rest both north and west along Lake Tahoe. An array of year-round activities—including snow sports in winter, and hiking, camping, fishing and water sports in summer—make our small town a wonderful place to spend time with the family, enjoy world-class recreation or just relax and enjoy the view. Time has chiseled away some of the edges of its history, but Tahoe City continues to be a town with unstoppable charm. It is one of Tahoe’s most popular destinations because of its quaint downtown shopping and dining district with some of North Lake Tahoe’s most authentic local dining establishments. There’s Rosie’s for a fireside breakfast, as well as the Bridgetender, with its summertime riverside lodgepole tables, a local’s favorite burger stop. Fine dining options abound at restaurants like Jake’s on the Lake, Wolfdale’s Cuisine Unique, Christy Hill and River Grill.

GoTahoeNorth.com 11

In summer, Commons Beach, the heart of downtown, comes alive with kayakers, swimmers, sunbathers, evening movies and free concerts on the beach. The weekly farmers’ market is just the ticket for stocking up for a week of picnics and beach barbecues. Just a stone’s throw away is the historic “Fanny Bridge,” named after what you see of the tourists who often line the sidewalk on the Lake side to ogle the monster rainbow trout awaiting handouts. Under “Fanny Bridge”, where the Lake flows into the Truckee River, you can learn about Lake Tahoe history at the Gatekeeper’s Museum. The museum was once the cabin home of the first Watermaster charged with controlling water flow out of the Lake. Another historical building on the site is the original Watson Cabin, Tahoe City’s oldest building and a testament to simple pioneer living. In the winter, Tahoe City is a popular destination due to its proximity to the mountains. Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are just a 10-minute drive away. For that matter, any ski resort in North Lake Tahoe is a short and scenic drive away. Just a few steps from any of its fine lodging Tom Zikas

tahoe vista / carnelian bay Historically ports of call for the logging industry and Tahoe’s steamships, Carnelian Bay and Tahoe Vista occupy the northwest shore of Lake Tahoe. The wilderness, which the Paiute and Washoe tribesmen used as favorite summer camps, today serves as a hub for the communities that include beachfront accommodations, fine dining, and sandy and pebbled beaches. In the summer months, kayakers paddle the shoreline amongst families of Merganser ducks floating in front of secluded beaches. There is a plethora of beaches to choose from here, from the soft sand and shallow waters of Moon Dunes to dog-friendly Patton Beach. Every day, charter fishing boats and exquisite vintage wooden yachts travel in and out of Sierra Boat Company as well as the North Tahoe Marina, while exploring the Lake. Each year, Sierra Boat Company hosts the Concours d’Elegance—one of the largest classic wooden boat shows in the world. Outdoor attractions are our first act. But there are plenty of attractions indoors to complete the show. Spindleshanks’ dining room is a set designer’s vision of a bistro, intimate and pinepaneled, where conversation flows from table to table. Notable lakefront eateries, such as Gar Woods Grill and Pier and Captain Jon’s, bring the Lake and the mountains right into their dining rooms. Mourelatos Ice Cream Shop, across from the lakeshore resort with the same name, is a favorite afternoon stop for kids of all ages. Sancho’s serves up authentic Mexican cuisine, with a view of Lake Tahoe from every seat or stool. If the fresh air and solitude of the two communities are not enough to hold the modern world at bay, various motel accommodations have an even more pristine appeal. There are more lodging choices in Tahoe Vista than you can shake a kayak paddle at—from B&Bs where you can tickle your toes under the cozy covers, and charming lakefront cabins complete with cozy fireplaces, to high-end fractional ownership resorts and mom-and-pop motels. As its name suggests, Tahoe Vista lodging is nestled right against the lakeshore.

kings beach Legend has it that at the turn of the 20th century local businessman Joe King obtained logger Robert Sherman’s large lakefront parcel in an all-night poker game. Visiting Kings Beach, located only a mile from the Nevada border, however, is never a gamble. At first glance, Kings Beach may seem like a sleepy little town—but trust us—it contains enough shops and hidden treasures to surprise most “been there, done that” vacationers. Its epicenter of activity is the Kings Beach State Recreation Area, once the site of Joe King’s estate. Here, the winds blow their freshest against wide, unbroken scenery and secluded sand dunes. Sunshine streams down on fresh-faced beachcombers enjoying an array of water sports and activities. Visitors can enjoy everything from parasailing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding to volleyball, crafts shows and live music. Just down the road, the Old Brockway Golf Course touts itself as one of the region’s oldest and demands strong drives and a sound, short game. At night, visitors revel at memorable meals provided at a variety of restaurants such as Lanza’s (Italian), Caliente! (Mexican) and Hiro Sushi (Japanese), to mention a few. Kings Beach offers a plentiful variety of moderately priced accommodations, all with close proximity to all of North Tahoe’s ski resorts and snowmobiling outfitters. Kings Beach is the perfect home base for snow sports, sun sports and all kinds of outdoor recreation.

cr ystal bay Just above the glittering casinos in Crystal Bay, the Stateline Fire Lookout offers a vantage point unlike any other at Lake Tahoe. A short and scenic hike takes you to a point high above the Lake that is surrounded by dwarf oak and an old-growth pine forest. From this 7,077-foot-high crest, spectacular vistas of Crystal Bay, Brockway Springs and the entire Tahoe Basin unfold below you. Self-guided sign posts walk you through the history of the region, the stomping grounds of Mark Twain and many lumber barons in the 1800s. Today, this jewel is known more for dining, gaming and entertainment. The Cal-Neva Resort, The Crystal Bay Club and the Tahoe Biltmore Lodge and Casino each offer excellent dining, gaming, hotel rooms and a bustling music scene. The Crystal Bay’s Crown Room stage and Red Room Cabaret offer world-class rock, blues, jazz and comedy and, of course, dancing, every day of the week. The Cal-Neva, once owned by Frank Sinatra and frequented by the likes of the Rat Pack, the Kennedys and Marilyn Monroe, straddles the border of California and Nevada. It’s rumored to be where Marilyn spent her last weekend. Past owners and guests can claim it’s haunted by some of these famous celebs. For a bit of romance, the Soule Domain restaurant, adjacent to Chris Talbot

the soon-to-be-re-developed Tahoe Biltmore, offers fine dining in a historic log cabin built by Harry Riley at the same time as the original Cal Neva Lodge in 1927. The hearth, in the Indian Room, features stones quarried at Crystal Bay and exposed log beams from local mills.

nor thstar Little did George Schaeffer realize 140 years ago that the site of his logging camp would become home to some of North America’s best skiing and riding. Today, boarders and skiers rocket down mile-long runs from the backside of Northstar™ Resort’s Mt. Pluto or carve off-piste turns through stands of lodgepole from the top of Sawtooth Ridge. While the backside of Northstar™ Resort offers everything from ridgeline cruising to narrow bump trails and steep drops, the resort’s front side combines lightly forested glades and wide boulevard groomers that stretch to an expanding base area. Northstar™ Resort’s family programs are some of the best in North America, but it is the resort’s billion-dollar expansion that is creating the most buzz. The Village at Northstar™ offers visitors an appealing array of world-class accommodations, shops, restaurants and skating rink, all with ski-in, ski-out accessibility. Sheer luxury is discovered at the mid-mountain Ritz-Carlton hotel that features a world-class spa in addition to the uncompromising ambiance that is The Ritz-Carlton. Summer months, the destination revels with a full calendar of special events, music, roller skating and more. Guests can partake in activities such as hiking, mountain biking (Northstar™ is the premier bike park in Northern California), golfing, fly fishing and scenic lift rides, all in a dog and family-friendly environment.

truckee Named by its first pioneers after the residing Paiute chief Tru-ki-zo, and called “Truckee” by the emigrants he helped guide west, the historic railroad settlement prides itself on being all things to all people. It retains the feel of an authentic mountain town, yet has grown into a genuine and sophisticated community, chock-full of excellent dining, quality lodging and unique shopping. It maintains a legacy as one of the Wild West’s favorite watering holes. Truckee’s quaint downtown corridor swells with unabashed nightlife and rows of galleries, shops and restaurants. From Columbia to cabernet, Marmot to merlot, revelers feast on everything from sushi and steaks to pasta and pizza at signature restaurants such as Moody’s Bistro, Pianeta, Pacific Crest, Dragonfly and Cottonwood at Hilltop. For a dose of local color, you can visit a variety of funky bars or trendy lounges, all within walking distance of each other in the downtown area. Set against a bold blue sky and rugged Sierra Nevada, and centrally located within minutes of eight world-class ski resorts and Lake Tahoe, the town is an adventure base camp. squaw valley No other ski area in the west embodies old-world alpine spirit like Squaw Valley USA. Site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, Squaw Valley’s allure has always been its inspiring peaks and unmatched terrain. Carved from six peaks spread over the 4,000 acres and served by 33 lifts, the resort is the very definition of down-to-earth carving. Yet for all the eye-popping pitches, the mountain is very friendly to all, cradling the novice and purring to families. Many runs are on gentle, soothing trails that offer a wide spectrum of delights. Another thrilling, outdoor activity, this one exclusive to Squaw Valley, is dog sledding in which 10 Alaskan Huskies speed you through 2.5 miles of awe-inspiring meadow. Off-slope, Squaw Valley’s base area offers climbing walls, shopping, Nordic touring, snowshoeing, and a host of world-class bars and restaurants in the European-style base Village. Just feet away from the lifts, guests can stay in family-friendly condominium suites in the Village at Squaw Valley and enjoy all that the mountain has to offer. Other luxurious lodging options include the 4-star Resort at Squaw Creek, Plumpjack Squaw Valley Inn and the Squaw Valley Lodge. At night, diners can enjoy some of Northern California’s finest cuisine at upscale eateries such as Twenty-Two Bistro, Graham’s, Plumpjack and Six Peaks at the Resort at Squaw Creek. Wildflowers abound throughout the valley in the late spring and summer months. Visitors hike up Shirley Canyon, or swim, ice skate and dine up at High Camp, elevation 8,200 feet. New summer activities at Squaw Valley include mountain biking, mountaintop paintball, disc golf and a zip line. In the valley’s meadow, golfers tee off amidst a stunning natural setting at the Resort at Squaw Creek’s Robert Trent Jones golf course.

alpine meadows Off-piste wilderness skiing, flawlessly groomed cruiser runs and wide open bowls of powder make Alpine Meadows a bastion of Sierra Nevada skiing and snowboarding. This resort’s high valley floor (6,835 feet) guarantees abundant snowfall. Even better than the snow is the terrain that covers 2,400 acres of glades, groomers and the resort’s famous steeps. Its multitude of fall-lines offers views of cobalt-colored Lake Tahoe from nearly every run. Best of all are Alpine’s “Adventure Zones,” which provide a backcountry-style experience within the ski-patrolled boundary. The Chalet—Alpine’s mountainside restaurant—is located in a nest of pine trees midway up the mountain. It’s a great place to rendezvous and sit on the deck enjoying sandwiches, quiche and homemade soups. For a decadent evening, reserve an Alpine Chalet Experience dinner party, four courses of gourmet cuisine, each dish paired with delicious wine; parties of up to 24 guests arrive at the Chalet via snow cat. The favorite après-ski hot spot at Alpine Meadows is the Last Chair Bar & Grill. Located in the lodge just steps from your real last chair, it features favorite drafts and microbrews, select wines and delicious appetizers like artisan cheese plates, sausage and sauerkraut platters, and gourmet flatbread pizzas. Live music in the Last Chair is a tried-and-true transition from ski boots to dancing shoes. Down the road, the bar in the historic River Ranch Lodge is a local gathering place with front row views of the Truckee River. A day of exploring Alpine’s legendary terrain is religiously followed by gathering at River Ranch.

incline village Incline Village occupies the most northern niche of Lake Tahoe. This Nevada town received its name from “the Great Incline of the Sierra Nevada,” a funicular, or railway, that was used to carry timber from Lake Tahoe over the mountain to the silver mines around Virginia City. Today, the Flume Trail uses the route of the historic flume, and is one of the most famous mountain bike rides in the world. The backside of the trail is home to Diamond Peak Ski Resort, a premier Lake Tahoe family resort, where visitors can take in the spectacular scenery and views of the Lake. Just a 10-minute drive over the mountain is Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe, a resort famous for its vistas of both the Lake to the west and the high desert valley to the east. Mt. Rose offers affordable lift tickets and packages to a variety of terrain, from family friendly groomers to super steep, tree-lined chutes. The Thunderbird Lodge is one of the most lavish and fascinating estates on the Lake. Learn about the escapades of the eccentric George Whittell, Jr., whose mansion and grounds boast some unusual amenities, such as an underground tunnel and an elephant house. For those who want to learn more about this spectacular lake, The Tahoe Environmental Research Center—a Sierra Nevada College, Desert Research Institute and University of California, Davis collaboration— provides a look into the ecology of Lake Tahoe, through exhibits and educational activities.

GoTahoeNorth.com 45

Just a short drive from Incline Village is Sand Harbor, where swimmers can explore polished rock formations, turquoise water and miles of soft sandy beach. Each summer Sand Harbor is host to the famous Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, and with Tahoe as a backdrop, the Bard never looked better. Incline Village boasts the Championship and Mountain Golf Courses, two exquisite worldrenowned layouts designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., that afford jaw-dropping Lake and mountain views. The town boasts a variety of shopping options, and you can take your pick from the unique shops, galleries and top-notch dining options tucked around this beautiful village. World-class restaurants, such as Fredrick’s and Le Bistro, are sure to tempt even the most discerning palates. After dinner, enjoy a walk along Lakeshore Boulevard and take a peek at its lavish homes. A favorite dinner and evening cocktail spot is the Lone Eagle Grille, the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe’s award-winning lakefront dining room. Imagine a blazing fire ring on the Hyatt’s beach, under a full moon that reflects in a mirror-like lake and you’ll know why the Lone Eagle Grille is a favorite local spot for romance. From luxurious accommodations to soothing spa treatments, the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino offers the ultimate in pampering— a great way to wind down your days.

OUR VIEWS WILL TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY; NOT THE ALTITUDE. Up-close views from a private resort beach. That’s just one of the attractions of our on-the-lake resort. It’s classic Tahoe, from lobby to guestrooms to Lakeside Cottages. With the refreshing Stillwater Spa; 24-hour casino, four restaurants (including the award-winning Lone Eagle Grille on the beach); year-round, heated lagoon-style pool; Camp Hyatt; the lake’s only floating pier bar... Just minutes from championship golf, lakeside skiing and more. It’s lakefront luxury for every season. Hyatt. You’re More Than Welcome.
