The Bosphorus Company of Pharmaceuticals Istanbul, Turkey

Seventh semester studio project in Istanbul Technical University with Assoc. Professor Ozan Onder Ozener. Designed in 2018-2019 Fall. Basically a theoretical botanics complex which utilizes city dwellers’ emotional reactions in the form of extracted hormones to feed the plants and make them reproduce mass amounts of ‘drugs’ to then distribute the pharmacies all over the nation. Also used as a city monument and a production center. A company that produces mass scale reaction as an end-product in a coastal neighborhood of Istanbul, just like The Pfizer Pharmaceutical Company in Ortaköy. It is a anti-monumental production facility, not only for the capitalist economy but for the people. It uses botany science and utopian-chemistry to collect hormones from all over The Istanbul Sewage System, separates it into hormones, assigns each hormone a different pigment (color), feeds it to the genetically mutant plants (this way the plants store the pigmented food and change color according to the mood and make them synthesise the raw material required) and produces medicine out of this materials. While all these are happening, the plants show the real emotions of the public in real life.

Istanbul, Turkey The Botanics Complex The botanics complex works as a city museum, a monument (actually an anti-monument). The way how the hormones are collected, and paired up with different coloured pigments is used to make the plants that are fed with the particular colored plant meal to change its colors, and thus after a series of photosynthesis and biological food/sugar storage, their leaves and the other body parts that store this colored/pigmented food change its colors. Simply; let’s say that 1 USD raises up to 20 TRY. (Hope not, though) So the public would feel very stressed, thus their bodies produce

Violet coloured plant meal is given to the plants, plants will do their jobs and store the violet pigmented sugars & foods & water in their cells. Causing their green color turn into Quinacridone color, which is violet. The people would know that most of the people feel the same things as themselves. The public would know that they were not alone. The monument (anti-monument) is their first reaction after a long period of obligated silence.

A project that was given the complete responsiblity of the design process in Archi-Tectonics, NYC, LLC. The house is considered one of the first garden city communities in North America. Participated processes include survey & measuring, conceptual design, design development and construction development as well as interior architecture and design decisions. House, located in Queens, is set to complete in 2021.

The Public Authority of Environmental Acts Istanbul, Turkey

In a not-so-distant future, with the unprecedented amount of pollution and migration in the mega-cities like Istanbul, New York or London; the economies are hurt as a rsult of a big exodus from the cities to the rural. The Public Authority, governed by the researchers and scientists and funded by the free market, is a thought experiment on how would it be if the capital geniunely had to leave the profit for the public - and the private well-being. Megacities are the epicenters of consumption culture thus making them the primary source of income for theindustry. Theeconomicoutputoftheworld’sbiggest29‘megalopolis’areasis300BillionUSDandmore, making them accountable of almost the half of the global economic output. The urban density is expected to get only higher, with an unprecedented percentage of population living in the metro areas - if not managed well, this domestic migration might end up in huge loss in the quality of life, problems in accessing

Designed by Grosvenor Atterbury & Frederick Law Olmsted, who also is the designer of Central Park; the Forest Hills Houses are a model for American suburan living. Each house was built from approximately 170 standardized precast concrete panels, fabricated off-site and set into position by crane. Panels were cast with integral hollow insulation chambers; casting formwork incorporated an internal sleeve, allowing molds to be “broken” before concrete had completely set. These panels were then carried over to the site and assembled in place. Sixth semester studio project in Istanbul Technical University with A

The history of Soviet suburban experiments date all the way back to 1920s and have all started with a great motivation to meet the housing need of every single person by creating cheap, green & self-sufficient multi-dwelling units. This methodology created the concept of Mikrorayons: Quality residential districts that has all the fundamental public services provided to keep itself sustainable. After the 1950s; with the changing governments, a declining economy and increasing demand for housing led to this successful methodology to be ignored in order to supply cheaper apartments for a shorter amount of time. This is the time the “Panel-Block Apartment Buildings” boomed - they were everywhere, rising up from the greeneries of mikrorayons with their cold, low-quality, out- of-scale bodies.

The Algorithm to Save The Suburbs Creating a set of positive urban applications and ideas that would increase the quality of life on a micro-scale (on the left side, pink-colored cards) and then the idea of fitting these ideas into small functional bits of software resultedin the final toolkit. As seen on the orange cards on the left, these tools have various rules, requirements, and connections among them. This mathematical approach, when applied on a map that has been fed with the data required, allowed a computer to analyze and process. The algorithm itself works in a very basic way. The Chertanovo Severnoye map and all the buildings data, whether if they are residential, commercial or any type of service building - they were given the algorithm one by one as an input. They had the information of how many people are living in the apartments (as an approximate), or how many people work in the offices around, or how many bus stops there are! With all the information; a small demo set of different masterplan outputs were taken for a very small specific test group: Commercial tenants, common halls, a social condenser, and offices. For each of these groups, the same process has been repeated for 10 times to be able to have a random averag overlapping all these different results and taking a geometric mean of the stains of the same type of buildings, a very understandable design proposal was obtained.

is going to be constructed in real life. As the 2ND year studio, the goal was to interact as much as we could with the surrounding parcel owners and build a sustainable residential project with a sub-function. During the studio, each lot was supposed to create a narrative, a scenario, a set of characters and their roles and as a result, come up with a list of requirements. Connecting two unreachable points between parcels 20 and 22, and letting them use the project building as a shortcut was the main idea of the project. As a characteristic, the building evolved around a socially important point of view and the most recognizable look became this staircase looking almost like an amphitheater. The building was owned by a Maker couple and they would’ve invite interested people to their houses for them to use their workshops anad tools: Some sort of a communal housing project, just like a maker campus. These people would live here for a short period of time, while the origial two owners temporarily reside in the building. This project is awarded with 2nd Place in Concrete Competition 2018 in Auburn Univertisy CADC. Auburn University and Football is a religion in Auburn, Alabama. People celebrate their victory with covering up the trees in downtown with toilet paper, which is a pretty iconic view that made it to the National TVs lots and lots of times. Although Toomer’s Corner is the busiest and the most shown-on-TV part of the town (or right after the Jordan-Hare Stadium, as the 2nd) most of the buildings around is decades old, especially The BBVA Compass Bank Building right on the corner. As a part of Auburn University CADC 3RD year architecture studio & The Concrete Competition, the project was to redesign the bank building by adding new 2 floors with office tennants, at least 1 commercial tennant with also keeping the existing bank function.

While a bank needs a space for their customers to wait for their lines or processes, Downtown could be the best place for a College Town to have a coffee shop - which could also support the bank customers who wanted to wait while drinking a nice iced Americano or checking their e-mails. These massing diagrams illustrate every process in the way of creating the final form of the new BBVA Compass Bank building. Since the most important idea of this project was to bring out the social condenser capabilities of this very specific location; the mass was meant to be inviting: Letting the people in, navigating them by drawing a new route towards the entrance. CREATING A REAL BRAND FOR A MORE REALISTIC SCENARIO To be able to have a more realistic universe for the architecture, a ‘legit’ brand was also considered to be designed: The half state owned Bosphorus Company of Pharmaceuticals is a utopian foundation which aims ‘the public welness of mind’ before any sort of profit.

A CONSISTENT UNIVERSE TO KEEP THE READER/AUDIENCE IN The project was designed to be more on the academic/theoretical side rather than being on the more ‘constructible’ one. To achieve this, it was aimed from the start to pull the observer in the universe by creating a set of design language, color palette and visual keys in order to keep a consistent flow.

The arrow imagery, the beige/red/green color palette (which was also inspired by ‘The Riverside State Park’ in New York City), the usage of halftoned imagery and axonometrics almost looking like hyperrealistic paintings were all a part of the architectural work. The Section Axonometric The axonometric section view shows a bunch of different spaces with detail. The A series are the Botanics Complex, where the collection of the waste water is collected, decantated and then pigmented. This pigments will be used to feed the plants in exchange to get mass produced hormones to produce generic drugs, while in this process the plants change color depending on what kind of pigmented hormone they are fed with. When colors of their leaves are changed, an audition of daily 2 million and more people will percieve what kind of mood they’re in today. If the Dollar is 20 TRY in one night, and the news are still OK with that; you know that the public is not “OK” with it since all of a sudden the plants changed their leaves from green to purple. Left, please find the volumetric axonometric perceptions of the campus from several different directions. Please refer to the SYSTEM AXONOMETRICS for further details.

ARCHITECTURE THAT IS CELEBRATING ITS OWN VISUAL CAPITAL: CREATING A CITY MONUMENT The botanics complex works as a city museum, a monument (actually an anti-monument). The way how the hormones are collected, and paired up with different coloured pigments is used to make the plants that are fed with the particular colored plant meal to change its colors, and thus - after a series of photosynthesis and biological food/sugar storage, their leaves and the other body parts that store this colored/pigmented food change its colors. Simply; let’s say that 1 USD raises up to 20 TRY. (Hope not, though) So the public would feel very stressed, thus their bodies produce huge amounts of Kortizol Hormone, which is the stress hormone. This hormone is refused out of the organism and sent to the sewage system. The factory uses the sewage system as a resource of hormone and water. The huge amounts of Cortizol is separated and stored in the hormone tanks. Since the amount of hormone is relatively so much more than the others in the particular event time, the tank will fill up faster - thus causing this particular hormone to be the dominant one to be used. Now, let’s say that this hormone is paired up with Quinacridone, which is an organic violet pigment. So the violet is now associated with stress, a.k.a. Cortizol. Violet coloured plant meal is given to the plants, plants will do their jobs and store the violet pigmented sugars & foods & water in their cells. Causing their green color turn into Quinacridone color, which is violet. The people would know that most of the people feel the same things as themselves. Above you see a fragment of the botanics complex, photo taken from the entrway called The Visitors’ Slope. Notice the plants in the botanics complex, which is completely in open air, currently have a natural look - because they have not been fed with any pigmented hormone food yet. This means, the complex is idle and not producing any drugs.

When Idle, the botanics complex looks like a normal garden made out of spirals.

Melatonin produced by the people is collected through sewage.

After a couple of days condensing the collected Melatonin it is fusioned with blue pigment.

After pigmentation, the hormone is given to plants as a plant food.

Plants keep the blue pigment in their storage organs (leaves) in the form of multiplied hormone molecules.

The pods are the smallest architectural detail of the project and also the main and the most mobile piece of the system. They keep the hydrophilic plants, sunflowers in a secure enclave.

The podgrids are empty metal grids in which the pods can be placed into. They keep many pods together so that a forklift or a carrier can move groups easier.

Three of the towers you see on the way of train approaching the communal building, the ones between the piers, are the dockland buildings. These towers are two-storey at height and what they do is an assembly task. The sunflowers are brought in from the second floor, while a certain amount of previously folded and compressed platform materials made out of waterproof coated durable recycled paper is stored and kept on the first floor only to assemble later in the assembly line of the same building and release in the water.

The main end-product of this research center. The epicenter and the masterpiece of what all these people are working around the clock for. These platforms are released from the institution’s docklands, as explained, to be released in the water & clean up the polluted environment and then dissolve in the water & possible got eaten by the fish, if there’s any left anyways.

While there’s a main cycle of work going on everyday behind the scenes, whether taking good care of the sunflowers or doing some research on some random hydrophiliac plant; there’s also a requirement in which every member, regardless of their status, must deposit a certain amount of repurposable waste every week. These silos, located conveniently in the middle of the common area, take, storage and condense organic waste, sludge or paper dough to reuse them as paper, ink or energy.

BRINGING PARTS TOGETHER Below the exploded axonometric representations of the communal space, the office area, the lecture hall & dining hall show a chaotic intervowen series of spaces that comes together in a cohesive and whole way. By stretching the commuter train that everyone takes inside of the main hall as a secondary entry gate, it aims to create a sense of democracy. The openness and being able to see every space from anywhere creates a sense of being watched, as well as being in security. Semi-closed spaces turn into docks and vertical circulation elements, and many used elements like mullions suddenly dissolve and turn into ballisters. On the right, please find a 3D view looking over the building from The Golden Horn.

The Cherrytree Machinery CAN COMPUTERS REALLY SAVE A NEIGHBORHOOD?

An experiment on saving broken Soviet suburbs using architecture and computer programming Welcome to the Soviet Suburbia, once promising a much brighter lifestyle to generations, the dream of Soviet suburbs are now nothing but endless fields of concrete blocks that are all derivatives of each other. Giving bubblegum colored names like “Cherry Tree Lane to the ragged suburban roads and not even bothering to plant one of the real ones is the problem itself at its kindest. As future folks, a new methodology is a must to create the new generation of suburbs that works not as a sleeping district but a quality, living organism. CREATING THE ALGORITHM Defining the problems and rationalizing them for a computer to understand was the first step.

You see the toolkit charts, one define the problems and one offer a solution in a mathematical way.

THE RISE AND FALL OF THE SOVIET SUBURBAN DREAM, AND MAYBE THE RISE AGAIN (?) The history of Soviet suburban experiments date all the way back to 1920s and have all started with a great motivation to meet the housing need of every single person by creating cheap, green & self-sufficient multi-dwelling units. This is the time the “Panel-Block Apartment Buildings boomed - they were everywhere, rising up from the greeneries of mikrorayons with their cold, low-quality, out- of-scale bodies. Thus today, a once successful mikrorayon of Moscow, Chertanovo Severnoye is one of the most dangerous places to live in the city just like its many other successors. Many share the same repeated patterns in where they failed: Absence of social condensers, enormous blocks that completely disregard the concept of scale, desolated neighborhoods at specific hours, lack of eyes on the streets and several more. The method for designing these failed attempts back to what they were imagined in the first place was clear: Defining re-appliable solutions that follow a particular pattern to solve the problems that have a repeating fashion. Just like pieces of software that function for similar purposes. So what you basically see on the right-hand side is the kits that make up the most important part of the solution. Based upon the concept kit, which is what you see in light-pink colored cards, some set of tools were created, which are the ones in orange/red color. When rationalized and put in a mathematical way that can be formulized, it can be taught (or at least written and can be read) to the machines/computers - which at first it may not seem so impressive, but when all of the 20+ rules work together they start to work like a very complex machine. Every tiny bit of asset has to work in the way that it supposed to do, thus creating a perfect utopia of urban-scaled machinery. (We call it a neighborhood here)

A still ongoing masterplan, designed according to the results that got out of the Cherrytree Algorithm. Objects colored in blue are the interventions, including modifications to the existing buildings, a completely new building that located on the map by the algorithm, or the placements and plans of the specific functional sructures needed on the program.

The Panel Aparments After Modification: Everyone gets their own garden, within now a two storey apartments, ALL in the same plan and squaremeters!

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? The modified areas are shown in blue color. Every apartment is divided in half in the 2D floor plan, with interior circulation added that connects them to the upper floors. So in every 2 floors, one corridor made people access the homes from the exterior facade in opposition to the Panel Apartment style (which the unused interior circulation is now used to connect the storeys of single apartments) and the other is used as a garden/greenery/terrace.

BBVA Compass Bank in Auburn, Alabama A REDESIGN THAT AIMS TO MAKE PEOPLE SAY ‘MEET ME AT THE BANK’

Designing a new bank building to replace the old one in the most crowded & historical point in Downtown Auburn, Toomer’s Corner now gets another social condenser. Inspired by the European urban culture, where everything is condensed and interbedded into each other, the project merges these commercial and bank activities on the ground floor, where the foot traffic is the most. While a bank needs a space for their customers to wait for their lines or processes, Downtown could be the best place for a College Town to have a coffee shop - which could also support the bank customers who wanted to wait while drinking a nice iced Americano or checking their e-mails. This project is located in Downtown Auburn, a college town in Alabama.

CREATING A MASS THAT WOULD INVITE THE PEOPLE IN These massing diagrams illustrate every process in the way of creating the final form of the new BBVA Compass Bank building. Since the most important idea of this project was to bring out the social condenser capabilities of this very specific location; the mass was meant to be inviting: Letting the people in, navigating them by drawing a new route towards the entrance. Making them wonder what is inside. As an outcome, these pushed out curvy forms became the main entrance points. The voids became the social areas, where people can hang out or be in the private and talk to their colleagues. This is how its made.

The building is a 3½ story height townhouse. The exterior walls are stone & brick, and the interiors are gypsum board in varying thicknesses. It also features a garage, front & backyards, two entrances and a basement floor.

The main staircase, as highlighted in blue, was a standard, closed staircase that was all enclaved by the floor plates.

Opening the light source down to the first floor, we removed the dark blu highlighted parts in order to give way to light.

In order to understand the main circulation better, we cut open the building to see the relations between floors.

We also had a grand skylight in the attic which nobody used. We created a double height space on the front by removing the floor plate between 3rd Floor and the Attic, as well as we cut through the staircase.

At the end, by a very simple touch, we had this grand staircase that was full of light!

The Parcel 21

A COMMUNAL HOUSING & WORKSHOP Design with a purpose Parcel 21 project is located in one of the northeasternmost boroughs of Istanbul, Şile and the name Parcel 21 comes from the 30 different parcels the other project members got from a large empty area that is planned to be an off-the-scale mass housing project is going to be constructed in real life. This project is located in Şile, a north-eastern borough of Istanbul.
