A typical school-based apprentice Tom wanted to be an electrician so he asked his careers advisor if he could leave school to start an apprenticeship. His careers advisor talked through the option of being a school-based apprentice and from there Tom decided he wanted to get his HSC and start the electrical trade combining both certificates. In year 10 Tom started working towards his goal by finding an employer, so that by year 11 he could enrol in TAFE to start his stage 1 training in an apprenticeship class. Tom’s careers advisor helped by working out his study program between school, TAFE and work. Year 11 was a great learning experience for Tom, he really enjoyed his trade class and earning money at the same time. In year 12 Tom continued his work days and returned to school four days a week to concentrate on his HSC studies. At the end of his HSC Tom progressed into stage 2 of the trade course.
