URBAN DARNING Squamish, Canada

COURSE: Graduate Design Project (2013) This project explored public realm design as a tool for improving pedestrian connectivity and turning forgotten spaces and edges into places that are welcoming and inviting. The design proposes a new park and community hall to help soften the unsightly railway edge that separates downtown Squamish from surrounding neighbourhoods. The park acts as both a pleasant transition space and town gateway.

DISTILLERY TOWNSCAPE Toronto, Ontario, Canada

PERSONAL: Exploring Cullen’s Townscape Theory (2009) These sequential drawings illustrate the urban, architectural and natural form of the newly revitalised Distillery District in Toronto. Drawing inspiration from Gordon Cullen’s ‘The Concise Townscape’ (1961), they show the typical route for a pedestrian entering the development with an emphasis on massing, scale and landscape.

Amsterdam Noord, The Netherlands COURSE: UBC Studio Abroad (Amsterdam Noord, 2012) DESIGN TEAM: T. White, A. Skibiki, & A. Duran This project considered the future residential development of the former Shell Research Lab site on the North side of the IJ River in Amsterdam. It explored how to connect the largely inaccessible site to surrounding communities through programming, public realm design and physical connection.

LIQUID LANESCAPES

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada DESIGN TEAM: T. White & G. Canete This project received an honourable mention in the AECOM Urabn SOS International Student Design Competition. It proposed a series of development typologies to reduce the pressure on Vancouver’s combined sewer system. The concept focused on a Laneway Housing policy actively encouraged by the municipality to intensify single family residential neighbourhoods. We found that by combining green

infrastructure and water harvesting systems with infill development it would be possible to capture and divert over 80% of the rainfall that falls on the average single family lot in Vancouver. SCHOOL CAMPUS & LIBRARY Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

COURSE: Arch. & L. Arch. Vertical Studio (2011) BUILDING DESIGN TEAM: T. White & E. Leclerc This project saw Landscape Architecture and Architecture students work together to develop a university campus masterplan and develop individual building designs for an NGO working in Burkina Faso. The design of the library building sought to create a space that could meet the changing needs of a modern university while at the same time be a welcoming and open place for the whole community.

SNUG COVE INFILL

Bowen Island, British Columbia, Canada COURSE: Design Development Studio (2012) As part of the Design Development Studio at UBC this project sought to bring a project from an initial vision through to construction detailing. Located in a small island suburb of Vancouver the proposal outlines a residential infill development that

complements the island’s community character. The proposal focused around a communal green space that took advantage of the site’s steep topography to create a variety of play experiences.

VANCOUVER ART GALLERY Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada COURSE: UBC Park & Garden Studio (2011) This redesign for the plaza on the North side of the Vancouver Art Gallery generated a simple and elegant space that could meet the need for a celebratory city square. At the same time it needed to be able to handle and direct large numbers of

people. A series of moveable seats attached to rails add much needed seating and colour to the space and give it a playful tone. They can also be easily moved when large events take place.

Wannamaker-Vilches Garden Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Client: Wannamaker-Vilches Household The conceptual planning and redesign of the front and back gardens of the WannamakerVilches house incorporates entertaining spaces and a redesign of the main approach to the house. The design takes advantage of different micro-climatic zones in the garden and incorporates garden storage space.
